I have had this camera for some time and been getting used to it and in this video I take it for a walk on the Streets of Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

I'm a big F6 fan and I was happy to find a video I hadn't seen yet (this one). I ended up getting a lesson on how to interact with people when out shooting. This was superb.
Loved all the photographs you took. Nikon F6 is a brilliant camera, perhaps technically Nikon's best SLR. Nikon is really foolish, much like Leica , to abandon their heritage in favour of this digital crap. The old gentleman was delightful.

How are they foolish like Leica for abandoning film? Leica costs so much that you have to sell a kidney nowadays, but they are the only company in the world as far as I know, that still produces high quality 35 mm film cameras.
They are kicking quite strongly and they do find their customers
@@Kref3 Because they are essentially a camera maker, and film cameras are still the soul of photography. They also rely heavily on Sony for their sensors. Sony is a rival. Now I hope you understand why they were foolish to totally abandon film cameras. Also, Leicas cost a lot of money partly because they are hand made in Germany, not mass produced in Thailand or China or the Philippines.

I'm gonna sound like a crabby old man, but the simpler the camera, the more I like it ... gimme a match needle old SLR and experience and I am happy!!! I do love peeling paint!!! SO wonderful you met that character!!!
I'm with you there Brian. Most of my classics meters are touch and go. Before this and the F5 the F90X was my most reliable.... still is.
It took me some time to find a nearly mint F6 on the European market. Now I have one and I'm more than happy to shoot film. Besides my Nikon DSLs the F6 feels like a member of the same family, easy to use and with brilliant results.
Cracking cameras. Nikon really knew how to build top quality 35mm cameras. Loved my work FM2.
Gee, I thought my EOS 1v was loaded with features. But the F6 is on another level!

Good evening. Just looking at your Lovely Video on The Nikon F6. I purchased mine in 2006 .I'm not a wealthy man! It's that in 2005 I Lost My Dear Mother ( God Bless Her Memory. ) A little bit of money came my way so, with My Dear Wife's permission after spending a Long Weekend in London I purchased The Camera. It's a beautiful Camera! I'm 70 years young with health issues? However, even in The Devastating situation we find ourselves in at present I always bring my Gear down and make sure everything is working smoothly. I've been a Nikon Man for most of My Photography Life after working Hard and much saving i have Quite a selection. Anyway, really like your Photography. Hopefully i shall be able too do some myself this year ( With Care) A Happy New year to you. Many thanks and Kind regards Colyn.

It happened to me a few time to meet someone on the street who noticed and knew I was still using a film camera in 2020, those conversations are always nice when meeting those very knowledgeable gentleman
Yes it does strike conversation Nelson. Especially with the older generation.
I've found the older the camera the less uncomfortable people feel about shooting on the street. People are very curious when I'm lugging around my Baby Speed Graphic, while my F4 gets a less friendly response. My favorite cameras on the street are the Retina small c and Olympus XA.
Hello, I just found your channel and subscribed. I live in the USA and am giving a great deal of thought to buying this camera and the MB-40 grip. I grew up shooting film and have recently returned to the shooting B & W with an F100. Great job and I really liked your images. Well done!

Thanks for uploading more footage from the Isle of Wight, I've photographed the pier at Ryde many times. The great thing about film is that not only can you get great pictures on an incredible camera such as the Nikon F6, you can get equally good pictures on a Nikon EM with a 50mm f1.8, or a £25 Praktica with an ancient Helios up front. It's all about the photographer, the kit is secondary.
Absolutely. I'd get the same from my F90X with that lens on it.

I finally got the F2 along with my F, as I waited so long to get it, and this model of the F2 dates back from 1974, they year that I graduated from High School, but along with it that I am a Nikon Person with the F, and F2 I have the FM, Nikkormat Ftn '69 model, Nikon EL, and a F100. But on my Medium format I also have a Bronica S2A 68 model with ALL Nikkor Lenses. I am pretty proud in what I have, and use, and more enjoying in shooting film then, to today. I called my Nikon F "Frank B" was the name of my friend Co-worker when I working at the camera store then, and he told me to get the Nikon F with the F36 drive, and I had a BALL using with it when I was in Japan for 3 weeks, and bringing back over 300+ rolls of film. As I processed them Photoshop them, and finally scan them, now they are in my Instagram, and Photo Tumblr page. Thank You - You Inspire me to do more shooting with FILM...

I love what to old guy said about film vs digital
Wrought iron always looks so good on film. Handrails, street poles, little fences. The older the better.
Got one, the matrix metering is fantastic. If I have a really extreme exposure range, will just move the camera to get the desired increase/decrease and hit the rear lock button. But my favorite view finder is in this camera. Bright with the focus confirmation huge, bright and centrally located so don't have to take eye off the focus point when using spot focus. 1/8000 sec is fantastic, it takes all my F mount nikon, zeiss and voigtlander lenses and will quickly autofocus. 5.5 fps is where I set my d850. Rewind automatically leaves leader out so I can easily change film mid roll and later re load it. I have the f100 and f6 and this has both beat. If I was to have one 35 mm film camera, this would be it.

I really enjoyed this video. One difference over here in the US is that people will call the cops instead of ask you politely why you are taking photos of anything.
No way! Surely that's a waste of cops time.
I think if Nikon or one of the other major manufacturers came out with a simple camera, there would be a huge worldwide interest, sales would be less than digital, but still healthy, one of the reasons I never bothered with an F6 was it's overly complicated nature, though the facility to leave the leader out on rewind slipped by me and could have convinced me to take the plunge, well in closing can I say how much I've enjoyed your videos and best wishes for the future.
Thanks Stephen. You can also choose when the film rewinds... after the last shot or manually. Somehow I set it to rewind after the last shot and when I went to rewind the film nothing happened. I thought it had froze on me! In the darkroom I opened the back and the film was rewound. I had the setting set like that ha ha. Confused to say the least.

Merry Christmas! Nice video! I’ve always enjoyed shooting my F5 & F6 but particularly love my F6! The ease of shooting creatively seems to come more naturally than with some of my other film cameras. Nice to see another photographer promote using the F6 here, the more the merrier! Keep it up!
Ha! Minolta had the digital menu in 2000 with the A7 even so these last generation film cameras are fascinating

Great video! I love the Nikon F6. I've managed to collect 3 of them over the years. The last one I bought new last year, one of the last that was sold. I use matrix metering and Autofocus and shoot everything with an aperture of F8. I have the Nikon 28-105 D which stays on the camera all the time. Having a zoom lens works great for Street, especially during these 'Covid' times.
I have many other cameras but I have the most fun and get the most 'keepers' using the F6.

Interesting Jerry. I wasn't so sure about black and white on matrix as I read in the manual it's geared up for colour. I need to play with that,
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I get good results with B&W using matrix metering. Nikon mentions not to use filters with Matrix, which I never do. I always like to try things for myself. As with everything else, there are always exceptions like very contrasty scenes that will need exposure adjustment. For most scenes matrix metering works well.
People seem to have forgotten how easy it can be to get B&W photos from color photos! All it takes is a B&W conversion when you scan to digital! You can literally get two kinds of photos from one color photo. Can frequently redeem a less than desirable color photo when converted to B&W. Give it a shot! You might like it!
what would be cool is being able to rewind leaving the leader out and then being able to go back to where you left off later, so you switch between film for day and night for example instead of being stuck on portra 800 for days lol
It's funny I was thinking of dev'ing a few films I have shot today seeing as Christmas Day is now behind us and your video popped up and gave me a bit more of a mental kick up the backside so better get on with it, no excuse! Thanks.

Nikon have gone all in on Mirrorless cameras. They kept the production of so many legacy products going that they almost missed the boat with the mirrorless revolution and had a very rocky couple of years as they have made the transition, but I'm thankful we have a good supply of great Nikon film cameras to choose from for the foreseeable future.
I shoot with an F 5 . Also a D3S and an 800E. Love the F 5. Just getting back into it. Film has so many different varieties of this time.

Hey Roger, just paused the video when you were talking about using center weighted metering in full frame average mode. If you are going to do that, i recommend using the full matrix meter instead. It will still meter the whole frame, but will be way more intelligent about it.
Also secondly, as a fun fact, the CSM menu on the F6 is the same 2 digit codes as the F5, so you can largely use the F6 as a guide for the F5 CSM codes.

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Best meter in a film camera. Bar none. The F6 will also Matrix Meter with AI level lenses as long as the focal length and max aperture have been programmed into it.
I've had my F6 for a good while now and put 60 rolls through it since I got it. If you have any F6 questions let me know.
Last top tip I have is to get. Type J or Type A focusing screen for the F6 which give you a microprism or split image center spot respectively. Very handy for manual focus lenses.
@@GregoryVeizades do you know how the electronic rangefinder of the F6 looks like with manual focus lenses such as the AI or AI-S series? Is it similar to the focus peaking on mirrorless cameras? I tried looking for pictures of the electronic rangefinder in action but I could not find any.

Love your show. We have many of the same camera's and interest. I will be bringing my enlarger back into service this year after watching you work. I now have over 100 camera's mostly working. I love the Nikon professional series from the S range finder to the F6. I also just purchased the z6II and the Z9. still love my film cameras though.

I think more than any of the many film photographers out there you capture the joy of shooting film. As the great gent you talked to explained, the images you take starting to emerge as it is developed. You do a great job of capturing the full process Love to see you hit the road a bit to maybe some of those interesting locations along the south coast.

Fantastic camera... Totally agree... perfect for the ones who love slide (like me)... too bad the batteries are not AAA - like in the F100 (another wonderful camera)
I remember someone had a tip about leaving a tap running for a few minutes to collect dust or something similar, not sure what you can do in a shed, one of those little battery powered fountains perhaps or get the hose out, carefully ;)
The dust was from the glass carrier Adam. Hard to get off. But I do get floaters around the shed. Usually a dust and hoover and leave the door open does the trick. I once steamed it too
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss curious mix of inside and out in a shed, supposedly lots of dust comes from outdoors, the stuff that isn't dead skin floating around anyway ;)

Lovely stuff. Good point about the weight of the F5 helping to stabilise it. I took an F80 out for the day with ADOX CMS 20 II, shooting wide angle at ISO20, and got good results but was thinking a monopod would have helped. I'll try the F5 next time and see how that feels. And yes, people's attitudes really do change when they're hear its film. I reckon it's cos they think you're collecting evidence for the council or HSE, until they hear that.
And when they see it from distance, it looks like modern DSLR. Even my Nikon F90X looks very close to modern digital, to most of people I think... :)

You should be fine with low speed films. When I went to Heathrow I explained I had film and they just put them on a drug scanner and let me go without the X-ray, same on way home from Middle East

I'd love to get my hands on an F6. Always loved the camera, but it's a bit out of my price range!!! It's a pity that Nikon stopped production of the camera. However, if Nikon wanted to make a film camera again, they'd be better off trying for something like an F3. Simple, mechanical, reliable camera that could use every lens they ever made (well, most of them, except for those stupid G series lenses). It probably wouldn't make as much money as the digital cameras, but there's still a lot of film photographers around and they'd be interested if the price point was good. Might surprise Nikon.

You're probably right Carl. If they ever did they would make a "less robust" version of the F3.
Nice camera - you have yourself a £1k - £2k camera at todays prices. Personally prefer the early 'manual' cameras for film as I feel more involved in taking the photo and takes me nearer the digital experience - plus these are a hell of price these days!
Great video. I picked up an F5 after watching your video & love it. I looked into the F6 but I read that the internal battery can fail & is very hard to get replaced. Couple that with the price difference & I was convinced the F5 was for me. Happy Christmas & look forward to more videos next year.
Cheers Alan. It takes two CR123A batteries which I got from our supermarket. I've dropped one bar, probably mainly due to the LCD Light where I've extensively played with the menu system. Time will tell mate.
He is referring to the internal battery. It ensures that information is not lost during the transition from one battery set to the next. I’m not aware that the F6 gets totally unusable in case the (chargeable) internal battery is no longer functional.
Doh!
So Alan, apologies. I just removed the CR123A Batteries and the clock reset so I assume the internal battery is dead!! But then I look at the data from my previous shoot and that is still stored on the camera. Strange! I now have to set the date and time again and make sure I leave the batteries in until they need replacing.

The F5 was the best film camera ever! The F6 was a great camera too , but was an "After thought" issue that came out too late as the world was already switching over to Digital Camera was it was released. I have both and sadly they are now collecting dust. I'm all in for Digital.
I do wonder if Nikon was keeping ahead of film by brining out the F6 just in case digital didn't catch on for professional work. Or it was a last goodbye to film?
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I think it was last hurrah to film by Nikon, If they thought the F6 had a future with the professional community it would have been designed with a larger battery (or rechargeable) battery pack as standard, and not offer the add on grip as an afterthought. The D1 was in development at the same time that the F5 was in production and Nikon were also dabbling in collaboration with Fuji. My own F5 is my go to when I'm felling a bit lazy (or shooting specialist/low ISO films) and what a great point & shoot. Would like an F6 but think my F5 will out live me.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I think the F6 is like the FM3a, which was Nikon's farewell to the fully mechanical SLR. But I am happy that whenever Nikon creates a "farewell" camera, they try to go all-in with its features. I wonder if they will do the same with the DSLR. I think that Nikon will be committing to mirrorless going forward.
Hehe...Among the Pro AF-Nikons the F5 and F6 are just "Toys for Boys" and the F4 is the "Tool for Men" :P

I won’t change to mirrorless until they have an optical viewfinder. They never will so…
The shame about this wonderful camera is that it is practically not repairable anymore (at least here in Germany it is not).
I considered buying one some months ago and since it was still on the shelves of camera shops as new until 2 or 3 years ago and was still on the Nikon webpage as new at that time, I would have assumed, that Nikon can and will service it for at least another 7 years (10 years of support and spare part supply is really not unreasonable for products that expensive).
Nope. Contact any Nikon service point in Germany and they will tell you, that they can do easy adjustments, but that they neither have nor can get any spare parts, especially of the electronics.
Currently they still can send the camera to headquarters in Japan, but they do not know how long that will remain an option.
Now I know that their professional cameras are built to a standard where you usually do not expect faults on such young cameras, but still. They basically canceled the camera and took it of the shelves just in time to have the supply last till the last camera dropped out of the warranty period. Stocks ran out weeks or months after the last new F6 dropped out of warranty period.
I really consider this terrible customer service and expected better from a company like Nikon.
So I watched so many of your videos, and never commented, all brilliant to watch, however on this occasion I thought it’s comment time, so I shoot with a Yashica 124g and Nikon F5, I was looking to purchase another F5 or an F6 my conundrum is this is the F6 really worth the extra cash. Given you’ve shot both your view would be be greatly appreciated
Cheers David. It's smaller than the F5 and obviously newer. Between the two I guess the metering is better improved (martix) and I can rewind the film so the leader sticks out so I can save the cassettes. As for size, I have the battery grip not so its big again! Also the internal battery is dead meaning it drains my batteries trying to recharge the internal battery so I have to take batteries out. I should really send it off to Nikon to have the internal battery replaced.

Digital as a work horse is king. Film is much more fun I find.
Lovely camera with stunning results as always. I'm sure I would disagree with myself if it were 20 years ago, but I feel like a camera this advanced isn't as fun as a fully manual one - it's too modern. I can see myself blowing through rolls of film without much thought.
Of course you can get carried away with autofocus and auto exposure and auto advance. The option is there to turn it all off if you want to slow down.

Why would you want to slow down with so much film to shoot on 35mm format, getting 36 exposures in my fully manual Pentax Spotmatic takes ages to be done (a few weeks), which in fact actually makes the process less enjoyable, and I end up just having to overcomplicate everything.
Some auto features would help a lot when I just want to actually go out and compose, instead of having to worry about if my focus was perfect (and I get really mad about this), the exposure is spot on, etc.
I wouldn't still blast through film regardless of having those features...
@@Ryan-lc4bl I've noticed these past few months that even though I shoot more, I'm not as happy with my results. I chalked this up to shooting more, which is effortless with my Minolta 5, but a bit harder with a fully manual camera. I have to actually work with a manual camera for the image I want. The faster I can shoot, the more wasteful I find myself getting. That's what I meant by slowing down: quality over quantity. I will almost always use the roll in one day depending on where I go, but I just try to make every one count even though nobody goes home with 36 winners.
Don't get me wrong though, I love AF and autoexposure. There are definitely times I wish I had them on certain cameras. But if I want to shoot and just worry about composition, I'll use digital or a modern SLR, then no fussing about with focusing rings or light meters. Saves me time and effort especially with fast-changing subjects. No way you'll catch me doing street photography with a manual 645, for example

My obsession with composition forces me to slow down anyways, but still I only get around 10-15 keepers out of 36, not bad...
Mainly when manual focusing, whenever the lighting conditions force me to use a larger apeture, in low light, I check my depth of field a lot of times before shooting, and still wish I got more in focus.
If you're not shooting on a tripod, and you have a fully manual SLR with no lightmeter, it takes some getting used to, and sometimes it gets tedious...
If I had 12 shots instead of 36, it'd be much easier...
@@Ryan-lc4bl Despite being deliberate about my exposures, I'm not quite so patient to set up a tripod and meter perfectly for every frame. I just want to enjoy the process (since I'm not a good photographer, I like shooting more than I like the shots). I could fire off a whole roll and be done, but that's not as much fun. Hope that makes sense.
I find the 24 frame rolls of 35mm to be nicer for those one-and-done days, where you don't want to leave the film in for a while. Even better when they're on sale and cheaper per-frame than 36.
I can honestly understand street photographers getting defensive when approached. I'm introverted and non-confrontational so it's an anxiety trip every time I go. I've read some stories where cops are called on 'suspicious' characters with a camera. Worst case scenario in NY, you have Port Authority question you. I had someone spit at me after they were presumably not too happy being in a shot. On the positive side, I had an old jogger point at me on the bridge and say "645" about my Bronica. It's a matter of getting used to being out of your comfort zone.

I have a F100 and the only thing I wish it had was a viewfinder with 100% coverage. The F6 just looks like the ultimate film SLR but the price.
I've heard the 100 is very similar
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss it is supposed to be a baby F5. I also had the N90s but that camera feels like a toy next to the F100. The F100 also works great with G glass. Still, if the prices on the F6 ever do drop and film is not too expensive then I would love one

It was cold in there John! I could see my breath as I was talking! I usually have a radiator on but it was only a small session. The developer had dropped and took a bit longer to pull the blacks out.
It will probably go m'less until someone has the bright idea of creating what we already had, again!
Hey… really enjoying your review… i never see someone produce the image with those enlarger system before… So is sigma 24-105mm good for film photography? Is it compatible with F6? Do you have to calibrate it first with the dock system? You’ve mentioned it before 7:40
