Considering this is an alpha image I'm impressed that it works at all. They did have a label explaining this when it first came out but it's since been removed... and I hadn't seen any modifications made to the image to improve it. Hopefully it will just get better with time. This video is the first step towards that. I'm working on a page on the wiki for people who want to maximise their performance. It should be out soon.
I really wish we could get this on the Odin! With the ability to overclock and the fans and the lights for people with Odin's that have lights. Really love your video's, Russ.
@@CarsonsVids Was gonna say, I don't really see any reason why the Odin wouldn't be able to run any Linux based OS, they just need to be setup to be compatible with the hardware.

I bought a RG552 based in large part on the recommendations from 2022. Sure I know there's better units out now in 2024, but the 552 has a lot going for it and little to complain about other than battery life and price. I _really_ dislike Android setup/use, so the fact that the 552 could boot either Android or a custom Linux was what pushed me to get it instead of the 556. The 556 is overall a better unit, but my hatred for Android wouldn't allow me to do it! Anyway, thanks Russ for the great info on the 552. I had Rocknix on it, and that was... lackluster. So I was very pleased to find out there were other options like Batocera and AmberElec. I haven't tried AmberElec, but I am familiar with Batocera, so fingers crossed, it's scraping right now!
I've got Batocera running a pc in the living room, arcade in my game room, and on my Odroid Go Advance BE. Really like Batocera, I've tried other emulation station builds, but Batocera is my favorite. Edit: One thing I don't like about Batocera, for the Odroid Go Advance at least, is that they tend to release updates despite performance for several systems getting worse, not better, and several cores getting broken. Idk if other mobile Batocera builds have had this issue or not.
@@fonzitheman PC builds seem to be fine for me, although I did downgrade one to v33 because v34 thought my Gamesir controller was a switch pro controller and the analogue sticks didn't work. For my Odroid, it's pretty crazy how much difference DS and N64 emulation varies from build to build. Don't remember off the top of my head but DS works great on the build I have currently (maybe v32) but on the more current ones it runs at like 15fps.
Love to hear you say that you have 2 552 devices. Me too :) I usually buy 2 handhelds so I can compare 2 firmwares very easily. I don't even have a handheld channel.. Really sad that I have 3 WinMax's to test the different chips :). Thanks for all your awesome videos, truely the best at it!!!!!
I tried Batocera 34 on my RG552 and there was just too many issues to enjoy it. Sometimes it would just lock up, or the Batocera splash screen would just be half displayed, some themes made the system go to a crawl, and some systems like Saturn aren't even available. I can appreciate the work going into it, but it's just not ready for every day usage on the RG552. For that, I'll stick with AmberELEC.
Someone tried running Saturn on it inside Batocera, but it ran too horribly to even consider enabling on the system. It could be related to the fact that Batocera is using the latest packages/libraries and the Yabansanshiro core has not been updated for years. I have seen Amberelec opting to use the standalone version and wonder if the same could be done in Batocera.
So first and foremost I want to say I appreciate the showcase of the different custom firmwares.. that being said, I'm so tired of these handhelds coming out with sub par operation systems out of the box. I just want a device to work perfectly from the get go. This is why I've mostly been using a OnePlus 6t and a gamesir controller... Getting excited for the gpd xp plus in August, more likely October but whatever
I gave this newest version a shot but seems to perform worse in some ways compared to the original build of Batocera for the RG552. N64 and Dreamcast games definitely take a hit but PSP seems to perform better. At least now it sees my PS1 games but Nintendo DS is missing. Also there is still no sleep mode. I am gonna continue using Android but the other firmwares are getting better on the Linux side. I have yet to try AmberElec's official build for the RG552 but I am expecting similar results.
When it comes to Batocera, bloated and unoptimised to a particular device springs to mind. Their angle always seems to be more is best. When it comes to handhelds I want less is best - slim and optimised. For me JELOS is best for Linux and Android 11 with Daijisho - it’s getting almost daily updates and now offers a great experience.
@The Tired Horizon When it comes to Android you need a build that is free of all the crap that is usually added. Black seraph RG552 build is lightweight and optimised for the handheld, as is the recent official Android 11 update. With all of the work that is going on with JELOS and AmberElec the harder to run systems are getting close to Android but Android has some fantastic Standalone apps that make use of Android’s APIs (Drastic, Mupen64Plus FZ, Redream, Yabasanshiro). Of course Linux+EmulationStation just feels complete 😊
With all the offers on it would be very helpful if you could do a buying guide. I like the shape of the new one, I just wish the screen was at least 4" or 4.5" with the same aspect ratio. I would buy the 552 but going on your review you're saying its uncomfortable to hold and the battery life is poor.
Maybe you can help I have installed it on a sd card but it is not seeing my games on the second sd card which is the one which I previously used for android and other emulators and is in exfat format. Thanks for any help you can give.
will you be covering the new update of amberelec for 351 series? i wanna know your thoughts about it and what useful changes were made. they added a new source for scraping. there were also a few manual adjustments necessary, like moving the scumm game folder.
The developers have a dev unit of the RG353P but they are currently putting their efforts into other devices. But there is a possibility that yes, it will officially come to that device at some point.
I have a question. I got a RG522 with batocera on it and preloaded games on the 2nd sd card everything was working well til I believe my card got corrupted due to cheap card and it wasn't loading games, the games names were there but would jump back to list. Anyways I saved all the roms and actually added alot more from other cards I had. But when I loaded the card into RG522 it just gives me 3 options ports, favorites and all games but nothing shows. It's not reading all the roms etc. What am I doing wrong? Please and thank you. I put everything on a much better sd card
I'm no Russ, but I can tell you from experience that when a storage device (e.g. an SD card) corrupts, there's a chance that some or all of the files get corrupted too. In your case, I'd make sure you're using (prefereably new) error-free SD cards (and I mean _both SD cards, for Batocera and the games_ !), and that you're using software (for Batocera, and the ROMs and BIOS/firmware files) freshly retrieved from a reputable source. Unfortunately you may have to make new savefiles too, if the previous ones don't work with your verified-intact software. Just speaking from experience~ 😔
P.S.: just so it doesn't happen in the future, I'd also advise you to _routinely backup/copy everything on your SD cards onto another storage device_ , at least monthly. SD cards (similar to USB/flash drives) aren't long-lifespan storage devices, you never know when they'll corrupt/fail on you (especially for SDs being used to boot operating systems, their read/write usage can get quite intense), better to be safe than sorry later. 😬

Hi, I tried putting this on my PS5000, it flashed ok and I increased the partition space using disk genius. When I went to add roms it won't show that partition in windows, it keeps coming up with the message that it needs formatting. I can assign a letter to it to show up as its not the main partition. I've tried adding games by looking up the folders in disk genius but it promots me that I can only do that if I purchase the professional edition.
