Sundays with Tim is a great habit to pick up. Each time I think about being young and choosing smith work and not choosing a life of welder/fabricator/machinist it really makes me wonder.
Thanks for watching my friend.
@@BIGDOGFORGE I sure do like ya bud.
Amazing patterns. This video could have been an hour long and I'd still have watched it all. thanks Tim, stay safe. :-)
Glad you enjoyed it
Haha just became a foster parent to a1.5 year old, she was all fussy and i put you on and said let's sit down and watch uncle Tim forge... not a peep out of her for 15 min. Great video brother, thank you for sharing.
Glad to help out. Thanks for watching.
@@BIGDOGFORGE I watch all of your stuff, I'm a huge fan! I guess I should comment more but... sorry I'll double my Efforts. Thanks again.
That plysteel looks like wood. Definitely love it.
1.1k thumbs up, 0 thumbs down. This is a record from my viewing experiences, you should be proud. Wonderful video with lots of great info and insight.
I watched this two years after you posted this video. I’ve always been really impressed with the style of your content.
Thanks Big Dog Forge!
..Molten lava hitting the water and layering upon itself captured in steel. Well done sir...!!
Thanks and thanks for watching.
Great work Tim! Hope you are well my friend :-)
I am doing well my friend and I hope you and the family are doing well.
Thanks for watching my friend
That pattern looks like a piece of wood. That would have a lot of uses. Excellently done sir.
Thanks 👍

I chuckled on that. Whatever he said is true. 😊😊😊
That made me laugh aswell
It's incredible to think that, almost two hundred years ago, smiths could produce something that beautiful. It makes me wonder how many "trade secrets" have been lost to time or simply being "common knowledge" in the trade and so were never written down.
Thanks for watching
Thank you, thank you, for doing some rusty damascus. I have been gifted some old saw blades, and this is a great application to add beauty to other projects with accent damascus steel.
Man that's absolutely beautiful. It looks like wood.
Thank you very much!
That's a good looking chunk of steel there.
that pattern is amazing . i've always loved great wood grain and that grain look is just ... wow .
Thanks 👍
Never would have guessed you would have gotten that pattern from so many layers, let alone what the layers were made of! Beautimous!
Was thinking the same thing. With so many layers you start losing the contrast. It starts to look like the edge of a book with a very fine grain.
After enough folding, it becomes counter intuitive. Look up damascus steels that are over 100,000 layers. They have some good patterns in them.
I haven't heard the word beautimous since I was a teen in the 90s. 😃
Looks like a deep wood grain. Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm not a blacksmith or a knife maker but I think the pattern in that piece of steel makes me think it would be fun to learn both. I would also like to make some plane irons, chisels and some marking knives out of it. Great video man.
Gosh Tim what a journey to make beautiful steel in the old ways! Such a very special man and more over friend and brother you are.
Thank you for being you
🙏blessings abundant sirSir
Crawford out 🧙♂️
Thank you so much my friend, and thanks for watching.
I've been waiting to see this video and see the pattern on the steel. WOW! Just beautiful. Who would have ever thought you would be able to achieve that look out of a bunch of rusty steel. Really glad you did this experiment Tim. It should have taught a lot of people a lot about damascus that is contrary to everything they thought. Great work as usual. Thanks for bringing us along.
Thanks Jim and thanks for watching my friend.
Looks like a beautiful wood grain!
Wow...the pattern's like some of the old cris and spear i've seen...👍👍👍👍👍
That is a gorgeous billet , Tim! Lot of work, Thanks for sharing it with us!
Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful Damascus surprised at how little the end product was compared to the amount of material used to start.
I know, right?
That pattern looks very familiar. Very shotgun barrel like imo.
Great job!
Beautiful pattern! Looks better than my Damascus for sure..lol..
Looks great, like wood grain obviously, but it also made me think of flowing river water.
Thanks for watching lunkydog.
I personally like the longer videos.
I could listen to you talk about this sort of thing for days, if I'm honest.
Well Tim, I must say that you did a great job on that Damascus steel there. I would have loved to have seen that turned into a knife blade. Great job sir!
That's a lovely pattern. it looks "natural" like grains running through a plank of wood.
That turned out amazing!!! It’ll be cool to see you give it a coffee bath for the chatoyant look it has with the amount of layers and the twist!
Hope you and your family are doing well!
Thank you so much for your service and everyone else that has been a hero for our freedom! Those who lost their lives for our country will never be forgotten!
🙏
Its good to see you Phillip I hope your doing well.
And thanks for watching.
Super looking Tim. Beautiful pattern. Great job I'm jealous.

Hey Tim. Beautiful piece of steel. Peace and love
Thank you my friend take care and be safe.
You'll never hear me complain about a long video. In fact I would welcome much longer videos. :)
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Happy to see a fresh upload...got concerned when I didn't see one last week. I always enjoy your Sunday come to meetin' videos
Thanks Mark
That turned out to be a Beautiful Billet !!
That is some fascinating history and applied knowledge from the past. Thank you very much for sharing it!
Glad you enjoyed it
That's a great looking piece of metal for a knife!!! Great job sir!!!
That particular pattern reminds me more like flowing gasses, or liquids, similar to the paintings of Jupiter's supposed atmosphere.
Very cool. So much time spent cleaning steel to stop inclusions and delamination, and here we are with some beautiful wood grain Damascus from rusty steel...
Well said!
It has a wood grain look to it with knots
So beautiful, my friend, make it a beautiful knife
Thank you so much my friend. And thanks for watching
@@BIGDOGFORGE I especially like the way you create damacus striae from but scrap. Hope to see them more
Beautiful work man . Always a pleasure to watch !
Thanks so much for watching.
That's gorgeous Tim
Thank you sir and thanks for watching
Beautiful pattern
Again, another awsom pattern. It makes me want to try the cast iron and borax between steel for Damascus.
Give it a shot could be fun. thanks for watching.
That’s really fascinating! Kind of goes against a lot of things that people say these days. Loved the video, and the pattern looks awesome! Keep it up!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Liam truely does. I suspect the cast iron combines w the iron oxides in a molecular fashion that perhaps doesn't occur in a lower carbon higher alloyed steel cant.
Very fascinating. Both in practice and in theory.
Neat ole pattern too!
Thanks to Big Dog for leading us down a rabbit trail some 200 yrs old. Awesome man in person as much ad on video
🙏blessed days sirSir
Crawford out 🧙♂️

Thanks for watching.
that is cool it reminds me of wood grain
Great to see somebody work off a historic document like that, and bring it some life. Such an amazing pattern on that Billet! Great work Tim
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Its great to see you prove how it works
Thanks and thanks for watching
I really like the patterns, kinda looks like marble, woodish really nice
That was an awesome video Tim. I've not seen cast iron powder used as a flux, great idea really. The billet turned out really nice. Thanks for sharing.
That turned out beautiful!
Thanks and thanks for watching my friend.
Awesome stuff, I've been powdering cast iron to use for this, I'm a amature maker with a love for damascus forging would love a shot at a blade from this
You should try making some damascus thermal break door jambs. I hear theres a high demand for those things.
Only on GOV. Jobs
I love it. Well done, Timmy! :)
Beautiful results!
Fascinating set of videos Tim, thanks.
Very interesting, never seen anything like it. Gorgeous pattern!
