- I did Winston Churchill's wild daily routine! I love learning about British culture and this felt like a funny way to try something new!
I had so much fun trying out this experiment - if you have another daily routine of a famous Brit you'd like me to try, let me know!

Hey! I'm Alanna - a thirty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a UA-cam video every Tuesday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.
Alanna x
Thanks so much for the love on this video, everyone! ☺ If you want to check out my fragrance business (in particular the one inspired by Churchill) you can find it here! edenbridge.co.uk/products/chartwell
Multi courses and champagne 😅
Sarcasm is getting better 😁
14:49 A bit apt that shout from outside as Alanna🥃 swigged the Brandy 🎉 down 😂
I will check it out for sure!!
does the fragrance smell like Whisky burps and cigar smoke... maybe a touch of old hardwood panelling?
do you have a sample pack of everting you do and if so how much is it and do you deliver. as for video i do love it when Rachel comes out to play she is so funny not saying your not but she know how tot push it further and still deliver on on content not saying you can not do it but its clearly what Rachel does best :)
You did very well considering you don't drink too much normally so well done ✅
Next time you go shopping for the booze look for banana liqueur , so next time you do a test with shorts and they don't taste to well just add a drop ( eye drop size or a couple of ) to the drink and it will taste far better , but be careful it doesn't become a habit 😉 .
Come to think of it I've never done it with beer , cider or champagne etc so you can always do one of your reaction tests but just drink no more than 1/2 pint at a time , or smaller 😂
I heard his Whiskey and Sodas were SUPER weak. Very little Whiskey and mostly Soda Water. When I saw you pouring those Double Shots my Heart went out to you!😂
"Mr. Churchill, you are drunk!"
"And you, Madam, are ugly, but in the morning, I shall be sober!"
"If you were my husband, I would poison your drink!"
"If you were my wife, Madam, I would drink it!"
You beat me to it...🤗
Read "The Wicked Wit of Winston".
I can just envisage your mother watching this and going, " Oh no, not ANOTHER drinking video! My poor baby!"😂
😅
Churchill had a small dash of whisky with lots of soda in a large glass, it was not a full measure of whisky and as a result would be low in alcohol. It was to provide some flavour and was a habit he picked up in India to make the water palatable.
I also heard he had malaria and it was to cleanse the water to some degree
@@NoBSRecoverfactsmalaria cures quickly you know this right😂?
I think it was in South Africa.
The Bloke smoked 6-8 good Quality Cuban cigars a Day too! And lived to be 90! love it!!
In next week's episode of "Alcoholism for Beginners", Alanna tries Keith Moon's daily routine and tries not to explode.
John Bonham for the next video 😂
That's both hysterical and frightening
😂
Keith Richard!
She might have a hard time getting her hands on all the illicit substances and subsequently not ODing. 😂
It’s a very common scene in movies about posh families to show the butler ironing the newspaper before it is taken upstairs. This was actually done, but not to present a nice smooth newspaper. It was to dry the ink, to stop it getting everywhere.
One of my favourite parts of Churchills routine was the fact that if he couldn't sleep at night or was up late trying to find inspiration for a speech he would pace up and down in one of the big rooms while listening to marching band music, drinking and smoking cigars. How about adding that to the Naps daily regime. 😀😀😎
Never in the field of UA-cam was so much owed by so many to Alanna!
Fantastic historical reference !!! Love it 👍
Okay that whole experiment was fantastic to watch and seeing Alanna get progressively sloshed throughout the day was a lot of fun. I am left with the realization that one of the greatest war leaders was perennially legless.
I knew that Churchill had a very unusual daily routine. Clearly it worked for him! It is the first time that I have seen a UA-camr carry out a daily routine of a famous person, so well done Alanna! ✌✌✌✌
Hitler has a glass of water and look what happened to him.
A brave girl, definitely deserving of our support - or rescue.
That was great! I felt that this video embodied the channel name. There were adventures - many of them bottled - and also naps! And your face peeping over the foam in the bath made me LOL! 😆
Glad you enjoyed it!
As a history lover, I appreciate this video!
Ahh yay! So glad to hear it ☺️
As a binge drinker I approve this video.
This is a really unique idea for a video! It was fun to watch, I didn’t know Churchill had such a strange daily routine lol, so it was interesting to learn about it! You did a great job with this video!
Thank you so much!!
It's amazing!
It's not that strange of a routeen for the haves in society. Think about Partygate cheese and wine at work doesn't count as a party? Watch "Hello Minister" or early "James Bond" brandy or Scotch in every meeting.
His drinks were really diluted- 7 parts water to 1 part whiskey. Also, he had a tray table made for working in bed. I often stay in bed til 11, drinking tea, on the laptop etc, I don't know why you found it so hard!
Some of us don't feel comfortable staying in bed once we are awake and I think Alanna is one of us
I have to say this was one of your crazier ideas for a video, but it was so amusing to follow you on this particular journey of discovery - it’s for sure that WSC was an unusual person and whilst I admire him enormously, I’m not sure my stomach and liver could put up with his routine for very long. I hope your equilibrium is now restored. By the way, one of my favourite champagnes is Pol Roger (Churchill’s preferred house), although the one I return to whenever possible is Veuve Cliquot, my own favourite for very many years 🍾🥂 - cheers 😂.
"Never, in the field of You Tubing was so much owed by so many to so few (you)". Cheers Alana - great fun!
This video idea was GENIUS! Next, try a day of the Queen Mum! 👸
Or a Day in the Life of Princess Margret
Seriously impressed with your dedication to seeing this out, I like the way the alcohol was accurate, the food, probably, not so accurate.
And not his five cigars
A total A+N classic, one of the best you've ever done! Is it terribly wrong of me that I'm quite tempted to try this one at the weekend? 😁
I take no responsibility for what happens if you try! 😂
What an interesting video, I’m a big fan of late nights most of my life. The building, the street, the city all goes quiet. No phone calls, messages, nobody asking you for anything or to do anything, finally some time for your mind to relax. Might not be healthy all the time but now and then I think it works wonders, thanks for the vid Alana!
Fantastic idea for a video !!! Churchill was notoriously unconventional , with a great , dry , sarcastic sense of humour . Not unlike a certain Canadian you tuber we all know and love !!!😂
😂 Thank you so much for watching!
He was a racist. He is still strongly opposed by many in South Wales to this day for sending troops to the area in 1910-11 when the Tonypandy riots took place, disturbances between the authorities and striking miners. He had to address it as late as 1950 when campaigning in the election in the area, where he claimed to have been a supporter of the miners. Not what the facts around the General Strike of 1926 show either, where he was put in charge of government propaganda sheet The British Gazette by PM Baldwin to keep him out of the way. In 1945 he claimed Labour would need a UK version of the Gestapo to implement the welfare state, including the NHS. His wife told him not to make such an inflammatory, offensive remark but he went ahead. A disgrace on so many levels, notwithstanding his wartime leadership.
@@eightiesmusic1984 He was an escaped POW in the Boer War as well. Both Nelson and Grey were problematic too but so far no-one has tried to pull their statues down.
@@hairyairey The British Empire should not have existed in the first place and there would have been no Boer War. So what that he was a POW. No doubt that some of the statues should be taken down peaceably by negotiation and put in museums with explanatory context.
@@eightiesmusic1984 And yet without the British Empire (and other colonisers) world trade would be completely different now. This is why we have a Commonwealth of nations, because it was overall a good idea. It's not for nothing that English is a global language. You can even use it to criticise the British Empire 😂
Love this video! Hilarious. He used to drink actually very little whisky with the soda he would call it his “mouthwash”
The greatness of the man is only made better by his eccentricities... his wit is legendary, his writing (on subjects he was expert in) fills several shelves, his speeches are still quoted over 80 years later. I love that he would put on a boiler suit and build a brick wall or paint fantastic watercolour paintings and enjoy long friendly meetings with world leaders in the same way we go shopping or catch the bus. I love that he was a war hero, escaped prison, and impressed his bodyguard with his eagerness to engage a would be assassin with his own pistol. I loved that his devoted wife eagerly beavered behind the scenes to smooth over potential embarrassments and that they remained faithful to the end.
War hero? No. He only went into the army as a penance for his role in the disastrous Gallipoli campaign in the First World War. I'd read some history if I were you.
@@eightiesmusic1984 He joined the British Army in 1895 and saw action in British India, the Anglo-Sudan War, and the Second Boer War, gaining fame as a war correspondent and writing books about his campaigns. In late 1899, Winston Churchill was catapulted to prominence following the famous armoured train attack and his subsequent escape from a Boer prison camp. I do read sometimes...do you?
@@eightiesmusic1984 . Sometimes it’s better to just admit when you’re wrong.
The greatest Britain that ever lived just ahead of David Beckham 👍
So for me this top tier, gold standard youtube entertainment! I love when you do these videos lass, simply love them!
Speaking as one who wakes at 6.30, reads the papers, writes (using an A4 ringbinder as a surface), and rises about 10, 10.30am, I feel where Winston made his mistake was with the whisky. Three cups of strong tea, that's the ticket! Also, the trick to eating in bed is to put a pillow on your lap and a tray on the pillow.
But whisky is much better than tea. Tea is only nice with biscuits. Can't eat biscuits all day.
What an entertaining video! I would have fallen asleep long before midnight. I'd love to see an exploration of Geroge Eliot's day; blocks of writing, reading, walking, socializing. Keep up the good work. :)
Great suggestion!
I need to recover just watching, I’m sure you need to. Strong recovery Alanna 😭🙏🙏 Cheers for this brilliantly hilarious vlog! ✌️
Thanks so much!
Lol I usually drink way more Hennessey than that lol
I hope you realise how we appreciate the lengths you go to for our entertainment Alanna...so amusing.
Thanks. BTW - like the new glasses. It makes it more impressive that he accomplished so much.
That was such a unique video - only Alanma could come up with somethign like this - just loved it!
I really enjoyed this video. Still can't get over how much Churchill drank in a day and everyday and ruled the country as a functioning alcoholic.
🤣🤣 What a funny video. You were much like a dying swan as you crashed during the day. Churchill could take it but you couldn't. 🤣🤣 Let's see you do it for a week. 🤣🤣
Hysterical. I'm stunned at the wee drams you poured... and drank! I would be face down on the floor by your 5 PM Cognac blast. A nap at that point... sure, for about 10 hours.
Didn't he also smoke and chew on cigars all day long? Well, glad you didn't include that fine habit of his.
Loved this video. Love you. Keep up the great gonzo journalism!! 💖
Most of the day Churchill was stark naked, while entertaining several people as he was in his bath. I don't feel you were entering fully into the spirit of it. 🤣😁
I was thinking how amusing the high speed chewing was before you put up the caption. Not that I'm encouraging smoking, but you forgot the cigars!
House robe! 🤔 I call it a dressing gown.... 😀 It does sounds pretty old-fashioned thinking about it, especially because I always seem to ware one on top of my clothes in the winter, because my house is old and cold.
You forgot to have your daily newspaper ironed by your household staff. During WWII food rationing Churchill ate more in a day than most people ate in a week.
Churchill would have his secretary in his bedroom and dictate to her.
Watch the film Darkest hour. That is a good portrait of his routine. A good film to. Keep up the good work
It never fails to astonish me how some people can be functioning alcoholics. My grandmother worked until 4pm every day, came home, put her PJs on and started to binge drink and chain smoke to Dr. Phil. By 5:15 she would say "I really looooove that Dr. Phil..." Stammer into the den and pass out cold for two hours, only wake up to resume the drinking. She did that for 40 years and by the time she was 80 she had fairly well pickled herself. They are functional until they aren't 😣
Magnificent. Pissed Alana is great. Pissed Alana kidding on as Churchill is deliriously good.
Alanna trying to convince us this is all for a Churchill video when it is really just her own daily schedule. Kent gets you like that sometimes.
Just watched your vid at 8 in the morning on a day off and the thought of having a whisky 😵 what a trooper Alanna. Laughed all the way through what a great post. You gotta do more like this.👍❤️
Churchill was one for receiving guests while he was naked in the bath, so well done for going for authenticity!
Winston Churchill was a lot bigger than Alanna and could easily handle that amount of alcohol. The sacrifices Alanna makes in the name of science...😅🧪
Winston Churchill was an alcoholic
😂 Thanks for watching!
i'm kinda blown away, honestly! The whiskey and soda had to have been weaker... as in 1 shot of whiskey to a generous helping of water ---- right?! 😮
edit to add: The phrase "Drunk as a Lord" springs to mind. 😂
famously, it was only enough whiskey to cover the bottom of the cup, so probably less than a shot with a ton of water. @@Stephanie-we5ep
@@Stephanie-we5epHis alcohol tolerance was likely incredibly high and it wouldn’t affect a 300 lb man as much as a 100 lb woman. (gender and race also play a role when it comes to alcohol), but I still think you’re right, that whiskey doesn’t look watered down very much at all.
Great video Alanna, but you forgot the cigars!
Where are the cigars? 😂
Didn’t realise I was on the Churchill diet, whisky and cigars. Brilliant - I can look forward to living to 90
This is fantastic!! Loved your commitment to it all. A terrific video!
Oh my Word! Alanna the best bit for me was the speeded up breakfast eating LOL 🤣🤣
I wish you would do a day in Olive Reed
The unsung heroes of the Churchill story. . . his stomach, liver, kidneys and bowel. . . special shout out for his lungs. . .
Love Love Loved!! 😂 More of these!!! You have shown me a way to get away with drinking in public! I’ll keep that trick in my back pocket for when necessary.
Fantastic idea for a vid! Really enjoyed it. I knew Churchill was a piss artist, but it's nice to see it 'acted out'.
You deserve citizenship for doing that. No questions or forms to be completed you have achieved legend status in life! And oh your poor liver!
Excellent video.Very scientific but you forgot the Cigars,
Mixing grape and grain! I feel a hangover coming on in Sympathy
Next morning Alanna was found fast asleep in the local park with a empty whisky bottle at her side.!
I've only just started watching but wow, I can tell this is going to be an... interesting video! I hope you recovered quickly Alanna!
Omg Alanna! You can't walk the streets drinking! 😂
That was hilarious, such a great idea! I hope you've recovered from your sleep deprivation & possible alcohol poisoning hahaha
Ahh thank you Gem!! ☺️
Just think of all those people who passed Alanna on her walk and could smell the alcohol in her cup. 😎
Alanna's a former Medway girl. Street drinking here is a career choice... 🤣
@@SaharaGadge 🤣so true 🤣You can take the girl out of Chatham but you can't take the Chatham out the girl lol 🤣
13:22 my fav part of the video lol I love Hennessy! In all of it's variations!
Fair play to you for giving Churchill's diet a try. Bloody-hell, that takes courage.
The rum tot should be brought back, "liver massage"! 😂😊
Given that he lived a lifestyle that no doctor in their right mind would ever recommend it's quite remarkable that Winston Churchill lived till he was 95
90 rather than 95. But anyways, I agree that he defies belief.
Your dedication and commitment for the sake of the channel is great! Keep up the good work (though with less alcohol 😂).
Hilarious. Thank you for your endeavours, it must have been hard drinking all day. I did see another crew do a similar thing, but they also tried to smoke the cigars as well! I look forward to your next video.
We must thank Alanna for her great work in the name of research
You always make me smile, and lately, that's kinda hard for me to do.
🙏
The tipsy vibe throughout this entire video is hilarious
The fact that you were still awake at 5pm is an accomplishment! Fun video! 😂
Having read the 1,150+ page biography Churchill: Walking with Destiny. He was an interesting man. Good for you for attempting this! I'm guessing his Whisky & Soda ratio would be more like 2 shots Whisky:1 drop soda water. As a whiskey lover myself that is about all the water I would want. No computers or emails in Churhill's days. Not invented yet! Walking in the park, not in a straight line, hmm was that the wind or the whisky at work? Ha Ha Great vid
Your guess is wrong. He had much more water than whisky, supposedly 7 parts water to 1 of whisky.
This is a generic comment, not specific to this video. Bearing in mind I am old enough to be your father and that is how I am responding to your videos, , you are just enchanting. Your videos are just fantastic, you should be very proud of them. I know you no longer have your father but, my God, he would be so proud of the woman you have become.
Two Churchill quotes:
"a magnum is the perfect size for two gentlemen to have over lunch, especially if one isn’t drinking.”
"Remember gentlemen, it’s not just France we are fighting for. It’s Champagne."
Funny how your hair style changed at lunch time😀.
you are one hell of a brave lady taking this challenge on its hardcore
Churchill had a budgerigar that would perch on his head as he worked on papers in bed and, from time to time, hopped down his arm for a beakful of his whisky and soda.
Where’s your budgie?
I really really enjoyed this vlog. You were so funny. I would of passed out long long before you did. Thanks
Churchill was very much of his time. He was born in 1874 and will've been 40/41 when he served in WW1. He was 70 in 1944, so you were kind-of following the routine of a pensioner here, so fair enough he enjoyed his food and had developed a strong alcohol tolerance.
Yeeah, I suspect Churchill will've had a bath run for him and likely got woke up about when it was ready, which would save a lot of time.
Definitely a fun idea for a video. and fun generally. 'Definitely-not'-drunk Alanna is always amusing also. Also, you didn't set an alarm when you had the nap in the evening?
That was crazy. And really funny. You have to train yourself gradually over a period of time to drink that much alcohol on a regular basis-and it will probably damage your health and reduce your lifespan, but some people manage to beat the odds. It’s weird that you think 8 p.m. is a late hour at which to have dinner. I live in Spain, where no-one starts dinner until at least 9 p.m.
Missed this vid, which is odd as I have never missed any of your videos ever. I feel so guilty now. Loved this vid..........I am not sure why but seeing you get drunk is kind of joyful.
PS
You have come along way since you started youtubing and its great to see you out of your shell which you once where living in.
Your so good and so happy all the time, its catching.
Whisky at 7.30am! Anything you'd like to talk about 😂😂
Fun video, love it. Thank you
But no cigars Alanna? You really needed to smoke the cigars to complement the flavour of the champagne.
Winnie wasn't the only famous Englishman to subsist largely on a diet of champagne and cigars. There was a very famous jockey named 'Lester Piggot' who was said to do the same.
He didn't have a scotch for breakfast. He had whisky and soda. It was something he picked up from his days abroad; he was 'flavouring' his water and 'disinfect' it, fighting cholera 😅 it was really that much alcohol in the glass.
I'm sure Churchill was all about the bubble bath.
It was close but you really needed a butler, housemaid and a doorman to really set the scene.
Excellent video Alanna! Remember Churchill had servants to run baths and cook etc!
So glad you didn't try to copy DaVinci's day.
Da Vinci slept for 20 minutes every 4 hours, for 2 hours a day. He had a structured diet rich in water, fiber, and vegetables and low in fat, sugar, and salt. He combined his sleep schedule with habits like journaling, self-affirmation, and athleticism.
I was looking forward to seeing you smoke a cigar with your brandy… 🤣
Congratulations on surviving. Really pleased you were not smoking cigars (or cigarettes or pipe) - you remain a goddess. Thanks for all of your videos. Peter
This was my favourite video yet... More more more
Supposedly Churchill's whisky and water would be a long drink, 1 shot whisky and a lot of water, something he supposedly sipped a lot through the day. Along with about 5 - 10 large cigars!
Well done Alanna! A tough day but someone has to do it. Time for a drink and a paracetamol ? Many thanks for sharing.
Alanna, did you ever hear the story about when Churchill was shown a week's wartime food ration? He said it looked like a very good meal. :)
I would of loved to see you smoke all the cigars!
Fun show
Hello from New Brunswick
It's a dressing gown! Bathrobe seems very American. Hosecoat (I think) is something slightly different!
If you do this again, he only used the whisky to flavour the water and to stave of effects of malaria. Well done!
Churchill had very very watered down whisky - The Whisky and soda was Soda, and soda, and soda and a splash of whisky .. topped up with soda several times whilst he drank it ...
He had a small very short table and sat up in bed with it over his lap, basically he was sat down with his legs up .... he also had a telephone so he could make and receive calls in bed
Later in the day he drank more ... and didn't have a healthy diet, but portion size is important, his drinks were not large, formal food was complex, and lots of courses, but small portions
With the sleep, and nap - he got 6 hours sleep every 24 hours ...
He drank quite a lot (but not as much as most people think), and was likely not entirely sober for most of the day, but never drunk, and didn't eat the most healthy diet, and didn't get enough exercise ... and he died of not his first stroke aged 90 ...
Oh Goody! An Alanna gets drunk vid... I'll get the popcorn. Honestly, any excuse with this girl. That was great fun, you are very entertaining when you are tipsy. Of course Churchill had the advantage of a house full of servants and had been living this lifestyle for most of his life. Very well done though.
You did a good job. II love in Tonbridge Kent for a few months several years ago. Great memories. loved it. I have read that Churchill's morning drinks were just soda water with just a spot of Johnny Walker for flavor. The whiskey barely covered the bottom of the glass. 😁 I am going to check out your fragrances. I wish you made some Churchill inspired wax melts.
Great video! I Hope this becomes a series, up next the daily routine of Mark E. Smith...
Thanks for watching!
Get up, drink, sack a band member.
Hi,enjoyed this, found informative and so funny, being English and from Essex just across the Thames from you in Kent,I would never have thought Churchills day would be like that, I'm surprised he made all those great speeches half pissed, right man for the right time🏴🇬🇧
Churchill? No cigar!
Sorry, let me try that again.....No cigars?!
Oh Alanna, I don’t consume alcohol these days, but even when I did, alcohol in the morning was just a way to postpone a hangover from the night before. Alcohol at lunchtime always resulted in a headache by late afternoon. You did well to put off the headache until midnight. He never looked the healthiest of individuals did he. Point of order: I did not see you smoke one single cigar 😂😂 so you owe us a video with you doing that 😂😂. Very enjoyable.
Oh Alana. The sacrifices you make for our adoration are remarkable. On the bed routine Churchill had the advantage of built in cushions and a large table. You are far more svelte than he.
