I like your attitude about life. Just because someone says you can't do something there must be a good reason! If there is no good reason then it can be done! Great life lesson which can be applied to any situation! Nothing is ever impossible if you want to do it bad enough!
I'm currently doing my Recreational Pilot Certificate training at Tooradin. It's a great little airfield and not too busy. I can't understand why anyone would say not to land there. Thanks for an entertaining video.
Hello from Canada! Your talk of Tooradin Airport/Airfield reminds me of one of the airports near my area. Brampton-Caledon Airport (CNC3) is considered to be the busiest uncontrolled airspace in Canada. It's owned and operated by a local flying club, and they also run a fantastic flight school there. Appreciated your talk about Tooradin. Pity the coffee shop was closed, though.
Maybe it wasn’t negativity, maybe that Pilot was just looking out for you to save you a lot of headache but, I know what you mean about not letting other people’s perceived barriers stop you. Good on you for taking on the challenge & smashing it!
Hay Stefan, I just saw this vlog, I Did my RPC at Tooradin airfield, then I did all my navs in the Blackshape. The runway has been redone, The new owners of the Restaurant are awesome, Next time you want to come down, I'll get you a free coffee, & maybe take you for a lap or 2 in my little plane I bought today. Like your videos. Keep them coming, I'll catch up one day.
I really love the timing and pace of your videos. Especially in this one i like the detail shots and cuts to the beat. Thank you for your great work. Greets from Germany.
Hi Stefan been watching your back catalogue at home. I find your content inspirational and funny. I went on an intro flight last week. I cannot wait to have my my first lesson. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Hey davesjourney, thanks for checking out the channel and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. That's awesome to hear you've been on an intro flight, I bet you're excited for your first lesson for sure. Once you taste aviation, it's a hard thing to ignore! Best of luck with your training and thanks for leaving that comment. All the best, stef 👍
I used to avoid Tooradin because I was scared of carving up a parachutist, and the fact you couldn't 'overfly' in a traditional way (due to chute ops) to check the sock. However, I have been there a few times now and enjoy it.
I like what you say Stef. I want to be able emulate your attitude. There are so many things I want to do, but get told no. Nothing terrible, mind you, just where and how I want to live my short life on this beautiful planet. Cheers mate.
You and Casey are SO ALIKE! Casey - "Failure sucks, but the pain that is the failure to try is worse" (or something like that). Stef - "Do not let another person's negative attitude stop you from doing the things that you want to do." Both truly inspirational. I have been flying the SR22 in Infinite Flight for a while now and absolutely love the performance. Would love to give it a try in real life one day. PS: Can you please come down to Tyabb (YTYA), sometime soon, I would love to meet you in person!
Great vdo! They used to have the bumpiest runway and I guess they still do lol. What makes YTDN so challenging (at least for student pilots) is that it gives you little space to decent since it is situated by the coast and you have to maintain gliding distance (technically and legally) while avoid overflying the township and nearby area as per ERSA said. One minor thing I picked up tho, perhaps Squawk VFR outside Class D airspace?
Hey Bear Kel, yeah I was on 3000 outside of MB which is incorrect. I've been flying a lot of IFR recently where you only make squawk code changes when explicitly told to do so. That, combined with being super focussed on traffic I think meant I didn't change to 1200 when I should have. I picked it up on the return flight.
Great video Stef! My 'don't go there' moment was from my primary instructor in YBLT: the Melbourne Coastal Route. "You'd have to have eyes in the back of your head", he'd say. Now, operating from YMMB, I can't go anywhere West without using at least part of the route!
Sounds like your Instructor needs lessons himself , aviate , navigate , communicate. the Melbourne Coastal Route and Melbourne Inland route are excellent flight paths for learning. He wants the auto pilot to do everything and not challenge himself.
Would almost say don't go to Moorabbin as well if it wasn't basically the GA hub of Victoria and I daresay a fair bit of the country because the controllers are often just bad tempered. For an airport with so many student pilots (like myself) they really don't show much mercy or professionalism even. Listening to the tower frequency one day and hearing one of them tell a newbie pilot in a Cirrus owned by the school I was at to "just pick one and get off" in a rather frustrated tone when they took a tad longer to vacate was just poor in my eyes. The guys at tulla and just about every other airport I have listened to the ATCs of are way better. Got to visit the tower whilst on work experience and the people just looked angry and exasperated the whole time I was there. Vast difference to the light-hearted and funny controllers of any other far busier airports I have listened to

Nice video. Thanks for sharing. What is the mount you have for the top camera? I have been looking for something to mount on my SR22 to give me that angle. Thanks in advance

I wonder if you can land 32/16 in a Cirrus? :) That's really challenging as you have to be very precise and very fast on touch and go as the runway is very short and there are trees at the end of it :)
Awesome flight Stef, what a bugger that coffee shop wasn't open. Mate, negative people I try and identify them and steer clear of them. Thanks for that. Cheers.
Stefan Drury Thanks Stef! Yeah it is I’m about to get a CTA endorsement on my RPL, I’ve never spoken to ATC before but I’m really excited for it! Keep making awesome vids!
Trained both at Tooradin and Moorabbin and really prefer flying at Tooradin, awesome airport, lots of fun, beautiful views around, no queues! But yes, while doing circuits many times I've seen planes coming from Moorabbin, trying to do an approach for touch and go, going around and just flying back to Moorabbin. That was always surprising me as I see no real difficulties flying there, probably because I was training there from a start of my training. Then I moved to Moorabbin and then back to Tooradin, where I got my RPL.

Thanks for the video, this is the first video of yours that I have seen. I love the camera mounted behind the caps handle. Do you know where I can get one of those mounts for my Cirrus SR-22?
Thank you. No I’m just flying for fun. I have a Commercial Pilots License but no plans to fly for a career. I prefer deciding where and when to fly myself 🙂 Thanks for watching, stef 👍
Awww Stef wish I knew you were heading down, I live close by. I would have told you about the coffee shop mid week, weekends are so much better, great on a nice day, specially when Wings n Fins let you have your lunch on the decking. Don't wipe Tooradin out completely, next time my shout 👍
Lots of airports around Sydney you get told by instructors to never go to, Katoomba, Jaspers Brush, and The Oaks, i hired a Cherokee from a Bankstown school, flew it to The Oaks, spend another hour flying a Jabiru and RAAus aircraft, then took the Cherokee back to Bankstown, the CFI found out, and banned me from hiring their aircraft again, and to never land them on grass. so its no surprise, that school no longer exists.. and Katoomba is a great strip to fly in to, permission of course. Couldnt quite get what the youtube video comment was about? not something negative i hope, some people are weird like that. oh, and Fantastic cinematic video one again. love it!
Back in the day, I used to hire planes from The Royal AeroClub of NSW (it was located opposite where Axis Aviation is/was). Same nonsense I was told by the CFI. Needless to say, they went bankrupt. I pursued aviation all the way and am currently in the airlines now, but I miss GA flying, or what the GA flying days were, whereby you could hire a plane and go flying. Nowadays it seems people are uptight about security checks and landing fees.
Chris V Private pilot here from the Sydney area: Literally nobody pays any attention to security checks, except to the extent necessary to complain about the fact that we need to carry ASICs for no good reason. If you’re in the airlines, you already have one of those. Regarding landing fees: If you’d renting an airplane and $10 makes the difference between whether or not you think it’s affordable, maybe join a cricket team instead. :) I fly every weekend, landing fees are the cheapest part of aviation.
+Mark Newton I work for an Asian airline. We don't use ASICs; only our ICAO crewmember card as our form of ID around the world. Whenever I operate into SYD or MEL, this is what Customs Border Patrol sees along with our passports. Whenever I do a walkaround ex Aus, this is what I need to show the camera in order to gain access out on the ramp, along with my ear plugs (OH&S treating us like kids) and that fashionable fluro vest. Landing fees. When I was learning to fly, I remember being charged an exuberant amount for the touch and gos during circuit practice. $10 per engine - it adds pretty quick when you're doing circuits in a twin. Back in my day, renting a PA-28 wet rate was $35/hr solo and $55/hr with an instructor. Yep - think I'll join a cricket team :)
Chris V Uh. I’m not sure I’ve ever encountered an airport that charges the fee more than one per *session* of circuits. If you were being billed for every circuit, it sounds like you were doing circuit training at the wrong place (only about 15% of airports charge anything at all according to AOPA Australia) The rules and bureaucracy are stifling, I agree. Australians like to think we’re anti authoritarian ocker larrikins free to do whatever we want and have a laugh while we’re doing it. But that’s a pretty insidious lie, our culture is every bit as rulebound as the Germans, coupled with the punishment lust of the Singaporeans. Still, if you’re a private aircraft owner you get to ignore most of it, in pretty much the way that Stefan showed in this video, so there’s that, I guess.
Yes i also don't like people telling me you can't do it, so when they do ill do it anyway as long as its legal of course. You look like you are doing great with the 22. Don't worry about the coffee, ill be glad to have a cuppa with you next time you are up this way. Thanks Stef.
May I kindly ask who is the instructor? 1. Busy: Yes maybe sometimes but I have never seen more than 4 in the circuit 2. PPR: Non-Existent 3. Really hard: Our school sends students on their circuit solos down there, I did all my solos down there. Surprised to hear those comments about YTDN from an instructor! Good video as always!
Hey Howard, no I'm not going to name names. It's the principle of questioning negativity that I want to get across, doesn't really matter who said it, but moving past it and making your own decisions is the important part. And re PPR, point 1 in ERSA mentioned 'Restricted OPS, PPR required' so I was just following that. Cheers, stef
Feel the same way you do..Just do it I say..I have some Scot in me and some Brit ,too and I am An American!! so I'm always challanging myself..go for it!! gr8 video Stefan!!
Man you've got both sides going too-- I say " Im like a dog grabbing on to a leg" if you tell me I cant!! you can call me JR BTW Stefan Thanks for the Reply Mate--straight from Philly pa USA
Thanks! I use a few resources for weather. Long range I use the BOM synoptic charts and Weatherzone, to get the 'big picture'. Night before I'm on NAIPS using the YMML weather (it has a 36 hour validity) and on the day I always use the BOM aviation forecasts (via NAIPS) for area and aerodrome weather. I use a few others to support that, like Windy which is awesome for visualising weather patterns when planning.
This is why many are defeated; they listen to poor, unfounded, meritless advice. When I hear "no", I learn and go! Flying to Oshkosh was one example. I flew the FISK arrival... twice... and it was a wing-rockin' blast!
Not sure why you were not told to fly to Tooradin, during my training we always did circuits and emergencies at Tooradin, was less busy than Moorabbin. Runway is pretty poor and that tree on approach to Rwy 22 should be removed ;) But aside from that a fun little airport
Yes I think I put the nosewheel straight into a hole when I touched down, but the Cirrus is pretty forgiving in that respect! I enjoyed visiting, I'm sure I'll be back for a coffee sometime soon.
Just found your channel today, I like the vibe, and I would also ask, do you know of Mr Aviation 101? It would be a great thing to see you two visit each others countries and do a video.. Nice Video sir...
You have probably clocked a lot of hours and seen a lot of crowded airspace since your instructor said , "give that one a miss. Its not worth it" And to be fair, you could not even get your coffee. So? Love your videos though. Especially the outback airfields.
That’s hilarious, we have a nearby airfield my instructor told me to never visit because, “it’s non-towered and all the pilots are reckless”... needless to say I’ve since visited and it was really nice
non-towered is how we roll 99% of the time in the midwest. I would say outside of 6-8am and 5-7pm most patterns are empty and Unicom is dead silent at the vast majortiy of non towered airports.
Chris Hull well to my instructor it was the combo of no tower AND “crazy pilots”... and in Florida you can have some interesting folks flying around. But that’s interesting you have so many non-towered fields. Even going to our non-towers I still am talking to ATC because I feel like half our state is a giant class bravo haha
This is a bit of a late reply lol but crosswind is on the first turn after takeoff, downwind is parrel to the runway and u are going to the oppsoite direction and base is crossswind but on the other side and final is when u are turned twoards the runway
Let’s try this: when you take off, you’re facing in to the wind which is also called ‘upwind’. To do a circuit you turn 90 degrees left or right depending on the traffic pattern and now you have the wind hitting the side of your plane and thus, crosswind. Next you turn 90 degrees again and you are parallel to the runway you took off from but going in the opposite direction. The wind is now coming from behind this you are downwind. If you’re going to land, you’re starting to descend from the circuit altitude and continue as you make another 90 degree turn. This puts you again at right angles to the wind or, crosswind but it’s now hitting the other side of the plane. This is called the base leg of the circuit. Another 90 degree turn brings you in line with the runway and now all you have to do is land. Or if you’re flying a cirrus, wait until you’re over the runway, reach up and pull that handle....
As for when you say them, if you arrive in the circuit and are joining the traffic pattern from the crosswind position you would call ‘joining crosswind for runway xx’ and the same goes for joining from the downwind direction. Next you would call ‘turning base for runway xx ‘ and usually announce if you’re full stop or touch and go. If it’s really busy you might also announce ‘turning final’. Sometimes you might also join the circuit lined up with the runway. In that case you would normally announce your distance at 10 miles, maybe 7 miles if there’s a lot of traffic, then call a five mile final, 2 mile final and at 1 mile announce ‘short final’.
I like the detailed traffic warnings. How about a quick flight to YLIL? Seems like a cute little airfield. I envy the freedom you must experience. I was flying the A2A Comanche in Prepar3d v4. Although a sim, lovely feeling trimming the aircraft and holding a glideslipe at 90kts and -500ft minute. Really enjoyed the video and understand the motivation.
Thanks Michael, yes a few people have mentioned stopping in at Lilydale. I'll definitely do that soon, if only to pop into the Yarra Valley and pick up some wine for Jacqui!
Stefan Drury Excellent plan. I recommend Oakridge winery. Great wines and stunning restaurant. Although, if you're flying, it might be a form of torture to have lunch at a winery when you can't drink - bottle/throttle!
I actually wouldn't be surprised. Some of his landings are abysmal! I made a safety report to CASA after watching one of his videos asking to have his licence revoked!
That's the way, report a very professional pilot because you think you are an expert watching UA-cam videos. How often dooes your Mother let you use the internets?
hey tooradin isnt that bad haha. can get pretty busy. The whole reason i waiting until I was 28 to get my license is my whole life i was told i wouldnt amount to anything, and wasnt smart enough to be a pilot. but i did exactly like you said, i weighed up the reasons why and in my opinion they were just utter BS! so i went and did it anyway. PS was great to finally fly at the same time as you and finally hear you on the radio ;)
Thanks for sharing that. Yes it's really hard when someone tells you that you can't do something, it's so easy to just discount it at that time and miss the opportunity to achieve something potentially awesome. Great to hear you broke through that and went on to become a pilot though, good for you mate! Which aircraft were you in yesterday, were you at MB?
I was in YVX. I messaged you yesterday on FB. bright yellow bristell in the southern run up bay as you taxid on Alpha. you'd probably see heaps of yellow bristells at moorabbin especially with how busy it was! if i see ya on the apron i'll be sure to come and say gday
Ah gotcha, just linked the two usernames in my head. Yeah lots of yellow Bristells and Foxbats, but at least they're easy to spot. Yeah if you see me around for sure come say hello.
I was out there in TAJ. Traffic jam? Seems like everyone and their pet Foxbat was flying yesterday! I got caught out by a white Bristell in the murk that was very difficult to spot from behind - so they aren't all yellow... and he was going slow enough that by the time I saw him on final I had to go around Watch out!
I think you got confused between “can’t” and “shouldn’t”, but otherwise another great video. Although you didn’t do your research on the coffee shop hours... 😂😂😂
It's strange to hear you say that an instructor told you not to go there. The instructors at YLIL encourage us to go there for crosswind circuits practice.
NEVER land at this airport....because the coffee shop is closed.
Lol
The runway seems to need a bit of work too. But yeah, that title is a bit harsh. 😆
No joke - this is a serious issue.
Stef your VLOG's are growing both visually and audibly. The passion for flight is what it is all about.
Always ask why, even if you know the answer, it’s amazing how good people open up and share and what you may learn.
I'm going to say it again, you're waisting the wings, you need to use the chute on final, it's way better
True lol
Using the chute is extremely expensive
Ji

I'm currently doing my Recreational Pilot Certificate training at Tooradin. It's a great little airfield and not too busy. I can't understand why anyone would say not to land there. Thanks for an entertaining video.
Because of prohibited overfly maybe ? You have to fly so far away then you can turn to your direction
LOVE your videos mate! keep it up!
Thanks Jordan, I appreciate the support ✈️👍

Never going back there again.

Haha the aircraft taking off in 9:19 is the one I'm training in at Coldstream in the Yarra Valley, VH-ITE!
No way, small world! Hope the training is going well.
Stefan Drury Thanks Stef! Yeah it is I’m about to get a CTA endorsement on my RPL, I’ve never spoken to ATC before but I’m really excited for it! Keep making awesome vids!
Love your vids man! I'm thinking of starting my training soon too!
Amen! Preach it brother!
So true! Thanks, Stefan!
Dumb question - but how do you manage to record your voice with that kind of clarity in the cockpit? ..

I’ll be back for sure, just maybe around lunchtime next time :)
Good video ! First of a kind I've ever watched ! If I had 100 grand extra I'd get myself some little twin engine plane 🛩✈️🚁
So is the VFR squak in Australia 3000? US is 1200
No VFR is 1200 here as well. It was my error not switching over to 1200 after leaving the Class D zone where I was squawking 3000.
If you were being billed for every circuit, it sounds like you were doing circuit training at the wrong place (only about 15% of airports charge anything at all according to AOPA Australia)
The rules and bureaucracy are stifling, I agree.
Mark Newton m
Hi Stefan, nice vlogs. Is there a reason we can.t hear the ATC replying your request or was the airfield uncontrolled🙂
Thanks Hans, yep it’s an uncontrolled airfield so I was just broadcasting on the CTAF.
STEF, I WAS A TAD DISAPPOINTED, the Atc didn't answer you on your final, whats that all about??? Regards Jay, AKL
Yes i also don't like people telling me you can't do it, so when they do ill do it anyway as long as its legal of course. You look like you are doing great with the 22. Don't worry about the coffee, ill be glad to have a cuppa with you next time you are up this way. Thanks Stef.
Ha thanks Spiro, I've had two this morning to make up for it ☕☕
May I kindly ask who is the instructor?
1. Busy: Yes maybe sometimes but I have never seen more than 4 in the circuit
2. PPR: Non-Existent
That was a nice video, well done and thanks for sharing..
Hey Ashely, thanks for watching 👍
Feel the same way you do..Just do it I say..I have some Scot in me and some Brit ,too and I am An American!! so I'm always challanging myself..go for it!! gr8 video Stefan!!
Thanks John, stubborn Brits unite! (Also have Scottish in my father’s side too).
Man you've got both sides going too-- I say " Im like a dog grabbing on to a leg" if you tell me I cant!! you can call me JR BTW Stefan Thanks for the Reply Mate--straight from Philly pa USA
Another amazing video Stefan!! Just a quick question, what website/app do you get your weather info off? Thanks;)
Awesome thank you so much!
Thank you, this was very inspirational!
8:01 how often do you get these now??
what about Tyabb - worth a trip?
Definitely - I did some of my Cirrus training at Tyabb, a few circuits and some ground work.
That is good to have a fun day. It is always great to get a coffee where you can't go.
This is why many are defeated; they listen to poor, unfounded, meritless advice.
When I hear "no", I learn and go! Flying to Oshkosh was one example. I flew the FISK arrival... twice... and it was a wing-rockin' blast!
Thanks for sharing that Windtee that’s awesome. I’ve always wanted to fly in to Osh, what a great experience.
I kept asking to train in a cirrus and everyone says not to do that, that is too difficult.
I think that is the hole I always hit, I am flying Cirrus as well (Avia)...
Nice video, thanks mate!
Just found your channel today, I like the vibe, and I would also ask, do you know of Mr Aviation 101? It would be a great thing to see you two visit each others countries and do a video.. Nice Video sir...
Thank you, yes I’ve followed MrAviation101’s channel for a while now. He makes some great videos, I’d definitely love to say hello one day for sure.
I remember being told the same thing but I filed a flight plan with SAR and sought permission to land there lol
Do let anybody tells u ,u can’t do something 💪
Thanks Stefan
Wise words to finish with
moorabin air museum was amzing but why not land there?
Huh, you got a good attitude man! My first video of yours I've watched. +1 Sub :)
come to Bendigo at some point
I'm with you. They say never do something and I did it anyway.
You have probably clocked a lot of hours and seen a lot of crowded airspace since your instructor said , "give that one a miss. Its not worth it" And to be fair, you could not even get your coffee. So?
Love your videos though. Especially the outback airfields.
Thank you for inspiring
Thanks for watching 👍
I did my first solo at Tooraddin!!
Awesome, that would be a good place to do circuit training for sure.
Even in the fifties, Tooradin was avoided like the plague - that is, unless your plane was there.
Melbourne Australia?
Yes, I believe there’s one in Florida, but this is Australia.
Can anyone help me? Crosswind, downwind and finals are locations right? If so when do you say: crosswind, downwind or final?
Next time come to California and fly into Hemet-Ryan 22L and see BAMBI hemet One.
That’s Mark Roberts territory!!
Was it him that put all the dents in the runway? 😄JK, I enjoy Mark's videos a lot.
I actually wouldn't be surprised. Some of his landings are abysmal! I made a safety report to CASA after watching one of his videos asking to have his licence revoked!
0:09 Mark's BSV!
Draviator so it is, well spotted.
That's the way, report a very professional pilot because you think you are an expert watching UA-cam videos. How often dooes your Mother let you use the internets?
Where can i find the intro song?
That's "One More" by Andre Aguado from Epidemic Sound.
Stefan Drury Thx! Btw; Droped you a mail :)
hey tooradin isnt that bad haha. can get pretty busy.
Gratuitous shot of VH-BSV there at 0:10 - nice.
I often see that aircraft around at Moorabbin. I think it gets used quite a lot, often hear it on the radio.
Yes, Mark Roberts uses it a fair bit - he has a very useful UA-cam channel that shows Moorabbin procedures and so on. Thanks for posting again.
This is Awesome!!!
Cool they have Yakovlev Yak-52 there :)
Nope. That’s a NanChang CJ-6A.
Great idea you have...lol, but that was an expensive cup of coffee that you didn't get ...lol
