  • Hey guys! This is going to be a slightly more serious video than usual. I recently got back from a two and a half week stay at the hospital for depression. I wanted my first video back to be tailored to that so I thought I would share some thoughts and tips for how I find the motivation to clean my house when I'm depressed. I hope you enjoy, please like, subcribe, and leave a comment if you do!

It's nice to see someone with the same four illnesses as me doing a cleaning video, instead of seeing the same rich supermum of four with their fancy house, tons of energy and flexing all of their pricey cleaning gadgets and vacuum cleaners.

"How I clean when I'm depressed is that... usually I do not clean at all." ACCURATE. I know those feelings so well. No kids over here, just cats - but there are 3 of them and some days it's all I can do to make sure they get fed on time. Today is better than yesterday. Good luck to you as well.

100% I needed this today , needed it so many times in my life too the point out of all the disorders I sometimes wish I had OCD rather than depression, anxiety PTSD and Agraphobia Got alot of friends with OCD and I mean to ask does it kick the shit out them having that like its does depression , but really fail to see how it can if they can conjure the energy to do it in the first place , I know the anxiety plays a part in that motivation but it's still getting you moving and releasing those endorphins . It's not even so much that the mess bothers me it's that it bothers others that it works that whole being judged like your lazy . My first job was a chamber maid and we would get 11 mins to clean the room bathrooms sometime have alot of your buses in and the place would be a riot so you would get say 100 rooms and be allocated that time to do them it's a great thing to do when your cleaning like the one mins rule or clean as you go rule.. but in theory me sticking to rituals and being orginsied feels like a torture in itself , despite the fact I know it's so much less hasstle if only we could all just flip a energy switch .. Just glad to have found this video if anything I feel slightly less alone . ❣

@@juliesanderson9398 I'm not sure exactly what you are saying, but I have OCD and it's extremely tough sometimes. It has caused me to have all of those other things you listed at some point, anxiety and depression especially. It definitely doesn't always make you more motivated. It does the opposite to me. I am by no means a neat freak. I was when I was a kid, but the obsessiveness can change to different aspects in life. The toll on your mind is what leads to anxiety and depression. They are all interconnected. I have trouble finding motivation to clean because it causes anxiety and feels overwhelming. I think about how I'm going to do it, and always naturally feel there is a right way to do it, and if I don't do something perfectly it's a failure. The more I put things off, the more overwhelming they seem. Probably not a lot different than you or other people who don't have OCD.
I'm not criticizing you at all, but it really bothers me when people think OCD is a good thing and everyone who has it is always clean and organized. That couldn't be farther from the truth. It's often paralysis by analysis.... obsessing leads to you not doing anything, and it feels like you're stuck and can't move.

I really needed this today... I live with a perfectionist family that doesnt understand all the things going on in my head. I suffer from ADHD, depression, anxiety and BPD. Sometimes I just *cant* get anything done 100%, even when I try, at least according to my family. Its made me beat myself up to the point where I just dont want to do anything anymore. Thank you for reminding me that its okay to not get it 100% done, and that the effort I put into it still matters.

I’m on them for a paralysed stomach but it will give you all the nutrients you need on days you really can’t eat. If it’s not a lack of eating then I’m sorry for bringing it up and I know suggestions from strangers can be super irritating- sending much love either way.. you got this and you WILL get there you’re worth fighting for but remember to be kind to yourself too 💜

Cleaning is the hardest thing for me, and depression has everything to do with it. The only way I can function is to break cleaning tasks into small pieces and to celebrate getting 70% done like you said. My dishes aren't spotless, but they're safe to eat out of and that's all I need.

I understand depression and anxiety because I have it, and I am a retired psych nurse, so I understand other mental illnesses. People do not understand how depression drains your energy. They think you are just being lazy or that it's the meds making you tired, or even that you are giving in to the depression. They don't understand that you have a finite amount of energy, and when that is gone, it's gone. You have given good advice and encouragement. Praying that God blesses you for it, and that you are able to improve. I have periods of recovery or remission, then something (like the death of the man I love), causes the disease to rear it's ugly head again. My dog helps a lot, by requiring care and walks. Anyway, thank you.

I never even realized or considered this as a topic. A video randomly showed up today, I've been going through a depression episode and crying a lot about my mess but not caring enough to clean it when everything seems so pointless anyway. As I've been crying and tripping on my laundry and stirring coffee with whatever gadget is still clean in the drawer, feeling ashamed but uninspired, depressed....(I am clinically diagnosed with complex ptsd, borderline PD, ADHD, and it's definitely a challenging journey), and I told myself that it is what it is until I'm ready to clean it. It's been extremely comforting to find these videos. Thank you 🕉

I'm on medication to help with my depression, anxiety, and PTSD but it still isn't enough to get back to caring for myself and my space like I used to. I went from nice, neat, clean, and everything in it's place to my space looking like an episode of hoaders. I'm praying your video help me through this. Boy oh boy can I relate to this video. I was superwoman from about 1960 when I first married until about 2015. Husband died, kids left home, what is the point of even getting up in the morning? And then it perpetuates itself. You start rejecting friends because you’re ashamed of the way your house looks. Just doing the dishes and scrubbing down the shower is too daunting. Tonight I cleaned my kitchen, no not really clean just did the dishes, and changed my sheets because my dog threw up in the bed. Baby steps.

I have the same diagnosis’ as you and thank you for this! It’s a constant struggle and I just recently started ECT treatments. I know that’s not a realistic thing for everyone but I thought I would suggest it to you for you to look into and talk to your doctors about as a possible treatment. It’s not for everyone but honestly was my last hope for getting my treatment resistant depression under control and my last hope to not suffer every day for the rest of my life and to be a better mother to my son. Like I said it’s not for everyone but I think it could help more people if they knew about it! Hope you’re feeling better and I want you to know YOU ARE WORTHY, YOU ARE LOVED AND YOU ARE WORTH IT! Love and light 💞✨

You are right, we have been taught that to be a good job you have to do it ALL at once..no you don't. Love your tip too of putting the drain plugs in the dishwasher to clean! I have never done that b4...anyway thanks so much for all of this and just being YOU!!

That reminder that we are raised to only be rewarded when something is finished really resonated with me bc I have trouble starting things I’m concerned I can’t or won’t finish for whatever the reason. I never made the connection between that programming and my actions as an adult. Thank you for your openness and affirmations.

New subscriber good for you for tackling your home chores. Its tough when we have those chores.I find doing a little every day helps. My kids are now adults but I remember how tiring those busy days were then having the depression makes it hard to get all the cleaning done. Here I am now 30 yrs later and the depression has become more manageable. Your right when are home is clean and clutter free its less depressing♡

Love your honesty and bravery. I also have battled depression since I was a teenager and I know how hard it is just to even get out of bed some days. I love that you said you don't need to finish a task to feel good about it, and by doing a little bit is better than doing nothing. I know that for me, I would let things go because they seemed overwhelming, but I have trained myself to do what I can, and it does make me feel better.
Thanks for sharing your mental health journey 🙏 all my best to you.

I just ran across your video. Thank you for sharing this. I suffer from severe depression and anxiety and I too was in the hospital from December 20,2023-January 2,2024. I was in there for respiratory failure. Was on a ventilator for a week. I have really been having trouble getting my health and strength back. I try to keep my house picked up the best I can. My Christmas tree is still up. Just put the little bit of decorations in a box today. My fiancee works 12 hours a day. So he can’t do much to help. I get so tired and frustrated with myself because I am so used to taking care of my house and my business. He brings fast food home alot or we junk around because I don’t feel like being up cooking. Please post more videos about what you do or how I can handle this

1:12 I can relate! I call them my bare-minimum-mom days; feels like I’m on autopilot. I’d rather be in bed those days and can get bitter about being needed. But in retrospect I realize how my kids (simply by virtue of needing me) pull me outside myself and keep me from slipping into a deeper depression on those days. Of course, there’s a time for self care and it’s good to hear you recognized that need. Your encouragement is also very wise - as a perfectionist I tend to procrastinate when it comes to tackling the clutter and cleaning. I think it’s that “all or nothing” mindset, like why bother if I can’t do it perfectly or can’t commit X amount of time without interruptions. “If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing badly.” -G.K. Chesterton. Or “worth doing for one minute” 🙂

I start by making a list of things I did already. I got out of bed, I brushed my hair, etc and check them off. I do this so I already feel like I accomplished something by having 5 or 6 checked off items. Then below I make a list of what I want to do for the next FEW DAYS, so I dont feel guilty for not completing it at the end of the day. Vacuum bedroom, clean bathroom, wipe down table, etc.

I really needed this. This helps. I have to kinda force myself through since day after tomorrow my apartment is being inspected, which is rough because I’ve been very depressed, and my place is a mess. I was going day by day doing deep clean, but it broke me and today I barely was able to do anything at all. Now I know tomorrow basically get to taking out trash and make sure pizza boxes aren’t strewn about. Plus the people doing the inspection know I suffer from extreme depression so they won’t be mean to me (which is what I’ve been afraid of). I just get into this ptsd fueled zone where I try to clean something and I go hyper clean then the rest of my home is a pigsty. But my bathroom is nice and bleachy! I also have trouble asking for help when I really should. Omg sorry for just unleashing in the comments here. Thank you for having that space to though.

Hey! This is the first time I have been specifically looking for content on depression and cleaning. I have moved house a month and a half ago and shortly after I upped my working hours. I never took time of from work for the move. All this, looking at it now, seems like signs of poor selfcare while at the same time craving appreciation from outside (work). Well, that did not work out for me at all. I am drained and do not perform well at work anymore and do not perform at all (almost) in my free time. Soooo: Thank you for that video, for the time and effort you took to make it, for the thought put into it and for the space to talk about depression and (not) cleaning!

Im soooooooo overwhelmed with all the cleaning I have to do. I suffer from debilitating migraines, horrible anxiety and even more so horrible depression. I cried throughout your whole video. I managed to clean for a couple hours this morning but it really doesn't even look like it. But I heard you tell me doing a little is better than doing nothing. Thank you. I still have SO much more to do. With no help bc of embarrassment/ anxiety and the depression. Im running out of time though any pointers? I believe I will be starting working from home and I can't even get the house clean for them to come hook anything up. I started this morning, had to run an errand and it only took an hour and a half, when I got back I was and still am totally exhausted. I can't get myself to do anything now except sit and cry and go through videos.

I'm watching this as I eat the salmon salad I made for mysealf which is so tasty and healthy. Went to the the grocery store to pick up the ingredients and it was all worth it. I was thinking about how easy it would be to go get fast food for 1/3 of the price but honestly I feel so satisfied and I know I'm getting healthier physically and mentally. It's truly a blessing to have this experience and now after my fabulous meal I made for myself I will clean up my room.

I read somewhere that anything worth doing is worth doing poorly. I'm so used to if you can't do it right then don't do it. But I like the that statement and had to really think about it. I guess if it's worth doing then at least do a portion of it. I suffer from a lot of ailments and mental issues so it helped me not think about perfection and finishing a task. I can relate to what you are talking about. Thanks for this video!

Thank you for this video! I really liked the part about how our society focuses on finishing a task. It's refreshing to hear someone talk about what you did accomplished as opposed to what you didn't finish. When you clean, do you find it helpful to listen to something or does that distract you?

I am grateful that on the weeks with my kids I am forced to cook, run the dishwasher and do laundry. On weeks without them when I am not functioning those things won't happen until I run out of clean dishes and clothes. But months and months and months on end of only dealing with dishes, laundry and garbage means that the clutter starts to fill every available space. That makes it a more overwhelming problem to deal with every single week.
