How To Find The Red Dot On A Handgun | EDC | Learning RED DOTS on Handguns

- In this video I go over a few things that will help you in transitioning from iron sights to a Red Dot when you decide to pull the trigger.
Why should you choose a red dot? First, many like myself have eye sight issues so a red dot will be easier to pick up over iron sights, and secondly, a red dot allows for quicker target acquisition.
The biggest question I get asked about purchasing a red dot is, is it worth it? If you are a dedicated firearms shooter, than yes. If you don't invest time in training and/or struggle with basic shooting principals, I would recommend taking a class first, however a red dot does give you an advantage. It removes the idea that you have to have two sights aligned vertically and horizontally, and replaces it with put the red dot on target and engage. It can be used even by beginners but it will not make you a better shooter. It only helps you acquire your target faster. If you have fundamental issues, a red dot will not fix those issues.

Brother, you have the best content. I’m an old Army dog hard wired for iron sights. Very confident (from years of training) but at 50 my old eyes are not the best anymore. But I just jumped on the red dot bandwagon and ordered a 407 Holosun for my EDC and this video will be part of my daily watch. Not interested in other competition lessons. Your defense focus is what I’m used to and comprehend. I’ll be searching your content for both handgun and carbine info daily. Keep it up brother..
I’m old been shooting iron sights a long time tried to transition to a dot, wasn’t doing well picking up the dot. So I removed the dot and practiced a long time with just the suppressor height sights until my presentation was spot on every time, then I put the red dot back on and sure enough I was picking up the dot upon presentation every time. Because I shot so long with irons my presentation was never right because the dot is such a change in height over bore, so starting with just the taller suppressor height sights fixed my presentation so I could always find the dot once I mounted it back on the gun.
You know what makes you really scary is how calm you are. Extremely mechanical and detached. I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of that pistol. Actually that would make for a great video is how you stay zen. Something us civies could use
Initially, I struggled to pick up the dot at times. Then Sage Dynamics had a video where he said, forget picking up your front sight, just present and press out and the dot will just show up on the target and it worked flawlessly! This might not work for everyone but I think that’s exactly what Jason is saying here too.
Interesting anecdote, I am right handed and left eye dominant which brought some challenges when I shot irons on pistols. I shot in a modified Weaver stance and slightly turned my head. I added a red and green dot on my two pistols and surprisingly, I always end up using the red/green dot with my right eye. When I am threat focused the optic ends up lining up with my right eye as I present and press out. I also shoot MUCH better with a dot. I have a Holosun 507k X2 on my 43X and an EPS Carry green, MRS on my Sig XMacro.
Re-watching 8 months after my first watch. Now a couple thousand rounds through my M18 w/ 509t and have to say this video helped me with transition to RDS more than any other videos.
This guy is a great humanitarian btw also. Making the world a better place in more ways than one!
🙏
The part about not wanting to rebuild your natural point of aim made perfect sense in terms of dot calibration distance in favor of co witness with the front sight.
Your draw is super impressive
You must be watching out for me, after 30 plus years of shooting I've finally given in to the idea of an optic on my pistol. I went with the Holosun 507c ACSS reticle in green. It will be here in a few days and I can't wait to try it out. Thanks for what you do, a lot of valuable knowledge passed on, it has helped me a lot.
I just uploaded a new video on the topic. One more to go on What Zero is Best. Hopefully next week.

The biggest hurdle for most
Is
Acquiring the dot.
As
You press out
Look at your front sight
You
Will find the dot before you have fully pressed out.
Do
A lot of dry firing before heading to the range.
I have that one in Red how do you like it?
@@thtnydude I love it. I have always liked the green color on my fiber optics thats why I went with this version. Pretty close to zero out of the box and only took a few minutes to get it where I wanted it.
Thank you for the video. I’m a pretty accomplished pistol shooter who’s finally trying to make the transition to pistol red dot. It’s been a slow process overcoming two decades of front sight focus. Past 30ish feet, I can see the accuracy advantage but I’m slower at finding the dot at closer distances. It’s a training issue I just need to work on.
That's spot on.. I even measured my HE407c x2 green 2moa dot from my front sight, that has Suppressor sights.
I also really love Tu Lam's Pistol Instructions about alignment of the Dot / Pistol under your Dominant eye as you come up & press out.
I'm new to Dots & that helped me tremendously 🤟

As a retired cop I love your channel!💙
Due to failing eyesight, I installed a Burris Fast Fire on my Ruger GP 100, .357 six inch barrel. I found a company that made rails just for this pistol that could be installed where the existing open sights were attached. Eliminates the need for tapping which is strongly discouraged by Ruger on this particular pistol. It was hard as heck to find that little dot at first but it makes a big difference for bad eyes. Thank you for these pointers. They will make a difference.

This is the best video explaining this red dot approach. Much thanks! I'm going to give it a try tonight.
Thanks and Blessings Jason!
What an awesome instruction thank you. I am 60 and got my first red dot on a pistol. Good shooter, tight groups with iron sights, happy with performance until I got the red dot. Struggling with it, frustrating. Your instruction is the one that makes more sense to me.. I will subscribe and support for sure. Thank you.
If you go to the Red Dot series here on the channel you will find several in depth videos that will explain everything. 🙏
Thanks for this frogman will follow and support. Much appreciated your prompt response. Stay safe
This does work. Practice!
I wanted a dot but didn't want to mess up my G19X Upper.
So I bought the Dagger $179 FDE Complete SW4 GatorMouth Cut, RMR Milled, 4.5" threaded barrel, suppressor sights, etc. Upper for my G19X frame & love it!
I also waited & bought the "HE" or "Elite" 407c x2 2moa green dot which comes w/ a 10y warranty compared to the 3yr "HS" or "Standard" vers. of Holosun Dots.
Found mine on Optics Planet Black Friday & Coupon Code for $200 shipped!
It was almost dead on at 25y comes with battery installed..
I also installed a O.W. Precision TAC Trigger, Trigger Spring Kit, 15lb Recoil Spring, 3lb Black Yikes connector, Polished everything & she's a sweat 2.7lb consistent shooter, no issues.
I wouldn't trade it for a Staccato! That's how well she runs. Fits tight with zero play between the upper & frame also. Now I have 2 Uppers for my G19X. Stock iron sights & a Dot Upper. Cheapest way to go if you have a Glock & want an Optic. Just buy the Dagger Upper for cheap & slap whatever dot you want, just make sure you buy your correct milled pattern. Mine fits snug & perfectly!
Got my first dot about a week ago. I opted for a new slide rather than getting my current one milled.
Since I do have a completely separate slide for it I can get things of dry fire practice in at night while still carrying during the day
That’s one way to do it. 🙏
Great informational video with on explaining and teaching the basic fundamentals of shooting with a red dot. This makes a lot of sense. The issue I was having when I got my first red dot was I was trying to focus on the front sight not realizing that you should not not be focusing on the target with the red dot.
I have always had a natural tendency to focus on the target so making my transition to dot much easier than some. I also co witness my dot to the front sight, couldn't have explained it as well as Jason did here but it works for me.
That is true ppl are transitioning to red dot. I don’t like red dots much maybe because I’ve never tried it. I feel like if I drink coffee and shoot with a red dot I’m going to be all over the place lol. I like the good ole sights if you got decent sites than your good. I might transition to red dots eventually. Thank you for the content you give us. Very informative and I love your calm approach.

Thx you for this… it makes more sense to lower dot.. to acquire it faster. In a defensive situation .. you’re not shooting a target 25 yards out

Great video! Recently mounted a red dot on my pistol. This information will be put to use. Thank you
I have heard from a range of assorted operators, military and law enforcement, that during a close range gunfight with a pistol you do not aim at all, I have no idea if this is true? It's instinctive shooting because you do not have time to aim.
*Does the job*
Good work here
Solid info great delivery. Subbed!!
Mr. Pike you make it look way to easy banging steel.
It is. You just have to go slow and build the fundamentals.
@ 10:27 DAMNNN great video bro !!!!
This content is excellent!
Awesome video. I shoot red dot and very accurate. I would like to see long range with precision rife setting it up and what's best range to zero
Thank you, sir.
Great video.
I have a problem for you. And my answer is “do what is comfortable and effective for me” former 0311 USMC.. very comfortable and familiar with weapons. But I am right handed dominant, left eye dominant, shoot everything right handed. Shoot my Carbine with my right eye, but… when it comes to my handgun and optic, it is more comfortable to use my left eye. Should I keep that practice or change to my right eye, because how I’ve shot everything else in my career.
I have a 3MOA Vortex Venom on two of my Springfield XD's. My biggest problem is to be able to draw and turn the damn thing on to engage the target. It doesn't turn on automatically.
Turn it down fairly low but visible. It can stay on between 150-30,000 hours is what it states. If that’s the case as well, use your irons at first end if you get the chance, which you won’t, activate the light later. 🙏
Red don
Jason when I use the 5 or 10 yard distance, what am I trying to achieve? Should I be attempting to adjust my red dot above the iron site at that distance. shoot and then make adjustments? I am wondering how do I avoid raise and tip at 25 of more yards. Also your point about target acquisition and shooting accuracy was great..
Put the red dot on the area you want to shoot and it should hit at the distance you zero and in reason within 25 yards at others distances.
Watch the entire Red Dot series.
I had to get my mind around being target focused and Iv’e only been shooting for 4 months.
Thank you
Good video 👍🏻
Prayers 💫🙏🏻💫
What about using a bore sight laser to zero before going to range to get a final zero?
You could. Definitely an option.
You have mentioned that you co-witness with your dot. I can't see any advantage to that. If your using your front sight post with the dot, then why not just use irons? I'm sure this is a lack of understanding on my part, but was just curious.
The only issue I've seen with co-witnesses the red-dot and front sight(on rifle) is my poorly trained (misunderstanding soldiers) who get told that THEN keep putting the red dot ON TOP of the front sight, after being told NOT to.
Trying to get through to some of them so they understand.....can be painful.
Yes that is a video in its own for sure. Even then as you said understanding it is still complicated for many.

Use the sight
Only
To quickly acquire the dot
Then
Just trust the dot
The dot does not have to be centered on the screen, or the sights.
@@amsb4dafunk558 if that's a reply to my comment, you don't understand the issue I was raising.
I've been involved in classes that had students say they had learned from "Special" unit operators (claimed to be retired Navy Seals) to shoot without front sights on their handguns. And, they showed up to the range with their front sight removed also. Can you shed any light on this?
I’m 56 years old and I’ve been shooting since I can remember. I shot mostly rifles and shotguns until I was a young adult and then I started shooting handguns. I bought my first pistol green dot sight late last year and I’ve shot it a few times. I have my dot setup as co-witness but my eyes automatically pickup the front sight and I get a little distracted trying to find the dot. Any suggestions or do I just need more just practice?
Just spend more time behind the glass focusing on the target. It took me 2-3 weeks and 600 rounds before I adjusted properly.
Mr Pike, the number one savage out there. Here's an honest question and I really would like some good advice on this that's not part of the "trends" should I have my slide cut for an optic or just switch the rear sight for an adapter plate, and what are the pros and cons of each, what are your thoughts!!! Help us Obi Wan
I’d get it cut personally to streamline and improve the bore/sight height. However either way works. I run both.

Thanks brother. You answered most all my questions in a single video! Cheers!
Just one question, what type of (taller) iron sights would you recommend with a Glock 19X w/Leopold Delta Point red dot?
A quarter size grouping at 25 yards....... looks like I need to keep practicing. I should be ready by the time I am 80.😆
You can do it!
Thanks Jason. Does your recommendation to use compressor irons apply to ALL handguns using a RD as suggested? For instance, I recently purchased a Sig P365 xmacro comp that came with high end irons and a good cutout for a RD. I placed a HS 407k (made for compacts, smaller optical design) that has a cutout for the rear iron and reasonably co-witnesses my stock irons. Consider that the barrel is only 3.1" and I carry this handgun as my primary CCW (self defense - not meant for long distance handgun shooting although it's pretty darn accurate for a compact!) My concern is that a compressor front sight on a compact handgun with a smaller optical would take up TOO much of the optical field, thus defeating the purpose of the RD...Thoughts?
Not in all. As you stated, it can become a blinder on some guns/optics. Usually on those smaller CCW we run Shield optics. They have a built in rear sight on the optic that goes with the stock front sight. That seems to be the best option.
Unless you are going to run suppressed, just stick to standard height or unless the optic requires it which typically is needed on full size guns.
I do not like this red dot thing lol just trying install my first one on cz p-10m. It’s weird hunting for dot . I’ll be sticking to my ghost ring sights until I can zero the dot and get 100s rounds down range
It takes time to get use to for sure. 🙏
I zero my red dots at 10 -15 yards. If you can shoot a group at 25 yards that will give you any information as to what adjustments you need to make , you are an expert anyway. Dont even use your sights , lol
I have a question? I thought with a red dot that the dot could be anywhere in the glass view and as long as its on the target you will hit?
It’s called Parallax. Out to 25 yards yes. Beyond that it demolishes.
Feel like an idiot for asking this, but given your experience, I’m curious. I’ve got an astigmatism and the dot in my Holosun isn’t perfect. Given that, would you still recommend utilizing a red/green dot? Seems to me that even with the issue, focusing on the target would be faster with practice. Thoughts?
I’m sure you’ve looked into this but glasses or surgery for the astigmatism.
However, the dot not being perfect will not have any bearing on your ability to hit the target. Center it and squeeze.
I would say try green if your eyes strain easy which is a result of astigmatism. 🙏
@@frogmantactical Thank you.
So to co-witness the red dot at say 20 yards you would adjust the red dot down to the front sight ?
Do you know of any good classes in Washington state by chance? I've been shooting guns for 25 years but I'd like to learn to shoot a lot better from a good trainer.
I notice you are not wearing gloves to shoot. Are a glove shooter normally?
Are there any gloves you would recommend for shooting.?
I like Oakley shooting gloves personally. Tight and thin.
@frogmantactical thanks. Kicking around the idea of gloves. Still working it out in my head....
Hi 🙋🏻♂️ what sights are those ??
👋 Sorry I don’t recall. TFO I believe.
Question: If I zero at 10 yards, when shooting at 25 yards without compensating (same POA) how high or low is my POI going to be? Thanks
Less than 3”. Watch the Red Dot series. I’ve done several videos on this topic. 🙏
What's up Jason. Who did the fluted barrel, slide cuts and gold coating for you?
Pratorian Firearms out of Florida.
@@frogmantactical Thanks Boss!
You should NOT slave your red dot to your front iron sight. They are 2 independent sighting systems and what he's not taking into consideration is the various heights of suppressor sights. This would then have a great impact on where the round will impact at various distances. All of the top red dot instructors will tell you to not slave your red dot to your irons.
It doesn’t because your NPoA is with aligned sights. The fact people put on a class to teach red dots shows how silly people are. Y’all will listen to anything people say without proving their theories for yourself. 🙏
By that theory, you should slave your LVPO to the front post on your rifle then, right? I've tested many handguns with different mounting plates and different height front sights and it does impact where the round goes, especially at distance.

Can’t help but wonder how anyone survived the Wild West. I’m sure it had nothing to do with muscle memory.
It had everything to do with shooting each other in the back of the head. History shows that there were only a few paced shoot outs. The rest were point blank shots.
Found this perfect timing. I can't find my fucking dot.

If you are not going to train with a red dot, then don’t get one. If you do train with it, you can find significant advantages. Red dots allow you to shoot more accurately while focusing on the target, not on your front sight.
I am a lefty Okay so I appreciate your videos from a leftist point of view Okay. Since the red dot only assists you to more quickly acquire the target Okay and does not help your accuracy Okay then I don't need one yet Okay. I need to acquire the fundamentals first Okay.

With all due respect, that is not Natural Point of Aim. You are describing sight alignment.
Wrong buddy. 🙏
@@frogmantactical I’m not wrong. NPA has absolutely nothing to so with shooting a pistol offhand. NPA is building a rifle position so your rifle naturally points the rifle at a target using bone structure with no muscle input. Impossible to even talk about NPA with a pistol offhand because it is impossible to index a pistol with no muscle input. Not a SEAL but I’m a High Power shooter and I’m very familiar with NPA.
