He’s literally talking about the development of an industrial city from start to now. And its main road Telegraph Road. Sounds like a midwestern city in the states. Where that process is only 250 years old.
one of my all time dire straits songs, private investigation is also excellent. mark is like a number of amazing guitarists from the uk. like david gilmour unique and just players of good music
The song is about a specific road in the USA, Michigan I think, driving through gave him the inspiration for the song. My all time favourite piece of song writing!
The song is about a guy setting up home on a dirt track in a wilderness and bit by bit the town grew up around him... The growth of a civilization. Inspired by his tour bus going down an actual road in the USA called Telegraph Road and his imagination of how it came about. Incredible song
Makes you wonder if it's a multi generational story. Guy walks down a dirty old track. Over time township builds up. Gets to wars etc, the 6 lane highway, then the township dies away. Could be grandfather, his son, then his son etc
Dire Straits were always perfect and better live than in the studio. Terry Williams on drums (for me the best they had) absolutely great. Alan Clark on keys was out of this world. But also John Illsley on bass, always dancing and just perfect. Hal Lindes on guitar was great. And Mark, you don't have to say anything, he is the god on the guitar and his speaking and singing with a beautiful voice is unique. The “Alchemy” concert was super good. But make sure you also see “Tunnel of Love” live at Wembley, the outro will blow you away.
Knopflers the only guitarist I've ever heard that plays with direction never seem to go over the same notes/tunes twice, I actually get bored halfway thru listening to others who just ramble over the same tune, but knopflers summat else and this proves it 👌🏼
Great reaction, thanks. Mark plays individual notes so clean given his technique he is considered a master by his peers. In the same concert he plays a song called "once upon a time in the West" It's brilliant, he somehow makes it sound like the old west but it's not country and western, more like folk, blues, funk. The song is mellow and bluesy and is quite different and hard to place in a genre, I love it and I think you will too, regards from Mark, Australia LINK ADRESS : ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. ua-cam.com/video/LG9RQS76zGc/v-deo.html&pp=ygUcb25jZSB1cG9uIGEgdGltZSBpbiB0aGUgd2VzdA%3D%3D
Nice one Lee, you need to watch the whole Alchemy concert, it's widely recognised as one of the best love performances of any band in the last 50 years, it truly is an incredible experience, thanks for the great reaction, keep it rockin!
There is much more to explore! In specific (and short-handed) reply to your remarks about the 'meaning' of this track: Mark is a great story-teller, and so many of his songs have an interesting background. In this case, the title refers to the 'Telegraph Road' just outside of Detroit, which is a major north-south thoroughfare in Michigan. Mark was inspired to write the song while riding in the front of the tour bus as they journeyed down Telegraph Road; he was asking the driver about all of the urban blight in evidence at the time ("all these signs just say 'sorry but we're closed,' all the way down the telegraph road"). Mark was concurrently reading 'Growth of the Soil' by the Nobel Prize winning author Knut Hamsun, and was ultimately inspired to combine the two narratives / histories; the result was a song about the beginnings of development along the Telegraph Road, of societal changes, and ultimately, the consequent ebb and flow over the ensuing decades of industrialization, urban development and post-industrial economic hardship.
Thanks Lee. 👍🏻 Mark wrote this while driving down Telegraph Road in Michigan in their tour bus and reading a book called Growth Of The Soil by Knut Hamsun. A big shout out to Alan Clark on piano and Terry Williams on drums. They killed it 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 That guitar at the very start was Mark's 1937 National Style “O” Resonator guitar. The bright red shoes matched the bright red jacket that he started the concert in. You will see it in Sultans Of Swing from the same concert
About Marks playing: did you know Mark is also left handed?. And Mark wrote the song when Dire Starits was touring in the US and the tour bus going down Route 24(aka Telegraph road) in Michigan into Detroit, he was reading the book "The growth of the soil" at the time and he combined the 2 into this song.
Mark plays his guitar by finger picking which I think gives a very unique sound. Another famous guitarist that finger picks is Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac. Both amazing musicians, imo. You could also listen to Tunnel of Love and Skateaway. 2 of my favourite Dire Straits songs, also Cannibals and Wye eye man a couple of his solo songs.
An absolute priority is to listen to (and watch) the song "Brothers in arms" from the concert 'Dire Straits - Live "On The Night" 1993' ... there are other recordings of the song but this is a longer piece with beautiful instrumentals. AND a powerful lyrical sta***ng vocal message and performance. And in this song it's like Mark's guitar has a heart of its own... please give it a play!
He’s basically telling the story of the evolution of the United States in this case. The telegraph came before the railroads, but when the first transcontinental railroad was constructed, they began running the telegraph lines alongside the railroad tracks.
Dire Straits is one of my favorite bands! I actually don't think I've heard this particular song, but it's absolutely fantastic! Top teir! Mark Knopfler is an amazing guitarist and lyricist, absolute legend, and I've always thought that their drummer is super good too. If I were to reccomend an underated song of there's, I'd say The Mans Too Strong, or Heavy Fuel, those ones are amazing.
Hi, love your channel and reaction. If you liked this, I think you'll really like the song Private Investigations from Dire Straits - Live "On The Night" 1993 which is really popular. He actually narrates here and is so haunting and spine chilling with an explosive jawdropping finale. Anyway cheers and all the best from Australia. 👍🎸🎸🎸
You appreciate your music the youngsters of today don't understand music with everything techno beat these days ,,it annoys me the younger generation only know rap and hardly see anyone playing an instrument these days
Hey just letting you know that sites reacting to Bill Burr comedy clips seem to get a surge in subscriptions, bit like you get from reactions to Angelina Jordan, ones like "Gold digging whores" and "Women failed the WNBA" are hilarious, politically incorrect and ranted but largely truthful in facts.
This kind of reaction shows absolutely no respect for this song. Why all the waffling? Just try listening to it, think about it and then give your opinion. This is really irritating.
One of the best performances of all time!
Absolutely ¨out of this wooll¨
Pure genius
He’s literally talking about the development of an industrial city from start to now. And its main road Telegraph Road. Sounds like a midwestern city in the states. Where that process is only 250 years old.
Mark just released his 10th solo album after turning 75. He is still going strong.
Yes I subscribe to his channel. Still great.
Now you need to see Sultans of Swing live from the same concert for fantastic guitar solos....
absolute masterpiece, perfect delivery. can't be beat!!
one of my all time dire straits songs, private investigation is also excellent. mark is like a number of amazing guitarists from the uk. like david gilmour unique and just players of good music

Probably one of the greatest live performances ever recorded
MK genius as a band DS were just ridiculous live make a great song epic

Pure perfection 😢
That performance was the encore to a 2 hour plus long Alchemy concert. I suggest you also watch "Sultans Of Swing" from the same gig.
The whole concert was a masterpiece. Not a bad song in it.

Great suggestion 🤘🏻🎸 Phil Palmer on that guitar gives me chills everytime
The song is about the pioneering days in the USA.
with Mark. he narrates a song, his guitar sings them, and this song is inspired by Detroit in the USA.
claw hammer style his words.
He is talking about Detroit up and down…..

I liked your enthusiasm but please stop cutting the video so much while you chat. 😂
try listening more and talking less
Yes I agree, it kind of spoilt it for me. It much better if he would have saved his many stories and opinions for the end.
Why don't you listen to the whole song before you open your mouth and spout rubbish? Having said that you still probably wouldn't get it !!
Such a nice person 🙄
