  • As I was doing the final edit for this episode, especially the scene with the hands, I started to suspect some of the animation is rotoscoped. I mentioned this to another animator and he said it is. You can tell because the anatomy is "too" consistent.

    I initially disagreed with you when I was watching the video because the animation is definitely rotoscoped, but I see in the description that you later shifted towards rotoscoping as well.
    I still have to comment thought, that you might have gotten the wrong idea of CG animation. While it takes a lot of work in the pre-production stage ( modeling, rigging etc), once you get to the actual animation, it's much faster than 2D animation. Provided that you're experienced in it.
    It would be much more time efficient to first animate everything in with 3D models and work a 2D papercraft over it, than do both stages in 2D, especially if you have a lot of identical characters. Using the same model saves a lot more time when using identical characters. It would also cut down a lot of time if you wanted to use characters with similar build because you can make one generic model to use for all those characters and then add any more unique features in the 2D stage.
    Sorry for the long comment but I feel like CG animation is a very overlooked and under-appreciated form of animation amongst 2D animators, and combining the two has such great unexplored potential.

      @goldcherries 8 років тому +21

      Yeah I definitely could tell it was rotoscoped because the movement's of the pants and hands are too real. And also I don't understand how she got the idea that rotoscoping is specifically done using 3d animation?? Rotoscoping is usually done with live people, not 3d, hence why it looks "real". Can't say it gives me too much confidence in this channel.

      She actually didn't say it was just done with 3D models/3D animation. She said it could also be done with using live footage of people. (It's at 0:55 )

    I loved that animation, and it felt like it had a neat [not "allegory" I don't think, but close to that?] to it- most of the male attendants of the night club were predatory animals except for the donkey (who looked depressed and uninterested in the women there) and the bull (who is the bouncer, and bulls are a symbol of masculinity and power, but is not there for the women and so wouldn't be interested in the women), while the women were all prey animals. A feast for the eyes, perhaps? Also the actual choices of the animals are interesting. Cats and dogs are obviously rivals, dobermans look like a sophisticated sort of intimidating, and are much bigger than domestic cats. The domestic cats look "common" and a little underwhelming up until the fight scene.
    Another interesting thought is that zebras are pretty tough animals, the zebra waitress didn't even flinch when the snake was about to strike her face. The fox was at the table with a swan. Swans are delicate and very feminine and elegant animals, while foxes are known to be rather tricky and mischievous.
    It felt as though all of the details were very thought out and intentionally placed. This is absolutely just a theory, though, I could be wrong but it's a theory I definitely subscribe to.
    One thing I disliked, though, was the emphasis on the cage dancing. Certainly, it was beautifully animated, but it took away some focus from the power divide between the animals and made a message potentially about sexism look more sexist. Maybe it was to take up screen time, but I think they could have added in a little more closure instead? Oh well!
    TLDR;
    I like the attention to detail in the story itself.

      Gaming Bro & Sis Between their bow-ties, lack of breasts, rather large hands, and whole outfit (shorts + sneakers) I'd say they're male

    • @Crawldragon
      @Crawldragon 8 років тому +17

      Swans appear feminine and delicate, but apparently they're total bastards. Rowing teams have been known to cancel or delay competitions on rivers because a swan was present. They're very large birds, after all; they don't have to take anyone's shit. Given that plus the very effeminate snakes I'd say we're looking at more of a femme fatale scenario.

    • @taegra

    • @Foxtrot369
      @Foxtrot369 8 років тому +5

      The Snakes are wearing red skirts, fur-lined jackets and ladies loafers.
      They have long fingernails _(not claws)_ and very feminine arms and legs.
      They're drinking out of martini glasses while everyone else, apart from the Fox & Swan couple, has shot glasses.
      They're female.

    • @taegra
      @taegra 8 років тому +10

      Foxtrot369 Red shorts, actually.
      And not jackets, vests. Looks like a fur-lined hooded vest, which would denote someone who is into high fashion. (and there are plenty of this type of vest for men) They also have bow ties, and their fingernails are not actually all that detailed. The shoes look a bit like fashion sneakers.
      These details would infer fashion-conscious, effeminate, possibly wealthy (or born into wealth) younger men. The shorts and sneakers make them seem very young and boyish.
      Effeminate does not equal woman.

  • @MoeLestingYou

    I feel like you missed major themes conveyed through symbolism. The Hounds in old-school mobster suits, smoking cigars and drinking brandy are meant to represent the Italian mob and the Russian Blue's (Cats) in letterman jackets are meant to represent the younger Russian Mob moving in on there turf. The other characters represent other sects of life in that ignore this violence until it's too late and it consumes them as well, and at the end of the day, the only constant is the exploitation of women.

    • @drimihq7724
      @drimihq7724 4 роки тому +5

      How do you know so sure and why so specific (Italian mob and Russian mob moving in on their turf)? If you would ask me honestly I'd say they thought: "Oh yeah let's have some action and oh don't forget that it needs to be attractive! Have a woman dancing through it. Don't kill her though, not attractive, man, not attractive."

    Alright this has bothered me for awhile, but most rotoscoping is traced off live action not 3d animation. In fact a lot of old Disney movies used this, and movies like Anastasia. It's why these sorts of animations have uncanny natural almost realistic movement.

    Strange, I could have sworn that rotoscoping referred to drawing the animation over live-action footage. Then again I get all of my animator-y knowledge by inferring things loosely based on what internet videos tell me, so I may be misinformed.

      Chipflake
      Yes, but I had assumed that rotoscoping over live action was basically how rotoscoping is always done. From what Crowne says, it seems as though rotoscoping is primarily done over 3D models and only occasionally done over live-action.

    1:10 They could make a basic armature with the 3D animation then draw over it like that, that way they won't have to do needless animating like facial expressions or fingers in the 3D part so they can save time. Or at least that's what I think you could do with rotoscoping.

  • @Servellion
    @Servellion 7 років тому +1

    *facepalm* Your description of rotoscope animation was so far off it's hilarious. What makes it funny that later you actually do mention what it actually entails.
    Rotoscope has traditionally been drawing on top of live action footage. I've honestly never heard of using 3D models before mainly because the whole point of rotoscoping is to capture realistic movement, something that you'd have to be damned good with 3D animation to get right in the first place.
    I'm honestly curious now if someone has been either dumb enough or confident enough to attempt to do what you mentioned.

    I've always understood rotoscoping to be the act of tracing over the frames of any media which includes both cgi and live action film. After watching the uncanny movement in the video, I would find it hard to believe that it was achieved any other way. It might even be possible that their editing software can automatically isolate and segment sections of color accurately enough to make out features such as hands. That would let you skip tracing and leaves only faces, blood splatter, and animal heads as far as animating goes.

  • @itarfer
    @itarfer 8 років тому +4

    Do better research. Rotoscoping usually IS just drawing over video of live action film. Very rarely does it ever involve 3D models. And not all rotoscoping is smooth. In fact it's usually more of a stop motion style with the typical frame rate people only 10 frames per second. I'm about 90% sure this is rotoscoping.

    Rotoscoping uses live action. Rotoscoping existed BEFORE 3D animation. Its literally named for a device "Rotoscope" that blows up live action footage and projects it so the artist can 'trace' it. I mean, c'mon, where did you get your info? Not a bad video, but that explanation and your ragging on it for not being what it actually IS was cringe AF.

    If you were to compare this animation with certain scenes from Princess Mononoke from Studio Ghibli, where it was confirmed that they did use CGI in tandem with the traditional 2D hand drawn animation to achieve smoother animation, you would be able to make a more accurate guess as to the use of such things in this particular piece. Considering that individuals working on the project did have CGI experience and the similar smoothness of some of the scenes that used CGI from Princess Mononoke with certain parts of this animation, I would say that it does seem that 3D was involved here.

    while I watch your videos I draw, an I draw A LOT and I figured out if you do a lot of dark areas you can actually sharpen your pencil buy doing something I call streaking, witch is where I grab my pencil and press it HARD to the page where there is no light, and soft where there is, but still in a dark zone so that I still have to shade in the area where the drawing I making has still light , do not full black

    *Spoiler Warning* (I guess)
    I find it rather interesting, that the only one survivng is the goatlady. Especially because it seems to me, that she doesn't appear to be bothered by the situation at all. It is like she pulled the strings in the background, visible for everyone but still hidden, similar to the devil in christian religion, who is somtimes depicted as a goat creature, in case you (the reader) doesn't know.

    I find that your placement of the eyes is a little wonky. Try thinning the muzzle, or pushing the eyes upwards/extending the forehead. The feet really bother me, as in some frames I feel like the lower joint is thinner at the top? What?? The paws also look like stubs when in poses other than on the ground. I recommend animal references, animal videos of them moving, and I hope at one point to add more frames to your animations!

    I understand production of your show works a little differently because of the animation, but if you did learn that rotoscoping can be done over "film", and you suspected that was case for this before this was published, it's very disappointing you still published it mostly as is. I imagine you understand it confuses or misleads some of the audience.

    I'm so sure than you know about the animation of "batmetal returns", Maybe someday you can talk about it in your show to know more about that animation?

    The Animation Itself Is Inappropriate

    The video itself felt very... Hotline Miami, what with all the animals in varsity jackets and suits and stuff. It was a pretty great animation.

    I beleave she made a mistake. Rotoscoping is watching live action and transering it to animation. The creator of Betty Boo invented that method in animation. The 3D 2D merging together is called, if i m not mistaken, mix media.
