In my opinion, the Nutrient Paste Dispenser is the best item in all of Rimworld. Not only can it be a great tool for beginner players, intermediate and advanced Rimworld players can also benefit from its strengths!
Not only will a nutrient paste dispenser free one of your colonists from the task of cooking, allowing you to get a lot more done early in the game -- such as researching, construction, tailoring, crafting, etc. -- but also, nutrient paste will last longer than any other source of food! If you're having trouble surviving in a more difficult biome, like ice sheet or extreme desert, a nutrient paste dispenser may just be your solution!

I have this one colonist who used to be one of the best in combat, and had so many other great skills, until one day when she got severe brain damage when a pirate shot her in the head, so now her consciousness is capped at 50% and now she just cleans most of the time, since she can't do anything else efficiently anymore. it's tragic, but anyway. whenever she got food poisoning, it was enough to incapacitate her and I'd always have to have another colonist carry her to bed and she couldn't get up until she recovered. long story short, nutrient paste is a godsend

hey I'd like to just give you a tip for cooking efficiently. Make small 1x1 critical stockpiles for your cooking igredients next to the stove, set the stove to drop on floor and lower ingredient radius to encompass only your mini stockpiles. It's crazy how quickly they will cook - the cooks waste around 50-80% of their time just hauling ingredients. You can get away with having a single cook cooking for 10-20 people like this easily. New trick/exploit/bug: while hoppers won't accept processed meals in their configuration, if you can somehow make a nutrient paste meal fall on it, you can use the dispenser to create paste from the meal which lists only "nutrient paste" as its ingredient. In other words, by making food go through the dispenser a second time, you can mask its origin. I stumbled upon this bug by producing so much paste using the draft trick that some of it got on a hopper.
I haven't had the time to test it out since I discovered this trick, but I suspect it might also be possible to make nutrient paste from pemmican or kibble this way which would make food production even more efficient.

It is, indeed, very convenient, but Rimworld is, first of all, a story telling game. Which means the deeper you immerse and roleplay every aspect of it, the more fun you get from it. At least, that's how it works for me and to those people who I discussed the game with. However, in my opinion, the paste dispenser only fits in scenarios where your colony is located in very harsh conditions, where food is scarce and time and working hands are valuable, or for prisoners, who may not deserve getting good food. I think that my colonists, if they had free will, would prefer cooking meals for themselves, even if they completely suck at cooking, rather than eat the slimey goo, while there is raw meat and crops it is made of. Imagine yourself on the rim. You hunt down a doe and you butcher it. There is that fireplace you made back when you were spending your first days on the planet. Would you go to the trouble of constructing a complex machine that would make disgusting gel for you to eat? or you would just roast that steak over the fire? What I wanted to tell is, don't treat your colonists like robots. They work hard for the colony to thrive and they deserve only the best you can give them.

Honestly, I'd prefer the nutrient paste. If I'm not a professional hunter or cook, I can't trust myself to make proper meals. I could scientifically reason that if I heat it up enough, the infections in it will die, but what parts should I cook? What's safe on the animal? What if the animal has some sort of disease that affects the meat, cooked or not? I know, however, that the nutrient paste dispenser will process all the raw meat and output only pure, safe nutrients that I can trust in this life-or-death world. I'd personally feel a lot more comfortable with a nutrient paste dispenser.

If you compare "ate awful meal" debuff to "ate raw food", the difference is less than half, so it is safe to assume it is similar in taste to less-than-half-cooked food. You definitely have a good point when it comes to colonist efficiency in the early game, but I'll still take my pro chefs cooking fine meals over nutrient slop any day of the week. There is nothing more frustrating than colonists frequently getting break risks, and every little thing you sacrifice for the sake of efficiency puts them one step closer to the edge. Meanwhile, because the difficulty of rimworld scales with your wealth, there's nothing actually inherintly wrong with taking things slow and making sure that all of your colonists are happy, and getting constant go/shoot frenzies and inspired recruit/creativity is extremely satisfying.
When you're doing a challenge though, or for tough early games, you make a good point.

The net mood difference is far more than -4, as you have to factor in the opportunity cost of NOT eating a fine/lavish meal, which gives a mood boost. So more realistically, you are looking at closer to -8 mood loss for going the food paste route.
Though by that same token, labor savings are even more impressive than simply not needing a cook. As you need 40% less food, that means 40% less time spent planting/harvesting. But even that has a hidden savings. 40% less crops means a smaller base is needed. That means less time spent running back and forth, though that might be eaten up by the need for larger bedrooms to account for the mood buffs. Or you could use all that free labor to make a colony of artists and line the bedroom walls with statues.
Or go the truly Rimworld route and have a colony of acetic psychopath cannibals. Your pawns will have nothing but free time as they wander around full of human murder-eating joy.

Another hidden benefit along the already impressive list of benefits for NP that you mentioned: needing less food and therefore a smaller base also means it helps keep your wealth down, which means raids and other disasters are just a bit smaller.
I try to have one very big and luxurious barracks/dining room/rec room, which means the investments i make in prettying that up have a return on investment on three fronts. Sure, even modest single bedrooms are nicer than a super fancy barracks, but they add a lot to wealth (which means higher expectations and bigger raids) and base size (which means more walking and therefore lower efficiency).
Combine that with a couple of stacks of lavish meals and fine cannibal meals, and you have a very efficient colony with a good food backup in case of a solar flare, and some strong mood buffs that are very easy to unlock.

If you set up your stock piles correctly, a cook will spend very little time making food. Here's how to set it up. Look at your number pad, if the stove is occupying 789 then the cook will stand (sit put a chair there) at 5. Your vegetable stock pile would go on 4 and 1, while meat would go 6 and 3. Critical prioritize those for haulers to keep filled. Put a stool in 4163 and maybe 5 if you can't put a better quality chair there (the 5 slot is least important). With the stools in the stock pile, the cook won't budge a smegging inch when making food. Set him to take the food to the nearest stockpile (5 and 2 on minimum priority so he drops it on the ground, but it counts as made for keeping x meals in stock). The haulers will bring raw food to the cook and haul meals back to the freezer.
Yes, you deal with food poisoning, but this can be almost completely eliminated on even a skill 1 cook by having him clean before cooking (set cleaning as a lower number than cooking in management page). Early on, just use vegetable stock piles and make simple meals. Convert one side to meat as needed.
The whole trick to making meals efficient is in the stock piles with stools so the pawn doesn't move when cooking and cleanliness of the food prep area. Even a low skill cook with a hauler can make enough food for a large colony to eat for the next month easily with 1 day of work and you don't get the -4 mood for nutrient paste which I love using to feed animals and prisoners for most of the reasons you list, especially the mystery meat. Animals won't care and screw the prisoners. This is a great way of corpse disposal if your cook is a psychopath or cannibal, or you put some flowers around to counter the butchered human debuff and a great source of human leather for very nice clothes for a mood buff for the colonists. Weird that they don't like butchering or eating people, but they love wearing them...

You wrote all that and the dispenser is just.
Power it, fill hopper, food forever.

    • @skavies2351
      @skavies2351 5 років тому +2

@@Nathankinamorh I have no clue what you mean by raider defense unless you are talking about food poisoning. Food poisoning is much less about the cook's skill than it is about how clean the environment is. A high skill cook will negate the chance of food poisoning if you are cooking in a very dirty place, but if you keep it very clean, the base chance is so low you don't need skill to be reasonably safe. As an added benefit, your pawns won't be getting dirty environment mood penalties. Get cooking before the first raid, and even a skill 1 no passion will be outside the food poisoning range for a clean kitchen before raid 2. The first 2 raids are pretty well set scripted events that are very predictable even with Randy on extreme.
Oh, and something even most "pros" at this forget is to not let a low level cook butcher then cook without forcing them to clean up between butchering and cooking even if they do use proper clean kitchen/storage tactics and the stock piles.
      Clean Kitchen tactics:
      1. No hunting while the cook is working, they will track in dirt to the freezer/food storage area making a mess. (no pawns in or out of the kitchen/freezer area)
      2. If you can, lock out the other colonists so they don't enter the freezer or kitchen while the cook is working. If you want to make a lot of meals, lock the hauler in with the cook, no one in or out of the kitchen while cooking.
      3. Put the stove in the dam freezer early on., It makes keeping the important things clean much easier, and the speed penalty for cold environment is not that bad until you are trying to feed 20+ colonists, but by then your cook can make safe food in the basement of an outhouse.
      4. Floor the freezer (and kitchen and every space between them if you ignored #3) before you cook anything.

I remember in earlier builds I wasn't the biggest fan of the Nutrient paste dispenser purely because of its mood debuff. I believe it used to be higher or there was less you could do to counter it. But in later builds, I became more and more of a fan of it purely because of how efficient it is.
Even if you do specialize into a cook, that cook becomes a crutch for the colony. If the cook goes down, gets killed, or otherwise goes insane, the entire colony suffers from it. When a paste dispenser goes down, it's not that hard to get it back up and running. Just about anyone can fix it or build it. And it's not terribly expensive to build. If your colony lacks the steel or components to build one, then the colony likely lacks resources to build everything, not just the dispenser.

Sure, the NPD is efficient and has a lot of advantages, but it's not exactly fun, immersive, realistic or challenging to make your colony so ultra-efficient. I play RimWorld for the realism and immersion in the story and to me, a rag-tag group of survivors would have a cook. I like to make fancy restaurants with a dedicated kitchen and freezers for the raw ingredients where they serve various different foods with Vegetable Garden.

Most vegetables will last a couple months indoors and roofed, so there's no need to freezer your NPD.
I like putting one in the prisoner room so they can access it and putting human meat in it. This is both fun and very profitable for the experience you will get, and the potential for exp gain abuse is beyond retarded amounts.
To fully abuse the upset prisoners experience farm, you need to cause as many mental breaks for the prisoners as possible. They should always be either in catharsis and slowly moving towards rebellion, or out of catharsis and almost instantly rebelling. To do this, follow these steps.
    1. Your prison should be no more than a 4x4 area with no floor. The smaller the better, but you also have to have prisoners in it. several 2x2 areas are the best, but take a lot of micro management, so I usually make a 4x4 and call it close enough. a 1x2 is not a shared bedroom, so don't do it.
    2. Put a corpse stockpile in it and fill it with corpses. Every square.
    3. Remove the stockpile zone and forbid the corpses so they don't get moved.
    4. Fill the room with sleeping spots, not beds, so they sleep on the ground in the mud on the corpses of their friends.
    5. Either do the easy feed them human meat from nutrient paste dispenser, or feed them human corpses, un butchered of course.
    6. No lights, and minimal temperature control so they are uncomfortable.
    7. No tables or chairs or fun of any kind. You don't have room, and you want their mood to constantly be falling as fast as possible.
    8. Turn off home zone for the floors, but not the walls of the prison room(s), you don't want to clean them ever.
So, what does all this have to do with an experience farm? (I'm going to ignore Doctors for now, they will gain more experience than everyone else combined and it's a long and involved process that will be detailed below.
    1. All the jailbreaks give combat experience for anyone putting them back down with mini guns, clubs, chain shot guns, whatever. The odds of killing a prisoner instead of downing them is super small, so use anything short of a devastator rocket launcher because that will cause too much damage to your base (but it too will usually down, not kill them).
    2. All the mental breaks cause damage to walls doors and stuff for the constructors to repair with usually not needing materials (except for all the broken doors) giving construction experience.
    3. The terrible living conditions makes recruitment very hard, so your warden will get several times more social experience for doing their job than they normally would. Capture EVERYONE and reduce their resistance, but only recruit who you want. Release anyone you don't want when they get 0 resistance. This is the main reason to do this, doctor experience is the other reason.
On to doctors. Besides the obvious all the injuries to prisoners and colonists they patch up for a decent boost to xp, this is a super small fraction of what they will get doing surgery on the prisoners you don't want to recruit. Normally there's a problem with doing this because of accidents killing "Innocent Prisoners" giving a massive mood penalty to your colonists when an innocent prisoner dies. After a jailbreak, there's a several hour timer of guilty tag applied to the prisoner(s) involved where you can risk the accidental death with a minimal mood penalty since they aren't innocent any more. This is when you replace limbs with logs which lowers the danger of further jailbreaks to your colonists and gives a HUGE boost to the medical experience. One surgery will max out the daily learning of a doctor. With enough patients, you can easily go from level 0 to level 8 doctor in 1 day despite the exp loss after the first surgery. There's that much experience in this. After replacing as much as possible with wood parts, you can also remove any duplicate organs. Again, do not do experimental surgery on prisoners you want to recruit, this is for the crappy ones you don't want, unless of course you are at the stage where you are doing bionics for your colonists, then by all means practice away since you can replace the wood with better parts later.
A quick side note on beds. Hospital beds are not needed, ever. A wooden bed 2 quality levels over the hospital bed gives the exact same bonuses, and these are only there to help low skill doctors not screw up surgeries. Your doctors should easily hit 98% chance mark of successful surgeries in the dark, on the ground and in dirty environment since they are practicing there and gaining beyond ridiculous amounts of experience. Once they hit that magic 98% mark, it gives no further bonus to be in a well lit air conditioned hospital room with legendary medical beds and vitals monitors. Sterile tiles do help with reduced infection chances though, so your hospital should include a sleeping spot on sterile tiles with some nice art so the colonist is comfortable. Anything beyond that is unnecessary.
