    Always liked okuma’s zero excuses service. They own the entire machine, electronics, everything. Not a “call Fanuc, Mitsubishi, etc” always liked okuma stuff. Didn’t know they were going so hard into the automation side.

      Me neither - and I was pretty excited to see it - I’d always rather buy a native brand solution than third party - and it seems like Okuma had that well sorted!

      Got a lathe where I work too replace a old okuma, had to buy one with auto loaders. Gutted all it's functionality when we got it so we could hand load. It's bad. Love the lathe though, got an error? Ask it, it has manuals built in, tell you how to fix it. It's nice

    Cool
    Video. Glad to see someone is still working these sorts of things. Most folks today don’t realize that Cincinnati Milacron was doing these exact same things…in the early 1980’s. 40 years ago! Granted, the ease of use wasn’t as good, but the sophistication was absolutely there. My oh my what the US has lost in the name of greed…

    My question is, how often do machine shops get jobs with such large batches that it warrants this kind of automation?

      That’s a question I’ve had a lot too - and with the two options shown in the video that are more modular, I think they make a lot more sense for shorter run production or more job shop-oriented work - the one that’s mounted on the cart, and the one with the arm in the machine come to mind.
      I know the one with the arm in the machine would be well-suited to shorter-run stuff as it’s kind of designed to not only be able to run as full automation, but basically be a job shop machine by day, and then lights-out automation by night. Kind of a nice way to bridge the gap if you’re not doing 1000’s of pieces very often.

      Completely depends on the shop. I have two friends who are machinists, one only does prototypes and the other only does production. The production guy does HUGE runs of parts for major industry clients. Entirely possible he'll be overseeing production of the same handful of parts for months.

    • @StachiBCNR33
      @StachiBCNR33 4 місяці тому

      You have to think different about this. With a small pallet changer you can have an individual part on each pallet and have virtually no down time. You change parts while the machine is running. Rather than buying 3 verticals, rather get a larger 5 axis and a pallet automation. Put 1, 2, 3 or more Vises on each Pallet and hit that green button. Walk away, do other things, like programming the next parts, prepare tools, cut, deburr etc.

    • @Mike-lt6sj
      @Mike-lt6sj 4 місяці тому

      @@StachiBCNR33That's true, but also they are not as productive as 3 machines. When using 4 machines and fms, it shuts all 4 machines down if there's a coolant leak for example.

Often here the interviewer is trying to add information when the answer just hasn't been reached it comes off as sounding condescending and confusing. The interviewee is the expert and should be treated as such. Ask questions not statements.
