Knox was so ahead of his time. I literally filmed his Speed Wheels part in one day and drove away baffled with what I had just seen. A true street pioneer and solid guy. Much respect.
I didn't know he filmed his Speed Freaks part in one day, that's amazing. It's such a fun part to watch and blew me away when i got the video years ago. Plus, Tom seems like a real cool guy.
Tom was the coolest. When i was about 13 or 14 he was in Bakersfield and was skating what we called the McDonald's banks. It was a small 3' bank behind McDonalds. He hung out with us the whole day and was just down to earth and super Cool. Im 45 years old now and have never forgotten that day.
When I did judo with him at like 12 yrs old, he told me the same thing, judo will help you learn to fall, never broke a bone doing some crazy stuff skating, and now at 31, still skating, a true home skate legend who did it right, and helped to build that unique Visalia skate culture
So that's why it took so long for Tom's board to come out. I met him right after that competition and he showed me his board before it came out. One thing I learned about skateboarding from him was not that he was technical.... it was that he was consistent. He would do simple tricks, solid. He was very controlled. His runs were solid. He would never remember me but I skated with him on about 5-6 different sessions. Twice in Visalia, the rest in Bakersfield with the guys from Wavelengths.
Tom was my first skate inspiration with Natas. i used to watch his speed freaks part thousand times, and i've had his board when i was twelve. Now i'll try to keep my bag of tricks just like him, and stay in shape with exercise cause now i'm into swimming so he's still inspiration... twenty years later!!!
Tom Knox was a Great role model as a kid , great role model as grown man ! He's always been the best , still fast ,atv and having fun . Staying healthy has its privileges.
Literally bought a Tom Knox reissue "punk" yesterday because I love his skating and just the dude that he is.... if the vibe on the board is like him, its going to sweet as.
Sup homie? I remember hanging out with you guys and skating at the high school in Visalia. I'm smiling remembering these great memories as a youngster. Blessing brother.
I can’t count how many times I watched his part and then went out and tore curbs apart. He was one of the major influences in my skating back in the day. I rode A LOT of curbs. Sooooooo much grinding. I love it. Thanks for being so rad Tom. 👍
Hey Tom....so remember skating the curbs at Mt. Whitney with you at lunch time. Good to see you're still killing it. Remember you were an awesome drummer too. So talented. Wanted to be like you when I grew up! Take care! It we always me, Rodney Powell, Eric Thomas, skating and drumming with Ed and Steve Jefferies.
@@adamhalstead2561 I never had one, but remember the ad in Thrasher where Tom Knox was saying how long it lasts. Did it live up to your expectations? Man, that must have been back in '90 or '91!
Oh hell yes..black with yellow red classic santa cruz letters..I remember my dad getting it for me for birthday..the everslick tripped me out and I was enamored..
@@adamhalstead2561 when I moved in the dorms in college, a kid had that santa cruz everslick deck. it was pristine cause the dude didn't actually skate. so i said hey let me try a boardslide and slid the crustiest curb ever and went right to wood. i was being a dick cause jealous of kids who got shit like that and didn't skate.. kinda feelz bad man lol
Tom I knew your mother, she would come into my work place Save Mart super market off of Mooney Blvd. She comes shopping three times a week and I would talk to her while bagging her groceries and taking it to her car. She is very nice and cool, this was around 1988 -89. Didn't go to Redwood , Mt. Whitney was my stomping grounds. Was researching Santa Cruz and your vid came up lol. Peace brother.....
i skated with Tom knox back in 1987 after, i met him at the visalia surf shop we skated a curb at visalia mall when gottchalks was still separated from the mall.
Holy sh that first tailslide on the curb....never saw that approach before i wanna try it now...Tom Knox i remember his classic fire graphic always Santa Cruz por vida
I remember a quote from Tom from a 30 year old interview: Once a skater always a skater. That kick flip wall ride 30 years ago on a bulky deck by today’s standards was insane. These kid’s today doing stuff using DIY videos from UA-cam have no idea how hard it was to learn a trick and not have anyone to teach you. We rewinds vhs tapes over and over just to rewatch a part. And if your VCR didn’t have slow mo....well your screwed trying to figure stuff out. We didn’t have smooth surfaced skateparks. We had rough rugged terrain and police making us leave. We didn’t have these decks modified to the designs of spin/flip tricks like today’s skaters. We had fish tailed/bulky decks that took a lot of time to learn a trick. Learning a 360 flip back then(last trick I learned) was hard/painful yet was gratifying. Nothing was giving to us easy. We worked for it. And I wouldn’t trade my youth for anyone of today and their experiences
I always liked Tom Knox. That interview where he ollied four milk crates made my bedroom wall much nicer looking. I was never much for Santa Cruz boards, I was more into H-Street at that time. One if my friends had that firat graffic as his first board. He got it with venture trucks and cockroach wheels. Another friend of mine that ripped was a diehard Santa Cruz guy. I can only remember him riding one board that was not NHS. He had the Tom Knox black flag board and a lot of those first ever-slicks of Tom's.
one of my favorite Humans. i am proud to call you Friend. XCNT interview as always. Fucking love the 'redux' tricks at the spots (complete with a VisaTweaker at Whitendale!) keep kickin ass..... and come down and surf ! LOL
Just found out that there is another tom Knox! Kind of embarrassed, in my first deck, was a late 80s, Tom Knox Santa Cruz, with pink grip! It may have had gullwing trucks, or maybe they were variflex! The wheels were crap!!! I had bought it in 1990! LOL (pretty late!) To add insult to injury, I then, got a spare pair of Indy stage sixes, on the setup! This would begin, a history of bad setups for me!
Knox was so ahead of his time. I literally filmed his Speed Wheels part in one day and drove away baffled with what I had just seen. A true street pioneer and solid guy. Much respect.
Definatly one of my biggest influences dude kills it

Natas did filmed, I suppose? However, great guy on camera, too.
Thank you Tony :)
Tom is my jiu jitsu teacher!

Bryan Goodyear yo I do judo and skate they go well together
This needed to be longer, much longer.
Another massively under appreciated legend. Great clip. Hes still ripping and in great nick.
Totally agree with you. I think Tom, Frankie Hill and Jeff Kendall are forgotten pioneers in the street revolution.
I can't say how inspiring it is to see this and how well Tom is doing.
more of Tom and Wade Speyer
This was my favorite part in speed freaks. Tom Knox very cool dude. Thank you for the inspiration.
This made my day. I remember watching this part hundreds of times, studying every single trick. So cool to see Tom still has it!
The dude has always been solid. His focus and dedication have made him a professional on many levels.
Tom had a huge influence on me when I was a young man. Thanks for this interview. Tom rules!
"if you can't jump up it dont jump down it" wise words from a wise man
I watched speed freaks a thousand times back then... Tom Knox and Jim Thiebaud were the best.
One of my favorite videos and skate parts. I tried to do every curb trick he did. I did. Thanks Tom.

He's still got it! :) That kickflip wallride and fakie nosegrind rocked my world and changed my life.
I live in Italy and I still have my skate Tom Knox Santa Cruz buyed when I was 15 years old 👍👍👍
The Tom Knox Santa Cruz shape is the best. It’s like a hybrid vert/street board, very versatile. 🙏

Es un gusto poder decir que tuve la gran oportunidad de tener 4 veces el tablero de tom knox a comienzos de los 90,s
Tom is a good old friend...glad to see he has made some appearances on the web. "They call it Cal." - Tom Knox
This is a rad video. Makes me want to go skate and that is all you can ask for.
Just got a flashback to when the everslick board came out. Who else remembers that?
I totally got it for Christmas! Indys, sants cruz wheels all on a brand new everslick complete. Damn I was so stoked and skated until I fell out

I remember the everslick deck with the straight edge cross on the fist (top of the board graphics). :)
My 1st real board was a Tom Knox board in the early 90's. I loved the wide tail.
That fire board was my first ever proper board.
Best birthday present ever.

I still have my old Santa Cruz Tom Knox board from the 80's. It's beat up, but still plenty skateable.
Awesome interview, I was a younging looking to learn about this guy, he's awesome!
My second deck when i first start to skating was his deck and it was awesome
I just got
1 of your decks . very special
Still trying to reach the level of skill that Tom has. Once as a young skateboarder and now as one of his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students. Much respect.
This made my day!

OK Tom Knox 2023. 😅 cool.
He filled out
Tom knox is rad. I look at skating like martial arts in a way totally lol
he reminds me of christian fletcher
Mane Lew
A little off the subject, but Christian Fletcher, at times, seems like the vanilla ice of surfing.
Curbs: fuck, that Tom Knox fuckers back. Aint no curb safe.
Oss tom knox
Tom Knox... I tried to mold my style between him and Neil Blender.
kewl
Tom finds all the best ledges
1st board was a knox
Why do people have to be so rude! He was just asking a question. Damn
