Highlights as Italy win the Men's Fencing Team Foil Gold against Japan during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Fencing was included for the first time at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained on the Olympic programme since then. The women's fencing competition entered the Games in 1924 in Paris. Today, men and women compete in individual and team events, in which three types of weapon are used: foil, epee and sabre. The foil was, at first, the only weapon used by women, until the 1996 Games in Atlanta, when women's epee was introduced. Women's sabre appeared for the first time on the Olympic programme in Athens in 2004.

Seems a bit silly to me. There's no real swordplay just bouncing lunging and poking

Been watching fencing for like 3 hours... and I've determined that my eyes are not quick enough for this sport. LOL.
To be fair, you are watching it at 24/30 frames per second, on perhaps a slow hz monitor.
ME TOO
Now try judging it... It's AGONY!
Just kept watching bouts and your eyes will adjust
It’s easier watching it in person, close up and without the limit of fps
1:19:18 I've seen this match nearly a dozen times, and that exchange still leaves me speechless.
Leave it to Yuki Ota to deliver an anime-like fencing moment.
It was the only real display of swordplay I seen in the whole competition. My brain tells me that I want to like the sport of fensing but my eyes tell me it's just men bouncing around trying to poke the other one first. I would much prefer the elegance of real swordplay
@@marshallmackey8990 Epee is going to be a lot closer to actual swordfights, especially if you're not at the level of Olympic athletes.

I really like this, my girlfriend is a very talented and passionate fencer and I have to admit there are times where I really struggle to see why she is so interested in it but there is a poetry in the movements of the fencers. It is nice to be part of something special and it was beautiful to see them win the Men's Fencing Team Foil. :D:D:D
There's some game we can remenber of, but thid one one, and the individual final foil's (men) one of the Olympic's of 2004 are still the best
The Foil of Fencing is essentially the modern version of the French Court sword, which became the fashionable duelling sword of choice in that era. Foil teaches priority, in that it teaches you to respect your opponents attack - ie to parry and riposte. Epee, while termed the duelling sword removes priority, but if you did your Foil training you have learned to respect an opponents blade and will avoid being hit. Foil and Epee were safe training stages in training for sharps.

Nice! I've only competed once in Foil, but I got a silver then... But I'm only 13.

I wish on the replays they had some sort of red circle or something showing where the person was hit. Sometimes it's not so easy to tell.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner watch epee, that's slower than foil
Rainer Bruehl no! Im a Professional epee fencer !! Its not slower !
@@arik2550 its wayyyyy slower, I fence with foil it's faster, no hate.

Avola advances beginning with his back foot when approaching distance. A good comparison of his two styles is at 30:00.
Cassara is such a good fencer! wow.
italy won the gold medal for archery and fencing.....Congrats
amazing sport, I would love to practice it
Ota constantly jumps around like a video game character lmao
Its actually that Chida disengages around the blade so he had right of way. After touch came the parry and touch by Cassara so the call was good seeming how it is difficult to tell on whether or not that Chida after the disengage was doing a reprise or not. Since in reality it may look like a straight disengage attaque, but since it almost looks as if he did a reprise, there is difficulty.
I agree. It was the initiation of a compound attack with the first beat by Ota and subsequent touch.
Finally the answer to samurai VS Roman legionarie
Just started fencing myselve. Really exited to learn, and hopefully get good some day.
Practice 1hr everyday and try not to lose 15-0 on your first DE like I did. Good Luck!
Im just starting
fencing and this is awesome
Now how is it?
Fencing is a great sport! My daughter plays it and she loves it. If you didn’t know fencing is one of the least dangerous sports, but they use foils which are sword like. 😳
司会が選手呼ぶ時 日本とイタリアでテンション違いすぎるだろ笑
21:11 I had someone ask me once if the duck was legal. From the commentary, it seems that the only question in legality is whether or not the head is tilted to display unprotected target to the opponent.
Gotta love that exchange at 1:19:20
Yeah, that decision completely boggles the mind. Even if he did jumped off the piste, that was AFTER the touch and no infractions are readily seen. Perfectly valid counter attack.
Whoa these guys are crazy good! Joining in on the discussion earlier on, my club charges 200 dollars for 3 months of tuition, and they have classes 5 nights a week (including wednesday, which is just bouting, no instruction)
Genial todo el partido, un deporte sumamente emocionante.
IoFaust Haces esgrima?Yo hago hace 2 años
It is adorable how they do little fist pumps after every hit.
No in this case it does matter - it looks like Baldini's first riposte over the back fails, which means priority goes back to chida, who scores. It should have been Chida's hit, since Baldini's first riposte failed to land, and he didn't take a second parry.
Fencing is not, and never has been "sword-fighting". Flexible blades have their drawbacks, they offer less control to the fencer, but it is easier to flick, or do a coupé. A stiffer blade has drawbacks as well, it can be more difficult to flick etc..., but it is also offers more control with your disengaging.
It's so disappointing that at high level bouts in Finals, there are always so much miscalls and directing that directly impacts on the options of the fencers. This could have been a much more interested match.
Watching this because the current Men's Team Final isn't available anywhere else 💀
Refer to the technical rules
t.10. The PIL position ... fencer’s sword arm is kept straight and the point of his weapon continually threatens his opponent’s valid target...
t.56. 3b) If the attack is initiated when the opponent is ‘point in line’ (cf. t.10), the attacker must, first, deflect the opponent’s blade...
Also Casara did not start a compound attack. No feint.
t.56. b)The compound attack (cf. t.8.1) is ... when the arm is
straightened in the presentation of the first feint...
i really don't know why but "Nobody Else" by Dusky played over this bout is actually pretty awesome!
Fencing begins at 3:28.
coolest match ever
That parry riposte flick at 10:38 is so clean...
i love fencing
In love with the first two seconds lol
semoga italy menang dan dapat juara piala emas london
Baldini was shafted in 08. Glad he got a W here.
hopefully ill be on the olympics some day
Well... it IS after halt. The Halt was a split second right before the hit. Maybe you can argue that the Ref isn't very consistent in calling halts.
Oh... and this one too.
t. 56. 2d) Actions, simple or compound, steps or feints which are executed with a bent arm, are not considered as attacks but as preparations, laying themselves open to the initiation of the offensive or defensive/offensive action of the opponent (cf. t.8.1/3).
Casara tends not to lunge and keeps his blade close to himself. It is in the grey area of attack or preparation debate but it is good that referees are calling these hits whereas a decade ago it's never valid.
Fencing evolved from the Use of the Rapier. Which was used primarily as a piercing weapon.
Fencing was just the practice of it. Which over time as swords were phased out Fencing became a recreational sport or Martial Art.
I am pretty sure anyway.
I met him before at my fencing place he autograghed my glove😂
Who?
Japan is killin' it.
***** I posted it when they were winning.
+Legio XXI Rapax 🤔 but they lost in the team foil bronze medal round to the US.
Legio XXI Rapax don't get me wrong bro, Italy rules fencing lol
yea they killed themselves
especially in foil, italy is the best.
It means that the fencer hit the other, but not in the metallic vest area that is valid target area. Basically the attack is off target.
I like how Avola's shoes really stand out XD
hmmmm
nice game..
i love fencing
FENOMENI.
YAAAAASSSSSS ITALY!!!!!!!
"Fencing is not, and never has been sword-fighting."
Oh really?
You're forgetting that foil was originally developed as a training weapon for the smallsword.
"Flexible blades have their drawbacks, they offer less control to the fencer, but it is easier to flick, or do a coupé."
Super whippy blades offer no point control. Also, I actually find it quite easy to do a coupe with a stiff blade, provided you do it correctly. Flicking is utterly ridiculous, you couldn't flick with an actual sword.
1:03 someone please tell me the name of that amazing song seriously I can't get enough of it!
Hamad Althani "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin, off their Physical Graffiti (1975) album. Note that what you hear in this video isn't the original song itself; it's a remixed arrangement, probably to avoid licensing fees
Dave Hooper It's the David Garret version from his Rock Symphonies album
ahhh...do not get bored!!
I love how Baldini slowed down Ota.
the coaches in perfect sync at 16:06 LMFAO
Some people thought it did against standard, and also, a lot of people were starting out with pistol, which made their technique very flawed.
If you put sharps in the hands of Fencers, it is 'sword fighting'. Fencing developed from schools dedicated to very real sword play so to say that it is not 'sword fighting' is really splitting hairs to an obtuse degree. It is what it is, though the rules of the Sport have given birth to a variation much like Olympic Judo removes certain lethalities ... it is no less a fighting art.
Actually even with real blades (think longswords) they also have a fair degree of flex when captured with high speed cameras.
The issue with sport fencing becoming less "sword fighting" like has to do with the elements of sports i.e. if you fall down on the piste, they will call a halt whereas in a duel, you'll become instant shish kebab on the ground reducing the need for a proper balanced form in favour of a more athletic and aggressive/responsive stance.
As a foil fencer Italy’s second point should not count. Correct me if I am wrong but if you perry while still moving back you still do not have the right of way. A perry has to be a forward motion, and I watched it in 25% speed to be sure, and that perry was still followed by moving back
No he came off the party as he stopped IMO
01:19:20 is a lesson of foil.
EIN SPORT, DER MIR VIEL FREUDE BEREITETE.
Wheres Nicola lu min???? Hes really gd..........I know him my dad and him r good friends........I wanna see him out there!!!! ;)
I agree with you. . .
The only problem is, given the way most people "fence" these days, the blades would most likely break due to people literally running into them.
And yeah, most "fencing" has degenerated into a game of poke the other guy with a car antenna to turn the light on.
Call it stupid as much as you like, you will never understand it, probably because you're to dimwitted to understand the art of fencing and the dedication it takes to go out on a strip and face another person with a potentially deadly weapon in your hand. I'm a fencer and it hurts more than a stab to hear people say it's stupid before they know what the sport actually is.
43:48 was like a samurai!!! amazing!!!
I think it'd be better for the sport if the blades were mandated to be less flexible. It's becoming less sword fighting and more trying to make the pretty light go off. As for the pistol grips, they'd be less effective if the blades were stiffer and the flick less possible.
Its actually pretty stiff, but the forces on the blade are you strong that it would break if it wouldn’t be that flexible.
Also easy to forget how much grip strength you need to consistently flick.
1:16:00 that seems bs that even a hit on the arm is considered a valid hit if it is presumed to be because of a wet jacket. What is the point of even reviewing it then?
is it just me or is sabre much more agressive than foil and epee?
It very much is
I want to start fencing soon but covid has ruined that for me. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips for beginners ?
Focus on fundamental moves and ideas for the first bit, don’t get to complicated and try to perfect your footwork as much as possible in the same time because it helps a lot down the road and good luck 👍🏻
@@totproductions2871 thank you!
Focus on perfecting en guarde and basic footworks first. Makes your life easier, I learnt that from the hard way
it may look like that but if you see it in slowmo you can see they are doing some actual sword fighting techniques
Unfortunately it was Baldini's fault imo for calling/testing it on the front of his bicep whereas it was closer to his tricep. It would have made more sense too considering the proximity to the armpit as one of spots with high concentration of sweat glands in the human body.
I agree that at 0:22:51 that was horrendously bad. I've no idea how he manages to interpret it that way.
So many blown calls here. 4 by my count. 2 on Chida, 1 on Mazuki and 1 for Ota.
9:53 looks like baldini is flipping off miyake or the cameraman lol
this is madness!
The Kashmir entrance tho
awesome
22:52 Cassara clearly parries after Chida hits. Wrong call.
wow amazing
Doesn't matter which came up first provided the lights both came up.
At 44 mins it appears to me that Chida got the first touch on Baldinis thigh before Baldini then got a touch on Chida - the call should have been off target - no dice. Some very odd calls in this entire match.
I mean the italians INVENTED fencing....what did you expect?!
36:18 bro tried to flick as a remise
BALLLLLLDOOOOO
Why he get a red card at 1:10:46???
a decade late lol! but he got it for ducking
The first match seemed to be like 70% feints :3
I mean, they are trying to make the position to attack. As soon as someone messes up, you go for it.
it's called strategy, my friend.
too true
Just remember to keep your stance firm and weight centered. You will fall over if you don't. (I'm in the fencing club at my college)
It is hard to keep your form when everything is sped up!
