If you are having trouble hearing the talking, please try this link here that has better mixing. vimeo.com/744369736/18d0b3b8bc
Sorry for the audio mixing here, I was not on my normal set up and the music is a bit loud in spots. The video sound will be easier to hear on some audio devices than it will on others.

This extra time thing was so well described and represented by Sean Penn's character in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" that actually went further and choosed not to be distracted by the camera but to stay in the moment... One of my favorite movie scenes!

I love this damn channel. It’s a damn shame there’s less than 100k subs. This channel needs 10x that.
My biggest mistake was listening to other peoples opinion on gear without context of what I wanted to shoot. Ever since I bought lenses that don’t make sense such as a 14mm 1.8 GM I’ve been so much happier. It’s giving me the field of view I want (it’s amazing at Astro as well) and I can just walk around with it looking for foregrounds to distort.
I haven’t touched my 24-70 in the time I’ve had it and I may sell it for a 100-400.
I just never find myself in the 24-70 range. It’s always felt boring where as there’s something special about the extreme ends of the focal lengths.

I travel a fair bit with my family overseas and we shall be in Iceland in the winter holidays so hopefully I can take your excellent tips and maybe bag at least one good photo that will remind us of a amazing country.
Also in the Easter week of 2023 my wife and I will be in San Francisco for a day and also Yosemite for a day or two! Looking forward to that experience for sure. I live in the middle of England and our coastline can be a bit bland but with your perspective of photography taken on board I may just may it look a little bit better!!

I agree a 100% with managing time at a location and reaching earlier as I gives me so much time to find interesting subjects along the coastline and come away with unique compositions that I didn't know existed. I would like to know your experiences on visiting a same location multiple times(over 10). There is a location nearby that is my go to spot for my last minute good weather shoot moments. Somehow I always find something different across the seasons.

Magnificent video and photography as always Michael! Yes I agree that getting to a scene and rushing things is never good for ones' creativity, or even properly setting up your camera! I lost count how many times I got to a scene late, and forgot to even put my settings in order, let alone a decent comp! Each time I got to a place early, had the time to scout it, and then to play with different comps and techniques, I came away with a shot I could be happy with! BTW, I see you have a VERO account but it's been idle since 2018, you need to get back in there! It's kicking off like crazy now, and I'm sure the community there would LOVE to see you get back to posting! Cheers

Photography is a great way to de-stress, but you need as you talk about in the video, take the extra time and absorb nature and the environment, otherwise its risk also the photography get stressful, in the hunt of epic pictures.

    Dear Michael,
Another fantastic, beautiful, relaxing and informative video! 👏👏👏
I would like to check on how you merged the pano shot of the sea stacks at sunset. You mention 4 vertical shots. I’ve tried to do this but failed, due to not being able to blend/merge the moving water/waves. I’m assuming that you first stitch the pano, then perform some additional blending of the water? Any tips/workflow outline would be really helpful. Thanks! 🙏

I also remind myself that the reason I do photography is because it’s fun. So relax and enjoy. If I miss some shots that’s okay. They’ll be always in my precious memory 😊
I think I took that seashore picture at roughly the same spot that you did. It’s was 2002 and it was my first time at Point Reyes. After watching this, you made me want to go sometime this Fall.

Another great video Michael, and yes I have learnt that if you rush your photos you can come away disappointed, although sometimes you can be lucky ! So I have become much more purposeful in my compositions. I don't understand how you can stitch a pano with moving waves, even if done manually the photos would need to be taken a very quick time frame wouldn't they ? Can you outline how you do this please ?

I really liked the long exposure shots best and I think the waves in the sunset photos might have looked cool in a long exposure too. It may not be my biggest mistake, but I think a big mistake I make is taking shots of a wide scene and not trying hard enough to find some small detail to zoom in on. I like that you seem to always seem to find something interesting to zoom in on, even in a pano.

  • @ddki9094
    @ddki9094 Рік тому

I made so many mistakes when I first started but since I'm an purely an amateur, not someone who has sacrificed a lot of time and treasure to this artform, I answer this question maybe a little differently than a pro photographer would. Looking back, I can say that for me the one thing that ruined so many of my photos was my lack of understanding of photography and also not knowing my camera. All I wanted to do was show up and take photos of pretty places but I had no idea what I was doing. I assure you I'm still making mistakes and still learning from those mistakes but I have so much fun just going out and photographing whatever I feel like so whenever I get the chance to visit an epic location I will be more equipped to handle more situations.
