In this video I build on my previous two tracking videos on the basics of tracking animals and humans and discuss the principals of to employ anti-tracking methods in evasion. Having good tracking skills puts you at an advantage in anti-tracking as the exact principals that we apply in tracking are what you should be avoiding in anti-tracking. In this anti-tracking video I discuss counter tracking methods such as brushing out spoor, the button loop, using the terrain and water to your advantage and evading dogs.

This video is still pertinent, as tracking skills will always be useful in the bush. Drones are not always available, and if you put all your faith in tech that is not present, then the skills you should have acquired will be lacking.

Great video! A couple tips about being tracked by dogs. If you are trying to evade dogs that can be very difficult. The best way to defeat a dog is to first realize that you will likely never fool the dog. Dogs are literally built around their noses and they are the perfect tracking machine. Instead of trying to fool the dog focus on fooling the dog HANDLER. Do things that will cause the dog to behave in ways that will make it look like the dog is confused or struggling to maintain the track. The dog may not be confused at all but any behavior that looks confused or erratic by the dog may lead the dog handler to believe that the dog has lost the track or is on the wrong track. The DOG is the pro, the dog handler is the weak link so exploit the handler. There are some very specific techniques that can be employed to fool dog handlers. A good handler is also hard to fool so be very thoughtful about how you attempt to fool the handler. Also, take the path least travelled. If you maneuver through very difficult terrain tracking becomes very difficult. Dogs can typically get through most difficult terrain much easier than their handler but remember you are trying to defeat the handler so make movement as difficult as possible for the handler. If it is hard for you to get through the terrain then it is also just as hard on the handler.

You won't evade a good tracking dog on foot. Your best option is to employ some form of transportation, like a bicycle, canoe, etc.
If this doesn't make sense. You didn't say anything specific about how to evade dogs, or even about how to fool the handler. You also didn't mention what will happen when the dogs catch up to you. Most hunting and tracking dogs are taught to latch onto the suspect and make noise until the handler arrives. What exactly is your strategy for that?
@@my2cents49 Walk in circles in a spiral, walk in zig zags up and down hills, walk in spiral circles on hills, avoid pathes like dirt trails, atv trails, try to stay in the bush, climb difficult terrain only if the situation applies that it's on your route to extraction. A detour is ok just as long as the detour doesn't have you running back into your pursuers.
When you said put a shemagh over your shoe reminded me of a tip to put socks over your shoes. It would make the tracks look older and possibly buy yourself some time.

It’s so crazy to see that other people still do this stuff. I was a border patrol agent at one of the toughest stations that was known for having the best man-trackers in the agency. We tracked people every day and night through mountains, forests and deserts. The US marshals and some search and rescue teams used to come and work with us to gain experience.
People say that this is a useless skill nowadays because of technology but it’s not true. I built a business around making tools for sign cutting and it’s still growing steadily. I’m just happy to see that civilians still do it.

I love that you started the video tracking the trackers. I was a Cavalry Scout and we trained to evade the enemy until we had an ambush. Circling around and surprising your trackers is a lot of fun.

I did a lot of tracking for a nuisance wildlife control company in Salt Lake City, Utah. We did a lot of live traps and relocations of live animals. Kinder and gentler wildlife control company. I had an idea while you're walking in the water you have three or four sticks that you have picked up earlier put in your pocket rub the stick in your hair maybe spit on it toss it up into some thick brush throw them off do these on both sides so they get confused backtrack and be totally unpredictable. If you are going to come back to the area, you can employ tracking indicators a small stick or twig across the trail to see if someone has gone through and then covered their tracks.😮

Hi Clarise, love this tacking and anti-tracking videos. I stay on a farm and the farmers doing a lot of tracking of wild animals like rooikat here. For me that day job is in cyber security (digital forensics) this is so great to identify wild animals behaviour by following their spoor. This skills are also not praticed a lot, as we are so much dependend on tech and not spending enough time in nature.

Ok so i just subbed, been watching a lot of USA and UK channels and was surprised to finally find a local one. Makes more sense to learn about local bush craft as we have totally different fona & flora then them, this is the first video i have looked at. Will check out the others with hopes that wild edibles and medicinal plants and such are also covered. Stepping out of the concrete prisons we live in and learning how to go about it "relatively" safely is a good start. Glad i found the channel.

I was hunting the other day and saw some cutty-grass on a hill damaged / bent 90 degrees half way down the stalk, from where another hunter had grabbed it to stabilise themselves . That sign will last many, many months. I now look for sign of other hunters in the area for safety reasons. Also helpful to understand hunting pressure on the animal population . Not a natural thing to do though as I am normally looking for deer
You're right it's a permanent sign now. The trick then is to be able to age it. Which gets harder by the day but sometimes also less relevant. Very nicely done. One of the best tracking vids I've watched. Rather than button hook. Hook, leave a decoy, continue around behind, cross the original track well behind them and continue on a divergent track on the opposite side of your buttonhook divergence. When they lose your trail, they will suspect a back track, they will find it, see your inaccessible decoy, try to figure out how to access it. Even if they figure out they were tricked by the time they reach the track that they trampled, you will be long gone, especially if you changed your track with the window caulking. I like to mimic their tracks, or common tracks that I encounter. Happy trails!😅

Another tip, go where people don't want to go. You mentioned water, but there are also marshes, thorn bushes etc, it's a case of can you stand being in unpleasant circumstances more than the tracker.
When she's at the waters edge, I can't help myself from being distracted by the thought of a croc just hanging out waiting for an opportunity. I'm American but I lived in Australia and I guess I have never forgotten that you never never ever assume there are no crocs around. Maybe she is in an area where crocs aren't found but I still get creeped out.

Wow! Just came across this video by happenstance, and it brought back a flood of happy memories. I was trained to track and evade by my grandfather, a chippewa indian fron turtle mountain res in North Dakota. Our family ended up in Denver CO, (unique
story) . Anyhow many walks through the alley ways and parks of Denver also. He always spoke about how awareness was king, try to think like they think, and do not be afraid to take the path less followed because that is where you will find adventure and treasure. These amongst many more little tidbits of wisdom. I broke trail mid message, hopefully you will follow, lol. Thank you for bringing back these wonderful memories.
Living in the mountains off grid and have been a hunter for over 50yrs I can tell you that the best way to be found is to move. You can sit still and be visible and not be seen. Vanish in plain sight.
true.. the human brain often filters out things it does not expect to see in an environment unless the object is moving.. also moving steadily straight towards or directly away from people helps minimise their awareness
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Maybe cross that river and hide in the foliage? Trackers will be looking for movement so don't move. A windy day helps in that regard.

Millions over the years have escaped tyranny. The good guys ain't always the trackers.
Also understanding the Track Pursuit Drill that the trackers apply. What drills they apply when they lose sign. Ever tracker loses sign, its those drill they apply to reestablish or cut sign again.

One question for the knowledgable good people here... In a tracking evade scenario that would take place over 2-3 days or more, with no fire poss, would you say it's worthy to follow a water stream to conceal your foot track? Despite the ‘risks’ that comes with wet feet, wet socks & shoes?… Great video, thanks! Cheers
This might sound strange at first, but we have seen individuals who have SERE training and have begun having issues with their memory. Of course, they keep the memories of this stuff but forget that the caretaker didn’t kidnap them. I’ve been on one or two calls where “dad” wasn’t lost, he was trying to hide/escape. Not to mention the mental health aspect that could lead to this scenario. It’s nice to see some of the things that these patients may try to use to avoid rescue.

Good vid 👍 Having watched the trackers operate on hunts, mostly ex poachers and knowing a policeman that lived 6 months with the bushmen, I was contemplating doing such a tracking / antitracking course, was also based in the Cape somewhere.
I've been on a basic primitive survival course overseas, bow making, flint napping, flint knife making, snare making, fire making, making natural rope and nets, skinning and hide tanning etc.
Was a crash course covering many things but obviously with a very European flavour to it and when it comes to the art of knapping and making arrow heads it would take me a life time to master, it's not easy. No1 rule, always have a knife 🤣
But I would like to do the S African courses sometime. I spent most of my childhood in the bush with a sling or kattie or a blowgun and I'm big into the prepper / survival topics so it must be a fascination I've always had.
Some of the Alone series were good, series 7 with Roland Welker -excellent!
And for antitracking I recommend watching the Manhunt series with Joel Lambert, the ex-Navy Seal testing specialist tracking units around the world, in one episode he took on the anti poaching unit in S Africa.
Growing up listening to stories of the Koevoet Ovambo trackers in the border wars, I think there'll be a big interest in these type of courses.

Water carries scent better than many other surfaces, I do not recommend using against dogs. Even if it is fast flowing, there will still be a scent trace along the bank, though that is at least a bit less risky, but ultimately they are still very likely to pick you up again rather quickly, even using an overhanging tree or other gimmick to exit will only slow an experienced dog handler down briefly.
Brushing out a trail is generally a waste of time, though I will agree it has at least some viability on a sand dune if the trackers are not using dogs for some reason and are an hour or more behind you...
In a military situation, follow your training. In a civilian situation, get a really good head start, get out of the bush immediately(they WILL find you eventually), have A LOT of cash, only pay with cash, use vehicles, avoid cameras, change clothes multiple times, use different hats, make sure they are all as generic as possible, if possible change hair style/colour at least once, never sleep under the same roof twice, don't leave important things behind, don't go back for important things you left behind, have an exit strategy.

I'm just a hobby k9 handler but I can tell you dogs can track in water without too much difficulty, even if it's flowing because there is always a boundary layer at the shore where scent accumulates. Also for dogs, scents don’t really mask each other unless we're talking about something extreme. We often hold introductory training sessions for pups on freshly mowed grass, a freshly plowed field won't cause any problems.
What if they swim a mile down river? 😉
@@Mrbfgray If it's a smaller river, the dog will follow the scent near the shore. Of course if you're talking about swimming in the middle of the Mississippi for miles, that could work but I wouldn't recommend.

Being a service member some of these are good points but always remember you can leave tracks of various kinds to get people where you want them as well. Always be careful when tracking an individual as you dont always know who or their level of training and what they have left behind for you.

Great instruction. Thank you. Important I think also, is WHO is tracking you? Most people are inexperienced in tracking and the speed you lose covering your track/story might, in most cases, not be worth it. Time=Distance.

A key component is missing. When tracking someone, we are making an educated guess as to where the person is heading. Whether that is a water source, or shelter or a road.
Tracking is not just following tracks, it's using the signs of that track to anticipate where the person is heading. A key evasion technique is to NOT being going someone obvious or deductible. If know there is a cave, do not head toward it.
BTW, a good dog will not be fooled by heavy smell areas. They can tell identical twins apart. Nor, are you really going to fool a good handler. If being tracked by dogs, your choices are limited. You either fight the tracking team, you surrender, or you move so quickly the trackers cannot follow. Speed is your friend here. You don't really have to outrun the dogs, you have to outrun the handler.

Deer will use the but n hook or j hook. I've also watched them use water. Cross creek go down stream opposite shore then cross again going up stream and behind the dogs then cross again(same trail making a big circle) go downstream opposite shore again still following the dogs then at the second crossing head downstream. The dogs keep following the first trail in a circle.

Good video, I suggest people carry extra large wool socks with them to put over their boots to leave lest noticeable tracks, I also carry cayenne pepper with me to screw the dogs scent capability for a bit .

I just finished your video and I have a couple ideas I’m hoping to get your opinion on.
If your being tracked by a dog grab some rocks, rub your scent on them and throw them across the ground randomly as you travel.
Find a hill or ridge line and same idea as before but maybe attach small pieces of your clothes to the rocks and the hight should give your rock some extra distance with the advantage of whoever is tracking you will have to now go up hill to find your track. Maybe up an down a couple times? Last idea, if your lucky enough to find a stream how about floating a piece of your clothes down stream while you go up stream? I’ve heard a man can outpace a horse by running 100 yards then walking 100 yards and repeat. What do you think? By the way I live in Alaska and will probably never get the chance to visit your area so thank you very much for the video. It looks beautiful where your at.

My goal is to put as much time and distance between myself and those who are tracking me as possible. I like to urinate into a cave opening, or down a cliff. Or onto a bit of cloth and then throw that down the cliff or into the cave. It helps the dogs and people following them not to find me. Meanwhile, I set off in a new direction. I also carry a roll of window glazing material that I can use to alter my boot print. I change my boot print Everytime I enter a nice big patch of hard rocky terrain. When I leave that area, it is in a different direction and I leave with a totally different track. I have a zillion such tricks. Or I tie a shirt to a tree in some inaccessible place and leave something reflective too. Makes it appear like I'm hunkered down. Used to train trackers. The main thing that I want trackers to know is NEVER to underestimate the skills or intelligence of the person that they are tracking, especially if that person is dangerous and knows they are being tracked. Keep an eye out for traps too.

Fun video. I had precious traps stolen as a child and became very conscious of not leaving sign of my presence in the woods and fields. I always hid from sight of anyone as well. Now I have a name for that: “anti tracking”. Thank you.
If dogs are involved, the button hook should be down wind so your body scent is not blown across the trail. Some dogs are magical at locating the source of airborn scent molecules. Also, dogs do find scent in water, and especially where it comes to shore. I have watched a hound swimming perfectly trail a muskrat which I saw but he didn’t. I would send scent down steam and go up stream. Although any one who knows me would probably predict that. So maybe at least go upstream enough to leave some scent and sign upstream, and then leave as little as possible when I turn and go downstream.

An Anti Poaching Ranger here ..... we practice all to most of those skills ..... one thing i would recommend is a shoe with a softer bottem , like a vellie somthing with flat bottem ..... it leaves much softer track making it harder to read in most soil types especially in harder soils .... best is the longer you where them the more worn they become meaning edges will become round and the thread rounds off and looks like an old animal track....
Just a good tip , rough shoe leaves alot of marks
Glue foam to the bottom of your shoes. Wind will help move the scent. Also move quickly. Tracking can be slow and tedious without a k9.

Depending on the ground and vegetation, when you want to get off a track to put in a hook, you can try to jump to a position parallel to the track and hopefully not leave additional sign, so your tracks end fairly abruptly. This can be employed if you have a group - e.g. a patrol so the entire group gets off the track at once, although another method with a group is for one or two members to drop off every now and then - again it depends on the terrain as to how far between groups dropping off so the size of the group gradually gets smaller.
These were standard techniques for Aussie sections and platoons about to put in a harbour or a hook or hasty ambush in the says before the GWOT.

The best way to practice these skills is walk in a large circle at some point you will be tracking yourself. Look at your tracks and motions to find your mistakes. Continue tracking yourself until you know longer leave a trail.

I knew a guy in U.S. Special Forces who was in Vietnam. They did an operation and where detected, I don't know if he was by himself or in a group. He started to evade the tracking party with dogs, is was the Viet Cong (VC) in pursuit. He or they start using an evasive anti tracking technique of running in a zig-zag pattern for miles. The Cong trackers figured out what he, they where doing and countered there movement by running up the center of the zig-zag pattern. He said they or he was almost captured but he crossed into an area they would not go or got to pick point. At any rate he lived to tell the story and to go on doing 4 tours of combat in Vietnam. Guy had balls I say that much.
I've heard of animals button hooking downwind back to their bed. They also leave on a different way than they come in.

A few things I picked up for anti tracking is to keep a pair of socks big enough to go over your boots this will appear as older print's plus it's quieter as for a piss break pee into water if it's possible or a bottle
Great video with lots of valuable information! However, please insert some pause moments in these types of videos, just some moments of rest to let the information sink in and focus on the next segment. It's currently a continuous stream of speech, which can be very exhausting to follow attentively!

Regarding walking backwards causing deeper heal imprints. You need to be careful over simplifying the tracking principals, over extending the gate can cause deeper heal indents especially if you are carrying a heavy load.
FYI… US border patrol has some of the best mantrackers in the world. People from other countries may not know this. They do it every day at some stations still.

Using 'a body of water' to hide the footprints only works if the water is very turbid and flowing with enough force to carry sediment, which will camouflage the footprints, otherwise it does not work.
The best thing is to walk in the areas close to the bushes, where the roots go down, under the foliage, and even then use a bunch of leaves to 'erase' the footprints. When a tracker searches for footprints, it naturally searches in logical areas where people walk, such as in the middle of trails and spaces. This technique deceives the tracker in two ways: The first is that it will not wait for the person to walk past the bushes and the other is that in addition, the footprints will be 'erased'. People just have to be careful not to break branches from the bushes and avoid cutting down green leaves or new branches at all costs.
When backtracking always do so as you transition into terrain that is very difficult to track through ( e.g., stone, rock, a stream or a leafy area). In other words a spot where your next print would naturally be hard to see. Dead end tracks give you away unless the tracker thinks that you have continued forward. Oh, and a pair of socks over your shoes can also make tracking more confusing.

Excellent information, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. Question, why in the world do you play background music over your voice? We came to hear you, not fight the thump-thump, shuffle-shuffle background music. Be aware many viewers have hearing difficulties, thus the background music, a.k.a. intrusive noise, quickly becomes extremely annoying and distracting. Viewers must then concentrate on what you are saying and at the same time concentrate on tuning out your background music; frustrating. Also, the sound quality of this video could be improved.

hey just ignore the haters in the comments..i thought your video was good to watch and you make a lot of valid points, and i think they seem to think you're laying out all your knowledge in one video.. I'm good at spotting patterns in things.. connections.. and it strikes me after seeing the AMOUNT of hate and the real vitriol behind it that maybe some of the hate is from one person, or a channel who sees you as competition, or an ex.. as it seems very similar in grammatical structure and style

If you can't run 10kms under an hour don't even think you'll be not found hiding your tracks, If you are found and don't want to get tracked you have to put the maximun distance between you and your tracker as fast as you can, STO principle. BTW if you can run 10kms under an hour you may be able to put 20 in about 3. Hiding tracks it's ok when you are not yet tracked.

Pee on the ground and sprinkle black pepper around it. The dog smells your sent, then gets a whiff of the pepper in his nose, and it will mess up his nose for a full day. Without dogs on your trail, you have a better chance of evading the chasers.
I remember from some story they did that but with cocaine, and I guess the cocaine completely ruins the dogs nose for a while
