That’s one laserdisc game working. Hopefully this leads to other laserdisc games working, like Galaxian 3. That one is especially important in my opinion because it has no public cabinets working in the world anymore. in any case good work on getting one more game working.
Awesome work! We've RE'd a couple of versions of Readysoft's DOS engines for ScummVM - Brain Dead 13, Space Ace, and Dragon's Lair 1+2. Some of them use a custom video format, much simpler than decoding a laserdisc, of course :) I suck at quick-time events too, luckily the games include a cheats file containing all the needed moves so we can test them without playing them manually.
Glad to see these classic games still being worked on. I always had a fascination with the Laserdisc-based games, even if most were quite hard to play. lol
Omg ,what a new year gift, this is definitely big,we do have laserdisc games that work in MAME,but this is a big one,I was just talking bout Dragons Lair yesterday and emulation with it,I really do wanna see it in the next update of MAME. By the way, the CHD can't be 440GB,just kidding 😅
Can't wait for the day where Mame DL is playable, and works better than Daphne. Daphne was as close as we could get.. Is mame even more accurate somehow? I do love the scoreboard off to the side for on 16x9 monitors.. I assume we will be able to disable that anc go classic 4:3 with no score overlay?
That works OK the video is recorded with a videocamera, but Dragon's Lair was actually a 24 FPS film converted to 30 FPS NTSC video using the 3:2 pull down method. Line-doubling (aka BOB) de-interlacing is preferred because you no longer end up with frames that are blended for 2 different film source frames.
@@jonah1976 I mean yeah you can do that but it halves the resolution effectively. The best deinterlacers use use motion adaptive deinterlacing, but again that probably doesn't work so well with cartoon content. They are very complicated algorithms though. In some cases with mpeg video it's possible to inverse telecine the video, ie convert it back to 24fps. In those cases the pull down happens with just some flags in the stream rather than hard coding. But I guess that doesn't apply to laser disc, being an analog format :)
Thanks for all your hard work with MAME LD games. I finally had a chance to try DL in the latest MAME, but for an unknown reason there is no sound in the attract mode. What may be the problem?
Honest question here... Why bother with deinterlacing? The original Dragon's Lair was interlaced, just like some other games that are emulatrd by MAME, such as Popeye. If MAME's mission is to accurately document antiquated electronic machines and computers, it seems reasonable to not worry about deinterlacing. If deinterlacing is desired as an OPTIONAL feature, can MAME's existing deinterlacing code be reused? Popeye already has a MAME feature to apply optional deiterlacing.
Not only is the laserdisc interlaced but its source material was 24 FPS film converted to 30 FPS NTSC video using 3:2 pull down. Interlaced video or 3:2 pull down on a progressive display just doesn't look right. So in fact not de-interlacing the video is actually not accurate on every progressive display we use today. And Popeye's de-interlacing method won't work, again because of 3:2 pull down.
@@stefanoarosio836 I'm happy about it, but more than 1 year ago I don't remember who worked in mame said that we would never have it in mame as long as digital leysure held the rights

Thanks for the continued hard work. Being a mamedev can be a thankless task, but it IS appreciated!

that one is hard to impossible depending on what version of it your talking about
M.A.C.H. 3 has been working for quite some time. Since 2013 is the timestamp on the CHD file is to be trusted.
@@jonah1976Wrong game.

Hello. Do you know if this is working in Mame now?
What version of mame is this for?? Thank you
More progress, more update! Thanks for sharing, it's always nice knowing you are working on new stuff.
Happy new year!
Nice, Thank you for the update!
Deinterlacing is likely needed on all laserdisc games; Time Traveller shows interlacing too.

Good Job! 👍🏻
Hope there will be a video about it like with Polygonet

Any nearer to completion? Or is there a downloadable version ?
Cheers
How do we get this?
I liked that game, but couldn't learn from my mistakes.
You can just blend the two fields together. It's a little ugly but is generally the most simple and reliable way of deinterlacing.

Question..what is needed to play dragons lair in mame?
Is the setup for dragons lair different than for other roms?
I believe it's a chd file
You should just need the CHD, same as any other CHD-requiring game.

Could you tell me please where can i get it?
Check your "DIP Switch" settings. Turn off "Sound Every 8 Attracts."
how big was the resulting combined raw file?
I think it's 30 GB, which is compressed down to 11.4 for the CHD.

but the chd file of this game is so huge
Ovviamente è una cosa privata visto che dragon's lair non potrà mai vedere luce sul mame per i diritti che ne detiene la digital leisure
Every game Is copyrighted. For this reason roms and laser disc scan aren't part of mame. So, dragons lair will be soon in mame
