the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
As an antique dealer I can assure you they are period, wood doesn't look like that without 100's of years of age.
Thank you! Nice to know I wasn't talking out my ear (for once).
I have made two simple winding sticks from white beech and they work good but i think i will make roubo's feet for them.
I can absolutely confirm the transformational nature of this tool for my work after almost fifty years in the shop. As I was working my way through the text and engravings when making the Roubo book for LAP I found this to be one of the most innovative techniques for me to use every time I work a board with my hand planes. As for the book itself, I refer to it with surprising frequency to this day! -- Don Williams
Happy Holidays Don! Are you the same Don the plane maker that gave a blade tempering demo at the MWTCA gathering north of Chicago about 15 yrs ago?
@@bluesideup007 No, I'm not that fellow. I'm the one who writes the books about Roubo and the Studley Tool Chest.
Everybody deserves time off around Christmas so enjoy and happy holidays this is the way
This is the way.
This is the freaking way.
this is the way

Happy Holidays Rex. Thanks for what you’re doing for us aspiring garage woodworkers.
Wood is the way
2:43 I'm sure I mentioned this before, Rex, but I am in the UK. I have visited at least one old, old house with a Tudor oak staircase. I've experienced that finish.
The finish you get from human hands is like almost nothing else. They smooth and treat oak like nothing else.
The reason I am posting is that I am sure one of the guides mentioned that walnuts sometimes were rubbed against the oak.
Rex says "we need to make this" much the same way that Steve Irwin would say "I'm going to poke it."
I saw a very old set of these sell at an auction for $2500. Yours is in much better shape then the ones that sold. There’s not many of these still around. I think you got yourself an excellent find. Good job.
Hi, I wish you and your family a merry Christmas and a happy New Year free from covid 19.
You can also use masking tape and superglue together: tape both surfaces and glue the tape. It’ll hold router templates to your work.
You are really an excellent teacher and communicator. Even in your first videos we could see that you would be big a...king one day. Bravo.
Just for the superglue trick, every minutes were worth it. Cheers!
To be honest, when I learned my trade as a bar fitter 40+ years ago, we only ever used things like two long spirit levels as winding sticks (a spirit level across each end of a long bar top, for instance) because the critical pieces (bar or counter tops) were much larger than what most people work on. We had learned about winding sticks in our training but had no real world use for them for what we were making, so we just went up a level (haha, I just realised what I wrote - no pun intended).
Any two pieces that are exactly the same profile can work as winding sticks, even if they are not parallel; they can be wedges of the same angle and they will still work as good when the narrow ends are at one side and the thick ends at the other. Parallax is not important, so don't grieve over it; just get them equal and put a mark on both narrow or thick ends, so that you know how they marry up to make them work.
Anyway, all that aside, I've got it in my head to make some winding sticks and I want to make good ones. I like this pattern that allows them to be used on both rough timber (lumber in USA) and machined timber. Personally, I would prefer to have them made out of something like aluminium but a stable wood will have to do.
Thanks Rex
I really enjoy your videos.
I found the Roubo book in french. Now it's when my public school french is much appreciated merci beacoup monsieur Pérez.
Merci aussi monsieur Krueger por ce magnifique livre.
Forty years of wood working and I've never seen or heard of Moxon winding sticks. Those are awesome, especially that reference surface trick. Thank you for introducing them to me. I will be making some in the next few days.
Yeah, I like the rebate/rabbit reference surface trick too. Such an inspired method of finding a planar surface for reclamed timber/lumber. It seams that it would save time, overall, as well.
Seasonal greetings and blessings to you and your family. All the best for the new year.
I fell in love with the tools described in Roubo's l'Art Du Menuisier, especially the moulding planes planes, which you and Paul Sellers made a couple variants of before. The open sided French/Roman design is so much easier to create, despite being chunkier and a bit boxier (especially with the wedges) than the English patterns.
It's a shame that this style of plane seems to have fallen on the wayside outside of the rabbet plane that looked to be reintroduced to everyone by Paul Sellers. The 19th century French fillister plane I have in this style is pretty nice (need to make a new nicker though) and looks to be pretty easy to reproduce with hardware one can either buy at a hardware store, like threaded inserts for the fence and depth stop, or make on their own with the blade and nicker.
Definitely gonna be making these winding sticks next. They look sweet.
Have a great Christmas and a good slide!
I hope you have a very merry Christmas and a well deserved rest
Enjoy your break.
Good presentation.
Thanks for the book ref.
Have a great new year with all the family.
This is so great! Your final sticks are beautiful! And when you show how to use them-and your own interpretation of the design-my mind was officially blown!
This is the first time I've seen that variation on winding sticks. Thanks for the video!
Wow, great video again Rex😎 I made winding sticks 2yrs ago, but here's 2 ideas. Could make feet just to slide on and maybe add a little spirit level thingy in centre of sticks
great project! I suppose this is like putting spacer blocks under normal winding sticks, but after a while, Roubo wanted the spacer blocks built in.
Great stuff Rex! I love history mixed with practical skills!
My typical windings sticks have a veeery small bevel along the top edge on one side of a stick. This reflects the overhead shop lights, so when sighting down the board the far stick has a bright upper edge. This really helps picking out the far edge.
I was just thinking today while shooting the end grain on some wood, "I hope Rex takes some time off for the holidays...". You deserve it dude.
Merry Christmas, Happy New year!!!
To whom it may concern ... a pair of spirit levels will work very well. Sure they dont look as good as a pair of wooden ones, but metal doesnt warp and you can be sure they are parallel unless they were made in USSR.
Combining history and woodwork is unique and enjoyable. I encourage you to continue as we follow you into 2021.
I guess we know what an upcoming one off run new Woodpecker tool will be, except their's will be in red anodized aluminum. I am guessing we'll see it before the end of 2022, at least some version of it, or feet that can be added to their winding sticks (now available with spring loaded detents for easy removal should you want to remove the feet accessories).
[Contrasting bare/bright silver aluminum stripe across the top of one winding stick for easier visual differential].
Rex, your content is pushing me over the hump to go out and create more than anybody else. Your practical combination of quality-built traditional tools and modern power tools, (where appropriate) is economical and very satisfying to interact with. Thank you for all you have taught me, and will in future.
This idea of makeing two flat surfaces and then equalice the surface in the middle is totaly new to me.
Nice. Great video as always Rex. Well found!
Have a great break fella! See you in 21!
Ive been using a smaller version of that saw and can say, it is pretty awesome
Nice! Plan on doing this w/ my son over the remainder of his winter break.
Enjoy your time off!
That's a pretty cool wiget. I think I need one. I've been doing the same basic thing with regular winding sticks and setting little gauge blocks underneath.
I really appreciate the historical tools . Roubo was a pioneer in furniture making I believe .
Happy holidays to you and yours , have a blessed new year.
Nice video Rex! You deserve a vacation... Eeck we all need a vacation off this year
Cool video. Another application that springs to mind is putting tenons on split or natural bent wood for rustic furniture, you could make sure your tenons were on the same plane without having to flatten any of the piece.
As is often the case you present a lot of learning in your video's. Take the time off and come back with even more great stuff. Merry Christmas
I have a Bahco laplander for camping and works very well. And was not too expensive.
Fantastic find and reproduction! I use winding sticks all the time, but never saw ones like these. Thanks.
Rex, thank you for your humour, for being an inspiration, and for the instructions. I especially enjoy the vise and bench videos.
Merry Christmas!
Thank you and Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas. This channel is starting to make me believe that woodworking can be a very affordable hobby to get into.
10:00 I don't think you're quite done: you should repeat this test with the feet at various distances from the centre of the stick, moving them closer to the centre as you go on. There is always the chance of randomly located imperfections along the edge of the sticks or a degree of looseness of fit of the feet that might introduce misalignments. By repeating the test at various feet positions you get a better sense of how accurate the device is and when you move them very close to the centre you'll get a sense of whether the fit is acceptably loose or not. The holes in the feet must be cut perfectly square and perfectly parallel to the sticks and at the same time only a hair wider than the sticks - that's very hard to achieve with a chisel. Maybe some bench drill pilot holes could be used as guides.
That's an awesome tool btw that I that I didn't know it existed even. Great video.
You have a winner here, Rex! Haven’t seen any mention of these in the common old-timey texts, never saw any in use. You are ahead of the curve, dude. Cowabunga!
thanks for this one . I build acoustic musical instruments and need to register the plane of the neck with a curved guitar top . up until now I have used strait winding sticks but have needed to balance the one stick on the top of the guitar and and hope for the best . even one of these will give me a quick accurate reference . I will be making these first thing in the morning
Merry Christmas bud see you in 2021 ☃️.
Happy holidays to you and yours too.
Always watch and enjoy your videos! Have a Merry Christmas and thanks for all the videos.
Bahco make some awesome cheap beater tools I love my little Laplander and demolition knife for camping as they're cheap as chips and I've given them some rate banter and after years they're as good as new apart from patina from usage
Wanted to express appreciation for your dissemination of this technology! This turns out to be especially good for getting twist out of a radiused surface, like the fingerboard of an instrument, and I would never have thought of it without this video. Tarkovsky said something in Solaris about all genius ideas were something obvious, this ones really good for me so thanks!
Say hi to Stella for us, and enjoy your time off!
Thank you for taking the time to share this. :)
I love how you waved about that scrap of walnut like a magician!
As always, a really well put together video.
Rex i think you should make a dicord server for people to discuss woodworking more directly and more effectivly communicate with you, or just posting pics of their progress
I love the whole concept of winding sticks and how they are used as very nicely demonstrated by you plus the fact that they dont cost $250 because someone painted them red. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year!
Im a total woodwork/hand tool newbie. I really enjoy your show. Thanks for all the work you do.
Have a great holiday.
enjoy your vacation, Merry Christmas.
Great project Rex. Thank you for sharing. Have a happy holiday and stay healthy.
Proud patron here telling you to take whatever time you need, Rex; lord knows you've earned it. Stay safe and happy holidays to you and yours, my friend.
Merry Christmas to you and yours! I hope that your family remains safe and happy. Thanks for all do for us!
Descanse, feliz navidad y prospero año nuevo
Hi Rex, Thank you for a great year of sharing. I hope you have a great Christmas and New Year.
Enjoy your holiday!!! Thank You For the videos!!! Much Appreciated!!! I actually caught this one 🌲👍😁👏😎
Tipp vor the marking gage. Take a hardened nail.
Good one!
Rex. You have more than earned a break.
have a great vacation! we'll see you when you get back
I'd love to see you make something like this without any known flat surfaces - Just to show us how someone would use E.G. nature or some type of technique (I think I watched a video where someone mentioned grinding three flat-ish rocks with each others to make sure that they'd all be flat in the end (as using just two might've ended up with one being concave and the other convex)! ^^
Hi Rex! Your communication and story telling has always been great, but your woodworking skill is steadily improving, very quickly. If you continue, I think In 10 years time you'll be crazy good :)
Thanks Rex, enjoy your break! You rock
I recognize the semicircular portion at the top of the sliders from somewhere, I can't remember where I saw it or what it was, but I do remember they had a very cool use.
Enjoy your vacation, you have earned it.
Have a Merry Christmas and a blessed new year.
Good day to the King Rex.
11:10 this trick is really brilliant!
Enjoy your Christmas break with family (& the alien from far, far away) stay safe & Covid free. We'll be here when you get back.
Hope you're having a relaxing and enjoyable break. Best wishes, Rex.
You do the coolest wood working videos
period correct face, classic Rex
Thanks for the videos over the year Rex, this is definitely one of your clips that makes your channel stand out from the rest. Hope you and your family have a great Christmas
Take a break we’ll be here when you get back. Merry Christmas Rex
If I had these things Rex just made, I'd use them to gauge the wind on a rough plank... and then put them back on the mantle.
Awesome stuff here... I love mixing a little traditional woodworking with my machine woodworking! Sorta hybrid I guess. I will be making the sticks you show here. Thank you for sharing.
Great video... as always! Have a Merry Christmas.
Have you ever considered making an old school tobacco pipe? I feel like it could be an interesting project.
You deserve a good break. Another fantastic teaching video. I just love the historical references you come up with. Merry Christmas and enjoy your new year. Oh...and may the force be with you!
Excellent video and project. Merry Christmas to you and yours, Rex!
Have a nice break Rex. I really enjoy your videos.
Very cool project, always great to learn something new. I think your the first person I have heard say it's been a great year, good for you. Merry Christmas and enjoy the family and time off.
Rex, you should do a video about how to square the ends of stock that’s too big for a shooting board.
Like a lot of woodworkers I use reclaimed lumber. For me that’s big beams of oak 3.5”x 2.5”.
Thanks Rex, I will make a set of these for sure. This is the way.
Wow, you've really upped your game! You're getting pretty advanced Mr Everyman. Great stuff.
Rex, God bless you, happy 2021, receive a big hug from Puerto Rico and tons of blessings from Jesus to you and your family!!
Ray Ray
Thank you Rex for all your vids, hope you and the family have a great Christmas and new year.
Enjoy your vacation.
Merry Christmas. My wnding sticks are toe pieces of oak 3/8ths flooring, straightened, with a hole to hang them in one end and one face of one stick covered in blue tape. They aren't pretty. I'm thinking I might like a pair of the Roubo sticks.
I like the blue tape!
Rex, great video! Not only the woodworking aspect either. I've noticed your video quality has been really really good lately. Merry Christmas!
Yeah! Supertool! Bought your plans! Nice Rex-project along with the other tools I'm making from your channel! Thnx Rex!
