Can someone please give Salba his own UA-cam skateboard history series? The way he talks about skate history you can tell he’s so passionate. The knowledge of skateboarding roots needs to be released, before the 70s/early 80s skaters are gone. And I know he’s the right guy to tell it.
I want to thank Santa Cruz for keeping the older gents on the team just as irrelevant as the younger riders.... And having Dressen part of this was icing on the cake.... Skateboarding is the sh#t... period....
It’s got to be weird to be skating your own secret paradise long enough to accept the fact that it’s one of the 7 wonders of skateboarding and agreeing to this interview. Salba’s a legend 🔥❤🔥
Secret spot every local knows about this spot it's the party hang out they probably didn't show you them sweeping the glass and all the trash left behind by the partiers they break their beer bottles all over the place but they never seem to leave a roach for me to smoke
Been to Baldy twice in the late 80s after Pipeline closed. It's a great adventure...more so back then. No interwebs to tell you how to get there. Salba is a class act and knows the history. Respect!
So cool to see the older generation still psyched about skating. Salba doing his yoga super flexible, you gotta keep fit to skate at that level and age.
Remember growing up to all the mags with the legends that rode here, dreaming to do it myself. Thanks for bringing us along and always great to still see Salba, Eric and the crew doing well!
Being 62-1/2 now , and seeing this today, sure brings back memories of my Buddy’s & I seeking out new skate spots back in mid 70’s & early 80’s. I was fortunate enough to have ridden at Baldy , the Fruit bowl ( the sanitarium pool) the Soul bowl ( San Diego State College) The Nude bowl ( out in Palm Springs area) The “ L “ pool ( it was just Gnarly back then ) and All kinds of other legendary spots all over Southern California. My Dream back then was to skate the Desert pipes over in Phoenix area ,but that trip unfortunately never happened for a number of reasons. So glad to see Steve & Eric still tearing it up out & about these days , and props To Santa Cruz !! 👍. Thanks guys.
My prime time was the 90’s. Some dudes, it was the 70’s, 80’s, 2000’s, now. It doesn’t matter. Skaters have a bond across generations. I love seeing old & young ppl skating together. It’s a beautiful thing.
Brings back a lot of memories. We were from San Pedro, drove up to skate all the Upland spots before the park was built, with Schneider, Cassimus and others. Awesome video!
Been here many at times jump the pit many of times, this was late 90s early 2000s. Also used to bomb the the the ditch, one day some dude was painting the cover of the band free. Underneath one of the overpasses down before you get to the Grate.
Love the old-school....when I was a kid it was skating and skating punk rock and weed now I'm in my 50s what a fun time never in my wildness dreams I was going to live to 50 lol .watching this videos bring me back to a raw time ..thanks salsa and to all to the old skool goods .....
Nice great bit of skateboarding history, I totally get peoples connection with spots like this , it always feels quite spiritual going back to old Street spots especially when there tucked out the way, theirs a real presence of peace there👍🤜🙏🙏much love from the UK 🙏💯🤜👍💥
Was up at the pipe one day in like 97. Salba and a few others pulled up. One dude was on roller skates and i swear to you he got 90% to the top of the pipe. Was insane
Is that the one that Rick Blackhart and them were trying to drive a truck up? Check out the Loveletters to Skateboarding full pipe episode, pretty sure Salba talks about and Texas. Cheers
Salba is a legend! I remember skating Pipeline and seeing Salba with the same cheetah skin knee pads blowing snot rockets right as he'd drop into the Combi. Aggressive carves looking like the Green Goblin on a board.
So cool hearing history of baldy I live near baldy pipe but we take a different way to get there so we don’t have to hop the fence and worry about the neighbors
Used to have my bedroom walls back then with mad pipeline photos ripped out from Transworld skating and Thrasher zines...good lord I miss this stuff. So glad I was part of that era.'86-'2001.♥️🤖📼🔌⚡
Damn i am old, and so is salba, and he's older than me. Met him many many moons ago at a Social D show at the Palladium, or was it a Beastie Boys gig? Memory going bye bye. Cool dude, seen him skate in person a few times in the local so cal scene at different places. Respecto sir!!
@@SantaCruzSkateboards dropping in on that bank on the one side of the pit is gnarly!! But we were at Ammo a week before and then hit up The Glory Hole. We should have went to Pipa Grande but only had vague directions. #2002 was an awesome time and coming back to Philly after the trip really was a bummer with senior year 2 weeks after getting home. But Baldy was so much more chill than Ammo.
Skated Baldy for the first time in the late 89- Walking up to it was like when you see your child born!!! Like WOW! The feeling you get. Oh and the jump over the pit when I was young that was a leap of faith. I really need to take my two boys to experience it. Maybe a chance to run into Steve- Thank you brother for showing us young F@ckers how its done! Salbaland!! Much love from Riverside
How great to see all the pipe finally. It is the holiest of the holy. I went there last October just to see it. DIdn't chance going down to it since I'm 57 and didn't want to get hurt and being stuck there all alone
Can't remember how many SC decks I went through but they were my fave back in the heydays and mad shout out to Dressen and Salba from gnarly Philly!!🤖📼🔌⚡
Whata legend.. love me some SALBA.. quick story, i used to see salba all around the badlands spraypainting "salba sucks" on everything he could lol. Good dude.
Imagine if it is resurfaced with Pebble Crete.the legendary articles in Skateboarding Magazine/Thrasher from the late seventies and early eighties I remember about this spot.
Aaaaaah, the memories flowing back from the tapes I watched back in the 80s and 90s with this spot in them, wishing I could go there (which, living in Norway was not gonna happen anytime soon). Thanks for bringing back those memories SC :)
Dropped my board jumping the over pit in 88'...1st time sk8ed about 15 mins...the old bastard came down to the park entry w/ sheriff in tow...Best of times at 16🍻
Cool to see now. I was super young back then but we use to live on 25th and my Aunt off 24th. I remember this(Baldy) and the Pipeline being a big deal in the early 80's💯
I'm 35 and grew up in Upland. I knew exactly where you were during your drive to the entrance. Looks like you went in from the East? Great video. Yeah, that guy with the junk yard at the end of the street is always angry.... Lol. Edit I just checked Google Maps and it looks like he cleaned up the property...
There has been a lot of urethane laid down all over Mount Baldy, including the top near the ski lifts all the way down through GMR and the dam. Very cool story

Yes! 🙂👍🏻
He’s always posting on IG and has 2 grosso loveletters (fullpipes, badlands)
SALBA RULES!!!!!!
He would definitely be a good replacement for Grosso on the Love letters series
Ok, I will be that someone. 😁

Lester. Radical. Knarly w/a K.
@@erichanhauser3190We used to get Knarley on Acid while skating parking garages in Dallas with a K 🤘🤠🤘
The stickers at the end blew my mind

thank you SC and Salba for the history, and everything! ❤️ skateboarding!

This was a really good piece. I love learning shit that was before my time and this is pretty much the beginning of skateboarding’s soul.

Salba should have his own podcast and interview only old school skaters, a lot of us older skaters would watch for sure.
We would love watching that as well! Check out Salba's Nine Club for some great conversation 🙌
I was gonna say thats the Nine Club

There is s pipe like this in Texas. Seen a Video that Jeff Newton did in the late 80s. Alot like Mt Baldie.🤘🤠🤘

Cool video
So rad! got to skate there in 1989. It was part of our tour after camping at the Nude bowl.
Rad! Love hearing about the history from Salba
Sabla , Malba has been posting pics of him skating there lately. Would be rad AF to get a session there now!! 🔥💯🙌🙌👍
Love that perspective of the skating from in the pipe. That’s how it feels waiting for your run people! Haha

This vid is a treasure. Loved it!
Thanks so much!
Awesome watch ! Liked all the rad stuff that Steve here had to share. A lot to take away from.
Salba is crazy legendary so cool
The history....the ACID....the syncretic "reality" of the rolling stone issue with GD in the cover!! What a fuckin TRIP!
Salba & Dressen? Epic. Dressen reminds me of an old friend. Same build, same laugh. Could be brothers. Concussion on acid does not sound good. Krap!
This was tight!
This was dope to watch
Salba would be the coolest dad on the planet 🤣
I have that rolling stone mag somewhere. So great to see skating in a mainstream mag at the time.
Grateful dead on the cover man. Touch of grey. Roll on, rock out.
To me Salba is definition of skating!!! Stay gnarly!
That was pretty awesome💚🇬🇧🌱
Can't wait

Santa Cruz for life 🇺🇸 God bless wally, Mike weed
EPIC work on this one Guys !!!
DEFINITION SICK
That pit is gnarly, a bmxer rolled in on the bank on the one side of the pit. Pretty wild. I'm stoked to have rode Baldy.
Sounds heavy!!

We can all agree there!!!
How cool coming back to this after decades!!
The only Skate Spot i ever really Dreamed of skating was Love Park. a dream it will remain
This was fantastic!!!
Absolutely! Salba, Dressen & the SC.
Thank you Santa Cruz and Salba. EPIC skateboarding history and EPIC spot! I skated it once in August 1990. RESPECT

87-88 were some great skate years for me..I think the alba thrasher ad i remember was "buy our boards..we need the money"..good times!
An excellent piece of history direct from the history maker.. props to Salba
I want Dressen's board. Maybe some 95a Slime Balls, bright green.
Bucket list to be checked off this month when I fly back to cali !
Im there every other weekend!
Riding dwn the dam on a long board is the best high you can experience
Cool to see now. I was super young back then but we use to live on 25th and my Aunt off 24th. I remember this(Baldy) and the Pipeline being a big deal in the early 80's💯
We need more of alba please haha this dudes stoke is reaching me from behind the screen
Good to hear og homie voice, stuck in FL for 5 years
I hate and love Salba all at once. Balls of steel and story telling master.
Sick
Yessssss. I'm an 80's kid, so this is extra bad azzzz to me
Historical information! Thank you.
Cool history!! I soo waiting for someone to Ollie the jump gap 😅
Mike V did
Many tricks have been done over that gap.
Ya Sallie! kill n it!
Stoked I got to skate NorCal's Bombora in '77 and Baldy in '87 and '88. Roots.
Badass.
Salba is ritualistic when he talks about this spot. It's not a spot it's a religious experience.
Guy has a huge ego and wants everything he did to be legendary
So rad 🔥💯 Salba has such a presence and a voice. I would have to make that jump 😂💪🏼
Steve Alba gnarly as f##k 🤙🏽
1000%!
Awesome to see this
A Alba was my first board
