    🎥 About This Video....
In this video I walk the Streets of COWES on the Isle of Wight looking for compositions and seeing if these cameras could work for me when I visit Cities. In this day and age you can't be too careful when walking the busy streets with expensive gear! After all, Phones, Watches and Coats are being taken daily in parts of London. Also I ask you what camera you use for street photography.

NOTE - at 8:56 I said you need to change the shutter speed after advancing. Thats what I was told, however, I found a manual online which says ***IMPORTANT!!! NEVER CHANGE SHUTTER SPEEDS WITHOUT FIRST COCKING
THE SHUTTER!!!*** Thanks to those in the comments for pointing this out.

I live in East Los Angeles and the main worry for me has always been gang members and law enforcement but now it's also mentally ill homeless people. So it can be difficult to walk around and just take pictures. I've used a Canon P, Minolta X-370, and Olympus Trip 35 and I didn't feel safe using them so now I simply use point and shoots like an Olympus Infinity Jr, Olympus AF-1, or the Olympus XA-2. When people see me winding the camera after I take a picture they either smile or kind of giggle at my direction. It would hurt if someone stole my XA-2 but I'll survive if the others were stolen. You always have to be aware of your surroundings when shooting. Cool topic and video.

I lived next to the bridge to East Los Angeles for a few years in the middle 1980's. I work at looking like I fit into the scenery and not like a tourist. Sitting in a cafe facing towards a window and using a polarizer is another option for dry but gritty street shooting in bad weather. Use the table like a tripod.

I have a Fed2 as my main camera (with a Jupiter 8 lens) although I don't do street photography that much. When I do, I prefer the smaller Rollei 35B just because it never catches the eyes of the people. The Fed is big enough to be seen.
Now some points I have to make:
The model you have with the 2 piece shutter dial (inner piece with the dot and outer ring with numbers) doesn't have any problem with changing the speed whenever you want. So yay!
Only the cameras that had a single piece shutter dial have that problem (Feds, earlier Fed2s some Zorkis and I believe the early Leicas).
Also you got the sequence wrong, first you have to wind the film and then change the speed.
From the photos that you showed to us from the Fed, I suspect that it needs a CLA (cleaning, lubricating, adjusting) as the exposure of the frame isn't consistent. The right part of the images is darker than it should be. If taken care, this camera has nothing to be jealous of a Leica III !
Keep up the good work! I realy enjoy your videos

I will use any of my manual advance 35mm bodies (FM3A/F3/M3/MX/Retina etc) but also Mamiya C220 or Baby Rollei TLR's. Actually if I want more street portraits I'll use the TLR's as they seem to just invite conversation and make it easy to ask for and get someones portrait.

For many years I've been using a Nikon F4 with the smaller grip. Never had any issues or worries in the streets. I always come back with great results. I teach a street photography workshop at my local university and I introduce three types of street photography; traditional, portraits, passive. That way everyone in the class can have fun, especially if a student is not comfortable capturing candid images or talking to people to take portraits. The passive style that I teach for these students allows them to focus on strong compositions in the environment and wait for someone to walk into the frame to add a human element.

It’s a great question. My problem is nowadays I don’t have the patience/confidence to achieve anything other than photographs of ‘people walking about’ which isn’t the best example of street photography. But this is entirely opposite of when I worked as a Press photographer, there would be a purpose, which gives you bravado and a mission. So I would say go out with an explanation formed in your head of what to tell people you are doing, and nine times out of ten people will respond with equal enthusiasm.

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  2 місяці тому

Very good advice. I usually say I am documenting the streets on old film for myself. Something I do every few years. Usually puts people at ease if they question. But you're right about having a mission such as a press photographer and having purpose.

I usually shoot with an M42 Sears TLS (Ricoh made version). They are reliable and cheap as dirt here in the US with unlimited lens selection. I like 72mm to 85mm to keep my distance with an isolating depth of view. I have a suggestion on approaching people to take their photo. I always compliment something to defuse the creep factor. I say something like "hey, I like your hat (or beard, shoes, shirt, tattoo or what ever)" or "I like your style, mind if I snap a quick picture?" It works 99% of the time.

Hello Roger. I am a 50 year old Londoner, who is a photography enthusiast. I recommend that you explore the London Underground for Street-Photography projects; as well as the markets in Camden Town. I am good at pretending not to be photographing someone, I use the same technique you used when you were crouching behind steps outside a building. There is a UA-cam channel I can't remember what it's called, but there's one New York based Street-Photographer who uses a large-format camera mounted on a traditional wooden tripod 😂. My favourite cameras were the manual focus film SLRs from the late 70's and early 80's, they had virtually no features just basic controls thus were simple to use.

FED-2 (like in your thumbnail!) is my go-to for street photography. I use Lomography Lady Grey film and I semi-stand develop it. I'm deliberately aiming for a 1950s look to my results. I like taking photos that have the feeling of sinister mystery that you get from the thumbnails people put on true-crime videos.
I use a Praktica MTL3 with Pancolar 50mm if I want to photograph details, flowers, etc.
For "Social" photography (friends, family, boasting on Instagram) I have an Olympus PEN E-PL10 Micro 4/3 digital camera.

I shoot with Nikon F2, F3 and FA, mostly. I’ve invested in all the fastest manual focus lenses they made but if I would gladly give them up if I thought someone was threatening me. I can (almost) always get another one. There are some personal rules I follow when street shooting… situational awareness is always #1, if it’s not obvious that a particular person is my subject then I don’t ask, if it’s obvious I’m singling someone out photo a photo-always ask first. In a crowd- shoot away! Sometimes sensitive individuals rail at you but the key there is: don’t take it personal and de-escalate.

I'd love to do more street photography but carrying around an expensive dslr and lens puts me off the whole process. I guess in some circumstances you could get away with it but there's always that nagging doubt in the back of your mind "am I going to get mugged and robbed" which spoils the enjoyment of the whole process....so yes....for "stress free street photography" get out the rattiest old camera you have and blast away....that way if you do get mugged you can chuckle at the fact that the thief will be disappointed when he only gets a tenner for it from his dodgy mates down the pub. I did have a weird experience a year or so back. Taking street shots out in the east end with my Rolleicord, some random guy who looked like he was a bit... "unpredictable" started on me, going "what you doin' mate? You're not allowed to take pictures of people on the street". I said I wasn't taking pictures of people, which was actually true. Then he started saying something about seeing flash go off, which was quite remarkable, given that I was using a camera that doesn't actually have a flash. Street shooters need to be mindful of their surroundings and the chances of running into random nutters.

While a junkie might not be able to tell between a FED and a Leica, they certainly can tell between something that looks janky held together with tape and something else. I've had two zorki 1c , both have had shutter curtain issue (I fixed one with liquid electrical tape, royally screwed the other trying to do a full replacement). On the other hand, my Zorki 4k is spot on, great camera, cheap, super bright range finder.

Awesome vid as usual, however you should probably be cautionary when shooting with your film cameras. Current mirrorless cameras can look similar too old film cameras, and a would be camera thief may confuse your old film camera with a current digital camera that costs in the thousands. Cheers mate!

As a camera repair guy for those cameras, I have to confirm your comment that the warning from 8:56 on is just twisted around. It has to be said:
NEVEr EVER CHANGE SHUTTER SPEED UNTIL YOU HAVE COCKED THE SHUTTER !!!
This can be taken as "the Soviet Camera Rule"
The reason is simple: When you release the shutter, the shutter dial turns with the moving curtain. Thereafter, the figures shown on the dial do not align with the setting of the shutter mechanism under the hood. This means that it is easily possible to choose a setting that will move beyond the mechanical limits of the system when cocking the shutter. Breaking and bending of parts really happens in that moment. Only after cocking the shutter, all mechanisms are aligned and the shutter can be set. Regarding Fed 2, 1, Zorki, C, 2, the missing of the slow speed mechanism often allows a little bit more tolerance. But all cameras with the slow speed settings longer than 1/125 or 1/100 will immediately break when not obeying to this "Soviet Camera Rule".

Nowadays, I still think, it is quite difficult to go into street photography without having to cope with conflict situations.
My first information to suspicious people is that I take photos on film. Accordingly, there will be no metadata like position, date, time or direction of the shot. Naturally, some social media platforms might be able to identify a person and even a place. But the lacking of the remaining data makes it absolutely impossible to tell under which circumstances and so forth this person passed the position of the photographer. Thats a good reason to refrain from the use of digital cameras in Street Photography.
If required, I'd not rip the film out of the camera but ask the person for an email address where I can forward the developed image to for approval prior publication in whatever system.

I'm going to try street photography for the first time soon with my Praktica VLC2, which is not dissimilar to the Nikon F3, but only costs a fraction of what the Nikon costs. 😁
Otherwise, as soon as I can afford the CLA, I will have my Voigtländer Vitomatic IIIcs completely refurbished. But I'll leave that to a professional, as the camera is too valuable for me. I only paid €60 including shipping costs, but I was extremely lucky to get it so cheaply. Especially that this particular model from the Voigtländer Vitomatic series was only built 4200 times. The Vitomatic is a very serious alternative to the Leica M series or the Voigtländer Bessa R series, even though the Vitomatic was built between 1966 and 1968. I no longer need a Leica or a camera from the Bessa R series. 😉

It was my first time shooting analogue again in over 18 years and after a short period of getting used to it again, it was as if I had never done anything else. The only thing that doesn't really work on my camera any more is the film counter. The rewind crank turned with every film transport to the next picture and at the end of the film (and that was 36 or 37 shots) you couldn't stretch/transport any further. So everything was fine. I'm curious to see how the first film turned out after such a long analogue break. 😉

Right of the bat I have to start by saying, I was never one for street photography. That is until I bought ( primarily for winter use) an OM System Tough TG-7 digital compact. It's become to all intents and purposes an every day carry camera. I take it whenever I go out to the shops or whatever. And that by default means street photography. I am only recently getting back into 35mm film but wouldn't dream of using my recently acquired (lusted after for decades) Hammer, sorry I mean, Nikon F3, as a street photography camera. And that for just the reasons outlined in the video. I live in East London and an expensive looking camera even to Johnny Opportunist-Thief who wouldn't know a decent modern ( DSLR/mirrorless) camera from a half brick, an F3 represents an attractive prize for a snatch, and at the price I paid for it, it's too precious to risk, same goes for my D7500 Nikon and its baby sister D3500, not to be risked on the street. The OM system TG-7 just looks like a run of the mill compact point n shoot, not like it is in fact a £550.00 digital camera doesn't draw a lot of attention. I think if I was going to try 35mm film on the street I'd likely take my 1980s original Lomo. Nobody is ever going to look at that and think its worth grabbing I think. But yes I agree my cameras are like my children too precious to take to risky environments so if it's street or risky locations the OM System TG-7 (in black like mine not red) is the way ahead for me and for 35mm film the Lomo

I'm concious of peoples privacy and invading their personal space by pointing a camera 📷 at them.
So what I tend to do is instead of using a bigger canera and long lens, I'll use something smaller and discreet like my olympus pen ee half frame or mju point and shoot.
A big camera setup tends to look expensive to the untrained eye, therefore an attractive item to a thief.
A smaller camera tends to be less obtrusive and people are less concerned by them, you just look like a tourist taking holiday snaps. It looks like a cheap 'toy' so not as attractive to a phone or camera snatcher!
Another trick is to compose a photo of a building or scene instead of people, then photograph the people who walk into the frame.
That way it looks like they walked into your photo rather than you taking a photo of them! 😊😮
