    Thank you for the detailed instructions on how to cut bias strips. After many years, I was still getting to my machine and having to recut the angles on the ends of many strips!

    Hi Janine, I'm so glad to hear you're starting a cushion project for your kitchen. Once you get through it this project you will have mastered some basic home decor techniques you can use for more beautiful projects around your house. As for piping: I use 5/32" piping cord and cover it with 1 3/4" wide strips which gives a 1/2" lip. I use 1/2" wide seam allowances so the lip lines up with the cut edge of your cushion top.

    Thank you, Peg. I have just made yards and yards from what seemed like a small piece of fabric. Your method is by far the easiest. I've seen various parallelogram methods which always confused me, but this was quick and easy, because you demonstrated it so well

    Love this video. It is educational with sewing terminology. The demonstration is very helpful in where to cut the fabic on the bias and after cutting the bias, most importantly how to cut the strips. Excellent.

      Hello, Marsha, Thank you so much for writing. Your kind comments are very welcomed and deeply appreciated. In the past, I have received comments questioning whether this was an efficient way of cutting bias strips. Everyone has their favorite way, and this one happens to be mine. Slipcover work often requires 30 or more yards of piping strips. Using this method allows me to cut longer strips (hence, fewer joinings) with less waste of precious expensive fabric. If you have any other questions please feel free to write to me email address: littlebug903@yahoo.com. Sincerely, Peg littlebugslipcovers.com

    Hi Mary, thanks so much for writing! I've been fabricating slipcovers professionally for many years and have found this still to be the most efficient method for assembling 30 to 40 yards of bias strip. It's certainly not the only method, but it doesn't require cutting with scissors as does the tube and box methods. That being said: there's always room for improvement! Please share your method so I can try it out; saving tons of time is something I'm all in for! Sincerely, Peg

    I appreciate your slow tempo as a relative beginner. Thank you so much. Your videos are fantastic. I've selected a solid fabric, for my kitchen chairs, duck I believe. For solids, is it as necessary to cut on the bias? It seems like I should probably still cut for piping on the bias?

    Hi Phyllis, Thanks for writing! 600" equals about 17 yards of bias strips. If your strip width is 1 3/4" wide, you should be able to get all the bias strip lengths you need from one yard of fabric. Sincerely, Peg

    Peg, your 10 or 11 videos on this little striped cushion are SO HELPFUL! I've been sewing since the 1980s; my mother was a great teacher and mentor. Now my most ambitious project: a window seat for my new kitchen! Just a question about the piping: What thickness did you use? Was it 1/2"? I've read you should make strips 2x the thickness + 2x the seam allowance. If you used 1/2, that would mean the strips need to be 2" but you made them 1-5/8". Just wondering. Thanks in advance!

    Very well explained. The folding is key. Nice to see this demo and learn expert techniques. I have some questions please:
    1. You use an Olfa Rotary Cutter or other brand? How do you sharpen the blades?
    2. Where can I buy a cutting mat that won't break the bank? Why are they so expensive?
    3. Why does every sewing demo person seem to have a Juki type industrial machine? Is the regular home sewing machine not adequate for cloth projects, or is everyone making sailcloth and upholstery these days?
    4. Could you kindly recommend good cutting shears or do you solely use a rotary cutter?
    Thank you for the very well made demos! I'm enjoying them a lot, and your voice is very soothing.

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers
      @PegBakerSlipcovers  8 років тому

      +Lass-in Angeles Hello! Thank you for writing and for your kind comment. Here are my answers:
      1. I prefer the Olfa RTY 2/G with the straight handle (not the ergonomic style). I have tried Fiskar also, but the Olfa feels good in my hands. I don't sharpen my Olfa blades. I stock up on them when they are on sale and then use them until they are worn out. I place the old blades in a glass jar; when the jar is full, I place the jar in the recycling container on garbage day.
      2. Cutting mats are definitely an investment! The large mat in my table is from JoAnn Fabric www.joann.com/36x59-cutting-mat/2622033.html#start=13. I've had this mat for about six years. It is the second mat of the same kind I've had in at least 12 years. I cut the original mat in half and use a half sheet for small jobs. I believe this is the largest mat that JoAnn carries. I paid around $60 on the last one (I had a coupon). Even at $70 dollars, this mat would cost about $1/month amortized over 6 years. I use rotary cutters more than cutting shears because I like the speed and accuracy of them. However, cutting shears are a must in the sewing room. I use Gingher brand and have them sharpened annually.
      3. The Juki machine in my tutorials is primarily for my slipcover business, but it works well for garment sewing, too. I still use my Janome portable (see the "Little Striped Cushion" tutorial) for some projects. I also have an old Baby Lock serger for over-casting seams in my washable slipcovers.
      Please stay in touch if you have more questions. You can write to my email address: littlebug903@yahoo.com. Sincerely, Peg

      @PegBakerSlipcovers  4 роки тому

      Dear Cathie, a half yard of 56" wide fabric would be more than enough to create the piping for an 18" square pillow. Piping (or welt) strips can be cut on the bias or on the cross grain regardless of the pattern. I prefer making my strip on the bias because the resulting piping has more flexibility. Either way is fine; you may even prefer cutting on the cross grain when you're short on fabric. Please let me know your project is progressing; I wish you every success!

      The base is the top to a drafting table measuring 36 by 60. On this is an underlayment purchased from Rowley Company (similar to acoustic ceiling tiles). The underlayment is covered with tin foil, then 1/4" felt padding (also purchased from Rowley). The final layer is heavy duty canvas. The materials can be purchased from Rowley.

    • @PegBakerSlipcovers
      @PegBakerSlipcovers  2 роки тому

      Hello, Beth. Thank you for writing. That piping was approximately 1/4" thick. There is a range of softness and flexibility in various brands and material content. Because I bought in bulk, I tended to choose a type of piping (also referred to as welt cord) that would work with a variety of fabrics. I speak in the past tense because I am retired now. Please know, however, that I am here if you have any other questions. Sincerely, Peg
