  • This is Part 4 of this mini series and I will show you how to install and ascend with a two-way mechanical device like the Madrock Safeguard. The Madrock Safeguard is a Mechanical Belay(descending) device that also allows you to ascend just like using the devices shown in Part 3.
    The benefit of using a two-way device is that you can use the same device and rope to Climb(ascend) and Rappel(descend), without changing any equipment during your hunt. Although these devices are only necessary if you are rappelling as your method of descent, it can be used by One-stick, multi stick, AND SRT climbers.
    There are many options when it comes to this type of device, but the most popular is the Madrock Safeguard, Petzl GriGri+, and the Beal Birdie. Being the most popular, the Madrock Safeguard is the one we will be demoing today…
    --- Make sure to go back and check out the first 3 parts, and please subscribe to get notifications when I upload the next part of this series. Also, please like this video, share it with your huntin' buddies, and leave me a comment to tell me what you would like to see next!
    Also, please like and follow my Facebook page so you can get access to upcoming giveaways!!

    In this mini series I discuss the 3 types of ascenders, and how to use each type. The series will include:
    *Part 1: "Freedom of Choice"
    I will explain what an ascender does, tell you the 3 types of ascenders used by saddle hunters, and how to rig and use each type.
    **Part 2: "Friction Hitches"
    I will demonstrate in detail and in real time how to tie, install, and ascend with the 3 most common rope type friction hitches used by saddle hunters.
    ***Part 3: "One Way Ascenders"
    I will demonstrate in detail and in real time how to install and ascend with one way ascenders such as the the Kong Duck and Ropeman 1.
    ****Part 4: "Two Way Ascenders/Descenders"
    I will demonstrate in detail and in real time how to install and ascend with two way ascend/descend devices such as the Madrock Safeguard. The Rappel demonstration will be in a separate video.
    Thank you so much for watching!!

      You will like it. It is a very good one stick! I had one before I bought the Ultimate 1 stick. I sold it to my buddy that got into it at the same time I did, and he likes it a lot. I’ll do a video for you very soon comparing the wingman and the Ultimate stick. I believe these 2 are the best available right now. I hear that EWO is coming out with some new stuff this year too. I really wish that the Catalyst Ion was still being made. They looked great.

    What is the roll pouch! I need that . Super helpful video!

    • @robzmancave
      @robzmancave  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind words! The roll pouch makes a world of difference. Most of them come with one cinch strap for the rope and one for the pouch which allows the rope to wiggle out while walking in. 2 straps is the way to go! If you go to my Facebook page(link is in the description) and message me I will give you the guys profile link. He does amazing work and quick turnaround. I have bought 2 of them from him.

      You will get used to it and won’t be so nervous. Once you find that sweet spot it’ll be second nature and you will be able to go as fast or slow as you want without all the jerky starts and stops.
      My problem was, in my mind, I was trying to control my descent with my brake hand, but I was self consciously throttling the safeguard lever. Now, before my descent I’ll put about 60% body weight on the safeguard, I pull down on my tag end with my brake hand, open the safeguard about 75%, and control speed and start/stop with my brake hand. No more jerky starts.

    Why don’t you use your aider on your first move? I find that my first move is my biggest move as I can set the stick really high when I’m standing on the ground.

      I use my aider on all moves. The first move I use all steps, but after that I don’t use the bottom step. If you mean in this video, it was just for demonstration purposes.

    What do you recommend for belay rope? Using a madrock safeguard?

    • @robzmancave
      @robzmancave  2 роки тому +1

      I highly recommend 9mm Canyon Elite. I have had great experience with it, even when wet. I cannot speak for freezing conditions, but just about any other condition I can say it performs well with the safeguard. You can buy it by the foot here:
      doublesteps.com/product/9mm-canyon-elite/
      My second recommendation would be 9mm Sterling C-IV. I do not personally have experience with this rope, but I know people who do, and love it. And it is within spec for the safeguard. You can find it here:
      doublesteps.com/product/sterling-c-iv-canyon-rope/
      A lot of guys are using 8mm Sterling Oplux and claiming without issue, but it is out of spec for the safeguard. I recommend staying within the specified range of 8.9mm to 11mm static ropes.

    I recently got a mad rock safeguard and plan on practicing for next season. How long have you been using it and have you had any issues?

    • @robzmancave
      @robzmancave  Рік тому +1

      Hey Dewayne! I just finished my second season using it. I am using it on 9mm Canyon Elite rope and have had no issues. In fact, I am very comfortable with operating it now, opposed to how sketched out I was at first. It definitely took some getting used to it. But I played around with it at ground level, then at about 8 ft until I could get predictable results while operating it. Let me know if I can help in any way!

    This was a great tutorial on the mad rock safeguard. I challenge you to learn how to tie the longhorn agile hitch not only does it replace ALL of the functions of the mad rock but it is also safer, cheaper and there is no metal to metal contact. Check out jrb tree climbing and saddle hunting channel on UA-cam.

      I am familiar with the longhorn agile, as well as JRB. I’m a big advocate for his style! I’m also already in his FB group, and follow his UA-cam. I actually did a video with him at the expo a few weeks ago. It’s on my channel. He’s awesome

    Do you use a backup hitch above device or autoblock on brake hand side at hunting height while hunting and for descent?

    • @robzmancave
      @robzmancave  Рік тому

      I don’t use either. But a backup hitch above the device is recommended. Am working to get to that point, but at this point it’s just me the safeguard, and the rope. 😂

    Do you know what the difference are between the madrock safe guard and madrock life guard. I am SRT climbing . Like to know before I order. thanks

    • @robzmancave
      @robzmancave  2 роки тому

      The only difference is the lifeguard has a spring, and the safeguard does not. Functionality is basically the same when rappelling since there is always a load during decent. The issue with the lifeguard is that when there is no load on it, the spring will open the cam and when you put a load in it again it might fail to lock back up. So if you plan on using it as an ascender, plan to keep it connected while hunting, and to rappel with, I suggest the safeguard. If you are going to use a separate ascender to climb with and ONLY going to rappel with the madrock, either one will work.

    why don’t you hunters watch august hunicke’s or guilty of treeson’s if you want to really learn how to get up into and climb a tree, to where you’re actually having fun in the tree. there’s sooo much easier ways to climb a tree with waayyy less effort.

      Everyone has a different definition of “easier”. I am very comfortable, confident, and efficient with this method. But, since I have never heard of either of those, I’ll be sure to check them out.
