      @@rickrouse7865 With the testing circumstances shown, machine pistols have low damage and low AP overall. Results may vary against heavier hitting weapons as they have a nasty tendency to rip out vital organs and incapacitate or kill pawns with a single bullet or two INSTANTLY rather than putting them into pain shock with the machine pistol. Higher armor values are always going to be better when it comes against weapons such as the charge lance since they have such high AP.

      @@rickrouse7865 I've had enough guys get their limbs ripped off by lances enough times to know that I game is what matters, but the testing shown was with low power weaponry. Oftentimes that's not the case. Pit those same fighters against each other with assault rifles, heavy SMGs or lances and higher base armor values will win. Machine pistols can't even remove fingers but they will down with bruises. You can test it yourself with dev mode, or perish on your play throughs.

    It's worth pointing out that by using machine pistols with their very low AP you have advantaged having more layers of lower armor vs fewer layers of higher armor. Against higher APs (which are more common), the loadouts with fewer layers & higher armor will be less affected and so outperform the loadouts they're equivalent to at lower APs

    Don´t throw away the flak pants yet, it still outperforms devilstrand pants in terms of sharp protection, you´ll need hyperweave or thrumbofur to retire the flak pants. Keep in mind that growing devilstrand is a long term investment and far more expensive than steel.

    • @adairschannel7502

      flak pants give a movement speed debuff while only protecting legs, which are less important than the torso as no shot to the leg will ever kill a colonist, only down him/her. losing a leg just incentivizes you to replace it with a better prosthetic down the line. plus i'd say its easier to grow devilstrand at large scale rather than getting the required amount of steel and cloth for flak pants. but still, you make points worth considering.

    Few things you got wrong. After first damage reducing roll damage becomes blunt. That means that on skin layer it is best to have high blunt damage resistance. Hyperweave is best material for shirt and pants. Also when it comes to flak pants they cover skin and middle, but there is nothing that can be used together with pants that covers middle part only. So flak pants are still great for combo with duster and only thing that is better are hyperweave pants. Thrumbo fur pants are also great and it is mater of choice what is more important to you higher speed and sharp armor or higher blunt armor.

    • @StybbGaming
      @StybbGaming  2 роки тому +2

      The whole blunt damage thing is relying on your first layer actually reducing damage, if it doesn't I believe the damage stays as sharp through to the extra layers, so with clothing armour it's more likely you will still need sharp too. Totally agree about the other materials too!

    • @skyrask1948
      @skyrask1948 2 роки тому

      @@StybbGaming Yes it stays as sharp, that is why i said damage reducing roll in sense that damage is reduced once. For torso with duster and flak vest blunt armor is more useful on skin layer.

    • @frightenedfreddie
      @frightenedfreddie 2 роки тому +4

      Not entirely correct. If damage is mitigated by armour the damage the pawn receives is converted to blunt but still uses the sharp armour value for inner layers for determining if damage is further mitigated on deflected.

  • @Laireso
    @Laireso Рік тому +1

    It's funny you said devilstrand wins against flak and showed 50/50 scenario. I agree it's better on paper, but Devilstrand is not a small commitment compared to flak. The jacket is pointless, but the pants, helmet and torso are good. Devilstrand is not considerably better than Heavy fur which you have access to in most biomes and if you start farming it early. Similar protection offer Bearskin, Wolf fur and Rhino leather so even Ice Sheet should have a Bear spawn every now and then for you to gain good material for dusters.
    There is more layers to this than just raw effectiveness though. Devilstrand is among the most expensive clothing material not just from growing standpoint, but the increase in wealth to your colony cannot be ignored. Devilstrand colony will be dealing on average with larger raids than a flak colony, so 1 on 1 comparison isn't truly fair.
    On top of that you have to weigh in the requirements of devilstrand.
    - Dedicated gardener with 10 growing.
    - Researched Devilstrand.
    - Suitable large area ideally enclosed and powered by sunlamps to ensure first harvest won't die to a climate change.
    - Power for sunlamps, more steel and comps spent on power.
    Not every colony can afford this time and resource commitment even in mid game. Plate armor is less flexible, but for a killbox actually ideal. Simple helmets are too expensive for what little they provide especially due to low lvl crafting at this stage, but protecting the brain is important to me so if I couldn't get my hands on recon+ helmet I'd make uranium/steel flak helmets and hopefully I have at least 10 crafting to get some decent quality ones.
    IMO it's just easier to get steel from traders than invest into the devilstrand. If you just hunt big animals with desirable leather instead of going for Devilstrand you save a ton of time you can put into more defenses, combat skills, etc. that each have a noticeable effect in a real scenario. Devilstrand feels like the late-game content for me. I'd much rather compare flak vest+duster to the plate armor, which a few of at high quality can be very useful for the usual raids, animal manhunters and infestations. Losing arms and legs in late-game doesn't matter much, but in early to mid-game prosthetic replacements are simply not good enough to be worth the components and time. Plate armor you need to equip on/off, but you'd only have your best or melee pawns wear them and before Recon/Marine you shouldn't be getting the mechanoid drop pod raids which are undoubtedly the main weakness of this armor. I feel like that would be a lot more interesting discussion.
    It boils down to what you find most important on a pawn, their arms/legs or their torso. For survival torso, but losing arm in early-game turns pawn from amazing burning passion crafter into dedicated janitor. Not to mention you can harvest organs from the start so getting kidney or lung destroyed is not nearly as bad as losing an arm. Now surely if heart, stomach or liver takes the hit from high caliber gun it's game over, but one could argue it's for the best as you can preserve their body and revive them later on rather than having just another janitor that can't do anything worthwhile for the next 2-3 years before you reach bionics. Surely for less important pawns the difference is minuscule, but for the good pawns I'd say plate armor is a pretty good deal.

  • @pavelperina7629
    @pavelperina7629 Рік тому +2

    I miss recon armor in the comparison. Also flak vests are very useful - not only it is good body armor, but colonists can live with bionic (and even missing) limbs. They won't be happy with major scars on torso (and they won't care with mangled brain scars). And there is other factor against some armor - it slows colonists down - reduce moving speed of ten colonists by 30% and you have efficiency of seven colonists feeding ten colonists. Now you need 15 colonists feeding ten colonists to restore productivity (provided that they spend most of the productive time walking). Increasing number of colonist and base wealth using marine armor on each of them increases raid size. Well, you can have army of wolves to do hauling, but I feel that this game has constant difficulty no matter what you do if you avoid doing fatal mistakes (in this case you don't need to care about marine armor, you won't get that far).
    And in long term I think devilstrand is renewable resource, while steel is PITA to get in later game - it's inefficient to haul it from the most distant corner of the map and to refuel generator there. It's likely better to craft 4 granite statues and buy steel than to deep drill 800 units of it.

    Actualy Armour mechanic work a litle bit strange it's feels like if somethnig can penetrate cataphract armor it's mean that your skin layer and Armorskin gland will not help you at all .
    for example legendery cataphract armor have around 200% sharp armor 200%-100%(role between 0-100)%-45%(weapon penetcration percent for charge lance)= 145 shot role it's mean your will get half damage then damage goes to the nex layer (skin) BUT important thing is enemy role stil is 145% and you just don't have type of skin clothing that have so much defens

      About what you found strange, it actually makes a lot of sense in real life, a projectile to go through material it needs to "expend" a part of its strength/force, every subsequent layer that a projectile needs to go through has a higher chance than the previous one to stop or deflect it, so a "bullet" passing through a cataphract armor only sto be stopped by thrumbo fur shirt makers sense as the cataphract armor "slowed" down the bullet so much

  • @EnlonWhite
    @EnlonWhite 6 місяців тому

    I know this is an older post, But thing to consider if using vanilla or even mods.
    I have over 3000 hours in Rimworld, use over 300 mods, and I dont use mods that add too much power either end (enemy or mine).
    First-Armor value caps at 200% (vanilla) for good reason, if you can even reach those values.
    With this cap in mind, there is only so much you can get from quality and material until hit the cap or soft caps.
    Second- Even the best end game helmet only provids about a 7% chance average of keeping the pawn alive and not useless from injury. (deflected shots from strong weapons usually still kills/ or at least brain damages them).
    Remove any head shots from your equation to truely test what your trying. Remember a deflect shot still does damage which based on end game helmets only doubles the chance of the Pawn "living" though if brain damage that bed ridden's them is living if you want to consider it that way. (we are using General weapons of ones that have at least 30-35% Armor pen and do about 15 damage or more. Its the head HP vs damage dealt even if halved from partial block that is the issue.
    Third- I cant remeber how multiple layers are calculated Vanilla but,
    If on multiple Layers it rerolls the attack per Layer, then they are slightly better at the very least, depends on how Armor pen is applied per layer (flat same each time, or lessened by previous layer.)
    Usually without mods, armor pen is applied I believe same each layer. So if you have 50% armor PEN, then each layer is reduced by 50%, most clothing is very low on the underlayers.
    If this Armor Pen math is wrong then yes Layers are slightly better.
    but general rule, lower Armor pen on attack better to have layers, usually.
    Fourth- its better to equip an Elite group of combat fighters, then spam the easiest next best to pawns in general unless you can manage the costs. Several times, "Just good enough" is usually more than needed in a situation.
    (Helmets are a needed evil due to in cost vs protection)
    Generally due to vanilla combat too RNG (look it up on skill of pawns), I use mods that make ALL pawns (yes even enemies) more accurate with skill levels in shooting, and melee more deadly. This makes strong armor more important, and tactics more plausible (aka less need for kill boxing til late game).
    oh and Embrasures, cause its stupid not to build your own cover that was proven so much in our past as useful, not hard to achieve, and very much makes a defender more capable against larger numbers.
    Using mods.
    I had it so that layers reduces armor pen by about half each layer it applied too, and rerolled its attack using new value. However most flak Jackets could get about 143% at average at best, with the other layer not as high (Vest were either lower, or this value with the jacket less)
    Clothing at the third layer was still usually never above 80%. Remember materials had different difficulty in how to get more of them.
    I could get Power armor, and any armor that took outer and middle layer could reach about 187% at Masterwork, meaning legendary would hit that 200% or close sometimes.
    And the mods I used had them apply this armor (at a reduced amount) to both Outer layer and next layer down, (you could only wear cloths basically under them.)
    So power armor, recon armor, and other that did double layer were slightly better overall but cost more in general to make. Materials used made more of a difference on them.
    Oh and the mid to end game helmets had a buff to armor. (Any helmet that is less than 125% armor was not really worth it to save the pawn.)

      Helmets are a must, a simple helmet outclass any fabric headgear of the same quality, so stronger the helmet the better it is, the best would be the legendary cataphract helmet
