I've been thinking for a while that it might be because of his water
Damn!!! This is hands down the best video on hard water vs. soft water. So thoroughly researched and the delivery is clear, educational, and had me cracking up left and right. You rock Mell!!
Your content Mell has been so very helpful, as my hair changed to curly in my 30s and I'm still trying to figure that situation out! Having worked in plumbing I'm pleased to see you address hard vs soft water. One thing I want to throw out there is that people with soft water can also end up with white scale on shower heads, and glass doors and such. I live in an area with some of the softest water in the country - TDS is so low that newfangled water heaters that charge minerals in water won't even work here, and I have to add minerals to stabilize pH for my fish. We get white scale from the additives the water treatment plant uses to increase pH. Which brings up another point: Tap water in soft water areas is high too! The water treatment folks add something to raise the pH to avoid pipe breakdown. So it's likely safest for anyone who isn't on well water to presume their water has a high pH. Since you're the most scientiffy haircare person, if you haven't done so already, I suggest following up with further info for people who have water softening systems. There is more than one type, and one actually adds more to the water (it just bonds with the minerals to keep them from sticking to you and other stuff). While I'm being water-nerdy: People who are immunocompromised or who use a specific shower infrequently need to use some caution about adding a filter to their showerhead. I got this info third hand (a plumber I trust got it from a water expert), but I've been told the #1 source of listeria in the US (and presumably Canada) is shower heads without chlorinated water. It's a good idea to think twice about whether 100% elimination of chlorine in home water is something everyone really wants to do. That's a good reason for overall home softening, but make sure you go to a real plumbing supply store that sells multiple brands and technologies or they'll dazzle you with techy words and not provide adequate pros and cons.
Quick note here from a media professional - You are the best youtube I've ever seen...just came across your channel and legit - I'm really impressed with your personality, wit, and knowledge. Keep it up girl...you'd be great for a major lifestyle network,
This has explained so much for me, I live north of Tampa on the coast where we have extremely hard water. Now I know why my routine isn't working how it should! Thank you!! ...now to convince my parents to get a water purifying system..
@@ManesByMell Yes of course!! I convinced my mom with your video and now it's about getting my dad on board by telling him how the appliances will benefit and they'll save money. Half way there!
Hard water is a disaster for dry skin, finding a good shampoo is really a problem. Thank you for this video! Water quality became so bad in my region for the last few years, so I became allergic to lots of skin products. And if you have a hard water and naturally dry skin, you should stay calm or your skin will be even worse.
Ugh, I WISH we could get a water softening system, our water is really hard. We have a well, but we are also renting. I don't have curls myself but I'm trying to help my two girls with their curly hair and I'm so glad I found this video. I feel like I've been trying to do so many of the right things for their hair, and things have definitely been getting better since I found your videos, but this hard water thing explains SO much. Their hair tends to be frizzy and very undefined, even with using better products. I will have to look into some of these shampoos and try rinsing their hair with distilled water.
My hair is also very frizzy and undefined. It doesn’t matter if I use a leave in or not, whether I use a hard hold gel or mousse, or even if I use stylers that are supposed to help with frizziness and definition. My hair is always frizzy, tangly, and lacks definition.
@@xkenny-personalitydatabase5604 I don't remember what the package said for the one we got but it was reccomend by his hair stylist and has worked wonders. His flakes are almost gone 🤷🏻♀️ Ive never had issues with hard water(that I know of) so Im not fully sure
I just have to say that water quality is everything, when I lived in Valencia, Spain (known for the worst water in Spain) the water was so hard it would create a wax film over your hair and make it shed. I almost went bald living there, it would eat up my curls, and I went from waist length hair to a choppy bob. I used the best and most expensive products I could find, even invested in kerastase hair masks, once a week-nothing. My hair wouldn’t grow... my skin was a mess. Never again. When I left there my hair finally started growing. Hard water is the worst!
OMG I’m from a town near Valencia where the water is really bad, I moved to Barcelona and I can tell you that it is 100 times worst than in Valencia. I have never had good water in my life hahaahha 😢😢
I noticed my hair and skin were so bad after moving to where i live now. I don't remember where I saw it recommended, but i got a filteres showerhead. Changed my life. I can tell when I forget to change the filter out because my skin and hair dry out so bad. When I remember to change it though my skin and hair feel amazing and are so easy to keep clean and balanced.
I purchased a filtered shower head. My hair was getting stringy looking (it is thick which was weird for it to look stringy) my scalp was getting greasy faster and flaky. Today I used my new shower head to wash my hair and the curls look so much better after 1 wash using it. My daughters hair was looking stringy too and she used the new shower head yesterday and her hair looks nicer!
Hey Mel, so my curls look great until I sleep on them. I use the same bonnet as you and I use your bonnet method, but I still wake up with crazy, misshapen, bed head. When I wake up I find that my curls are way less defined and my hair is in a weird shape, do you know how I can fix this?
I kept running into the same problem. Neither pineapple nor the bonnet method worked for my long hair. I attributed it to the fact that I have more of a wave than a curl, and because my hair is quite heavy it easily loses its shape overnight. The only thing that really works for me is refreshing with a little water and I just make sure to sleep on a silk pillowcase and gather my hair in a loose bun or pony, accepting the fact that it'll be a limp, clumpy mess in the morning lol It takes a little trial and error to figure out what works for each of us in the end.
Hey Georgia! I'll link Mell's refresh video for you: ua-cam.com/video/WljidC54MbY/v-deo.html At 8:45 she says that sometimes she smoothes out frizz with a little bit of product (I use a very light leave in conditioner to avoid weighing my hair down) diluted with wet hands. I used this technique and it worked for me! It smooths out my frizz, and I'll even go in with a little bit of gel afterwards to make sure they stay defined. Hope this helps! 😊
The only thing that works on me is grabbing my hair upwards as if I was scrunching, then put a scrunchie over it. If it falls don’t be scared to wrap the scrunchie around it a second time.
Maybe, after it's fully dry, you can plop with a silk scarf. I have long to hips 3a curls and I just flip my hair from one side to another to make it somehow decent but it's nowhere as defined as the day before, so I just give up.
Here’s a twist for you and something I’ve been trying to figure out for a long time: I live in a city but we have hard water. My house has a water softener, but my moms house (where I grew up in the same town) doesn’t. I started having hair problems when I moved into my house. Greasy build up and it was like my conditioner wouldn’t ever wash out. I turned my water softener to the lowest setting and still have issues using conditioner AT ALL. It’s like it will not rinse out and when I go to heat style my hair, it is greasy and stringy. I use Aveda Blue Malva shampoo and I always double wash but I have dark Demi colored hair. I stopped using conditioner and my hair wouldn’t be greasy after. Even if I used a pea sized amount of conditioner, my hair would be greasy after. I read that really soft water doesn’t have enough minerals to pull the conditioner back out. But I’ve turned my softener down all the way and still have issues. I’m really not sure what to do! I didn’t start having these problems until I moved into my house 3 years ago. The only products I use on my hair are the aveda shampoo and it’s a 10 lite for heat protection. Any advice anyone could give me would be great!!!
Thank you Mell, sooo helpful! A Tipp for regular swimmers, when I go swimming and I don't have a chelating shampoo I use an apple cider vinegar rince on my hair and skin. I find when I do this I don't get that chlorine smell and my hair is light n soft.☺️
Who else is addicted to MELL’S videos? 🙋🏻♀️ I’ve been binging on them for days 🙄 I’ve laughed 😂, I’ve cried 😭, I’ve gone to Walmart and bought a bunch of Cantu products to feed my addiction. I need to build a new room on my house for all of my hair products 😬. I hope my husband doesn’t find my guilty secret out 🤫
Love the thumbnail!! Missed you mell! sending lots of love!! have a great day! Also do you have any tips about shrinkage when wearing a bonnet? Also please do a Q and A!!!
Hey Mady thank you!! Wishing you a fabulous day as well! A trick to prevent shrinkage is banding the hair, so essentially separating it into multiple polytails (i would use a silk scrunchy) and keep adding elastics down the hair strand :) or, a headscarf style to sleep wont condense and scrunch the curls as much :) hope that helps!! xoxo
Thank you a gazillion times. My hair was no longer curly. It was so annoying since I finally embraced it about ten years ago. Then...after watching this vid on hard water a light bulb went on for me at three in the morning. Of course, wouldn't want to just sleep all ight. Anyway I realized I was using purple shampoo and it was probably coating my hair too heavily. Wham bam..after clarifying three times my hair has moved back home. Oh!!! And that also explained why I couldn't use curlsmith shampoo. I have beautiful tasting rocky mountain water. It doesn't get much heavier. Thanks a ton, Hon.
What a thorough discussion on this topic... and I've been watching several, lol. Thank you! I was just about to order Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Shampoo, but you convinced me to try Un-do-goo instead :)
Thanks so much for this eye-opening video. I moved from Wisconsin to Florida and have tried everything to help my baby fine, thin, mostly 3A hair deal with the hard water here, with no results. It was a frizz bomb as soon as I walked outdoors. Thanks to this video, I tried pouring distilled water over my hair as a final rinse and my hair looks just as shiny, soft and normal as it used to look back in Wisconsin, though it is now more wavy than curly. I can't afford a whole house softener, so I'm buying a spray bottle to use distilled water. A tip for those who decide to get whole house water softening, be sure to start taking a trace mineral supplement, since our food is very short on minerals now, and most of us get the minerals we need from our drinking water. Great video.
I'd also like to request a video on how to deal with having several different types of hair on your head. The back of my hair is 3c, the top is 3a and the part in front of my ears is 2b. Is it possible to make it all look the same?
Absolutely love Mell’s channel! Have been watching her videos for so long now! I just started my own hair channel because of her! Thank you for inspiring me Mell 💕
Changing to a filtering showerhead was a game changer for me, there wasn't even that much mineral buildup before but now there's None and my curls are Living!
OK, so what exactly do you recommend for very soft water? I live in Greenville SC and here is what they say: Greenville Water is considered very soft with total hardness averaging less than 1 grain/gallon. Sooooo, do I need to do a clarify 1x per month? My hair is pretty dry, I just started going curly in April so I am just starting to really pay attention to ingredients, etc with hair products. Also, my hair is dyed....just another wrench to throw in there! Allergic to coconut and glycerin has a VERY bad effect on my hair.....By-the-way, I LOVE your channel!!
For us wavies who don't want clumps, but want soft, voluminous waves, do you have any product recomentations? I love it when my 2b hair naturally looks like I did a blow out and loose flat iron waves. That is my hair goal. 😊
That is a real problem, I moved from North of Mexico to North of Germany and experienced every single issue you mentioned in the video, it took me a while to realize this was all caused by hard water....
This is exactly what happened to my hair I got a shower filter & I did the Malibu hard water treatment and shampoo along with a protein treatment after & a good moisturizing routine & my hair already feels soo much better !! Thanks for all this help

So glad I found you! I struggle with my hair for a very long time and always treated it wrong. My mother has straight hair and didn't knew any better. Always wanted to grow my hair out again. Made a very big mistake during my teenage years (perm ... cough), but I always have to chop it off, when it's just about shoulder length. It's very fine and as I found out not long ago - natural curly. In my childhood I lived in a place with very soft water and now I live, were the water is very hard. 🙆🏻♀️
i have thick, low porosity 2c/3a hair. i have been struggling for years to find the right products. everything either weighs down my hair or makes it very frizzy. any drugstore/affordable product recommendations?
Water filters will filter out some minerals, but they DO NOT soften your water; you need an actual water softener for that. I got a water softner that you attach to the shower called "Waterstick". It's the only true shower water softner that I found. It's pricey, but I've had it for 2 months and I've found it to be well worth it as it took my SUPER hard water down to no hardness and made washing my hair so much better! I got a shower softener because I live in apartments, but if I had a house I would have invested in a house softener so that my clothes and dishes could get the same benefits.
This is the video I’ve been waiting for! I have hard water and been wondering what to do about it. I’ve been eyeing shower head filters but wasn’t sure which one or if that would make a positive difference. Thank you for this! ❤️
I absolutely loved this video, I used to lived in a house with very very hard water now that I moved the water is less hard but still high on iron and to top it all I live in canada, so winter and hard water ooohh boy
I'm in San Antonio, and even with a water softener I get gunky buildup from calcium. Once a month I put about (or aboot as you Canadians say) half a teaspoon of baking soda in my shampoo. It makes my hair sooooo soft and cleans all the gunk out.
Haters are gonna hate! Why did those 4 people didn't like your video? it is so informative!! ugh! Thank you for all the information provided. I have hard water and for almost a year I used rain water but then I got tired of washing my hair picking the water from a bucket. Now I'm thinking of buying a shower filter. Do you know of any that you can reccommend?
I moved to Lincolnshire UK the water there is horrible left a residue on everything 😢 My hair was wrecked ! So I moved back west the water is great this side of the country and women do have lovely locks around here .
I had a set back from using hard water my hair broke like chips finally after realizing it I use a filter now my hair is back to its healthy state curls popping not tangled on it's own easy to handle again not much frizz I felt like my hair was reborn 👏🏼👏🏼
Once again, Mell has shown up to SAVE US!!!!! I've sent sooo many people to her channel because of her informative videos and fun style! Thanks again Mel, hi to Amanda!
This video was just what I needed. I have been watching your videos trying to figure out what was going on with my daughter's hair. She has very dense and long low porosity 3a/3b curly hair that was dry and matted. I was shocked that I was able to brush through her tangles after using the Un Goo shampoo, and her hair accepted moisture from her hair mask. Thank you! And she can finally clean her scalp on her own with the scalp brush.
Thank you so much! I'd already watched this video, just as informative. But when my scalp was itchy, routines that had worked before did not, and the top of my head was heavy. It was a livesaver. My curls are back again, happy and defined. 😊🙏🏽
I'm half way the video and I had to: girl you are awesome! Love the light way you give information, you give it all but it feels easy. Good work and thank you!
Can you please do a video on what you need for a curly hair routine? Not like specific products but like the general things you would do in a week plus how many times you diffuse, etc.
The Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk shampoo, cleansing oil and conditioner contains two chelating ingredients (Disodium Edta and Citric Acid). All are sulfate free.
A chlorine filter for your shower is a necessity. Chlorine is no bueno for your skin and hair. It takes out dirt, other chemicals and some minerals also. For cleaning your faucets and shower head, you need Lime Away.
A small town where I live close by, the water is so hard just using the sink for one day will leave so muchhh white residue I was in shock. If i lived there I'd be using chelating shampoos every wash LOL
I watched this the day that you put it up and im so SO glad that you made this video!! I've been losing a ton of hair for the last month and a half, I was clairifying every single week but still have greasy looking hair with a ton of build up and it was just breaking like crazy. I came to the conclusion that it is our water and it has been happening slowly over a period of time. Without your video, I would have never known that I needed a chelating shampoo to remove the mineral build up. So a huge thank you to YOU MELL!! ❤❤ You saved my hairs!!
Great video! I live in a super hard water area (you can see the mineral deposits at the bottom of a glass of water) and we installed a shower head that removes limescale. It really has helped my hair a lot and saved the shower as well!

My hard water has sulfur in it, or so I was told, and has severely darkened my red hair. On top of that, we live on top of a gravel deposit, and since we only have well water, it is so bad ahhhh. Literally our shower is sorta a dark orange where the water continues to hit it. I am so thankful to have stumbled upon a video about waters, since I have a hard time finding videos about it.

Mell, you are amazing. I did not know if I had a hard water issue with my hair, as we have well water but use a water softener. However, I knew we are not always completely diligent about adding salt to the softener on time. I used the ION chelating shampoo, lathered and rinsed about 4-5 times to make sure I got every strand cleaned super well. Then I added my Olaplex conditioner and OMG. My hair feels so good. It feels so healthy today, I didn't even realize that hard water was contributing to my problem. My products went through my hair so much easier, I could actually comb my hair with my Denman brush without it getting caught. This was such a Godsend. Thank you for educating me on this!! I have learned so much about my curly hair. Every time someone asks me about my hair now or how I take care of it, I just tell them I learned everything I know from Mell. Thanks to you and Amanda for teaching me so much! I love you both
@Riya Sunny I never noticed any extra greasiness really. I just noticed when the softener would run out of salt because i could smell the difference in the water and my hair would feel unmanageable. I actually recently installed this shower filter thing that is AMAZING. it filters the water and my hair has felt soooo good ever since. The company is called Hydroviv.
@Riya Sunny I have both a softener and the shower filter. I have not noticed any greasiness at all, but I also didn't feel like my hair was greasy from the water softener. So I don't know, but if you are looking to remove the minerals from your hard water, I think that shower head filter will help.

My friend and I were just trying to figure this out! She moved to CO and the water parameters are far different than where I am. Thank you!
Mell you should totally do 1 on 1 virtual consulting! You're so knowledgable I just wanna know what you think is best for my hair 😩
Thank you!! ...now to convince my parents to get a water purifying system..
haha yas im so happy! Good luck convincing them!! In your pitch make sure the include how it will benefit them and the whole house, too! THE PIPES!!!
@@ManesByMell Yes of course!! I convinced my mom with your video and now it's about getting my dad on board by telling him how the appliances will benefit and they'll save money. Half way there!
For the meantime, buy distilled water and wash with it until you get the filter. A gallon of distilled water is like 1 dollar
I literally thought soft water and hard water was about the pressure of the water 😅
Haha same.
We still love you XD
Lmaoo same here😂😂
Hard water is a disaster for dry skin, finding a good shampoo is really a problem. Thank you for this video!
Water quality became so bad in my region for the last few years, so I became allergic to lots of skin products. And if you have a hard water and naturally dry skin, you should stay calm or your skin will be even worse.
I used to swim 3 times a week and that damaged my hair I stopped swimming now but I love the advice thanks 💓💓
Just changed my shower head to a filtered one and it made a huuuuuge difference on my hair and skin.
If you live in an area of hard water I would highly recommend a water softener, it also make the water taste better
They also make filters you can add to your shower that help with hard water! We added one for my husband(dry scalp)
His flakes are almost gone 🤷🏻♀️
Ive never had issues with hard water(that I know of) so Im not fully sure
I put a shower filter on mine and tested the tds. It was the same amount of sediments with the filter vs without.
There are shower filter you can use. They like 25 bucks.
@@monicamadrigalbeckford4281 install RO or use distill water
I noticed my hair and skin were so bad after moving to where i live now. I don't remember where I saw it recommended, but i got a filteres showerhead. Changed my life. I can tell when I forget to change the filter out because my skin and hair dry out so bad. When I remember to change it though my skin and hair feel amazing and are so easy to keep clean and balanced.
Mell, you are always so delightful to watch! Thank you so much for the explanation!
Did you see Mell's refresh videos?
I kept running into the same problem. Neither pineapple nor the bonnet method worked for my long hair. I attributed it to the fact that I have more of a wave than a curl, and because my hair is quite heavy it easily loses its shape overnight. The only thing that really works for me is refreshing with a little water and I just make sure to sleep on a silk pillowcase and gather my hair in a loose bun or pony, accepting the fact that it'll be a limp, clumpy mess in the morning lol It takes a little trial and error to figure out what works for each of us in the end.
Hey Georgia! I'll link Mell's refresh video for you: ua-cam.com/video/WljidC54MbY/v-deo.html
At 8:45 she says that sometimes she smoothes out frizz with a little bit of product (I use a very light leave in conditioner to avoid weighing my hair down) diluted with wet hands.
I hope my husband doesn’t find my guilty secret out 🤫
I live in San Antonio so I bought a shower filter for the hard water here. My hubby thought I was crazy, now he loves it.
I use a filter in my shower. They last a long time. Thanks Mell...Great content!❤️
Love the thumbnail!! Missed you mell! sending lots of love!! have a great day! Also do you have any tips about shrinkage when wearing a bonnet? Also please do a Q and A!!!
Hey Mady thank you!! Wishing you a fabulous day as well! A trick to prevent shrinkage is banding the hair, so essentially separating it into multiple polytails (i would use a silk scrunchy) and keep adding elastics down the hair strand :) or, a headscarf style to sleep wont condense and scrunch the curls as much :) hope that helps!! xoxo
She is so cute, her videos never get boring
Agree wholeheartedly! If someone’s on a budget use Garnier’s Clarifying Shampoo and Dove’s Repair Conditioner. You’re hair will be soft and silky.
Thank you for doing this! I kept bugging you for a hard water vs soft water explanation, and you did great.
Excellent explanation.
I swear you get better and better with every video. Great factual info and solutions presented in a very entertaining way! I love the seesters
Wow that really means a lot thank you so much❤️❤️❤️
Thank you a gazillion times.
I'm so honoured omg!! My greatest tip is to be real, always be yourself
Changing to a filtering showerhead was a game changer for me, there wasn't even that much mineral buildup before but now there's None and my curls are Living!
Brand of shower filter?
OK, so what exactly do you recommend for very soft water? I live in Greenville SC and here is what they say: Greenville Water is considered very soft with total hardness averaging less than 1 grain/gallon. Sooooo, do I need to do a clarify 1x per month? My hair is pretty dry, I just started going curly in April so I am just starting to really pay attention to ingredients, etc with hair products. Also, my hair is dyed....just another wrench to throw in there! Allergic to coconut and glycerin has a VERY bad effect on my hair.....By-the-way, I LOVE your channel!!
Thank you! I finally learned why my hair was so brittle, dull, rough
For us wavies who don't want clumps, but want soft, voluminous waves, do you have any product recomentations?
I love it when my 2b hair naturally looks like I did a blow out and loose flat iron waves. That is my hair goal.
😊
Loved this video!! Once I started using a chelating shampoo, my whole hair life changed. Preach to 'em, Mel!!
Is soft water better or a shower filter? I have soft water but I can’t find info. on if that’s the same as having a filter on my shower 😢
Shower filter will make your water even more soft
I don't think you need to do anything, just normal shower head :)
That is a real problem, I moved from North of Mexico to North of Germany and experienced every single issue you mentioned in the video, it took me a while to realize this was all caused by hard water....
Heyy mell! I would love an after pool/beach routine for that nappy hair you get after the weekend at the beach!!!!!
You are very good and very gracious. God bless you beautiful young lady. Your hair looks great. Thank you for your research and contributon. Amen!
This is exactly what happened to my hair
I got a shower filter
& I did the Malibu hard water treatment and shampoo
along with a protein treatment after
& a good moisturizing routine
& my hair already feels soo much better !!
Thanks for all this help
How’s it been going? I never heard of the malibu
@@sereneserenity1945 are you still doing Malibu treatments? I’m on the fence about them.
@@sereneserenity1945it seems you either love or hate the Malibu scalp treatments. The instructions are not what you’d expect, so that might be why some people are unhappy with their results.

@Galatea I can't find any that are named Waterstick. Do you have a link?
Wooooooaaaaaaooooooooowww. I actually learned something. My water must be super hard from the feel of my hair and my crazy skin😭
I moved to Lincolnshire UK the water there is horrible left a residue on everything 😢
My hair was wrecked !
Thank you so much for the love and support! 🥰🥰🥰
Let’s all give an applause for Mell Brains!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Thank you Mell for being so smart and educated on hair. You’re saving our lovely curls!
I'm pretty sure this is why I struggle with my hair so much. I've heard the water is fairly hard where I am. Sigh. Just another thing to deal with 😕
This video was just what I needed.
This is very informative. I live in Tampa and always wonder why my hair is so frizzy and brassy but now I know why! Thank you Mel!
THIS is the video I've needed for the last year. THANK YOU for putting the effort into this! You're the best!
Ah so that’s why my hair is stiff and my scalp is irritated whenever I don’t use soft water. Thanks for the explanation!!

I am so thankful to have stumbled upon a video about waters, since I have a hard time finding videos about it.
you have lovely personality and fun to watch . thank you for all the explanation while entertaining us
We need a video of lightweight hair products! 💜
Malibu for hard water works pretty good too.
Thank you so much for these curly hair tips! I'm currently on my journey to take better care of my curly/wavy hair because my parents couldn't teach me, but it's curly hair gurus like you that help me on this journey for better hair😊thank you again!😁💕
@Riya Sunny yeah I hope it works for you!
This is going to be so helpful! I'm thinking about getting a filter on Amazon.
Is water filtered through a Brita as good as distilled water for my curls?
I’m glad to see you back! I completely understand why you took Tuesday off. So excited for this video because I live in southeast Georgia and have hard water with my house having 3 water softener filters attached. So many curlies don’t do videos about hard water.
