The addendum to this Bobby Columby story is memoir of a Jaco girlfriend at the time, she seemed to recall he’d accidentally recorded over Bobby’s tape so couldn’t listen to it and was too embarrassed to go back to Bobby and ask for another! But his ability to quickly get into grooves was legendary. What’s that record with Brian Melvin, ‘Standards Zone’? Brian put him up, he turned up incapable of anything, they put him in a spare room, after about a week he said ‘when do we play?’ and most of that LP is just sublime.
Bob Moses tells a similar story about how he met Jaco when Pat Metheny invited Jaco to play on their Jazz gig. They go to play All the Things you Are and Jaco says he doesn't know it - alarm bells ring. Apparently he glances at the chart for half a minute then they start. After the first chorus he doesn't look at it again, and then he's all over it, playing it better than Bob had heard anyone play it. It's in the genes, Bob said.
All the stories you hear about Jaco's insane genius are not an exaggeration. Dude was obscenely gifted. I used to wander into Ace Music (North Miami) when I was a kid, would sometimes see him in there playing. I didn't know s**t about music at the time, but I knew I was watching someone special.

I know the son of the owner of Ace Music. He's told me stories from when he was a kid about the Bee Gees who were family friends from the store. Ace provided the synthesizers to the Bee Gees. The BeeGees lived in Miami and did their writing and production there.

this is about "memory melody"...Jaco had great memory, "auditory memory"feeling memory" the ability to run a song pattern with chord changes and "printed" in his brain cell, Jaco was the only bass player ,who had the idea to learn "Donna Lee" memorize the chord changes and make his own arrangement and make a melody solo ,but having great memory and musical sense sometimes have his consequences like the great composer Robert Schumann ,was admited to a psychiatric hospital , same as Jaco "maniac depresive" RIP Jaco
glad to see Bobby. One of Buddy Rich's favorite drummers. Buddy said the one bar break in Spinning Wheel was the best of all time. Put Premier drums on the map a few years before Carl Palmer.
Great story. Is there any way I can hear Jaco revorded with BS&t. I was driving a cab and while driving a cab in west village nyc I stopped and picked up this guy. As he got in he said to me please do me a favor can we wait my friend she is the grocery store I said sure. He said I am Jaco and I answered Jaco pastorius! Yeah! and I said Birdland he smiled. Immediately his female friend showed up and started driving towards 23 and first Avenue. By the way as soon i started driving Jaco sees this cab next us and he said "he just told me he is off duty" but we see him with a fare. Any body would roll the windows and scream at the driver but he didn't say a word. I gave him respect to Jaco. Then hearing a lot of stories he was nuts crazy and all that broke my heart. Sad thing he had bad appearance his face etc. A small story to share.

I grew up with Jim Fielder on the records. Great to hear how Bobby runs the band years later and his experience with Jaco. This has never been covered before. Bobby’s reaction to Jaco’s performance is priceless. I personally think Jaco did listen to the tape in his hotel room and made the ‘photographic memory’ thing up. A good show business trick on Bobby. Just my opinion, we’ll never know. Jaco had the cues down and that made the show tight and lock in. Great clip!

I read somewhere that Jaco and Joe Zawinul were butting heads at some point after the Black Market album Sounded like two incredibly talented musicians with circumstances resulting from egos I remember reading that Joe influenced Jaco to mellow out and wind down with alcohol for a while Sounded like the introduction to alcohol was like pouring gasoline on the fire One thing led to another and being undiagnosed with bipolar disorder, sadly, Jaco submitted to various drugs and alcohol that embalmed the bipolar disorder he was infected with leading to addiction, disaster of mental health and the demise that befell him in the end The sad part is that no one knew that he had bipolar disorder in the beginning
Jaco was always looking for Joe’s validation as a musician particularly after he left Weather Report. Jaco had great respect for the older musicians he played with. Joe could be hard on Jaco at times but the reason I read was because Joe was starting to realize Jaco’s talent was exceeding Joe’s. So it was like the young up and coming musician was surpassing the older also very talented musician. Yet and still they definitely admired and appreciated each other’s talent even with that strain between them.
With a lot of people don’t seem to know, but which came out in a documentary about the person not the music. Jaco was bipolar. And got into drugs during his stent with weather report, which, for him was a toxic combination he ended up homeless sleeping in parks in both New York and Fort Lauderdale while sleeping at a park someone stole his bass and for trying to sit in with a local band,I Fort Lauderdale the bouncer chased him down the street and beat him to death. He was only 35.
This is true but he wasn’t always that way. Growing up he was very disciplined in his playing (very meticulous to where his fingernails had to be filed to the perfect length) and focused. The combination of drugs and being bipolar later on in life definitely took its toll on him. But the late great Wayne Shorter said it best about Jaco “I always felt that inside he was unsettled ya know? No landing place. Almost like he was looking for an airfield to land.” ❤️

For years I’ve heard how great jaco pastorious was at bass. Until recently I’d never heard him play and I saw a concert of his on Netflix or tubi. It took less than 5 minutes to realize that his style of music is just not my thing. I skimmed back and forth through it and no point did I find any of it enjoyable. He seemed technically proficient, but no amount of still will make beatnik scat enjoyable, to me at least. That’s the best way I can describe it, beatnik scat. It’s just all over the place. A Michael Anthony bass solo at a Van Halen concert is more Enjoyable. It’s hipster art house nonsense. His talent could have been put to better use in different music. I’m assuming that he buzz they he was so gifted is true because the bass was so low in the mix I could barely heart it. It certainly wasn’t thumping. It took 10 minutes to garner that opinion, cuz that’s all I could stand. Sorry if I offend anyone, but his music is not for me.
I never heard Mr. Colomby speak before. He is such a good drummer. I'm also a fan of Jaco.

I had NO idea that Jaco ever played with Blood, Sweat & Tears. Holy shit.
