Rules: 1) Each layer should work on its own. 2) No more than 3 layers 3) Thinner on the inside, thicker on the outside. 4) Lighter on the inside, darker on the outside. 3 Crucial Layering Pieces: 1) Shirts- Buttoned or Longer Sleeved ideally. 2) Middle Layers (Most Crucial)- Lightweight vests, Sweaters, Hoodies, Denim Jackets, Fleece Zip-ups, etc 3) Outer Layers (Midweight is Best)- Leather Jackets, Field Jackets, Denim Jackets, Topcoats, Raincoats, Blouson, etc
Great Video Brock. I like the oxford button down shirt under a henley look. The problem fro me, its to tight, especially with a long sleeve shirt, so I wear a short sleeve button down under the henley.
Something not mentioned was the weather of your environment will determine what your layers consist of and the amount of layers. For example, winter in Chicago vs Los Angeles, compared to the high elevation in Canada.
Hi Brock, what is your take on Twill Overshirts (like Everlane’s version for example) as a more casual but still alternative to blazer for smart casual? I mean as outwear in spring and chilly summers or mid layer come autumn and winter? Do think this is a versatile an MVP in a man’s wardrobe?
Brock, excellent video. Been really excited to layer up this winter, but have been feel really uninspired lately. These looks are excellent and provide some awesome inspiration without having to buy anything new (except maybe a vest, lol). Thank you again for some awesome content.
Those are all good tips. However, instead of a sweater, I'd opt for a sweater west. I find it much more comfortable when layering due to sleeveless essence of it. Instead of having the sleeves of your jacket clashing with the armholes of your sweater, which again clashes with the armholes of your shirt causing uncomfortable feelings invoked by a restricting range of motion, a vested garment comes without sleeves, which is a great thing when you think about it. . . Garment is functional just as much when it comes to keeping you warm, plus it's more comfortable and movement-friendly, due to the fact that high no sleeves shall increase mobility (high armholes of c). I also interpret it as a more stylish alternative, because the color of the sleeves of your shirt shall be protruding when you remove your jacket...creating a nice analogous aesthetic (since you avoid contrasts).
Hey, great tips for shorter guys and some cool layering tips. One question, I have a Burgundy knitwear v neck. Can you please suggest the button down shirt and jeans/chinos to wear with this, also any layer up suggestion. Thanks you
wow i am the first to comment yeay...could you in the future maybe post a video on grooming . i dont know i am too shabby so any rules for that or are you among those be neat stay neat guys thanks brock you the best... :D
Just found your channel! Love the videos. I’m currently looking for a good denim long sleeve shirt. Where did you get the one you are wearing in this video?
Awesome video! Loved the first outfit! I was wondering how many inches wide is the shaft of your chelsea boot? I'm really intrested in Thursday Boots Duke and I'm a little concerned the shaft will be to big for my jeans/pants to cover over. I'm about the same shoe size as you (7.5) and I usally get my jeans tapered to a 6.5 inch opening. Thanks!
Hi...I would like to ask if its possible to wear botton up shirt as base layer then put on a v neck sweater as a second layer then put on a quilt vest and a jacket as outer layer specially at cold weather again 1.ashirt 2.v neck sweater 3.quilt vest 4.jacket (leather or bomber )
I don't know what it is but I really dislike the puffy vest and the casual vest style in general, but I do like the more formal ones that you wear with a suit or sport's jacket.
Yes, unless I'm wearing a sweater over the button up. I actually like when a white crew neck is showing a little under a crew neck sweater, but your undershirt isn't really supposed to show under a button up.
SoFreshSoClean81 I was sad to see it go too, but not so easy come, easy go. Not sure I understand the last part of your post, but if you’re in progress, I’d urge you to continue. It’s a long process that takes commitment. This is not a 6 or 8 month endeavor. You have to be in it for the long haul, otherwise you’re just enduring the initial challenges for nothing. In the end, pretty sure you’ll like it a lot. Hang in there. Good luck.
you look a lot more stylish than the other people that you just featured. the other ones look just forced. i liked your examples, pictures, and outfits better
I really hate your videos, because I always want to spend less on cloths but when I see a video of yours I need to resist buying all the stuff I don’t already have... this one is a perfect example. I love vests!
gwimmer98 Wait for sales, buy clothes with most versatility, but neutral colors, invest in clothes with better quality. You shouldn’t spend that much if you’re a smart shopper.
I like nearly all of your looks, except the untucked shirt peaking out under sweatshirts is something that hurts my eyes tbh. I see it *everywhere*, but most notably e-commerce websites for some reason do this all the time with their models, and it makes me not want to buy their items.
Zaman Nihal I’m with you! 👍🏻 It never really got “long” per se, but it was looking good. Epic fail. We’re in the minority it appears, but in the end, it’s his hair.

Most welcome!
Another excellent, practical video that gives credit where credit is due. (Effortless Gent in particular.)
Fantastic video I follow all the style guys on UA-cam and this was the best layering video so far 👍
Loving your short hair. You look gorgeous
My favorite layered outfit is black cardigan + polo shirt + dark chino pants
The four wonderful recommendation for layering. Thank you so much. 😊
Thanks for your inspirational advice. Wish I didn’t get so warm when layering. Haircut looks awesome, Mr.
its great that you give recommendations. putting the ideas into concrete examples that could be used straight up or for inspiration.
Great Video Brock. I like the oxford button down shirt under a henley look. The problem fro me, its to tight, especially with a long sleeve shirt, so I wear a short sleeve button down under the henley.
Great style tips. You've definitely mastered the layer effect.
This is perfect, as I love layering and now have a guide to make it the best that I can!! Thank you, again, for the video- you ROCK!!! :D
You should write a book. You probably already have enough material.
@@dimes3967 Why they?
@@dimes3967 Makes sense now. I thought you meant he went by they lol
Great video. Love your last piece of advice, "don't overthink it, it's just clothes." Always good to have a reminder of that.
Very pure value give in this video, thank you man.
Fantastic information, thank you. Curious, what do you think the ideal length of a wool overcoat is for shorter dudes?
Thanks! Mid-thigh is perfect IMO.
Great suggestions and look book!
The outfit with the leather jacket at 8:10 looks awesome because it matches your hair color perfectly!
Thank you so much for awesome video. Exactly what I wanted to know and looks like solved my problem!
Great video, thanks for the shout out! 🙌
Excellent video! I'm watching it again, it's winter here and of course I'm layering.
Something not mentioned was the weather of your environment will determine what your layers consist of and the amount of layers. For example, winter in Chicago vs Los Angeles, compared to the high elevation in Canada.
Awesome Video... Thank you Brock 😊

My favorite is the Oxford with the crew neck sweater

I LOVE TO LAYER and this will help take that to the next level.
THANKS
Peace ✌
I live in the south of VietNam where just have hot and rain season. The climate is always warm all year. So, in my opinion, two layers are perfect.

Does a Pea coat make a good outer layer as well? Excellent and insightful content as always Brock!
Manuel Mulero yes it does!
Happy2020, Brock layers in the big apple, N.Y. we haven't had a winter.
Perfection! 👍
Nice brock. Would you button/zip up your jackets or leave them open?
Nicely done
Humm, for the base layer, don't need it because I'm very hairy all over chest, back and shoulders so it's perfectly fine !
Great video!

You shouldn't have a problem getting a 6.5" leg over the boots. Anything less than 6 would be a tight squeeze.
How about lower body protection in harsh winter?
Middle aged Santa featured taking up your tips!
Great vid thanks
The hair!!
Very good video. 👍
You're an inspiration for me. :)
Brock where’s your military green field
Jacket from ?
What is the reason to make your hair from long to short?
How come that you're so good and that I suck so much? Great video
U r back.

djpolonos yes, that’s doable if the vest and jacket are both pretty lightweight.
I don't know what it is but I really dislike the puffy vest and the casual vest style in general, but I do like the more formal ones that you wear with a suit or sport's jacket.
How do you feel about bold color statement pieces....?
Personally, I don't really wear them, but if you like them, definitely go for it. Style is (and should be) personal.
Is Michael J Fox in back to the future still a thing?
Why should I layer from light to dark?
good morning!
What are those brown suede boots at 8:43?
What about sport coats and blazers? if wearing them can we go to 4 layers?
Yes, definitely.
Do you wear an undershirt under all your button ups? regardless of season? if it's a crew neck that would peak out and be a 4th layer
Yes, unless I'm wearing a sweater over the button up. I actually like when a white crew neck is showing a little under a crew neck sweater, but your undershirt isn't really supposed to show under a button up.
Not completely related to the video but you did mention undershirts. Which ones do you recommend?
Turner Main my all time favorites are from Ribbed Tee 👌🏼
The Modest Man appreciate the info!
You look so good with shorter hair 😍👌🏻
I would like to know where you got that vest from? Is it from Peter Manning?
It's from J. Crew Factory - www.themodestman.com/j-crew-factory-walker-vest/
@@BrockMcGoff thank you, Brock, however, I just purchased a vest from Peter Manning.

So is a 3 piece suit not good with an overcoat?
That's totally fine!
So there are 4 layers since you are not counting the undershirt 4:00 🤔
Thumbs up for Joey xD
you look a lot more stylish than the other people that you just featured. the other ones look just forced. i liked your examples, pictures, and outfits better

I can't go lower than 4 layers coz of the cold inside my office
Welcome back to another episode of not a podcast, wait wrong channel
You look a lot better with short hair.
What's your height brother?
Roughly 5'6" with shoes on.
@@BrockMcGoff you look like 5"8 👍
Does ridiculous facial hair count as a base layer?

-25 here in leh India ....🤣🤣🤣3 layers won't work ...more than 5
Too bad I live in a tropical country where the less layers, the better.
Less money spent on expensive layering
Count skin and deoderant as layers.
how many linen layers are too many?
Like an onion
Your long hair look was much better than the present one.
I have to disagree.
