Watching your videos is like a meditation for me. Magically beautiful shots, calm voice, storytelling - for a moment I just forgot that I'm in a crowded city. Thank you for this feeling!
This extra time thing was so well described and represented by Sean Penn's character in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" that actually went further and choosed not to be distracted by the camera but to stay in the moment... One of my favorite movie scenes!
Lovely pace and sense of authenticity on this one. Captures exactly what I love about landscape photography, the arriving early, taking your time, soaking it in. Wise advise, nicely reflected in the content.
New to landscape photography so love your tips. Booked 3 days in December at Point Reyes so I have time to explore the area and shoot leisurely. Also saves the scary trip of coming across Mt. Tam in the dark.
I love this damn channel. It’s a damn shame there’s less than 100k subs. This channel needs 10x that. My biggest mistake was listening to other peoples opinion on gear without context of what I wanted to shoot. Ever since I bought lenses that don’t make sense such as a 14mm 1.8 GM I’ve been so much happier. It’s giving me the field of view I want (it’s amazing at Astro as well) and I can just walk around with it looking for foregrounds to distort. I haven’t touched my 24-70 in the time I’ve had it and I may sell it for a 100-400. I just never find myself in the 24-70 range. It’s always felt boring where as there’s something special about the extreme ends of the focal lengths.
Excellent production. Your videos are among the most professional in content, narration and sound. Thanks for that. As for the surf pictures, I went crazy over the long exposures, especially the abstracts where some water appeared as thin sheets of ice. Very inspiring, Sir.
Ahhhhh! The textures on that 15 second exposure are spectacular!! I love how much variety there is when you combine different exposures with the continuous movement of the ocean.😌
Beautiful shots! Timely video for me. I feel like I've been in a rut lately and I think you just explained why. I haven't made the time to go sit, been rushing around without a thought about what I want to do. Thanks.
Hey Michael, I find your videos both educational and calming. You clearly portray a deep love of photography and capture the essence of the great outdoors that sometimes we all overlook. I travel a fair bit with my family overseas and we shall be in Iceland in the winter holidays so hopefully I can take your excellent tips and maybe bag at least one good photo that will remind us of a amazing country. Also in the Easter week of 2023 my wife and I will be in San Francisco for a day and also Yosemite for a day or two! Looking forward to that experience for sure. I live in the middle of England and our coastline can be a bit bland but with your perspective of photography taken on board I may just may it look a little bit better!! Thank you. Kev in The U.K! ❤
We had a California trip booked in 2020 and had to cancel due to the pandemic. Point Reyes is on the schedule and hopefully we may get there next year. Your photography and videos are an inspiration and I can only aspire to capture some California images inspired by your book. Thanks
Such beautiful images! Very inspiring and even emotional. Showing how you capture the beauty in the world. I envy the locations you are able to explore.
So appreciative of your videos. Love seeing the process you go through to find, explore, & experiment with your images. Plus showing the stuff that didn't work like you thought and why you don't think it works. As another comment said, very meditative, but informative & good learning experience for all the viewers. Thank you.
Great video and good advice. I think many people have difficulties to take the extra time. So much stress in todays world. Photography is a great way to de-stress, but you need as you talk about in the video, take the extra time and absorb nature and the environment, otherwise its risk also the photography get stressful, in the hunt of epic pictures.
As others have commented, rushed photography will almost always lead to disappointment. Arriving early is sometimes difficult but it's worth the effort. I liked the detail images around the 8:00 mark the best. Side note: you could run an ASMR channel with that voice. You're like the Bob Ross of UA-cam landscape shooters.
Thanks so much John, I really appreciate all your comments and support. Maybe I will think of a way to incorporate more ASMR elements into the videos. Like close up wound effects and things. that seems to be the popular thing right now! Glad you enjoyed that image as well!
Outstanding as usual. I liked the music and the sound effects used in the videos . I totally agree with you that taking more time to know your location better will definitely help to take beautiful photos at the end.
Some amazing photos, been to this location a couple times when I used to live in SoCal but never had a chance to plan a shoot there, I would love to the next time I am in the bay area.
There was a time when I was photographing without awareness, then I realized that I was very, very behind and everything was wrong. To be honest, you helped me a lot, you changed my view of nature photography. I want to understand and communicate. Thank you, Michael. I hope to see you one day
Stunning photos as always, your videos help me in my depression, i'm in a rut and about to move to a new city away from everyone for a new life, and i really want to get back into photos..
Are you planning to be in the Dolomites in mid-October? I just came back from those locations - Ortisei, Alpe di Siusi, Odles, … - and I guess in autumn those places might look amazing. Stefano
Excellent video and simply beautiful photographs! I have been to that very spot you were, and it just takes your breath away! Love your little story about shooting to quickly, very good advice for any photographer, I've fallen into that very trap, very much appreciate you providing these words of wisdom, it helps all of us. Your video makes me want to head out there again...Again, thank you doing such a beautiful job on this video!
Love this video! Also, have you photographed up at Salt Point? If not I would HIGHLY recommend it. Some of the most surreal and beautiful landscapes I have ever seen.
I made so many mistakes when I first started but since I'm an purely an amateur, not someone who has sacrificed a lot of time and treasure to this artform, I answer this question maybe a little differently than a pro photographer would. Looking back, I can say that for me the one thing that ruined so many of my photos was my lack of understanding of photography and also not knowing my camera. All I wanted to do was show up and take photos of pretty places but I had no idea what I was doing. I assure you I'm still making mistakes and still learning from those mistakes but I have so much fun just going out and photographing whatever I feel like so whenever I get the chance to visit an epic location I will be more equipped to handle more situations.
I agree a 100% with managing time at a location and reaching earlier as I gives me so much time to find interesting subjects along the coastline and come away with unique compositions that I didn't know existed. I would like to know your experiences on visiting a same location multiple times(over 10). There is a location nearby that is my go to spot for my last minute good weather shoot moments. Somehow I always find something different across the seasons.
Dear Michael, Another fantastic, beautiful, relaxing and informative video! 👏👏👏 I would like to check on how you merged the pano shot of the sea stacks at sunset. You mention 4 vertical shots. I’ve tried to do this but failed, due to not being able to blend/merge the moving water/waves. I’m assuming that you first stitch the pano, then perform some additional blending of the water? Any tips/workflow outline would be really helpful. Thanks! 🙏
Beautiful place and nice captures. You just needed a person walking on the beach with a red jacket or in the foreground to give it scale and human interest. Even some birds in the sky would add some sort of life as well, but again nice job capturing these gorgeous locations especially using long exposures to change the mood. Thanks for sharing Regards Gerry
Really been digging your videos and photography. Regarding the the 3 side by side ocean pano, how difficult was it to blend the to images overlapping in the water? I feel like this could get difficult when get different patterns emerge during a long exposure.
Magnificent video and photography as always Michael! Yes I agree that getting to a scene and rushing things is never good for ones' creativity, or even properly setting up your camera! I lost count how many times I got to a scene late, and forgot to even put my settings in order, let alone a decent comp! Each time I got to a place early, had the time to scout it, and then to play with different comps and techniques, I came away with a shot I could be happy with! BTW, I see you have a VERO account but it's been idle since 2018, you need to get back in there! It's kicking off like crazy now, and I'm sure the community there would LOVE to see you get back to posting! Cheers
Another great video Michael, and yes I have learnt that if you rush your photos you can come away disappointed, although sometimes you can be lucky ! So I have become much more purposeful in my compositions. I don't understand how you can stitch a pano with moving waves, even if done manually the photos would need to be taken a very quick time frame wouldn't they ? Can you outline how you do this please ?
Michael, stunning photos again. And thanks for your advice. I also rush and too often and get myself frustrated during the process. I also remind myself that the reason I do photography is because it’s fun. So relax and enjoy. If I miss some shots that’s okay. They’ll be always in my precious memory 😊 I think I took that seashore picture at roughly the same spot that you did. It’s was 2002 and it was my first time at Point Reyes. After watching this, you made me want to go sometime this Fall. By the way, do you Marty Knapp? He’s a Point Reyes local and owns a gallery in the area. He has been photographing Point Reyes throughout his life in black and white. If you got a chance, visit his gallery next time you go there.
I really liked the long exposure shots best and I think the waves in the sunset photos might have looked cool in a long exposure too. It may not be my biggest mistake, but I think a big mistake I make is taking shots of a wide scene and not trying hard enough to find some small detail to zoom in on. I like that you seem to always seem to find something interesting to zoom in on, even in a pano.
Great shots Michael. Videos are good too, however it was hard to hear your voice over the background music. I tend to turn it down a touch, so its more in the background. Great choice in music too BTW.
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing, always looking forward to these! How do you stitch together panoramas with things moving in the scene (waves) and keep it looking so nice, especially if using a longer exposure?
You want us to name just 1?! Haha, in the past it used to be not scouting out locations beforehand (especially if it was places I’d never been to before) so then I’d be frantically running around trying to get unique shots. Last few trips it’s been quickly clicking away along a hike, only to realize that a cool image I’d love to use is slightly blurry because I didn’t take the time to check if the shot was good 🙄 . Biggest mistake though? Not taking the time to sit down and soak in the moments, sans camera. Started adjusting the latter, and now the images have a whole different meaning when looking through them again :) P.S. love love love your work!
Not knowing how to use the camera. The camera is the tool and not knowing how to use that tool makes collecting the image more challenging. You can have fantastic light, an awesome composition but if you mess up with settings and don't get a good image; all for not!
Exactly as you say Michael, not giving yourself enough time at a location and slowing yourself down. If I could do that I’m sure I would improve and get better images, roll on retirement 😂😉
Thanks for this good lesson, Michael. I agree, no matter what kind of gear you have, or how good you are at Photoshop, if you don't take the time to soak yourself in the spirit of a place your work will be uninspired. Took me years to learn this fact.
Very inspiring. Love the abstract nature of your photos. Dumb question: when you do a pano of the waves, when you stitch the photos together, how do you get the waves to line up?
Thanks! Since the motion was quite simple and smooth it was kinda just an automatic blend, with no work required. But if there were any issues I would have just done some cloning in Photoshop.

Wow, thank you so much for that! I really appreciate the kind words and support!
You are so right! :) Greetings from Germany
I agree.
That's because of the great soundtrack too!))
It's just like watching Bob Ross
You’re videos are fantastic. My daughter and I went there probably 20 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday.
Yes, rushing rarely works. Good reminder! Those were gorgeous and well-timed.
WOW!!!!!! I absolutely love the 15 sec exposure shot of the waves and shore. Michael absolutely incredible work man!
thanks so much! :)
That sunset!!!!!! I got major feels on that one. Love your stuff Michael!
I definitely struggle with rushing and not slowing down enough. Great advice and images. Video was so soothing to watch with the background music too!
Great advice. When you were shooting the beach, right up the hill behind you is a big cypress that makes a terrific foreground for the beach shot.
Shooting into the sun with those cliffs was amazing Michael, loved that image at 11.10 great image’s, thanks for sharing
Pt. Reyes is my favorite place in Northern California. I took those very same pictures but with out the same skill early in my photography.
This extra time thing was so well described and represented by Sean Penn's character in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" that actually went further and choosed not to be distracted by the camera but to stay in the moment... One of my favorite movie scenes!
Great Scene, and great movie. And amazing soundtrack from fellow Swede Jose Gonzales
Love the story & the whole video. Thanks for sharing! ❤️ Landscape photographers are my people. Love that feeling of being in nature & creating. ❤️
Nice work as always. The longer exposures really worked on those waves. The photos come out looking almost like watercolor paintings.
Very nice indeed. I was really taken with the way the waves overlap each other. They were reminscent to me of layered white lace.
Your compositions are amazing. So calming and relaxing to watch and study your photography/videography process.
Lovely pace and sense of authenticity on this one. Captures exactly what I love about landscape photography, the arriving early, taking your time, soaking it in. Wise advise, nicely reflected in the content.
Point Reyes was the first place I ever did landscape photography. Brings back memories
New to landscape photography so love your tips. Booked 3 days in December at Point Reyes so I have time to explore the area and shoot leisurely. Also saves the scary trip of coming across Mt. Tam in the dark.
Excellent advice on taking time to explore without rushing. I will try that on my trip to New Zealand!

Always great visuals from you. Like the music too!
And better than your business partner showing how he converts a church into firewood.
Thanks.
so much fun watching your spectacular work Michael!

thanks for always pushing for the creative composition in those classic spots. You are a legend, Michael!
I really appreciate that! Thank you so much!
An important message we often forget. loved the images, thank you for sharing your knowledge. 🤘
Exquisite vlog and images. The long exposure of the waves was sublime
Thank you Leo, really glad you like them!
Michael, as always great video. Your videos are very relaxing and inspirational. Keep them coming man!
Thanks so much Eugene!
Thank you for sharing amazing video no boring to watching

Amazing video Michael!!!!
thank you :)
Beautiful setting and video. Taking time always seems to be the key in life, as well as photography.
Really enjoyed this video - very many thanks - great insight and advice !!
Wonderfully said. It's easy to just go go go with digital nowadays. Thanks for all you've helped me and others with!
Stunning photos as always, your videos help me in my depression, i'm in a rut and about to move to a new city away from everyone for a new life, and i really want to get back into photos..
That's beautiful great job👌
thx Michael, its beautiful
I would like to try it
really thank you
Top tip! I've been really struggling lately. And not enjoying photography like I used to. I need to arrive earlier and work more slowly :)

thanks so much
The 15 sec exposure looks like a painting!
Such a beautiful, well made video!
I really enjoyed this (and subscribed to all)
amazing spot and amazing photos!
Very nice explanation with discussion
Glad you liked it, thanks!

Great video. What was the program you were using to check the sunset location? Thanks.
This was really great, thank you
thank you :)

@@MichaelShainblum you're welcome, come to my country Indonesia here something is different
Great shots Michael. Videos are good too, however it was hard to hear your voice over the background music. I tend to turn it down a touch, so its more in the background. Great choice in music too BTW.
yeah had some mixing issues with this one, I have it reuploaded here with lower volume. vimeo.com/744369736/18d0b3b8bc
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing, always looking forward to these! How do you stitch together panoramas with things moving in the scene (waves) and keep it looking so nice, especially if using a longer exposure?
Always enjoy your videos and images! Would enjoy the opportunity to shoot with you someday, if the opportunity ever presents itself.
What's the biggest mistake you have made with your own photography? I would love to know! ✍👇
Missing focus and not realizing, maybe over editing in some instances, over exposing night photos
Started adjusting the latter, and now the images have a whole different meaning when looking through them again :)
P.S. love love love your work!
Thanks!
beautiful!
thanks so much Alain!
Thankyou
What is the tripod model you use? Thanks Michael!
I use the colorado tripod company one, it works great!
It would be great if you could include images before and after post-processing in your videos.
Mike, who do you send your film to for processing?
I have been using Legacy Photo Lab and also a local shop in SF called Photoworks.
the track @7:17 hits differently, any help with it.
got it ua-cam.com/video/scJgbM9PDmE/v-deo.html&ab_channel=JudahEarl
A snapshot, yeah i hate when i do that too. My problem i think is I can’t show my thought process in the photo.
