I've been a landscape designer and selective pruning specialist, for the last 22 years. So naturally I wanted to pick up bonsai, I started bonsai about 11 years ago and I am still learning. This is an art form that takes tons of patience, perspective, and willingness to learn from the mistakes you have made along the way. And by learning the bonsai art form, I realized a lot about life that I had no idea was connected to bonsai. I know nobody here knows who I am, but in a nutshell, practicing the art of bonsai, change my perspective on life, and rectified the path I was going down. And then I find this channel.... The way he explains everything, the tone of his voice, even when ideas pop into his head and he voices them out loud he makes you feel as if you were in the room and it was just a conversation between you, him, and the bonsai. And I'm learning all kinds of new tricks I'm getting all kinds of new ideas. Thank you bonsai heirloom for this channel
Before I became disabled I was an avid gardener. After thirty or so year, I had planned on learning bonsai and begun to study it. Life had other plans. To say I loved my plants is not an exaggeration. To me they had a presence which I found both humbling and healing. To watch a plant grow from seed or seedling to maturity, the emergence of new leaves, the opening of a blossom, the emergence of fruit, the end of the plants lifecycle taught me things about myself which I still carry with me. It certainly helped me deal with the suddenness and severity of my disability, as well as other hardships we all experience as part of being human.
In my younger days of Bonsai growth, I was able to go to the local nurseries and get all their "ugly" potted plants for a song. Then they caught on and I had to work for them to be able to afford the raw materials. I haven't worked on any for over thirty years now. My wife is telling me to get my behind a moving to start up again. Like your channel and I will keep coming back to enjoy your work with you. Stay safe.
You and I have the same strategy! At bonsai auctions, I go for the trees that look like they have potential instead of the very nice looking ones. I hope you will start doing bonsai again! It is a great hobby!
Yeah I used to be able to find old gnarled rootbound junipers and Chinese elms and other stock in the back of nursery's or some overgrown corner of their shade houses and get them for like one or two bucks, they'd be happy to get rid of them usually. Now it seems alot harder to find them or they hear bonsai and want an arm and a leg for them, or slap em in a bonsai pot themselves roughly without proper training or anything and call them bonsai and charge a premium. Which is always disappointing. That said though there does seem to be more good quality pre-bonsai stock around my area than there used to be too. That's had some initial work done and don't tend to have all the problems that nursery stock can have like reverse taper and all so ita a positive i guess. But I do miss that sort of a treasure hunt vibe I'd get before and finding those hidden raw gems.
@@iamshredder3587 The urban tree hunt is most diffidently a missed adventure! I would have loved to bring my son on these trips of discovery. Take care and stay safe.
I'm just beginning a tree myself. My very first one. Sometimes I reflect on my age, nearly 72, and wonder how long I'll be around to see results. But then I realize that this art is not about me. If I manage to succeed in the early stages, my tree could be in another's care, as is your sublime Juniper. Your work is truly incredible, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn from you here!
Hey, I'm still doing bonsai at my age! And yes, bonsai is also about passing down your heirloom to a loved one who will continue to care for it. I plan to pass down my bonsai to my family.
I love the bonsai tree. My mother had 2 for over 40 years, one old and one she created herself out of 5 oak seedlings on a hill orientation. Both lived in the garden near her bedroom window. Within a month of her passing away both trees began to falter and 6 months later had died completely. I took the to a specialist who said they were both very healthy but were mourning my mother. So so sad. I have enjoyed your video and will certainly consider getting one myself
I really enjoyed the gentle passion of the artist shape the delicate tree with trying to smash the pot and then use his reciprocating saw to shape the root system. My man!! On a a more serious note, I really enjoyed watching and learning.
Bonsai is an art, it is painting a picture of nature using nature and it takes an artist to do that. Unfortunately I am no such artist but I can enjoy and appreciate the creations of others :).
Thank you for this amazing bonsai tutorial. Your an inspiration to us all & naturally I have subscribed & look forward to many more lessons from you. Bless you Sir.
What a spectacular tree ..has an amazing shape once the foliage pads are grown out....... Wow what a tree... I think the planting angle is perfect that you picked
An exquisite tree in two years, as you say! I can see it. I hope you will keep us abreast of the tree’s development in your design. This is fascinating work that you do. I hope good success in your progress, your good health, and every good blessing!
A very nice tree Ive been growing pre bonsai for the last 6-7 years although have had bonsai on and off since the 1980’s . A real artform , youtube tutorials like this really help me and others
This tree has such an intriguing shape that I'd find really difficult to choose the orientation to keep. I think also the slanted one at 7:00 would be a nice one, with the apex guided to grow along that direction

Hi from New Zealand. You are a very clever man. The tree looked very scruffy before you gave it some serious attention and now it looks amazing. Enjoyed your tutorial. Very beautiful specimen. My thoughts are that it could have been a longer pot and in the future adding one or two smaller trees under it. Final thought would be to put it in the ground elevated above a koi pond.
it would have been pretty to see that trunk drop bellow the pot and the tree straightened up. I found surprising the angle that you choosed but also I liked it very much too. looking forward to see the result when it will be ready to be shared. all respect
Right at the end of the video at the 22:46 where you had your hand on the bonsai I was looking at the angle and noticed that if you were to remove that long horizontal arm-like branch that extends all the way out, what your left with is a much more smooth "S" shaped curve. At first I really like that extending branch and it still looks amazing but the way it will look without it is even better. You will see what I mean if you just look at the image where your posing with the bonsai and just cover that branch with your hand and look at how much better it looks.
So intereating and a lovely tree. I enjoyed the process and tour explanation of what you are doing. Subscribed because I want ro see what happens next.😊
I loved the video. And you are easy to follow and it helps us in showing just how it is done properly just in case we want to try. You are quick to cut branches which is something a beginner I am sure would be scared to do. But it looks regal.
Ahhh, the skilful use of the traditional Japanese reciprocating saw.

Hai! though i would have used a Makita.

if old folks cringe at soil they will faint at electric saw
Everytime I've seen someone transplant: "Make sure you're careful not to damage the roots."
Bonsai Heirloom: "So I grabbed my reciprocal saw..."
Its actually better to tear up with the root ball a little bit it encourages the roots to grow out more.
How I felt the 1st time I seen someone take hedge trimmers to a cannabis plant
How to turn a Bonsai into a Bonsai. :)

This was so great! I wish I had your skillset, this looks like such a fulfilling hobby
You can do it!
So intereating and a lovely tree. I enjoyed the process and tour explanation of what you are doing. Subscribed because I want ro see what happens next.😊
Really enjoyed your video. Thank you.
I loved the video. And you are easy to follow and it helps us in showing just how it is done properly just in case we want to try. You are quick to cut branches which is something a beginner I am sure would be scared to do. But it looks regal.
Thanks so much!
Wow what an amazing tree! You sir are an artist with much talent.
Thank you so much 😀
