Howdy folks, it's Steve1989 from MREinfo here with a 1970 MCI (C-Ration) and this one has seen better days! I smoke one of the 45 year old Lucky Strike cigarettes in it and it still tasted absolutely 100% normal - not sure how that held up so well - but the accessory packet it was in I suppose had no pinholes in it and it if anything, the tobacco aged over the years. I have 3 left and am planning on smoking 2 and sharing the last one with a very good friend. Hope you guys enjoy the video - this one is totally un-edited so it has it's hiccups. I have new videos and material on the way already and am using Movie Maker to actually edit them properly so they will be a little more professionally executed so my apologies on this one being a bit rambling and "raw" if you will.

His early videos are hysterical. His newer ones are relaxing. No matter your mood, he has a video to suit it.
I served in Vietnam 1967 through 1968 101st airborne Division fighting mostly around Hue. I ate lots of these meals and never thought much about them as to being bad food. I also don't recall other guys bad mouthing the C-rations. We traded back and forth if we picked up a meal we did not care for...almost always you would find someone who liked what you did not like and vice-versa. Example: I did not care for the breakfast...scrambled eggs and ham...it was like eating paste to me. But, my driver loved it. Most people did not like the ham and lima beans. Yet, I grew up on southern cooking and was partial to that one. My favorite was the spaghetti and meatballs especially when we had time to heat the food. I was mounted cavalry fighting from M-113 ACAV fighting vehicle as Track Comander(M-2 .50 cal in the turret) and I was fortunate enough to also be the platoon high explosives and demolition expert so I always had large quanities of C-4 explosive. On the back ramp (large door in the back of the vehicle) there were two "latch pits" with a 1/2" cross bar that locked the door closed while moving. We would lower the back ramp, make it level, drop some C-4 into the latch pit light it and heat the C-ration in a cup of water we would boil a canteen cup of water over the burning C-4. A wad of C-4 about the size of half a golf ball was more than enough to heat a can of rations...also, when the food was hot, add a little more water to the hot water left in the cup and you had just the right temp water for the powderd coffee or cocoa that came with the C rations. I always saved the cigarettes even though we often had full size cartons we would get from our "Care Package" or "Sundries Supplement Issue"- usually we would get a sundries pack about once every week or so. That had about a half dozen cartons of various brand cigarettes, candy bars, soap, shaving gear etc. But, if you were caught in a rain storm, your cigarettes might get really wet and so I would just reach in my pocket and pull out an unopened C-ration Pall-Mall, Winston, Lucky, Chesterfield, Cool or Camel packet...four or five smokes in a little packet... and light up. With each meal, you also got a book of matches, gum, salt and pepper, toilette paper...perhaps a few more goodies. The plastic wrapper for the accessories pack was handy for keeping things dry. I usually carried one or two packs unopened to keep things dry, especially the matches. After days of rain, dry things were at a premium. Everyone had his P-38 on his dog tag chain. Amazingly, I still have my dog tags and my old P-38...The cardboard carton for the individual C-rations was often enough to tear up and burn for heating a canteen cup of water if you did it right...also, the case carton was usually wax impregnated carboard so it would light up nicely and burn hot even if wet ...with a little encouragement (I always had C-4 so this was not an issue for me...but, other guys used the cardboard that way). Also, the toilette paper fresh out of the accessories pack (dry!!) made excellent tinder to start your cook fire aside from it's intended purpose.
+Polypropellor I was with the Marines, mostly in Northern I Corp. C rations were pretty much all we got. i liked most of the meals. But we never seemed to have enough heat tabs. So.............we often used bits of C4. The stuff burned hot. Unfortunately, it also tended to burn the food.

It is safe unless properly detonated. It was commonly used to make a cooking fire etc as it burns safely though a tad hot!

+Steve1989 MREinfo You can still buy Lucky Strikes. They're usually way down on the bottom shelf at the Stop-N-Rob, and probably as old as the ones in your video. I used to smoke "Luckies" back in my Navy days, and they were pretty much our Prozac back then.
+BillHicks420 Bill, Vietnam was the milepost of my life. War changes everyone - for the better and worse - and I'm no exception. It was indelible enough that I remember MCIs, as only one example. And it affected me enough that I wrote two novels about that year.

It's always hilarious when he first shows the package and it looks decently sized but then his hand enters the frame and it's actually quite small.
A few month old fan that's been binge watching these old videos for a while here. And I have to say that you are quite the tobacco connoisseur for a guy who's not a smoker. And that's coming from a guy who's actually a tobacco smoker. You have such a way of describing these cigarettes that I would really love to try them. Especially with how much you've talked about how the cigarettes back then are nothing like the cigarettes of today.
Steve, I picked up my first ration over the weekend from an antiques store. Never thought I would do that but your videos are so awesome I just had to try one myself. I got a B-2 pound cake just like yours in the this video except mine is from November 1971. It was a lot like yours in that it was pretty gross and vaguely pineapplely in scent and favor. When I ate it, it coated my mouth in some film that dried it out instantly. My tongue was sticking to the insides of my mouth and it took a lot of water to flush out that feeling. I'm still alive though and now I want to track down some more! Thanks for the awesome videos and the new hobby! Ha!

The other MRE clips i have seen have dull characterless commentary. Steve keeps it interesting, quirky and hilarious. Fair play to him!
I served just over 32 years, have had both C rats and MRE's, C rats the best, canned food is and was the best tasting. Best way to find out if a C rat can food is good, drop a bit of water on the top of the can, crack it open with P38, if water sucks in it's good, if it blows out it's bad, period.......my favorite, Ham slices, pound cake......you also used the empty cans to use for water, or fill loosely with small rocks, string up on your perimeter for an early warning system, also use empty cans to heat water for coffee....:) the only thing MRSs are good for is not as heavy to carry...
Watching this older video made me appreciate how good your video quality and stuff is in your new videos.

over time, i started getting happy with Steve when i hear the nice hiss. lol.

Man, brought back some memories. The best fruit cake I ever had came from a C-Rat can. I remember the cigs in the pack when I was in basic, but they were not part of that by the end of the 70's.
When on REFORGER or out in the field, the cooks would take the main course out of the boxes and heat them up in water. Then you could get the beans & meatballs box with turkey.
I would heat up the main course on the manifold of the generator for about 20-30 minutes, and have hot food. The can would rotate while it ran, kinda cool.
I also remember the "John Wayne Bars" (crunch bars) and some of the other candy bars. Some would come with fruit cocktail, peaches, pares, and apple sauce. Before I ETS in '79 seems all I ever got was apple sauce.

I loved it when the cases of C-Rats came in on a helicopter in VN. I really liked the sliced pork and we would trade anything for a can of fruit cocktail! The 4 smokes was a bummer though. Hated the Lima Bean and Ham and the fruit cake when could have used with the pound cake for mortar rounds Lol Great video and blast from the past! Thanks!

Came across this guy’s videos in 2020 and now I’m binge watching his old videos😂
When we were stationed in Can Tho, Vietnam during 1970 with the 162nd AHC, we had to take C-Rations with us almost every day on our combat assault missions. Surprisingly we used to joke & laugh about being given C-Rations that had there date of manufacture back in 1950 during the Korean War. We ate them and survived; the U.S. Military didn't waste a thing back in those times! :-)

They have those cut-around-the-lip-bottom openers now that preserve can lids and make edges safer, I find them easier to use too. Good way to preserve historic cans and even modern ones you want to re-fridge.

I was looking for the first “nice hiss” and I got “OooAHhhhhhh NICE.”
It's funny watching the progression in his vids. In this video he didn't want to dissect the old can of beans & meatballs and took the can outside because of the smell. Now he dumps them onto the tray for further evaluation and lets it sit on the trey for the review. Also he would've definitely ate a piece of that cake in the can. In this vid he had to wash his hands after touching it. Much more hesitant in this vid than later vids lol. This was funny.
He also said something about smoking outside because he didn't want to stink the house up. I think the cigarette would have been a welcome scent after that rotten food. 😂

I was born in 77, still had that Chiclets box when I was a kid. I just stumbled across your vids, fun stuff man. You're a much braver soul than I lol. Not being in the military myself but coming from a military family we always had MRE's in the house. Being the CWO's grandson helped too. I've probably consumed way too many of them and even brought them to school for lunches. Good times lol. I always carry a p38 on my keychain as well thanks to Granddad :)

Hey Steve thanx for sharing the info on the old MCI's and remember back during the Vietnam era especially units resupplied by air priority was for ammo & personnel, then water & food so units like Marines at Khe Sanh had only one or two C-rats a day

Yep, my first husband was in Vietnam and brought some MREs home. I had them for over 35 years before throwing them away. Dang, I should have kept them. He hated them lol.

This is hilarious and awesome. There are other rations out there, but somebody has to open them up and see what's in them. Only then do we get to experience them, even if in passing, decades later.
