I'm a long-suffering fan of the game - I can confirm that the "time warp malfunction" parts are scripted. From what I remember, the actual video repeats like that on the laserdisc (no special machine trickery). I can only guess they were going for a button-mashing type mechanic in the game. It's fun hearing all the segments in Japanese! Here's hoping more Japanese LD games are uncovered - hey, I can dream!

I think the 'malfunctions' are an intentional difficulty spike. Given that the original Dragon's Lair had random, tighter timings used to try to consume credits, this feels like the same thing.
The home versions don't include it, admittedly, but the programming of those has always lacked content.

Makes sense. It may be that I didn't see it as much when testing the English version, since I configured the English version to back off a bit difficulty-wise when I was recording it, whereas the JP version here was running on DIP defaults.

It also makes sense that I'd start hitting those moments somewhat early, since my muscle memory is still there from early last year when I was wiring up the English version.

@@mogemulationIs this a ROM swap as well as the disc then? With a very pedantic ear on this, there's an overrun on the scene ends by a few seconds I think (the death music can be heard at the ends of scenes), but that could just be Pioneer player mode, as I've never seen one in the wild that wasn't hooked up to the Sony player.

I hope there will be an option for deinterlacing, once all critical bugs are fixed. It would make the whole thing look nicer on non-CRTs.

Are there Japanese ROMS or can you select Japanese text from an option on the board?

We have 2 different ROM sets for Time Traveler itself already in MAME, with the English version of Time Traveler hooked up to one of the two.
It looks like my note about the second set using different frame numbering may be slightly wrong, or I haven't yet found where the JP version differs from EN, because pointing the 2nd ROMset at the English version of the disc still seems to play fine.
With the versioning of the ROMs being an unknown, but with us now having two LDFs (one single-disc from an English Time Traveler disc, one a two-disc stack from a Japanese Time Traveler disc), for now I have the English CHD hooked up to the same set as before (timetrv), and the Japanese CHD hooked up to the alternate set (timetrv2).

なに? After playing the game on the US/english DVD for so long this threw me off haha...
If you've never seen that version, there was hidden behind the scenes footage on it, I believe someone uploaded it here.
Still seems unreal remembering seeing people put money in this machine to buy cubes, you def knew who was the rich kid at the arcade...
