Yep Tony is right. I want to be him when i grow up _ a Bowl rippin, guitar shreddin, has aged like a movie star during the age Hollywood was all glitz and when movies were not all special effects/ CGI.... Salba is everything thats rad about skateboarding. Is was there to plant the seeds....
The history of skateboarding is so sacred. Not everyone needs to be a connoisseur of skateboarding history, but everyone needs to know at least the basics. It's like...here we are in 2023 on our skateboards. Maybe you're at a skatepark, a curb, a parking lot, or your drive way. There is an endless amounts of dudes who are responsible for where you are right now; Salba being one of those guys. You need to appreciate and understand why you are on a skateboard today.
I just turned 55 and while I rode some skateboards in the 70's, it wasn't until 1983 that I officially became a skater, so 40 years. That Salba has 50 under his belt is a massive accomplishment and inspiring to us all. Bill Dohr made a huge impression on me as well, keep ripping Salba!
Salba intimidated me and my friends when we made that trip from Torrance to Upland. The Alba's, Olsen, Duane and Chris Miller would be there. We would just watch.
58 years old today. Still skating. Growing up in this particular age of skateboarding was special. The magazines dictated the pace of knowledge, culture and progression. Always good to see the history being shown.
That's awesome , I'm 52 still skating but can't do what I use to do body won't let me but my mind says I can . I tried a half pipe recently and I'm a kook , very bad decision
Legend. I’ll be 60 in Nov. Fondly remember LIVING to skate in the early 70’s and the coming decades. Salba, DogTown and skate life it’s influenced my attitude,my life ever since. I haven’t skated in quite awhile, but I’ll always consider myself a skater.
Salba eats gnar gnar cake for breakfast!!!. Absolute killer Dad, Skater, Artist🔥🔥🔥 Mad respect to him and all he has done for us all world wide.. Thanks to Santa Cruz for getting this together! So Rad👊
The is a stenciled Salba on my wall with a message from him and there is always one setup ready to ride. His passion is contagious. I started skating at 41 amd now 46 i know on still have a lifetime of skateboarding ahead of me.
I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa in the 80’s and Salba was one of my inspirations. Great to see him still rocking and rolling out! A true legend of skateboarding. Thank you Salba
Found a pool in 1988, skated it, spray painted my name in it, in 2008 I opened a TWS and found a Salba photo from that pool. It's framed and on the wall at home today
89-90 @ the haunted hole in san juan capo, SAlba told me to "loosen them trucks, you want to float around this pool like water". Fun times with Alva, Duncan, White brothers & both Albas at that spot.
Just watched it and as a kid who was born in corona CA, in 1986, started skating 1990- 2004, this hits home! I’m still in Southern California! It’s got a special place in my heart like it does for Steve! Keep shredding my dude!
this was perfect.. salba is our father..he is santa cruz..tony hawk wants to be him when he gets older.. this is inspiring to me and ive been skateboarding for 23 years(im 35 know)..
Really wish i grew up in that kind of scene. Albas a renaissance man and seeing him at his age makes me realize its not a bad thing. Creativity, realism, and kindness... Way to go SAlba. Youre a hero and inspiration for us aging GenXrs.
I grew up watching him on the pages of skateboarder magazine in the 70’s. I’m the same age and I could never have imagined back then him still in the limelight ripping (nor myself skating ditches now for that matter😅)
Steve you inspired a kid way back then frrom the East coast when the mags were first making it out here and while we had nothing to skate like out there, we made it happen on anything we could. It is awesome to see where skating has gone to. Transitionss all around us now. And stoked to see you well and still rolling! Thanks brother.
Began skating in ‘87 and until recently, took 6 years off. I just set up a Winkowski and after watching this, I know I made the right choice. Huge props to all these pros I grew up admiring, who still throw down the urethane,
Man this was so damned inspiring. I love his perspective about not really being concerned with learning new tricks as much as just doing tricks you know on new spots. That something I just realized I relate to very much. I aspire to be like him except I’ll still be seeking out new street spots and curbs and shit when I’m 60
Salba is a true Zen master. I met him at Kona back in 2017. He was one of the most genuine and gracious people I have ever encountered. I am also a proud owner of one of his hand stenciled skateboard decks (which I hang in my recording studio at home). His relentless passion for skateboarding and specifically pool riding is unmatched. So grateful that he still skates and is happy to do interviews like this. Aside from being rad AF, he has an attitude that's good for life. Sound wisdom from Salba always.
I started skating in the mid 80's. We didn't have access to TV, videos or magazines etc where I was. A few kids moved to my little town from LA and brought stories. Their parents worked in the Valley, or SBC or whatever and they were the lifeline to the scene. It was like oral history. There were no pools and very few parking lots but we did what we could with what we had. Eventually a couple families built half pipes so we had two places to try transition. I heard about Alva, TH, Natas, Mag from these dudes and just stayed stoked. My first board was a Sims with Kryptonics wheels and gullwing trucks. I skated those trucks for several years, but changed boards a bunch. Today my daily is a Salba Tiger VX. I'm glad I got it when I did. I'm so glad I saw this. So many great memories!
Steve is awesome I once saw him at Louisville skatepark in 2008 he had spitfire bighead wheels and him just doing KICKTURNS in the full pipe was cooler than ANY other skater there skating he was going SO high and so fast front side thruster style kickturns at like 14-15 feet non stop for like 15 minutes lololol shit was gnarly guy is awesome
25:45 you may not have cried but I freaking did. You are so right dude! I’m a stay at home skater dad and this just made my day perhaps even week. Thank you @SantaCruz for such amazing content.
Took a trip from Norway to Upland summer of 1986. Made a lot of friends at the park. We showed Salba a pool we found at an aboundoned house in Clairmont. He absolutly destoyed it. My regret is not stying in touch with those I met back then. Sorry...
Legendary Salba! Awesome to watch, hopefully there’s a part 2 of this a little longer with other OG commentaries from dudes like Duane Peters,Tony Alva, Steve Olson, Eddie Elguera, Stacy Peralta, Hosoi, the list goes on & on…
This was not only amazing but heart felt, my life in a nutshell!! (by no means am I comparing my skills to S.Alba) Skateboarding is absolutely everything to me. I too can not imagine life without hearing the Skrrrrrrtt! beneath my feet. This toy has been and will always be, the absolute best part of my life, until the wheels fall off. I talk to my wife all the time about how I do not understand the world without skateboarding. I am literally scared and do not know how to even fathom life without a skateboard beneath my feet. Truly inspired by Steve and appreciate you sharing this insight on his life. Skateboarding and Santa Cruz for life!
Here’s my Salba story. As a teenage skate punk in Northern California in the 80’s, I guess he wasn’t so cool because I needed a new deck and his was marked way down and super cheap. Maybe it was an old model. I bought it and planned on painting because I guess I didn’t think he was cool. Don’t remember. So I’m 15 with rattle can of black paint and an off duty cop tackles me, roughs me up and arrests me for having a spray can as a minor. He even fabricated a charge of graffiti. So Salba is responsible for my misdemeanor record as a minor. Thanks a lot.
One of the highlights of my years skating was ripping around a bowl in Seattle with Salba, Caballero, Mountain, Hosoi and Hassan. I am a street skater, but had to admire and respect these guys for their contribution, longevity, and pure love for skateboarding.
This is so crazy being from upland and seeing salba around at different skateparks but not knowing the history behind where i grew up and him. It is true that street skating changed the game and kinda put this history in the background. It's also crazy, I grew up skating upland skatepark and playing guitar when I was 11-12. The spirit was in the air. Hope to meet this legend again one day.
Steve Alba in two tone creepers! He has my respect. Started at the same time. 62 now. Lived the same history, but alot through these guys. So Cal was where it was at. Saskatoon Saskatchewan with 40 below winters just kinda shut us out. Respect Senor Alba.
Growing up in the 70s and watching these guys and reading skateboarder magazine, these guys were all my idols. I looked up to everyone of them. Even Jay Adams.
What would i do to go hang with Salba - in his garage. So many stories and in my mind artifacts.. I would bring a 12 pack of beers and let this legend talk the day away..... one of my all time favorites.....
You don’t need the artificial joy🍻.. I was thinking the same thing, how great it would be to kick it with him in his garage and have them show you all of his memorabilia
Salute one of the best things in the development of technology was to get to see all the old footage of the Salba's skate .I was only able to see pictures when it was huge and I was young . stay strong ,never stop..legend
Thank you Steve you were one of the one's I would follow. I'm 66 now with neophrophy in my legs and feet so can't skate anymore. God bless you and family and keep on keeping on.Bill.
Super awesome movie. I met Steve when he was 16 and we've been friends ever since. I stayed at his house at the Upland Amateur contest, there were like 17 boys staying over. His mom put me in my own room and said you don't need to stay in here with those stinky boys. Fun memories. We are still skating in our 60's.
I’m still not clear on something, did they just go to a pool, which they knew in advance was empty, and just hope the house was abandoned, or the owners on vacation for… the entire year? How did they avoid _“Excuse me, what are you boys doing in my pool?!?”_
Great video, I grew up in Upland skating in the 80”.s and remember seeing Salba skate Baldy pipe as a grom. Things I’ll never forget. Been rocking a Salbatage hat lately cause of Badlands roots. Super sick
How this has only 3.7k likes at 170k views idk but it deserves a hell of a lot more! So rad that you guys set up the "veterans" and that a lot of these guys are still getting respect that they deserve 🔥🔥 Salba was before my generation as I was born in '87, but respect goes where respect is deserved. Core skateboarding right here that helped evolve the lifestyle on its steps to my version of skateboarding that I found and adored back in '99 all the way til infinity 🤙🤙
God Steve Alba is such a cool ass dude and a great soul!!! I have his Tiger board- it’s soooo sacred to me! What I wouldn’t give to sit and have a beer with him, and hear all the sacred skate war stories! Or even skate with him! What a legend! 🤙🏼
I think it’s super cool that Tony n Lance took the time to be polite n reverent to this cat and company. They sure shit on these guys when they were young. Nice to see grown ups not being locals
SALBA always seemed more relatable growing up watching the Powell & Santa Cruz videos. I wasn't doing 720s, or going 12' like Hosoi etc. To last until 60 in such a destructive activity is amazing.
In the late 80's when i was a kid riding the Pipeline. My best memories was when Micky and Steve would roll in and take over the park and kick me down with stickers.
I see the future of flatground competitions like this- Small stick-on accelerometers on the noise and tail of the board with a small wireless antenna, built in a way that does not effect the skating. Same thing in both of the skater's shoes. The data is inputted into software that knows the specific rotation for each trick with a margin for error built in. This way you can truly define an impossible from a 3-shuv etc. No more judging by eye, no more ambiguity between how each skater does a trick. They must rotate the board within a certain margin of error, and their feet must stay within a certain bounds as well. The feet software could have a larger margin for error, like accounting for different styles of tre-flips. As long as there is a set boundary for what is and what isn't a trick, I think this cound revolutionize the competition side not just for skateboarding but for other judged competitions in general.
I totally remember watching Salba on Wheels of Fire. I think I have still have that VHS ion my mother's addict, with Animal Chin, H-Street, Questionable and Love Child. I started skating in the mid 1980's up to like 1996. I felt like the early POWER skating years of guys like Salba or Hosoi on vert simply looked better. It felt good to skate that way. I regret that I stopped. Two of my old buddies still skate today. I wish I had never given it up.
My first 'proper board' (I don't include the polyprop from '82 or the Variflex from '87....) from back in 1988. Santa Cruz all the way holmes. Much love.
Thanks to SALBA ,Tony ,lance ,Steve ,Mike ,Micky,Tommy,Mark,Jesse,Jeff,Neil … and btw if you can’t put the last names to these guys you weren’t part of our world. These guys were my Hero’s . Thank you so much for all you guys have done. Changed my life. You guys are loved the world 🌎 around. Sorry I missed so many names.
The way he slid underneath the guard rail with his bike. Pure style.

Nice one Bro ✌
I strongly disagree. Anyone that wants to ride a skateboard is welcome as long as they don't act like a dick. No pre or co-requisites.
or you know, let kids skate because its not that serious and they're going out to rip just like everyone else
I guess it's just a matter of knowing your roots...
Boredom mostly
SALBA will always be the GOAT to me 🤘🏴☠️

Salba is a real legend in not only skating, but what it is to live.
Great memories, this POMONA BOY . Skated pools all around the I.E. , THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
This video should be so much longer I could listen to he's skate stories for hours😊
Salba intimidated me and my friends when we made that trip from Torrance to Upland. The Alba's, Olsen, Duane and Chris Miller would be there. We would just watch.
I grew up in Lomita, graduated Narbonne high 91

Check out the 9club Salba addition 👍
Epic!! Salba has inspired so many generations of skaters and continues to do so! Very honored to see so much of my footage in here, thank you!!
Hero status. Lines. Hospitality. SOLID. SOOO inspirational. Thank you both, Steve & Micke🖤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

$5,000 for his first Kryptonics signature deck? Add some more zeros to that! He has a museum in all of those boxes.
Facts !!
Love and RESPECT! Thank you SALBA for being true to yourself, true to skateboarding and true to your passion!

@@ericduminilyeah, he doesn’t look like the beer drinking type lol! dude does not look 60, that’s for certain.

I'm grateful to live & sk8 in SALBA LAND! Salba is a super hero!!
Favorite skater! Salba is the best.
A true legend amongst legends.
Thank you Lord Salba🙏🛹🎸
Thank you Steve you were one of the one's I would follow. I'm 66 now with neophrophy in my legs and feet so can't skate anymore. God bless you and family and keep on keeping on.Bill.
I just watched this and it is truly inspiring me at the age of 59 to pick up my skateboard and go and grind some gnarly coping.
Congratulations Steve
That photo of Bill Dorr doing a frontside grind in Thrasher is etched in my memory. It blew my mind that a guy in his 60s was ripping at that level.
The most truthful statement in this was " Salba is Santa Cruz ". Great series S.C, let's see more .....
Amazing, what a legend.
This should just be the preview. This man has so many stories.
Very cool! Can't wait to see it. Congrats Steve.
Full on. VIVA ALBA!
going through a knee injury right now this really help lift my spirits and know that were in this skateboarding thing for life
Great to see this Documentary made. And Tony was definitely the right ballast to put the rifts into perspective.
Wow imagine if Tony hawk is looking up to you 😱😱
Watch his podcast with Rodney Mullen if you wanna see Tony fangirling over one of his friends.
Tony used to be spat at. One of the reasons he wouldn’t go to pools with them. Gotta pay your dues. Not just rock up….
Great video, I grew up in Upland skating in the 80”.s and remember seeing Salba skate Baldy pipe as a grom. Things I’ll never forget. Been rocking a Salbatage hat lately cause of Badlands roots. Super sick
I am inspired! Thanks, S.ALBA
This is the best, skating for fun forever. Fuck ya alba 🤟🤟
As a 39 year old getting back into sk8in this past two months, I really enjoyed this and is inspiring
What an inspiration!

Only knew the guy by name for many years, turns out he's cool af!

salba reminds me of uncle Rico from napoleon dynamite... throwing his old footballs at the camera. lol!!!!
XD
I think it’s super cool that Tony n Lance took the time to be polite n reverent to this cat and company. They sure shit on these guys when they were young. Nice to see grown ups not being locals

What a great story. I remember those old magazines showing him in pools.
I'm 46 and re-learning how to skateboard. Can still do some simple stuff, ollie, nollie and some other things, but very inspired to keep going.

I regret that I stopped. Two of my old buddies still skate today. I wish I had never given it up.
this is so much bigger than skating - thank you Steve and Santa Cruz
He’s still so fucking cool 😎.. for real. What a inspiration 💪

My first 'proper board' (I don't include the polyprop from '82 or the Variflex from '87....) from back in 1988. Santa Cruz all the way holmes.
Much love.
