Wow - the situation you described with the dishwasher was extremely dangerous. So so bad, that should never ever have happened. Whoever wired that up should be prosecuted.
For a short while I worked for a property letting company, and I've seen all this first-hand -repairs that never get done, sub-standard and potentially lethal electrical and gas installations, foisting responsibility and costs onto the tenants, hanging onto deposits -I was really glad to get away from it as I couldn't stand working for a crook. I thoroughly endorse your advice to get everything documented and photographed, and never, ever, move into a property where the landlord promises to fix faults once you've moved in. I'm glad you're now in a better place both physically and mentally.
As an owner of rental properties I cannot imagine behaving the way this landlord has done. The rental agency has also behaved in an unscrupulous manner as well. So glad you are not under those organizations now. Lesson: Deal only with the leasing agency for communications and copy the landlord.
my landlord is lovely, her husband died a few months ago, we cook food for each other, I was a chef for 3 decades, she can cook. It's so nice to have a meal prepared for you after a long day at work in hospital theatres! Typically 10 hours on my feet"
Alanna - you and your partner should have done the following 6 things: 1) Inform the letting agent of ALL these problems straight away as one happened. That's what letting agents are there for. 2) Informed the local council of all these issues. 3) Employed a solicitor to write letters to the landlord *from the outset of these problems* to advise him of his legal responsibilities and your legal rights. 4) Found another place to live PDQ 5) If needs be put the whole matter in the hands of your solicitor. 6) If you can't afford a solicitor, go to the CAB (Citizens' Advice Bureau). In the case of the dodgy wiring in the property, this could easily have proved fatal. I believe I am correct in saying that not only does the *landlord* have a legal obligation to supply a current Gas Certificate, but the *Letting Agents ALSO* have that legal obligation - unless there is no gas supply to the property, that is. The behaviour of the landlord was unacceptable and you should have informed the police. In fact, coming into the property without prior notice is illegal. Rogue landlords like this need to be shut down in order that future tenants do not have to suffer what you guys suffered. He was in contravention of the law on each and every one of these incidents. This guy earns money by letting out his property. Where a landlord uses a letting agent, the landlord should NEVER suggest that you go to them first if there are problems. This in and of itself shows a complete lack of professionalism on his part and should set alarm bells ringing. In essence, this man should be spending time behind bars at Her Majesty's pleasure. Sadly, as the tragic and entirely preventable fire at Grenfell Tower demonstrates, many landlords cannot be trusted, and the laws which regulate the letting of properties are often not enforced.
It's tricky though. The renter experience is normally... 1) The letting agent will completely ignore you. You can never speak to the same person twice. They side with the landlord and generally gaslight you for making any complaint, while also being just generally useless at their own administration to the point you can't bare to talk to them anymore. 2) The local council... same as the letting agent but with more admin and less staff. Possibly no humans to speak to. 3) Employing a soliciter - Generally the only good option but only possible if you have the money. In most cases you decide it's not worth the cost or hassel and you just survive and get out of the contract as soon as you can. 4) Leaving as soon as possible is the realistic option. You just accept your fate and that you have to pay a fotune to live in a crap flat until your contract runs out. AND to top it all off you need to also accept that you will lose your entire deposit because the landlord will blame you for all the problems. Add on top of that, the landlords tend to be wealthier than you, have access to a lawyer, understand the system better than you and have leverage over you because they own your only shelter. And when you try to find somewhere else to live, the landlord can make your reference a pain unless you play nice with them. The entire rental system protects the interests of landlords, and even when you want to excersise your rights as a tennant, it's costly, difficult and generally more stress and time than it's worth. So bad landlords thrive.
A good tip is to take photographs of everything on the day you move it. Especially worn or 'iffy' areas such as doubtful wiring, carpeting, broken window frames or cracked sinks or toilet bowls things that may need renewed that they may try to blame you for. Then you have comeback.
It’s a real shame that you got a bad landlord, my daughter had a similar experience at her first year at University, we had to travel 150 miles to get it sorted out. He had the habit of just turning up at any time and several times turned up where the girls were taking a shower! Fortunately it was near to the end of their stay, but the Police and the University were informed about the situation. His properties were not included in the recommended properties for students in their second year. We have heard worse but not going to go into that, these people who behave like this are scumbags that don’t deserve customers! Glad to hear that you’re feeling happy where you are now, hope all goes well for your future life 🥰
It's good to hear that you were able to get rid of the angry landlord and his property alongside its issues. Regarding electrical shocks, the landlord should provide reports of the recent checks done on the property. This includes the Electrical Installation Condition Report, Gas Safety Report, and Energy Performance Certificate.
Omg pal, how horrible, sounds like a absolute nightmare! Can't even imagine the amount of stress you guys were under. Glad you're in a better property now, fingers crossed nothing this bad happens to you again! 🤞
Hi, Alanna, that was a very different video but it was very interesting. I can understand how you felt scared and angry at what happened it was totally unacceptable. I hope your new landlord is much better. Anyone who rents should watch this.
Holy crap! That landlord sounds like a psychopath. I'm glad you got out of there in one piece! I've had a landlord like that before in the US and just like in your case, the only thing that forced them to stop behaving like that was getting a lawyer who threatened to claw back rent.
Sounds to me as if either the landlord or a “friend” did the electrics rather than a proper tradesman . A right cowboy. Glad you have moved somewhere better.
Wow, you had a really bad landlord there. To hell with his ex-military background, he was well out of order on many levels. Talking through the situation with others is cathartic, relieving the stress. You went through a lot but you've come through it wiser & more prepared if you ever get into that situation again. Keeping notes, taking pics & everything written down (email is great as everyone has a copy of who said what to whom & when) is great advice. Glad to hear that you're settled & secure in your new "pad" now & you & your partner are getting on with living your lives together. All the best Alanna, keep on keepin' on!
I'm a landlord. I make sure all checks and repairs are done. On the other side of the coin, I'm currently having to go through the courts to evict a tenant who will not leave. It's been 9 months. Nightmare.
As a private renter of about 15 years and 2 different properties I have only had good experiences so far. I have heard the horror stories of course but I have been lucky it seems. What a horrible experience you both have had and I am so happy that you can start to put it behind you now. Also, what a professional you were during all of this. I remember you hinting at things but you hid it so well. Your partner is awesome by the sound of it too. Onwards and upwards.
Always had someone sent around the next day for a leak in the roof; a broken fridge/freezer; boiler not working etc, etc. I have never known what the landlord /landlady looks like. Always got my deposit back. But, I have heard horror stories. Unlucky.
I'm glad you got out of there. I've been pretty lucky when renting and my landlords were generally OK. When I bought a flat though, I had to deal with a housing agency who "ran" the housing estate I lived in and wow, the way people can put money ahead of people's basic need for a home is astonishing
This guy sounds somewhat similar to one of my sister and her partner's landlords. Would often let himself in, demand more rent etc. On the day they finally got out he was literally throwing open and emptying kitchen drawers on to the floor. How bloody awfully stressful this must have been for you both. I hope your current place has much more hospitable landlord/landlady
Oh my goodness! I have rented the same home for 10 years and I can’t say enough about my wonderful landlord! I’m sorry you went through all of that. I think your new home is lovely and wish you both a great experience living there😀
So sorry you had to go through that! That sounds like it was rough, but thank you for giving advice on what you should do when renting, I’m young and naive lol, so I appreciate hearing advice from you! This video was so well made and it was interesting to hear your story! So glad you’re in a better situation now and nice job with the video, it was great!
The first huge red flag, which you should have heeded, was when he informed you to go to him instead of the letting agency for any problems. Hopefully, a life lesson learned.
There is pretty much no difference between letting agency scum and private landlord scum. They are all leeching like bloodsuckers from the most rent they can take.
Why is this lunatic ex Landlord shouting at your partner for somebody else tripping on the steps. How is your partner to blame for someone else's mistake??
I remember how when you were moving you said there was a story to tell, and that you would get to it eventually. This sounds like a living nightmare. Kudos to you and your partner, and thank you for continuing to produce lovely content even though you were horribly stressed out and fearful. I can see why you were test tasting the beers now lol. Thank you for sharing your story, I know it will have been difficult to relive it, but I'm glad you have put it behind you now.
Goodness Alanna, my heart goes out to you. I agree totally that you should always deal with the agent where possible, and that it’s worth the modest cost of a solicitor (lawyer) to advise you. That said, some agents exploit the tenants’ lack of experience and I’ve seen some appalling examples of that. Thank goodness you have a nice new home now.
What a nightmare! Holy cow, it's scary to think about everything you went through. So glad you got out of there and are now in this much better place (the flat AND the circumstance)
Hi Alanna, what a situation to have to go through.i am surprised that you haven’t had a nervous breakdown, especially when the landlord turns to bully boy tactics. You both have my full admiration for sticking to your guns.you have come out of it as stronger people, and then to make a video, hopefully so that other people may learn from you experience..well done to you both.cheers,🇬🇧. Roly
Having watched the video of your dreadful experience as a tenant, I realise I'm so lucky with the arrangement I have. I have rented for many years from an establishment literally right across the road from my house. They always write or email if anything needs to be done to the property, like service the heating boiler, checking the electrical system etc. On the few occasions I have ever needed anything sorted out, then after an email or phonecall it has been rectified as soon as possible. I've never had any representative of the landlord come to do an inspection. So happy for you that you're now able to live peacefully.
That sounds horrendous. I can honestly say, in thirty years of renting, I've never had an experience that bad. For most of that time, I've lived in the North of England. I spent a year in the South, and found it more complicated to rent than in the North, where most of the landlords were small-with no more than a handful of properties-and no letting agency. Also, housing associations are usually better than private landlords, for those with a low income (ie., me). I don't see the private renting situation improving any time soon because many politicians are private landlords, and they will go to any lengths to protect their income and power. 😒
Hi Alanna, that took courage, I was in a similar situation in the early 80's and I blamed myself for pretty much everything, the fear is very real, you doubt yourself and all decisions that you make and have made, it was something that really made me ill and still does to this day, you clearly have a good partner and I know that you will draw strength from one another, bless you both and you both take care always :)
Joking aside, I found this whole thing rather unsettling and I am glad to hear that you are in a more suitable property now. I wish all the very best for the future. ✌️
Your partner must have the patience of a saint. I don't think I'd have held my temper if that landord got in my face, especially if I was just trying to give him a heads up. Anyway Alanna, sounds like you and your partner are in a better place and I'm happy it all turned out well for you both. 👍😉
Holy cow I am a subscriber and I never for one moment thought that you and your partner were going through such absolute hell with your living conditions! You could of been killed 😱. Your previous landlord sounds horrific very very frightening.its crystal clear to me why he kept saying that he was in the army.it was totally to intimidate no ifs or buts about that.he should never ever be allowed to rent homes again.i personally feel he is dangerous! I'm so happy to know that you and your partner are hopefully with a better landlord! Peace and love 💛
I realise that this is some time ago but I have just watched this video. I'm horrified! The landlord is able to deduct the cost of replacing wear-and-tear items from his tax, so, there is no reason why this should be deducted from your deposit. You are 100% right on this. It sounds like you've had a really bad experience with this guy. Sadly, I don't think it's an isolated incident. My son has had similar incidents in HMOs as a university student. I won't go into it, but, landlords seem to be a particular "type" of person whose sole interest is how much money they can make from the tenant. Clearly, this is a generalisation and doesn't apply to ALL landlords but I don't believe it is uncommon
So sorry to hear of your experience, can't believe you were making great content whilst under this amount of stress, I hope your having a better experience now . 👍👍
Oh dear, Alanna. That's a cautionary tale and a half! The moment you divulged that the landlord was ex-military, I knew the type - quite possibly abused, and now sadly taking out that abuse on innocents including the two of you. Thank goodness that all was resolved - the wrong will fail, the right prevail! I realise that although that dreadful experience is now comfortably in the rear view mirror, the impact on you is likely to last. At least you now have the benefit of hindsight! Just remember: you have 125,000+ of us on your side! Hopefully nothing like this will ever happen to you again, and in opening up to us about it, perhaps you may save others from going through it.
@@zapkvr You appear to have misunderstood that Alanna and her partner are in a different property under a different landlord. This perpetrator will not be abusing them again.
@@MS-19 - you're assumption that a person is abusive because they have been abused themselves is misinformed. An awful lot of abusers are predatory and lack empathy and have no moral compass, they haven't been abused at all. Most people who have been abused do not go on to abuse anyone at all, ever. The self serving excuses abusers make all the time is nothing more than cod psychology. And the importance about reporting the abuse to the police and other regulatory authorities is that it protects any future possible renters from becoming victims. I'm interested to hear why you are so forgiving of this abuser and making such offensive excuses for him that condemns abused people everywhere as abusers.
@@mushypeasplease8872 It is indeed a sweeping generalisation on my part, but most of those I have seen convicted of abuse during my own lifetime have suffered abuse at the hands of key figures during their formative years. As you say, there are plenty of other abusers that have nothing of the kind in their history. Nature accounts for some; Nurture accounts for others. I am not seeking to absolve abusers of their crimes. Nor is forgiveness mine to offer; only those they have wronged could do that, and it is entirely up to them whether or not to do so. You are in error to infer or ascribe such desires to me.
@@AdventuresAndNaps I've never had a landlord that bad but have had neighbours so terrible that I went to an extremely dark place. Thank goodness we are both out of those nightmares. I just want a little cottage in the middle of a lot of land!
Sorry to hear about all that. Very glad you are doing better now and hope that the lessons learned serve you well going forward, your new place looks way better at least.
Y'all are just too nice and tolerant. Property renters need to empower themselves with knowledge of the law and best practices for their own protection because there are a lot of unscrupulous landlords out there whose only motivation is to have someone else foot the bill for their ownership and perhaps pocket a few extra quid. It seems you are in a better situation now and I'm glad you've learned some valuable lessons from an untenable experience. (see what I did there?!)
Alanna, I've been watching your videos off and on for 4 years now and they have always unfailingly been hilarious, light hearted, insightful and wonderfully entertaining. To hear that you were both dealing with all this during these times is truly amazing and a great testament to how hard you have worked for your fans as well as your bravery. Fingers crossed neither of you have to deal with any of this again!
I'm sure you could have got the landlord on the lack of electrical inspection (EICR) too. That's definitely a no no! I've heard stories of people who have been mistreated by landlords who don't follow all the rules getting YEARS of rent back! Especially when it comes to the desposit scheme.
Even now, having left the Rachmannesque experience you experienced with your former, seemingly psychopathic landlord, I recommend you send this video to the Better Business Bureau at your former town. This way you will be helping to protect other, maybe somewhat naïve renters from having a similar, dreadful experience. Both the unethical behaviour of the letting agency and the threatening and fundamentally criminally dangerous actions (and inactions) of your landlord should be investigated by both the Bureau and the local council's landlord & tenent regulator. Thx for sharing.
I'm so sorry you and you're boyfriend have suffered this appalling behaviour. I've no idea why anyone one would want to cause you so much upset. You don't come across as ever wanting to cause anyone any trouble and I take you at your word that your partner is just as lovely. I hope sharing this has helped you process at least and you have a lot of happy days in your new home :)
You are lucky to be alive! We lost a family member getting an electric shock from a dishwasher badly connected to the electric supply. What a horrible experience you had, I can imagine the stress you went through, I glad you are happy and safe now.
I’m so sorry to hear that you have had to go through that rubbish situation. I cannot imagine for one minute you being a troublesome tenant. Sounds like he had anger issues!
I can relate to crazy landlord stories! I once had a landlord that disappeared for about 10 months, just weeks after we moved in, as in he was uncontactable for that time. We had some kind of leak in the kitchen that was not discovered until the parquet floor began to warp in places. I sorted the leak to stop it getting worse but the damage to the floor was done. (It turned out to be a seal on the fridge door.) I tried to contact the landlord but to no avail. Anyway, months later my gf and I had decided to decorate the hallway and began stripping wallpaper. That very same day, out of the blue the landlord turns up and goes ballistic at the mess, I mean really loses it, screaming, swearing and threatening us with violence... big guy too, twice my build... he told us we had till the Sunday to get out, it was Wednesday night, and he demanded we sort out the hallway and kitchen, obviously... Next day he turns up at my workplace and just sits outside the car park in his car and then, when I left. he started following.. I worked odd hours and my route to the bus stop home took me through the business park which was totally secluded at that time of evening. I didn't want to be anywhere alone with him so I stopped walking so he could catch up to me while I knew I was still on our building's security camera but he just stopped his car too, keeping distance so I started to approach him and he just drove off... He turned up the next day too after he had called my company's HR department trying to get me sacked... I regularly worked 72hr weeks and swapped between day and night shifts so I was always pretty exhausted.. but I managed to find a house, pack our stuff and decorate the hallway before moving out all in 3 days... A neighbour told us just as we were leaving that she had similar problems with him years before. There was nothing I could do about the kitchen floor though!
"Connected to the mains" is British for basically, "plugged in". The "mains" is the main electricity. An appliance can be plugged in like you would plug in a hair dryer or a lamp, or it can be "hard wired" into the mains, meaning the wirers are tied into the wiring of the house.
From what the electrician was saying I would say the latter was the case, that it was wired directly to the mains. Useful that you do not have to pay for the electricity it uses, but the down side is that it is illegal and you can get arrested.
@@1949corekWhay makes you think they wouldn't pay for the electricity? Electric ovens are often hardwired into the mains (no intervening plug and socket) but the tenant still pays for the electricity.
I think it means it wasn’t on its own circuit. Kitchen appliances use a lot of power and in the UK the voltage of the supply is quite high. So to avoid the risk of shock, large appliances should either have their own circuit individually or sometimes be jointly on a smaller circuit separate from the circuit/s for the rest of the house ( the mains circuit). This means they can have their own circuit breaker to cut in if needed and avoid the risk of electric shock.
Sorry this sound so scary, glad you are now away from them. Landlords like this are so scary there needs to be a register so you can see how good they are before hand.
Wow, that was an unpleasant ride. From things I've heard over the years, a person could have a UA-cam channel devoted to bad landlords. Some don't have a clue about tenants rights and what they can and can't do. I rent from a housing association and they couldn't be nicer, due to my age, they contacted me every so often during the worst of the pandemic to check if I was having any problems.
I am a landlord and could have a yt channel on nightmare tenants it works both ways. There are scum landlords, scum agents and scum tenants just saying.
This was shocking! So sorry for you both. I've had a few issues with Landlords in the past but not on this level. Glad it's all sorted now and you can move on with your lives. Sounds like cheese and crackers time! Pos Cider too.....
WOW! I could really feel the stress you were having to go through with this, even through your smiles. It never surprises me how money greed drives some people. All we all want is a nice peaceful life. On a happier note it sounds like you are up speed on your legal rights. All the best to you both.
I remember your previous video as you were just about to leave your old flat. Very happy to learn it turned out well. It's a quirky but charming residence you presently have. Long may you enjoy it.
The mad landlord's questioning was another mind game trick, there was no obligation to explain yourselves, his query about how to assist the next tenant was a trick question..
We've had issues renting in the past but nothing like this! Well done for negotiating the return of your deposit. Actually thinking about it our previous landlord (we bought the house off our last one) was going to sue us, but never did. We paid them half the debt they claimed we owed but they never responded. I hope this video helps you to come to terms with the experience. Like Adam Clark said your partner sounds awesome I think I might be having a bit of a man crush already!
Hi Alanna. I am a Landlord myself, and this story really resonated with me. Be assured that the vast majority are nothing like this guy - who sounds like he has Mental problems. There will always be predatory people who will take advantage of decent, nice people; it has happened to me in the past. I hope you and your partner who sounds lovely, have gotten some resolution. It's a cliche, but "what doesn't kill, you makes you stronger" - seems very apt in this case. Your inner beauty still shines strong. Now get back to drinking and eating 😉🤗
A truly awful ordeal to have to live through, can't imagine the underlying stress it caused. So pleased for you finding a new home. Did you get to take the Ring doorbell with you?
Oh my goodness, Alanna❤❤❤ What a horrible learning experience!!! You paid an awful price in fear, injury and diiscomfort in your own home but you're clearly much, much wiser and more capable now.. And you didn't just slink away and sweep all this difficuty and trauma under the carpet. So good for you, if anyone tries to take advantage of you from now on, you're a warrior more than fot for battle!!! I'm so glad you weren't killed by the dishwasher or by a fall on the insecurely lined steps. Or by that menacing creep of a landlord!! What an ordeal. All your viewers will benefit from the lessons learned in this epiisode. I'm sure have helped many others today.
Well done Alanna, you weathered the storm. Property landlords are very often spivs without conscience but you stood your ground well in this case because you knew your rights and/or you received good advice.
Alanna,my heart goes out to you,I hope you have a much better time at your new place and I hope this does not stop you making content ,I do like listening to your adventures . All my love fr om dundee
Wow, I feel so bad for you. I feel like I should apologize when I had nothing to do with it. No one should have to deal with that kind of bullying. I hope you never have to go through anything like that again.
I sympathise Alanna! I had no hot water for 6 months during the pandemic - cold baths only, but thankfully in spring/summer! So glad you & the 'Butler' are away from all this stress, & have learned new life lessons. Enjoy a relaxing new home with favourite treats! 'Butler' sounds like a great guy, you deserve each other!
My first rental property had a Landlady that used to let herself in, never felt threatened by her but it was awful. Our second Landlord was absolutely superb.
I am sorry this happened to you. You could even report this landlord for his behaviour. It is unacceptable. Thank you for sharing. I am glad you are loving the new place even more.
My goddaughter was having trouble over her deposit and it was stressing her. After a conversation we decided seeing her uncle was close at hand he should go with her. She went to the agency which was owned by the landlord with her uncle, he waited outside. The landlord shouted at her and her uncle went in - as a 6'2" ex rugby player he doesn't get shouted at much. After a short discussion where the landlord still refused the deposit he handed him his card which had the name of a medium sized Edinburgh law firm. His name, QC and partner. Then there was a letter before action giving him 7 days. She had the cheque before she left.
Hi Alanna, so sorry that I haven't visited your channel for awhile and after viewing this video, I feel somewhat guilty. That flat sounds like it was jinxed!!! Wow!! All those things going wrong. You were very fortunate that were okay after receiving that electric shock. My dad told me years ago that he accidentally toughed a faulty electrical item and the shock threw him right across the room. Love the way how you have split the video into three parts, we even experienced commercial breaks here, between the parts. With all the things you went through, I think if that was to be made as a motion picture, it would go really well at the box office. The scariest thing was that it is all real life and it is so good to know that you both got through it all okay. Wishing you the very best. Robert.
I’m really sorry that you went through such a terrible time, I am very glad that you were not alone and that you were both intelligent enough to be able to fight for your rights and I wish I could have been there when someone had to tell him you were threatening him with legal action. I genuinely respect and am thankful for the people who serve our country in the military but have never come across anyone who used it to bully others. I find it hard to believe that a bully would be popular in any branch of the military. Thank you for sharing your experience as it may spare someone else from suffering as you did. Thank you for making the video even though it must have taken you some time to do such a long video. I hope both You and the Butler are much happier in your new home and that you have a great week
I'm so sorry to hear of your experiences! But you can absolutely put a positive spin on it and realise that you have learned a great deal, and in future you will be much better prepared to deal with situations if they arise. I don't think you should be thanking the landlord (obviously) but you can definitely be grateful to have come out the other side as a much stronger and more capable person! Thanks for sharing your story 🙏
You had a rough time there! I'm glad you seem to be having a better time at your current flat. You give good advice for anyone new to renting. When my sister moved away to study and rented several properties, she unfortunately had bad experiences with the majority of them. I feel thankful I've never had to rent and deal with landlords and letting agents.
Sorry you went through all that it’s so good for other people renting that you shared this. As there are some real rouges out there!God bless from Ralph &sheila
I'm so happy for you both that you called them on their BS! Thank you. Enjoy your new flat! I would love for you to do a short vid on a tour of your new place. Will you?
Wonderful video! Really good to know for young people to know. My own private landlords, when I was young, were the nicest people imaginable. Lucky me :-)
Blimey, Alanna! Very sorry to hear you and your partner went through all that. Sounds stressful and scary as hell. Gobsmacked. Hope that your current situation is much better.
Sounds like a shocking experience 😉 I once rented a place that had toadstools growing in the bathroom, my foot went through the kitchen floor etc had to threaten the landlord with environmental health dept before he did anything.
You have done well to put a positive spin on your problems with your last landlord and it must have been hell, I hope your letting agent is a good one now and you don’t get the land lord coming round.
Allana, I'm so sorry that this happened to you & your partner. I remember how stressed you were during your move & no wonder! These are hard lessons that kind & decent people unfortunately learn. I am proud of the way you handled it & that you eventually found your voice. I applaud you for using your platform to warn us about the predators out there & how to handle them. These evil people are why the world is in the bleak state that it is. The rest of us have to wake up & stop them!
I was appalled by your unacceptable experiences. Like you guys, I’m not at all au fait with renting laws and potential catastrophes. I am extremely grateful that you chose to broadcast your story, and so programme me, what to expect. One thing. You “talked to people”. Very good. Apart from Google, there is the CITIZEN’S ADVICE BUREAU (free); and reminders to ourselves…. FRIENDLY SOLICITORS. You were both right to be calm and polite. You might consider having a recorder switched on, too, whenever you have any official verbal intercourse with suppliers or providers. Best of luck to you, and treat it as a steep learning curve!
Wow! What a story. Glad you got through it in the end. I can see how upsetting this was. In my student days, there were some incredible stories of houses unfit for habitation, legal battles, etc. One episode concerned a member of the Student Union Executive Committee and the story was serialised in the weekly college newspaper - might even have made it into regional press. The landlord had several properties let to students and the case eventually went to court (after most of an academic year...). I think the landlord ended up being prosecuted afterwards because this one house was indescribably awful (no heating, dodgy electrics, leaky pipes, serious mould and rot, floorboards broken, holes in the roof, tenants getting ill and/or injured, you name it... AND the landlord was abusive and routinely held on to deposits). The prosecution might well have been the point at which it made the public media. This was the early '90s but might as well have been the 1790s from the conditions.
So glad you both were successful in getting your new home in time, and ditched the very dodgy landlord from hell, then had the guts to do all the right things to avoid the follow up scam. I remember watching at the time, you giving a limited version of your cautionary tale, with less detail pending possible proceedings, beyond a broad "renter beware", presentation. Must have been seriously hard to keep it objective and keep it together making it given the types of issues and implied "ex-miliatary with a key", stuff. Glad for you, its done with and you're somewhere far better, and extra marks for sharing the saga to inform others in similar circumstances, or help avoid them. As a hopeful cheering footnote, my first manager who openly admitted he thought a key part of his role was trying to find reasons to fire people, and kept referring to being an ex-para (paratrooper ie badass), except we found out he was actually in the catering corps for the Terratorial Army... a nasty little bully, but rather sad and laughable ultimately, who accumulated enough black marks for questionable methods, didn't get his contract renewed with implied prejudice. Perhaps his former services to bad tea and lumpy potatoes potatoes helped his later career, but.... 😊 🥂
Wow! What a situation you were in. From your UA-cam videos from that time I would never have guessed all that was going on as you were charming as ever. Glad you're in such a better situation now so you can be relatively stress-free. I'm always rooting for you as you always present yourself as a good-hearted person (and quite funny too). As always, wishing you the best.
So sorry Alanna - that’s an absolutely horrible experience! Although most of my landlords have been fine, unfortunately, I’ve had one similarly bad landlord, and lost part of my deposit. In the insanely competitive rental sector of London, it’s a seller’s market, and landlords have the upper hand. Sadly, UK law does too little to protect tenants and allows the bad landlords to get away with horrific behaviour. Glad you’re in a much better place now!
Well worth sharing that video, Alanna. What a nightmare you went through (you could've been killed by that electric shock. Glad you're both safe and well outta there! I hope sharing your experience (and your subsequent advice) will help others in a similar situation. Well done and take care, kiddo. X
@@AdventuresAndNaps A couple of years ago during lockdown, we were all feeling depressed and miserable and that's when I stumbled on to your channel. It's been like a breath of fresh air. Keep it up, Alanna. (I reckon you'd be a natural in TV presenting.)
Hi Alanna, what a terrible experience you had. I know there are some unscrupulous landlords out there but that guy sounds crazy. Glad you got out and hopefully your new landlord is a nice person ❤️
Really sorry to hear of your experiences with the Landlord etc. Makes my blood boil when I hear of nasty aholes like that! Hope all is ok for you now? 😊
That Landlord had NEVER been in the Military either, no GENUINE former Squaddie brags about their service! Complete bollocks! What a scumbag, he was clearly using this as a veiled threat. Hopefully one day he uses that bollocks threat to a genuine former soldier who will be far from happy with his fake soldier cobblers. Real former soldiers ALWAYS know a fellow soldier.
Letting companies are the absolute dregs they con owners and tenants in every way they can.
Same here, many landlords are utter morons
As an owner of rental properties I cannot imagine behaving the way this landlord has done. The rental agency has also behaved in an unscrupulous manner as well. So glad you are not under those organizations now. Lesson: Deal only with the leasing agency for communications and copy the landlord.
Hi pal you’re still bad
my landlord is lovely, her husband died a few months ago, we cook food for each other, I was a chef for 3 decades, she can cook. It's so nice to have a meal prepared for you after a long day at work in hospital theatres! Typically 10 hours on my feet"
My landlord is great. Lucky me
Alanna - you and your partner should have done the following 6 things:
1) Inform the letting agent of ALL these problems straight away as one happened. That's what letting agents are there for.
2) Informed the local council of all these issues.
3) Employed a solicitor to write letters to the landlord *from the outset of these problems* to advise him of his legal responsibilities and your legal rights.
4) Found another place to live PDQ
5) If needs be put the whole matter in the hands of your solicitor.
You've outlined good points there. Ive noted a few I would have done sometimes back.
Thank you Stephen! I really appreciate that
Holy crap! That landlord sounds like a psychopath. I'm glad you got out of there in one piece! I've had a landlord like that before in the US and just like in your case, the only thing that forced them to stop behaving like that was getting a lawyer who threatened to claw back rent.
Ahhh sorry you had a crappy one, too!! Hope you're in a better place now!
If I were you I'd take the landlord and the letting agency to court for the stress you went through. Makes me feel like giving you guys a big hug.
Lawyers fees 😪😓
Sounds to me as if either the landlord or a “friend” did the electrics rather than a proper tradesman . A right cowboy. Glad you have moved somewhere better.
That's the first thing that crossed my mind.
Most modern external doors have Euro cylinder locks, can be purchased for under £10 and changed in 2 minutes with just a screwdriver.
I'm a landlord. I make sure all checks and repairs are done.
On the other side of the coin, I'm currently having to go through the courts to evict a tenant who will not leave. It's been 9 months. Nightmare.
There's good and bad on all sides in this industry. At 60 I've experienced both.
Thanks so much pal! Really appreciate it
Always had someone sent around the next day for a leak in the roof; a broken fridge/freezer; boiler not working etc, etc.
I appreciate it Shane!
Oh my goodness, that sounds horrible! Hope they're in a better place now.
@@AdventuresAndNaps Thanks, happy to say they are :)
Oh my goodness! I have rented the same home for 10 years and I can’t say enough about my wonderful landlord! I’m sorry you went through all of that. I think your new home is lovely and wish you both a great experience living there😀
Thank you!! SO much safer and happier now!
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it
@@AdventuresAndNaps You're welcome, Alanna! Hope you had a nice cup of Yorkshire after uploading this :)
Wow, rough stuff, can relate tho . A while ago I was renting a flat in Torquay and once woke up to find my landlord in my bedroom standing over me!
Oh my goddd!!
OMG!!!!
Thank you!! Thankfully we're much safer now.
What a nightmare! Holy cow, it's scary to think about everything you went through. So glad you got out of there and are now in this much better place (the flat AND the circumstance)
Thank you!!!!
Roly
Sorry you had to go through this. Speaking as a landlord, I would never treat my tenant in such a horrible way.
🙏🏻
Your partner must have the patience of a saint. I don't think I'd have held my temper if that landord got in my face, especially if I was just trying to give him a heads up.
Anyway Alanna, sounds like you and your partner are in a better place and I'm happy it all turned out well for you both. 👍😉
Thank you!!!
So sorry you had to go through that! What a terrible landlord experience! Wishing you lots of happiness in your new home.
Thank you so much!
Thank you!!
Rubbish. The perp will go on to do it again if he isn't stopped. I would sue him into the poor house. The hell with letting god sort it
@@zapkvr You appear to have misunderstood that Alanna and her partner are in a different property under a different landlord.
I'm so sorry you both had to experience that awful nightmare.
Thank you!
@@AdventuresAndNaps I've never had a landlord that bad but have had neighbours so terrible that I went to an extremely dark place. Thank goodness we are both out of those nightmares. I just want a little cottage in the middle of a lot of land!
so sorry that you and your partner had to go through all of that :( i’m glad that you have both found a better place now :)
Thank you so much!
Thank you!!!
Yes that's a great idea your totally right !
Alanna
What a story.
I'm glad your OK now.
Your living proof that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
Thank you!!
Sorry this sound so scary, glad you are now away from them. Landlords like this are so scary there needs to be a register so you can see how good they are before hand.
🙏🏻
Completely agree re an online database, kind of like 'Rate My Professor' etc!! 🤔
Yes, there are so many background checks required for people who rent, but not for landlords!!
I agree with a register for landlords in a similar vein to TripAdvisor that would sort the wheat from the chaf from a long standing landlord.
Thank you!! That sounds wonderful, there's good people out there!
Thank you!! Thankfully things are so much better now!!
There's some great advice in this video. Glad your new place is all good. I think it's more common than many would believe.
Thank you! Hopefully it can help others!
WOW! I could really feel the stress you were having to go through with this, even through your smiles. It never surprises me how money greed drives some people. All we all want is a nice peaceful life. On a happier note it sounds like you are up speed on your legal rights. All the best to you both.
Thank you!!
Hi Alanna. I feel so sorry you had such a bad time.
I really hope your current landlord and letting agent are more decent people.
Thank you! We're much safer now!
All landlords are predatory
A truly awful ordeal to have to live through, can't imagine the underlying stress it caused. So pleased for you finding a new home. Did you get to take the Ring doorbell with you?
We did!!
Thank you so much!!
This is actually pretty educational. I've learned a few things I hadn't known before.
Supportive and friendly comment - as usual - and I remember this episode from back when it happened. Glad the "military Caspar" is history now :)
🙏🏻
I'm glad that it all worked out well for you and the butler in the end ! Thanks !
Me, too!!
6 months 😮 That's so long! But thank you so much!
My first rental property had a Landlady that used to let herself in, never felt threatened by her but it was awful. Our second Landlord was absolutely superb.
this is so horrific, oh my god!!!! i'm so glad you are out and safer and happier! this is definitely one of the worst renting stories i've ever heard!
Thanks for watching!
I am sorry this happened to you. You could even report this landlord for his behaviour. It is unacceptable.
Thank you for sharing. I am glad you are loving the new place even more.
Thank you!!
What a horrible experience for her!! That would be so scary. Glad she had some support, that stuff makes me so angry!
Thank you so much!! Thankfully we're much safer here and very happy!
Well .. after reading all the comments and taking notes after watching the video, thank you very much for sharing ths.
Thank you!!
Thank you!!
Thanks for the thorough explanation of your rental nightmare.
Will you?
Someday soon!
@@AdventuresAndNaps Great! Looking fwd to it. :)
Thank you! SO much better now, thankfully!!
Sounds like a shocking experience 😉 I once rented a place that had toadstools growing in the bathroom, my foot went through the kitchen floor etc had to threaten the landlord with environmental health dept before he did anything.
Sounds like an awfully stressful time. And as you say, you learned from the experience. That which does not destroy you makes you stronger.
Your personality is an absolute delight my lovely much love from us 🏴💙👌
🥂
Thank you!!
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it
@@AdventuresAndNaps A couple of years ago during lockdown, we were all feeling depressed and miserable and that's when I stumbled on to your channel. It's been like a breath of fresh air. Keep it up, Alanna. (I reckon you'd be a natural in TV presenting.)
So very sorry for your terrible experience 🇬🇧
Hi Alanna, what a terrible experience you had. I know there are some unscrupulous landlords out there but that guy sounds crazy. Glad you got out and hopefully your new landlord is a nice person ❤️
Thank you!!
Re: dishwasher at 240volts - that's why UK bathrooms have a cord switch or an external switch
Really sorry to hear of your experiences with the Landlord etc. Makes my blood boil when I hear of nasty aholes like that! Hope all is ok for you now? 😊
Thank you! We're much happier now!
I might have missed it, but hope you took the doorbell
We sure did 😂
