In this video we show you how much fabric to buy for your upholstery project. Sometimes it can be hard to determine how much fabric you need to buy to reupholster a sofa and you don't want to be buying too much as upholstery fabric is expensive and you certainly don't want to be buying too little!
So we show you how to measure your furniture for upholstery and how much allowance you need to give either for sewing or stapling off. We also show you how to measure fabric and how to cut your fabric for upholstery and we also go through how to make a cutting plan for upholstery.
We also show you the difference in measuring and cutting for fabric and measuring for leather.
Measuring for leather upholstery can be tricky so we break it down in an upholstery for beginners style tutorial!

It’s been stuffed with cushion inserts by its previous owner but I think it should have some sort of box frame base 🤷♀️ no idea how to start a base like that so I’ve been trawling UA-cam and google lol 😂

Also, how much extra would you add for piping? It's around all of the cushions and around the outside arm where it joins the inside arm. I assume i would be cutting it on the bias to go around the corners better...
Yes always on the bias. Don't add any on to the cushions as it doesn't seem to make much difference in my opinion. 🙏🧵⛏️✂️📐

Thanks this is really helpful. I'm looking at using a polyester velvet to recover a sofa. The velvet has a nap, so I'm thinking that will affect how i cut the fabric, as i can't cut pieces sideways to use up the excess on the side of the bigger pieces, as the nap will be going the wrong way. Do you have any advice on working with velvet?
Yes always run the pile/nap down on every panel.
You can run it if you like but then the shading can change depending on the angle you are looking from. Could do a whole video on this to be honest.
