The great thing about this is that at a young age they were able to work hard for what they have and want, obviously it stuck with them and are successful because of it. Children now a days feel entitled to everything because their parents give them everything and dont understand how to work for what they want.

A Native American from the continent of America. The people already here before 1492 whose descendants speak a European language called Spanish. Hispanic is a European term for people from the Iberian peninsula. When Africans only speak English they don't stop being African and all of a sudden become British or Britanic? No. So Native Americans don't stop being Americans just because they only speak a European language imposed on their ancestors. This is how others impose an identity on other people and make them feel they are foreigners in theit own land. They're not Hispanic. They are Native Americans who speak Spanish. From Alaska to Chile Native Americans speak English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and millions still speak American languages like Nahuatl, Quechua, Aymara, Navajo and others. They are all still Americans regardless of language.

American Why do you need to make that distinction? You are an American who happens to have Mexican ancestry. Just like black Americans. They are Americans who just happen to be black. Just like me. I'm an American who happens to have Slavic ancestry. I'm not trying to tell you who you are, even if it seems like it. I'm just confused as to why so many people say things like that. I'm "fill in the blank" American. I understand wanting to have a connection with your heritage, I get that part. I just don't get why making that distinction. Do you mind explaining it to me? I genuinely want to know.
I feel that making that distinction is partly to blame for the "us vs them" crap going on in this country. Almost like it gives people the excuse to dehumanize their fellow Americans.

I'm 44 and came here from Brasil, worked on aviation industry for 10 years, got laid off from work then father passed away now pandemic and unemployed. While at home taking care of my autistic child which is 17. Now I'm working on getting my A&P license. I guess life is not that hard. Wish me luck.

What an inspiration...at 10 years old all it took was his dad’s validation “I believe you can do it” to stick to his dreams and pursue them. Then the support of his teachers and loved ones thru out his journey....It really takes a village to raise our kids.

His farming background will not be useful on Mars. Things don't work like that. Earth and Mars are different so don't expect you'll just be digging Mars's ground and plant seeds calling it farming. You'll need people with biology degrees not astronauts to figure out how to grow something on Mars. Astronauts are only good for transporting people and goods in between planets. How to keep something or someone alive on Mars needs someone with biology background.
@@KS-wk6uk Welp farming is actually useful for Mars, you should check out the book "The Martian", it's kinda old but it explains how it's possible for actual plant growth on Mars. Nevertheless, in the soil itself is impossible, but you can grow stuff *on* the soil. A botonists from a University, I forgot which one, he's a prof. there's a vid here on UA-cam explaining how to do it

As the son of Mexican immigrant parents this motivates me so much. I one day wish to be a doctor maybe a surgeon and the first of the family to ever even try to do something like that. He motivated me so much when I first heard about him & when I become a doctor I too hope to motivate other first generation Mexican Americans to follow their dreams no matter how hard it may seem.

My parents made fun of me for wanting to be a marine biologist. I developed a fear of failure and never went to college. Now I'm a 30 something struggling to scrounge up the 1500$ to fix my car's brakes. Right after I just spent 1500 on a refurbished battery for my Prius. The universe knows just how to screw ya. LOL. At least I have a job and a ride to work. Hopefully mumbly joe will get the second part of the second stimulus check out asap.

My parents always encouraged me but I never believed enough in myself..I went back to school and got a Masters in Public Administration to "challenge" and improve myself last year, but I'm still working as a public social service provider..still not making the money, living the life, or ever had the life partner (men I dated were way less educated or just not into much because I felt I couldnt do better)...so yeah I sound good on paper but I really feel stuck. Oh you're right on the "universe knows just how to screw ya" --just when I pay off my car in December, I now need like $3000 in much needed car repairs, dentists needs a couple 1000s, and since I forgot to apply for another school loan so I had to put $4428 on a credit card just to get my diploma 😆... I prolly should've gone into tech earlier or biologist, but I didn't think I would like it or be too hard...but..I;m still learning and improving myself with skillsets..it's just a matter of just following through and believing that I can do it, I guess.

My son and I met him. Very down to earth and humble person. Gave my son very good advice about completing college and following his dreams. Very happy for him as a human being for his accomplishment. Whether you’re white, black, brown, orange, or purple, it shows what perseverance, dedication, and following your dreams can do.

But think how many other deserving people were not selected because NASA is now searching for applicants they can send out virtue signals about. A minority female now has a far, far better chance of being selected, and a heterosexual caucasian who is qualified now has a poor chance.

For everyone watching and getting inspired by this video, remember how smart he was and he still met rejection 11/12 times. He worked hard all his life and studied hard and failed and kept trying. If you have a dream, go out and get it! In your heart of hearts, if it’s an honest dream you have, don’t stop chasing. This is American Exceptionalism at its finest; not some false form of patriotism. Nowhere else is this kind of journey possible. I love his story, and truly respect everything about him - from his first job, to his journey to space, and to his knowledge and wisdom that education is the key to that kind of mobility. And to think, an astronaut, who could admit to imposter syndrome. There’s an authenticity here that is incredibly uncommon. As such, the movie of his story will be compelling. Ahh! I don't think anyone will fully realize how much this story means to me. I've always admired latin-americans for their hard work and strong family relationships, to see them succeed is truly exciting to me! I know what it feels like to fail and when you fail those feelings of not belonging get really, really strong. It's SO easy to give up or postpone your pursuit of dreams and ambitions. Thank you for reminding me once again to believe in yourself!

I actually remember this guy came to our school one day and gave a speech about his life and how we can do whatever we put our minds to if we work hard enough. It was a great speech. It's so cool seeing him on the news.

I think it's so powerful to a child when somebody tells the child they believe in them. It sounds like his father and 2nd grade teacher were two of his greatest supporters.

Keep going, I’m one of a handful of Latinos in my aerospace engineering program at Embry Riddle. Majority of my classes are either white/Asian Americans or foreign born Asian students. In our communities things like education aren’t prioritized, let alone space-travel be prioritized. I understand his doubt syndrome, I doubt myself sometimes and say “do I even belong in here, with all these other engineers”. And to drown out the noise of my thoughts I work hard, I work harder until that thought almost disappears. I’m a first generation immigrant as well, never stop, life isn’t going to be easy on you so don’t be easy on it, go hard when you can and try your absolute best.

His story is truly inspiring. I started working in the fields at the age of 13 and still continue to. For years I hated it, however the fields and my parents have been my biggest motivation to continue my education. Graduating next spring with my bachelors and double minor. And I’m not done yet, voy por más!!

Damn. A parents words of encouragement really affect their kids. He was so inspired by his dad’s belief in him that he never gave up in those 12 years of applying to NASA. My dad told me that he could never see me successfully complete a bachelors in computer science or be in that field. He didn’t mean to hurt me, but those words hurt and they never left me. It sucks when your parent have zero belief in you. Regardless, I went to school and graduated with a bachelors in computer science and now working on my masters in the same field. Never give up, regardless of whether people belief in you or not
