Gotta hand it to Alaeeldin of Egypt, he's a damn good foilist and I love the way he applauds Sheng Lei afterwards. That to me is a fencer who has great respect for his fellow competitors.
Lei Sheng's coach you speak of is Haiben Wang who is a former Olympian himself (got silver medal in Sydney 2000 in the team Foil event against France with a close score of 44-45). He is also listed in FIE's Top 100 list.
@@commanderfox6143 actually I was taught how to use two swords in fencing using 1 as a parrying sword at the same time as attacking in a tempo. My school of fencing has old traditions.
Fascinating bout tactically. Abouelkassem was able to neutralize Lei's preparations with his stop hits, but lei was able to turn the bout around with counter time, along with a fabulous counter attack of his own on abouelkassem's flesche.
I have to fully agree with you on this statement. I'm a fairly new fencer and left handed, when I fence others that are more at my level, especially on sabre, it really throws them off, mainly cause where they have gotten use to making attacks to the unarmed arm is, well, now armed. When I fence those on a much higher level, especially on Epee, it doesn't matter because they posses the skill and knowledge in fencing other left handed fencers. So yes, we only have advantage at lower levels
Such a good competition. They were certainly a match for each other, abouelkassem was intimidating to say the least. The Chinese competitor’s reach and confidence helped, but it was close enough to be a true showcase
Wow, this really takes me back to my days of fencing in highschool, and reminds me just how screwed I was as a right-handed person, haha. It's just numbers, you'll never fence as many left handers as right handers, putting left handers at an advantage to right handers. I even went a few weeks fencing left handed just to see if I could force myself to do it, but it went terribly.
I too was for a long time struggling but after a while you find that it is actually not that bad. Wherever they can hit, so can you. The best place I find is under their sword arm. Many lefties seem to leave it unprotected. Then if they can parry in Octave/Seconde you just disengage or break time to get around that. Simple in theory, bloody hard in practice!
Same logic as boxing! Not that left-handedness is inherently superior, but by virtue of there just being less southpaws means you normally have an advantage
Angela Zhou If you want to improve your reflexes fencing is a sport that will do that for you. However like any sport you will notice improvement over time and the more miles you put in, the quicker you become better.
Wish Abouelkassem had gotten 1 more point at the end which would've put them at 14-14 with finally Lei winning the match. Would've been more epic and props to both the Lei and Abouelkassem. Great match
Why is the title spoiling it!? Did not know they used this tech, that's awesome. I'm so confused by the beeping when there is no light showing. And why is the commentary so low?
I fence foil as well and I have fenced many left handed people and let me tell you something, it may not be easy however you can beat them. The skill is what truly matters since all that is needed to beat a lefty is to fake into position four then disengage into position six. You just need to attack your attacks more to the right decisively and its as easy then as getting a point. You can also flick on them as well so you can't say he necessarily has a large advantage.
I’ve broke some fingers in my right hand over the years (not by fencing, obviously), but I’ve found that you can really learn a lot by taking some time fencing with your non dominant hand
yu can get the blades with a certain amount of flexibility. if you notice that especially with lie the blade whips up to your opponent and catches them off guard. the blade also can move faster if wielded right...
Sadly, Abou-M did not parry with his forte, and Sheng beat with the intermediate of foilble and forte, making the attack look even more like the priority. That was why the Egyptian hesitated in asking for a replay.
Yes. But, as stated from Globitsky's book, lefties only have an advantage in beginner/intermediate performance. Most people don't fence enough lefties to realize they're almost the same, with some exceptions in bladework, and as a result, distance and tactics. At the top level, the number of lefties increase due to their experience against righties, so they get farther.
You're confusing a number of issues that can be very complicated if you don't understand them. Google "fencing marching attack" and this may help you. There should be no disagreement with any foil referee over 4:16.
You’re right, Extending isAttack. But look at the situation. Also Marching is Attack. Marching without extension by today’s convention is a threatening action, because the attacker is “threatening”, though he “pulled”. Reason=by time the defender attacks into the prep, the attacker’s already lunging at the critical distance. Defender’s almost always counter attacking, since there’s no hesitation by the attacker yet, hence no tempo loss. Sheng did not pull back, it’s withheld.
Lei's blade is indeed parried. However, the parry arrives during Lei's beat, both blades contacted with opposing force. In this situation, the initiative stays with the attacker.
4:16 is really clear. The chinese fencer is attacking, the egyptian fencer is counterattacking. The egyptian fencer attempts to block out the attack with the counterattack but is unsuccessful.
At lower level tournaments, lefties have an advantage because many righties are not as used to having to fence a lefty. It all has to do with where the blade is and where the target area is open. This gives many lefties an edge because they are used to fencing someone with the opposite hand, since they do it all the time, but many righties are not as well adapted. So those who are left handed tend to get further.
Another thing is that his oppenent in this gold medal match was also left handed so there is no way you can say that being left handed is an advantage.
22:13 Red does not have right of way. They both beat the blades at the same time with similar force, convention is that this is given as a beat attack to the attacking fencer. The chinese fencer was attacking so he gets the point
Can anyone tell me why at 4:16, EGY has right of way yet CHI still get a point? The Egyptian straighten his arm first and the red light registered before Lei lunges.
It was Green that had ROW. His attack was not parried and the attack did not fail. Red on the other hand was retreating and failed to counter/parry Green’s attack therefore not scoring a point
Simple answer, he didn't have the right of way. Lei (green) beated Abouelkassem's (red) blade, thus giving him (Lei/green) the right of way. Abouelkassem (red) just counterattacked after his blade was beated, thus giving him mo right of way
the guy has reach over him .. attackin him will only result in counter attacks and the chinese guy jumping away .. which happened in the last 2 points when he tried to attack and lost .. reach is very problematic since the ring is one dimensional .
+Michael Ing I don't think he realizes how much skill in involved here. It might look like they are just doing fast jabs, but a lot of those attacks are very difficult to do.
+Galimah probably épée. Whilst it is slower than foil or sabre, there are no right of way/priority rules so it is much easier to understand. If both fencers hit each other at the same time, they both get a point.
+Massimo Furlotti as someone who just looked at the basic differences online and then tried watching a bit of all 3 i agree completely. foil is like precision target practice with stopping here and there and sabre is wild slashes trying to get points, epee can be watched and understood from more untrained eyes and more easily be understood what is happening and almost more importantly WHY it is happening (from a scoring perspective). so in short i agree :)
tbh, NO OFFENSE, the judge was kind of biased towards the egyptian side cuz from what I SEE, that did not deserve a red card. And the first yellow card seemed kind of misused.
Idk if you will see this because I’m a year late but basically whoever is attacking gets the point. It doesn’t matter who hits first, and usually the fencer moving forward is attacking and if they hit they have priority which means it’s their point even if the other fencer hits. If the defender parries their opponents blade, they take priority. If the fencer without priority hits, but the attacking fencer does not, then the fencer without priority can get the point. This is called a counter attack. Some people, like lei sheng, attack with their hand down. This baits counter attacks, and it works if the attacking fencer knows they can finish the attack in time.

Cannonhead2 yeah, lefties always wreck our team XD
Bear Merryfield Actually, most people don't realize that a lefties target area is closer to a right-handed fencer because of the inverted angles.
mostly it depends on the fencer if he's left handed or right handed and some coaches manipulate their students to what hand they will use
oh yeah, the target area is closer, bu tif you are used to fencing righties, lefties can really throw you off. Unless your parry 6 is THE SHIT.
