- Valentines Day 2020 my wife give me the "Grow It" Bonsai Seed Kit (from gift republic). In this video I prepare the seeds for germination and get them going, showing their journey for the first 6 months of their life.
The "mixed bonsai seeds" are actually Japanese Black Pine, Silver Birch, Downy Birch and Black Alder.

As I have been asked a lot of questions about this kit (because the instructions are terrible)
I have written this post on my website to hopefully give you a full set of instructions / a full guide/ answer all your questions type thing. - so if you need any extra info, it should be here -

Hey! I followed the instructions and potted up a week ago but I have 3 little sprouts already - should I still put these in the fridge or will it kill them?? Thanks in advance!! Kat x
Your wife seems like a really wonderful person. I'll always have a soft spot for people who gifts plants.
Thanks
Sorry for your loss. I lost my dad a week ago and found this kit in his house, I gifted it to him not so long ago. I'm hoping to produce a bonsai in his memory.
ah man thats awful news, im sorry to hear that. you should definitely grow this kit in his honour for sure!
not sure i heard correctly, but did you say this was the "last gift i ever got from my wife"? if she passed away, then i am so very sorry for your loss...
Thanks Chuck, unfortunately you heard right :(
@@BackGardenBonsai my condolences... it's a lovely thing that you were given these seeds by your wife, i think. if i were you i'd consider planting one or two of the seedlings in the backyard and allow them to develop into full trees!
cheers. this is something i have considered. we will see what happens :)
Sorry to hear my brother. Love to you from Atlanta
@PatrickGregoryDaniels Thank you!
It’s even better that you took time to grow something so sentimental
:) thanks
Gardening takes sooo much patience! I have great respect for people who are able to make videos like these that take months. It is really motivating for beginners like myself to not loose hope :D
Cheers :) yeah its a long process and patience is a tough thing but just keep going and we will all end up with good trees!
My wife got me the same box for my birthday, so this video helped alot for someone who has never done this before. Looking forward to the journey it will bring me.
cheers, enjoy it :)
Really like the way you make videos over time - makes for very satisfying watching!
Cheers Connor, I just like to see the progressions... I wish they would do it quicker in real life. lol
You saved my life. I accidentally threw out the seeds because i didnt knew that seeds were in the small package. After i saw you picking the seeds from packing i ran to my bin and took out .
hahh that would not have ended well! i'm glad you could rescue them
I have this kit and also thought wtf at the instructions. Found your tips website and ended up here. Appreciate the no nonsense approach and video. Will be following and hopefully getting some bonsais for myself. Saw one that was almost exactly as old as me once at a market and never bought it. always regretted that. until...
cheers. just stick at it. your tree will end up better than the one you see at the market.
So sorry for your loss. Thank you so much for this video and for your link with the help of how to use this bonsai grow kit ❤️
Thanks you
Just wanted to say how much I love these videos and how glad I am that I found this channel. Nothing better to unwind to after a stressful day :)
Cheers. Im glad they help :)
You have inspired me to get a new hobby, thanks man! Keep up the good work.
That's great to hear. I hope you get as much joy from it as i do. :)
there is something deep, very special into that gift from your about to pass wife it got me very emotional tnx for the great video wish you the best
Thank you.
For those having issues with seeds growing right out of the package at first (like i did on my first try), put them in a freezer for 2wks and try the seeds again (sometimes seeds need a dormant period of "winter" to trick them into growing). I planted 3 to pick the best one(s) and one gave me a 4th seedling!! 🤭🤭 This video has been pretty hepful with knowledge! My little trees are needing a LST session soon!
Best of luck to everyone else! 😁🤘
Thanks for this, I got the same gift for Xmas and your video is a lot clearer.
Cheers, hopefully yours grows as well as mine!
My granny bought me one of these kits for Christmas and tomorrow I’m gonna start growing it. Me and my granny have loved Bonsai trees ever since we watched the Karate Kid films. I’m sure they take ages most likely years due to it being a tree to get on that level but if it’s something that I will remember my Granny with…then it’ll be special.
very good! i hope you enjoy the process. it is very slow. but its worth it and all fun
I’m gonna start growing mine today … awesome info thanks for sharing
Cheers. Hopefully it all goes well
Thank you, this was so helpful, I’m pretty new to growing from seeds and got this gifted but the packet instructions were so poor!! This is much better, in depth and extensive, nice one!
Cheers. Im glad you found it helpful :)
Dude, she'd be proud of you.
Thanks :)
Thanks a lot for this video, my wife just bought this kit for me and the instructions are really terrible, really helpful :)
Cheers. If you didnt see the pinned comment, check it out. that link should cover anything the actual instructions didnt cover :)
It's funny how I got the same bonzai seedling that emerged as like yours in this video.
Very good. I hope yours are growing as strongly 👍
Thanks man, this was helpful. I was also struggling with the instructions here.
Cheers, glad its helped :)
I really love the mood in your video's!
Cheers :)
Interesting mix. Will be interesting to see the progress. I always take the traditional wisdom for seeds floating vs sinking with a grain of salt. I've always heard that too but have had plenty of floaters germinate and sinkers do nothing.
Cheers bro, I think salting that traditional wisdom is the way to go. Its literally zero additional effort needed to just plant them lol. #floatersforthewin
what a good job ... from the seeds you will have a beautiful bonsai. several other years👍😀😀
Cheers. yeah I now have loads of new trees to enjoy for years :)
Nice I can't wait for part 2 Ian ;)
Cheers David, It will be ready in a few days :)
Thank you. I just followed your guide as I found the instructions lacking. I used the pucks for two and used some left over terra professional for the other two seed bags.
Cheers :) I hope they grow well for you
thanks for posting
thanks for watching!
Nice sharing, very educational... 👍👍👍
Cheers :)
Great video and going over to pt2 🪴
cheers :)
I planted mine on new years day and now I have 6 sprouts. Great kit, just follow the instructions. I also had to put it in the fridge for 5 weeks, took it out and put it on the window sill, then 1 week later found the 6 sprouts
Great job!
So yeah, following the instructions on this one actually seems to work fine. 👍
@@BackGardenBonsai yeah.
I was unsure what to do next as this is my first time having a bonsai and the instructions dont actually say what to do after you take it out the fridge (doesnt say how many weeks, whether to keep it in the bag etc) which is why I watched these videos.
Thanks for these vids tho, helped me out a lot! Great to see how your progress is doing
That's a good point, they don't really set you up for any long term care!
just keep watching videos from everyone, you've plenty of time to learn what to do. You just need to focus on growing/keeping them healthy for now
I got some sprouts on my first try, but I managed to let them die :( . I left the bag open and I did not know whether to water them or not, and they dried out. I think I opened the bag too soon. I’m gonna try again with the other bags, and with the alternative method in this video
this was a lovely video
thanks :)
My wife bought me this and I have put the seeds in at least 4 pots. After two weeks (they are still in bags 3 pots have already begun to sprout 🌱
good work! 👍 hopefully they start going crazy like mine
cheers mate im just about to have a go with this kit.I have had a few trees but they always die.
Cheers, hopefully you get some good success with these too
I just received one of those kits as a Christmas gift. Nice to know something might come out of it.. I planted 2 bags last week, following their instructions, so I'll see what happens!
Nice one! just keep following the instructions and leave them in the fridge for the full time and you should see some action soon enough!
@@BackGardenBonsai fun fact, after just over a week on the windowsill I already have 2 shoots popping up. Not sure if it will harm them if I put in the fridge somewhere next week..
Thats cool. I wouldnt put them in the fridge. the whole point of the fridge is to get them to germinate... which yours have done.
you can either just leave the whole pot out, let those two grow and see what happens to the rest of the seeds
...or you can try and remove the two that have popped and put them in a different pot then fridge the rest (huge warning, this is mega risky!!! newly germinated seeds dont like to be disturbed..part 2 is out in about an hour, you will see what can happen when you mess with them)
i'd properly just leave them all out untouched and see what happens with the rest, youve got 2 already, so thats good.
I GOT NO FUCKING SEEDS
damnnn thats not cool. you should email them and tell them
Good experiments. And you've shown that these kits do actually contain viable material - although I agree it's annoying that they call it "bonsai kit" with a photo of a 100 year old tree on the box, when it's basically seeds and coir.
And now you'll have about 50 new trees to maintain and develop! 😉
Cheers Dave, I guess no one would buy them for the cost they are, if it was just a picture of some seeds lol. I also now have more trees than available space, a happy nightmare haha
@@BackGardenBonsai LOL a happy nightmare! when you feel some leaves tapping your face at night in bed, then you know you've got too many trees! 😆
you have no idea how close this is to actual reality hahah
Thanks your idea
Thanks for watching :)
So sorry for your loss. So glad your seeds sprouted. Much love with your 🌳🌲🌴. I'm trying a kit. Instructions useless. Just plant wait basically. Nothing like your kit
Thank you!
hopefully your kit will kick off soon and grow too. if you look in the description i have a link to the extra instructions i wrote, which might help you out if your finding the original a bit lacking lol
@@BackGardenBonsai yes I went to it got mine in bags. I wait 3 weeks then pop in fridge for 6 weeks. Thanks so much for doing that. Much appreciated
I had exact same box I just added water to soil until it expanded put seeds straight in to pots covered with cling film sat at the window had growth in first week this is 3rd never put them in fridge at all I never had to and I have just removed the cling film this week there just at my window 👌🏼x
good stuff!! it sounds like yours are growing well :)
Interesting to see the different success rates 👍
Cheers. wasn't exactly scientific 😂 lol. but its all good fun
Beatifull process..
Inspired for me

@@BackGardenBonsai cheers
I've had better success with stratification by leaving the seeds to the elements over winter. Yet another wonderfully edited video, thanks.
Cheers. I would agree over a natural winter is the best. unfortunately/luckily there is not that long until spring is here, so the fridge was the only option for these guys
How do you set your stuff up because I've got some seeds and I want to leave them to the natural elements but it's my first time so I have no clue on set up
@@BackGardenBonsai how would you recommend to natural overwinter now that we have a winter coming?
@@joncrabb5926 With most seeds I mostly full a seed tray sprinkle on the seeds, cover with a bit of soil (not much). Then I cover the whole thing with a piece of glass from on old green house, stops bird getting at them and helps warm them up early in spring.
JP maples can sometimes take two winters to germinate so I reuse the same one each year.
I’m sure once these little guys get out of this silly refrigerator stage of life they’ll thrive in your hands. Looks like you’ll have a pretty substantial, and very meaningful, addition to the collection in no time. Cheers bro.
-C
Cheers bro. "substantial" is an understatement lol. more trees than i know what to do with now!
@@BackGardenBonsai it’s the only way to be!
Grazie mille per questo video, dalle istruzioni ho capito poco e niente.. seguendo esattamente i tuoi consigli sono nate le piantine 😍
buon lavoro :)
I wish I could have like that too... Bonsai hobbyist here...
You should buy a kit, they are fun :)
I’m sorry for your loss man.
Thank you
Hey, I got this kit for Christmas and I have been following your tutorial since. I'm at the end of the 6 weeks in the fridge, and they have been out, in the bag, for two or three weeks now.
Thanks for that, you made it so easy to follow.
Although I'm a bit confused on the next step. Do I leave the bag close? And do I need to add water?
Cheers. You need to open it gradually over the next few weeks so that it doesnt go from nice warm green house, to cold air of the room. And as for watering, you just have to check and keep it damp, it probably wont need much. If you look at the pinned comment, there is a link. that goes into more detail about what to do and stuff. so it should answer everything you need. hopefully.
Super 👍👍
Thank you 👍
Rooting for the floaters. I was a floater once, they all said I’d be nothing but waste land. Now I’m a fucking oak. And everyone wants my oxygen. 🌳💪🏼
Thank you for this video, helped a lot ❤
I also want to ask what could I do with the left over pots and compost?
cheers. you can anything you want. I think i just chucked mine in the compost. but you could grow anything with them, even if i think they are less than ideal.
@@BackGardenBonsai Thanks again😁👍
Hey man, thanks allot! Be ready to receive new questions the coming days! Why don’t you email the company with a link to your video, offer to make an instructional for them, sure it’ll be appreciated
I was so confused at the instructions when my mum bought this for me now it’s too late to plant the seeds, all I had to do was look it up. I might give it a go anyway
cool. give it a go now. it will be fine to start now, and then keep it inside until spring. it will just have a little headstart, which will do it no harm.
I know this is a dumb question but, when putting the seeds into the soil for the first time and then eventually into to fridge. Do you need to keep adding water to make sure the soil is moist or do you just leave it till after they’ve sprouted?
You shouldn't have to... but you need to still check like once a week, just in case it has dried out. If it has add more water to keep it damp. if its sealed, it probably wont need any, but, just check.
Good luck. i hope you get plenty of growth.
Hi, thanks for the vid. Very informative. Quick question please. Do I need to water them during the 6 fridge period?
Im reading your instructions. Hopefully I'll find my answer.
Thanks.
Cheers hopefully the answer is there, but basically No. you shouldn't need to. just check every now and again, but you should find the soil is damp the whole time
Cheers for the video, great work. Out of my 4 pots 1 has a load of shoots after 2 weeks by the window, after reading through some of the comments I will skip the fridge stage… but my question is should I leave the zip lock bag open slightly at the top permanently now or just a few times throughout the day and close it again fully after that?
Also a few of the other pots have only 1 tiny sprout isit still worth putting in the fridge as more sprouts could emerge?
Cheers
yeah you will have start opening the bag nice and slowly. id start with a few cracks a day and then slowly work it up to leaving it more and more open.
as for the ones you want to put in the fridge. thats the gamble. grow the ones that have sprouted. or kill them off in the fridge in the hope that many more sprout. id probably just grow them out as they are. more still may pop. but only you can decide what to do after weighing it up
@@BackGardenBonsai legend, cheers!
Mine go in the fridge on the 19th
Going to do 6 weeks 😊
good choice! enjoy
Hello. I was just about to put my pots in the refrigerator, when i noticed it had already started to grow (after two weeks in a bag as it says in the instructions). Should i just leave them like they are as the seem to grow or do i still put them in the refrigerator? Very new to this, tips would be very welcome. Thanks!
If they are growing, you dont need to put them in the fridge. everything you will probably need to know is answered here - www.backgardenbonsai.com/an-instructional-guide-to-help-beginners-with-the-grow-it-bonsai-kit/ if there is anything else just ask
My gf gifted me this set for my birth day and after 5 months they finally sprouted, just gotta make sure I don't kill the seedlings
good work, now the fun of watching them grow can begin :)
Hi great videos
Should the pot for the first 2 weeks be in the dark and not on my window sill
doesnt matter. the seeds are under soil. so. they are in the dark regardless.
I have come to the end of the 3 week initial bag period and I have a few small sprouts should I still put in the fridge or skip as they have already sprouted ?
skip it, the fridge will kill those sprouts
About the polythene bag. Do I have to punch some holes in it? Like with a toothpick? Thanks for the help. I am very greatful
no, just open it it a little. it will be fine like that
Did you remove from fridge after 6 weeks? What then?
The kit that I have says I should poke some holes in the transparent bag from the start. Should I? I think those holes compromise humidity but instructions don’t say anything about adding water in 8 or more weeks
I personally wouldnt poke holes, But im sure many people have followed the instructions and been fine. If you look at the pinned comment you'll find a link to my views on the instructions. cheers :)
Hi Again seems like i have a japanese black pine growing and it has got to around 3 months of growth in the starter pots and it snow about 4-5 cm tall - it has another plant growing besides it not sure what type of tree it is, but wdonering whether i need to take the black pine out into its own pot?
well eventually yes they will need separated. the big decision is when. You could do it pretty soon as its nearly spring, so an ideal time ...but the danger is that its small, so risky to mess with it, so if you dont do it now, you would have to next year for sure ..but then can both of them handle being squished into a small pot for another year
id probably do it this year, but be very delicate about the whole operation and try and upset the roots as little as possible
Hi, so I have two that have started coming through and only been in the plastic bag from the box for a week , should they still go in the fridge even if they have started sprouting already?
short answer - no. fridging them after they have sprouted will kill them.
long anwser - read this - www.backgardenbonsai.com/an-instructional-guide-to-help-beginners-with-the-grow-it-bonsai-kit/
An Ulsterman explaining how to grow a bonsai tree is peak ASMR
haha I didnt know this was the sort of thing the world needed
Hi mine has been in the fridge for 6 weeks and only 1 tiny seed has grown from 4 plant pots, do I water everyday and shall I leave outside the front harden in the bag or leave indoors until they've all grown?
Thank you 😊
have you taken them out now? im sure more will pop soon. Water when ever they need it. just keep them damp. NOT soaked, or they will drown. Id leave them inside for a few weeks at first, then when its like late spring, and they are a little bigger, take them outside.
At what stage did you take them out of the fridge and out of the bag I haven't put mine in the fridge yet but it has started to sprout 🌱 after 3 weeks do I need to put it in the fridge now
i took them out after 8 weeks? what ever the instructions said. lol. then i pretty much kept the bag closed until i seen sprouts then opened it slightly, and every few days opened it a bit more/ started pulling it down. So that it was slowly adjusting to the humidity in the room.
If yours are sprouting i wouldnt put them in the fridge. the fridge is to imitate winter, so when you remove them, they think its spring and grow. If yours are already growing, they dont need this trickery.
Hello I’ve had mine in the pots for 2 weeks now on the window ledge in bags they have become seedlings do I still need to put in the fridge ?
if they are growing, dont put them in the fridge. they will die in there
What are you sprinkling on top of the last trial?
I got a similar, yet much cheaper kit. Just 6 spruce seeds, which I didn’t soak or refrigerate-just planted in a very small pot that unfortunately doesn’t have drainage-3 have popped up tho!!! I plan to move them to better draining pot, but not sure how long I should wait? Or what soil mixture to use…I have perlite?
And last question, I promise lol I hoped to grow these inside, but what should I do for winter? Do they need a cold period?
Sorry for all the questions..I’ve been growing succulents and tropical plants for years successfully and wanted to try my hand at this. Probably should have started with a succulent bonzai 🤦🏻♀️ but now I’m committed haha
If anyone has answers, please help 🙏
im just sprinkling more soil on top. it just looks funny as its dry ...also its bonsai soil, so probably why it looks different. although if you have grown succulents you might be using something similar. its just molar clay, perlite and a dash of compost.
give this a read for more about soils - www.backgardenbonsai.com/a-general-guide-to-bonsai-soil/
Also good work on getting some spruce to grow, id let them grow a bit before translating into something else. maybe when they are a couple of inches tall and you wont break them when you try and move them.
As for indoors. not ideal, spruce will need cold. read these two, and you should get some idea on what needs done/why
www.backgardenbonsai.com/what-are-cold-hardy-bonsai-trees/ and www.backgardenbonsai.com/how-to-protect-your-bonsai-trees-over-winter/
sorry lots of links, but bonsai is all about learning. the more you know. the better :)
wait I kept the bag open because I thought they needed like air do I have to keep them close all the time or is it just to protect it from direct sun
close the bag at the start to keep the air ...well more importantly the moisture in. when they grow you will need to start opening the bag, so they can grow in a more normal climate. the bag basically a mini green house, so it doesnt need to be airtight or anything, its just to help keep things humid.
After soaking the soil per the instructions, do I have to continue to water it daily during the 2 week and 6 week fridge period?
You will probably find its fine.
The fact it is in a bag usually means the water cant escape, so it will stay wet the whole time.
I would still check every few days though, to make sure and water if need.
..then when its actually growing you will need to check daily to see if it needs water or not.
Well at least they germinated, I have read so many reviews that seeds do not germinate lol
Cheers. I am sure that it is all down to their crap instructions mixed with humans not being patient. too many "ive had this for 2 weeks, why hasnt it grown?" going on lol.
hi bit of a silly question but i planted it about a week ago and put it in a twilight place and it has begun sprouting, do i still need to refridgerate and whatnot because its growing already? thanks
'
no you will kill them if you fridge them. just miss that step
hi, my son and i are doing these kits separately at the same timescale. after nearly three weeks his pots have germinated just on the window cill. I put mine in the fridge before I knew what had happened to his seeds. I, ll experiment again, but mine will now stay in fridge. As my son,s have germinated, there can,t be any reason for him to fridge his pots?
thats great you are both doing this. but yes. if they have germinated, they dont need to be in the fridge, you can just let them keep growing
I planted a blue spruce and they just started to sprout when do I know to put fertilizer in
I wouldnt worry about it until its a year old
My wife also got me this as a gift I planted into the coconut thing and left it on the side after a few days they all started popping up. That’s why the fridge thing confused me
yeah if they start growing its all good. it seems to happen for a lot of people, but they dont really explain that potential outcome very well :s
I've failed bonsai trees twice before they even germinated 😂 but I have waited a year or so and I'm tryi g again on my 3rd attempt after doing more research.
good luck. im sure this time will be the success!
@@BackGardenBonsai thank you
Ngl I thought I was buying the tree whole, like the picture 😂😂
I dont think you are the only one
Hi bud, I’m ok the stage where I’m going to take them out the fridge, no life yet though. You didn’t mention what you did with them once you brought them out of the fridge? Inside? Outside? Shed? Light?
yeah i just kept them inside. and just put them somewhere where they can get some light. they dont need full direct sun
i bought jeruselem pine seeds and the instructions tell me to wrap the seeds in damp cotton and refrigerate. it then tells me to check the seeds regularly and keep it damp. it says when i see signs of growth i can then plant it. can someone please explain what i have to do i am a bit confused thanks
are you confused why? or the how?
if its the why, its because the fridge makes the seeds think its winter, so when they come out they will think its spring and wake up and grow.
as for the how. do what it says. gets some damp kitchen paper and hold it over the seeds. put this in a sealed back and put it in the fridge for how ever long its says. then after a while start checking like once a week to make sure it is still damp and when the root comes out, plant it.
this is the method i normally use. the kit in the video says to do it differently, they put the seed in the soil and then put the whole lot in the fridge. its really the same difference.
So I put it straight away on my window seal for 2 weeks, inside the plastic bag. It has a pine and some sprouts. I'm just now putting it in the fridge, is that ok?
If they have already sprouted, you dont need to put them in the fridge. The fridge is to trick the seeds into thinking its winter, so that when you remove them...they think its spring and start growing. If your seeds are already growing, you dont need this.
I did the 2 weeks resting and then 6 weeks in the fridge. What should I do now? Do I need to remove it from fridge? Where to store and how often (if) to water?
What do the instructions say? I cant remember, if says 6 weeks, do that.
Take them out and put them in a well lit spot. If youve had them in a bag, leavethem there. They should still be damp. Just keep checking it every other day and give it a few drops of water if if it isn't looking damp.
You should see some green pop up. once they have popped, you can crack open the bag and over the next few weeks, slowly open it more and more until its gone. watering at this time is the same, check it and keep it damp throughout. NOT wet, just damp
do I have to put it in the fridge like is it just to help it have a good start but u don’t really need to
its to give it "winter" so it follows the natural cycle of seeds. might grow without it if they have been stored somewhere cold, but really it will maximise your chances
Tried to add a photo but there doing great x
Hi thanks for the video but i have a question, when i put the seeds in fridge do i put it with the bag or do i put it in a box or without the bag?
in bag. so they should be sat in a bag for a few weeks before, just put the bag in the fridge. no need for any extra boxes
Hi, I was just wondering because I am up to the stage where you put it in the fridge. Did you water it gradually or just leave it dry whilst in the fridge
it should be damp always. you should check it in the fridge, but you will probably find it just stays the same. it probably wont dry out, but of course check every few days to make sure.
Hello, just wondering after i take it pit yhe fridge can i leave it inside or does it need to outside?
they will need to go outside eventually, but you could do either for now.
Just put mine in the fridge and already have sprouts but where should i put it once its out the fridge?
If you've already got sprouts you don't need to keep them in the fridge. the fridge is designed to get them to germinate, which yours have done! you should leave them some where bright, not direct sun as they will just melt (well it will be too strong for them) id keep them inside for a few weeks, then once they get a bit bigger and stronger and its like late spring, take them outside
had one of these as a gift for Xmas.. the seed were mixed grasses from what I could tell from the instructions.. and nothing grew..at all...
I see, that doesnt sound great. im guessing it was a different brand to the one i have?
Just started growing mine from the same kit, they are starting to sprout after 3 weeks but without bagging them or fridging them I just left them in a glass cabinet which got a little sunlight but not too much and kept the soil moist, what else should I do now they are sprouting?
ah cool. Im guessing the glass cabinet acted like a green house. Sounds like everything is going to plan. id just keep doing what your doing. give it light and keep it moist and they will keep growing. You will probably need to transition them at some point, but id give it a month or so yet until they grow a little bit more
@@BackGardenBonsai legend
Hi back garden, where do it keep the plant when it is out of the fridge like where would the best place to put it be.
just put it on a windowsill. it should be fine there
Thanks for the response, also what would you recommend for watering it
2:35 I received a bonsai kit last year for Christmas. I haven't done anything with it because the instructions say to use seed heating mat for best results. Due to unexpected vet bills and a couple of personal tragedies this year, I haven't been able to purchase a seed heating mat.
Why would your kit say to do the opposite? That is, put the planted seeds in the fridge?
3:11 what did you do about the mold? Did you add cinnamon to it? That's one of the "popular" suggestions on YT. I've tried before with regular gardening, but it was pretty much useless. I could have done something incorrectly, though.
it will depend on the seeds your kit has. but basically all you are doing is replicating nature ...inside. i would say you wouldnt need a mat. you can just place them somewhere warm.
my kit contains trees that go through winter and that is all the fridge is doing. if you look at nature -seeds fall in autumn - sit in the cold over winter - sprout in spring. the fridge is just giving them a fake winter. when you take them out, they think it is spring as it now feels warm and they grow.
as for mould, i just picked it off. its pretty harmless if it just on the soil like i had it.
I'm just wondering what to do if it doesn't seem to sprout after the fridge stage
leave it a while longer and see what happens. so long as its not too wet. or too dry it should happen. If it doesnt you can try and put it back in the fridge was 6 weeks again and try again
This question may sound dumb but can the types of trees in the kit be able to survive if it is grown in places near the equator?
I dont know. Ive not been that far south, so I am not fully sure what can actually grow there. I dont see why not. The issue will be when it comes to winter. They all need a cool period and i have a feeling the temperature doesnt chnage that much throughout the year at the equator?
Started my kit as well I'm kinda freaking out that 3 of the plants I have has a thin layer of white fuzz I just reached my 2nd week and now it's in the fridge now for 3 to 6 weeks. Does that white fuzz kill the plant?
short answer, just remove the fuzz, but its harmless.
long answer read all this. www.backgardenbonsai.com/an-instructional-guide-to-help-beginners-with-the-grow-it-bonsai-kit/ it should keep you more on track than the instructions.
Hi I'm where should I put the pot in the fridge:
Back middle or front?
it doesnt matter, just wherever its out of your way
Did you use any fertiliser or just what came in the box? Thank you
you dont really need to worry about fertilising seedings. you can pretty much ignore that for the first year
What’s happens if you get seeds sprouting before the 6 week method? Do you still place in a fridge?
no, that will kill them. just skip that step and let them grow
