    As one of your older subscribers I fell into the buy the makeup game later in life, beauty subscriptions had to be cancelled and I have been on a sort of no buy the last 2 years, I do believe my makeup will out live me, holiday season is hard but I’ve been good so far…. Only buying replacements and for every 5 I take out of my collection I allow myself to buy 1. I keep a rolling project pan and my 2 days off work is a makeup free for all, creative days! Love your channel….

      Wow!!! I do the rule “2 out, 1 in” for makeup and it’s already a challenge, so congrats, Laura! I’m proud of you! I started panning two years ago when I discovered this channel and it has really helped me skip launches and have healthier buying habits! Thank you so much, Sarah 😊

    this video was so fun! thank you so much for collaborating with me 💗 You shared so many great insights and delved a little deeper into the makeup aspects of things like creativity and finding new combos. I definitely agree with you on the backups and the makeup guilt. Of course, as you mentioned, not every panner experiences the guilt. I did a mini project pan before I started my channel and went on a no buy to try it out. I had so much guilt over buying stuff and the project pan made it "ok" in my mind to buy more things because it was like SEE I'm using my stuff.

    I don’t pan but I like to keep track of my empties + shop my stash. I know some people like to tally how many times they use a product. I like this approach because it gives me data about my makeup use but I don’t feel the pressure to work on only one product at a time.

    For me the number one advantage of panning is one no one has ever talked about: it inspires me to do my makeup way more often. I used to only do my makeup about once a week and now I do my makeup about 5-6 times a week and the great thing is that way I get more use out of my whole collection, not just my project pan items. 😊

      yes!! when i started my makeup collection i was wearing makeup 365 days a year, so buying 5 new makeup items a month seemed less terrible. then i started wearing it less and i’d do it maybe once every 2 weeks- at that rate i’ll die with every single blush i currently own

    Project panning has definitely made me a more mindful consumer. I’m so glad I started a few years ago. I had bad makeup spending habits where I would buy backups, multiples due to sales, and even if something caught my slightest bit of attention I would purchase. Nowadays, new makeup hardly catches my interest because I could easily find something so similar in my collection. I track what i use up in a year and it is so sad how little I actually use up😂🫣this year I’ve only used up like 15 makeup products which has barely made a dent. I will continue to project pan and cycle through my products so nothing is forgotten😊

    I always love your realistic and thoughtful outlook on things. I like to watch panning videos but it can get frustrating to watch people use really old makeup that looks dried up or isn’t their color just for the sake of finishing them. Sort of defeats the purpose of makeup enhancing your beauty. And I watch a couple planners who allow sort of a one in one out, but they are empty products at an unbelievable rate, which doesn’t even possible. I’ve landed somewhere middle of the road where right now I’m just focusing on a concealer, mascara, loose powder and setting spray - the rest is a free for all. I have also noticed I use the same colors in all my eyeshadow palettes, so in 2024 I might challenge myself to use every shade in my palettes at least once!

      I agree, I feel like any person doing panning updates more frequently than every 2 months is just consuming makeup at an unrealistic rate for the sake of having a pan update

    I attempted to begin project panning this year, I don't have a major spending problem, but I could see that I could easily get around to having one if I didn't start doing something about it. I hated panning! I felt like I was just overusing products to try to use them up faster and I was more focused on using as much as possible or using up one single lipstick or blush than on actually putting on makeup that I was happy to wear that day.
    I think the thing that really helped me was to first start using everything that I already owned for a month or two, which helped me figure out what I actually like (colors, formulas, formats/ packaging), and then I was able to put together a list of every category of product that I would want to own (ex. not just lipsticks or lipglosses, but "sheer brown lipstick in a twist up tube", "opaque red lipstick in a twist up tube", "sheer purple lipgloss in a squeeze tube or a wand tube") and then I could see that I had at least one product in each of those categories, and a couple of categories in which I had no products, and I was able to purchase things to *actually* "fill in" my "collection".
    Another thing that actually helped me was to put all of my products in one place. All of my lip and lip/cheek products are in one little rectangular bin (the kind you would put inside of a drawer) standing up on their ends, so I can see everything. Not just the ones I'm using, but the backups too. I can't fit another product in it. Being able to see every single option that I have at once, and knowing that I could not fit a single other product in that bin also prevents me from buying more. When I can see everything at once, I can see that I have every option that I could ever want, nothing is "out of sight, out of mind" and knowing that I wouldn't be able to do that if I bought another product means that I don't even want to. All of my other types of makeup (base, cheeks, eyes, brows), backups included, are in one makeup bag. Again, the consolidation means that nothing is "out of sight, out of mind" and I don't feel like I want more because I'm able to maintain a sense of what I already own and I'm sure that there's nothing that I really want to do that I can't do with something that I already own.
    All of the lessons about how long a product lasts and the fact that they do eventually expire are lessons that I was able to gain from watching the notorious HLP's no-buy year and project panners like you. Those things made me *want to want* to stop purchasing more makeup. However, the thing that actually made me *want to stop* purchasing more makeup was sitting down and figuring out what I actually like to wear and what categories that requires that I personally have (I think I have 17 categories). I always knew that I liked lip products but sitting down and figuring out what specific colors and formulas of products I want allows me to see that I already have at least one product in each category. Now, when I see a product that is "exactly the kind of thing that I like", I can see which category it would fill and I can know for a fact that I already have one or more products in that category. I am no longer compelled by low prices or beautiful packaging or exciting colors because I've a) throughly analyzed what looks I actually like to wear, and what products I need to own in order to be able to wear those looks, and b) managed to store/ organize my makeup in a way that allows me to see and remember everything I own so I'm always aware of how complete my "collection" already is.
    If something does interest me, I just put it on a list and wait. Most of the time, I realize that I don't want it, I wouldn't wear it, it's just really interesting to look at. Sometimes I realize that there's something new I want to try that might warrant the creation of a new category, and I'm able to purchase one product to fill in that category and experiment with the new thing. And sometimes I realize that I'm just interested in something because it seems like a better version of a specific category of product (ex. if I have a clear gloss already, but think I may have a found one that I like even more) and I can make note of it as the product I want to purchase once that category is empty.
    If you made it to the end of this essay, I hope it was interesting/ helpful lol.

    Project panning helps me to get the joy and satisfaction out of makeup items that I was hoping to get when I bought them. Seeing a pan in an eye shadow makes me smile because I know I've spent some nice time with that item. It also brings satisfaction that I originally got from looking for the next thing to buy when I first got into makeup. I usually do usage goals because I am not in a hurry to use things up unless they are getting older, I just want to enjoy my collection. Now I choose carefully because each new thing takes my time away from all the things I already love.

    I’ve started project pan/low buy/makeup inventory.. I had too much makeup for a non-creator!! I feel better now because I realize that I do not use much makeup daily therefore I do not need to have a huge collection.. I’ve also unsubscribed from a lot of UA-cam channel because most of them are only “Haul” and huge collection based and I do not need them. Now I have a huge collection I’m working with and I’ve started watching more channels related to panning world ❤️

    The using more than you might otherwise, yes. I caught myself doing that and thought, I don’t actually want to FINISH this I just want to use it more. I’ve been doing more of a rotation of products and really enjoy that. It gives me insight into what products I just never want to use as well as an understanding of the kinds of brands that bring me joy to use. That’s def helped me with making wiser purchases.

  • @GillenMeg
    @GillenMeg 7 місяців тому +6

    Project panning definitely helped me stop buying so much makeup. Especially backups - I used to buy SO many backups! After a few years of panning, I have learned that I can't force myself to pan something that I don't like. And even if I like a product, sometimes I just don't want to pan it. In some ways, I have hyper-focused on a product too much that I don't use the other products I have in that category, but I don't fault myself too much for that because I usually am enjoying the item I'm panning. Also, not to get too deep here, but I am grateful for having project pan items when I get depressed. During those times, I feel too down to do anything, let alone spend time on my appearance, but I force myself to use my project pan items instead of going bare-faced, and being somewhat put together actually helps me through the day sometimes. I'm sure having a monthly makeup bag/basket would help in this situation, too.

  • @meggleee
    @meggleee 7 місяців тому +8

    Doing monthly makeup drawers has helped me so much to use up products this year! On the side I had a very low stakes rolling project pan with about 8 items. But I swear I finished more items by doing my monthly shop my stash since those were the products I was more interested in using at the time. Plus picking out my new products each month really helped the urge to buy more!

    • @sandramatras8345
      @sandramatras8345 7 місяців тому

      Absolutely! I just threw out a bunch of products I've been keeping for decades and rarely used. I just kept them because when I bought them they were super expensive. I've also pretty much stopped buying high-end mascaras because I get pink eye regularly (2-3 times a year) and I have to replace my mascara every time that happens. As a result, I never really use up a full mascara and so I think the high-end ones are really too expensive. If I want to try a new high-end product, I tend to put it on my Christmas wish list and hope I get it, or I will wait for a sale. I've gotten some really good deals on fragrances and gift boxes in the week after Christmas when everything is marked down.

    i tried project panning with the products i wasn’t routinely reaching for and i hated it. it took away the joy and spontaneity of using makeup and oftentimes, i have no interest in fully emptying or using up a product unless it’s about to expire to the point of becoming unusable. i enjoy watching people’s progress though. it’s cool to see the visible difference in product level and the sense of accomplishment.

    • @losermillie
      @losermillie 6 місяців тому +2

      i think trying to pan products you don’t reach for can make panning seem so difficult, i do it the way i’ve seen a few others do it, kat from beauty news for one, a basic day to day project pan basket of items you enjoy, so i have a middle of the road foundation, a meh powder, a cream blush, a very old bronzer etc. this is my every day makeup that i wear, if i need to put makeup on and not think about it, this is what i reach for. if i want something more fun, or want a different look for whatever reason, i can do that whenever, but i have my first choices front and centre.
      focusing on things you at least decently enjoy using regularly is really important!
      but also panning isn’t for everyone, it depends what it is about makeup that you like and if for you it’s spontaneity, then it would probably be a bit restrictive. for me it’s making myself feel put together, so a basic routine for work is best for me anyway!

    I have so many lipstick glasses and stuff so this year I didn't buy any. I took all my lippies and put them in a big makeup bag and every day I reach into it and grab one and put it on. Once in a while I will grab a specific one but for the most part I just use whatever I grab. One day I grabbed a hot pink that I never wore and it was fun. I gave myself one rule that if it was a really bright color or dark red I could toss it back in but I only did that once the whole year. I'm never going to use any of them up before they go bad but at least I'm wearing them. I was also really surprised that I rarely got the same one twice.

    Thank you so much for touching on the idea that because make up is for women, it could potentially be put down as silly or not valid whereas men’s hobbies in general are widely accepted, even applauded. As someone who is big into traditionally feminine hobbies (baking, knitting, makeup) I receive negativity about my enthusiasm for my hobbies. I’d be interested to hear if anyone has shared this experience.
    I want to clarify I do not think I’m a victim for this, I’m just wondering if men receive criticism as much for their masculine hobbies? There’s a chance people who show open enthusiasm for anything just receive criticism in general for being passionate about something!

    I love project panning, and I think it's super fun, but I definitely set up my projects to be zero pressure, and more just a fun way to cycle through my collection and make sure I'm enjoying all of it, rather than getting stuck in a rut with what I'm using.
    It took me a couple years to figure out what works for me, but I enjoy having more than one project going at once, with different fun themes, and I refresh my projects every month. It just feels like a fun game I play with my makeup all year long! 😄 I also do usage goals, and a lot of months the goal is just to use items one time. Very low pressure, but I feel like a champion when I get like 5 or 6 tallies on there! Haha👌🏻 Another thing I do to keep it fresh and fun is that I cycle in all kinds of products - makeup, body care, skincare, haircare, nail polish, candles, accessories, outfit ideas, makeup techniques, perfume, etc. For example, this December some of my goals are to wear a "bold lip" at least once, use my candy cane body scrub, my favorite winter perfume, and my dark blue nail polish - all things that will feel extra exciting to enjoy during the holiday season. ☃️🎄❄️
    This is just what works for me, but it's definitely helped me enjoy my collection more, and cut down on my beauty spending. Plus, participating in different themed projects along with some of my favorite UA-camrs adds a community aspect that is so wonderful. 💜🥰

  • @ForeordainedEchoes
    @ForeordainedEchoes 7 місяців тому +2

    i like project panning as a way to get familiar with less used/less favored products and as a way to potentially eventually declutter! i have a small collection, and for the most part, it's fairly curated, but sometimes i do have a product i bought that i just end up not using or something i haven't found a way to enjoy yet, so project panning/intentionally trying to use that more is both a way to get more use out of something i spent money on, and a way to see if i can learn to work with the product better or if maybe i just don't like it and should get rid of it/relegate it to my backup makeup bag i carry in my work bag and don't care if it gets beat up or i lose it. however, i hate panning as punishment, and panning also makes me feel guilty for not using my favorite products instead of whatever i selected to pan, which is why i don't traditionally pan but instead just encourage myself to focus on certain products that are underappreciated.

  • @tinksspixiedust
    @tinksspixiedust 7 місяців тому +3

    Your advice works for skincare, too. I have backups that I wish I hadn’t bought. The flip side of this, as you pointed out of course, is that your favorite may get discontinued. There are a few products that I’ve spent way too much trying to replace. It’s not easy to find a balance.
    Having been raised by parents who lived through the Depression and WWII, I often struggle with the idea that I have to use up what I already have before I get something else. Oddly, that mindset can lead to feeling depressed, anxious, or like you don’t deserve pretty, new things or something that really works for you unlike the thing you’re using up that simply doesn’t.
    My mother, always worried about exposure to danger, always insisted on me throwing out anything where the pan was showing or the plastic base of the lipstick or blush might come in contact with my skin. If I didn’t do it, she’d throw them out when I wasn’t there. I think it may have created a hoarding in me where it comes to beauty.

    Man blushes and eyeshadows are impossible to pan when you have various even say three blushes and dont know 5 eye palettes. Wish I had known or had been more critial before buying into hype. The last couple years I haven’t had a set project pan but still found myself hyper-focusing on specific products. Really thought-provoking video!! You’re my first project panner that I’ve ever watched. I’m not intentionally panning but I am being more mindful of what I’m purchasing and making sure it’s something I’ll love. The two things I’ve learned from you are: don’t buy backups and don’t try to fill a gap you think exists with items that you’ll never gravitate towards. Those two things have cut my spending by at least 75%. I’m currently working through my backstock items of skincare and makeup and have been doing that for at least 6 months and am finally starting to make a dent 😅

    I started project panning at the beginning of this year, when I discovered your channel. Since then, my shopping habits and my view about my makeup collection changed drastically and in a positive way. I didn't find any negative aspect about project panning for now (I do it the same way you do it) also because whenever I want a brake I take one. I finished so many products and most importantly, I stopped buying things just because it's the trend. It was really making me feel bad. So I really have to thank you because you made me become a better person in some way ❤. Back-ups in make-up and skincare are such different things to me. I have to use the very same skincare products all the time in an extremely minimal routine, so I have a back-up of each item. I remind myself that I'm not allowed to branch out or my acne will just go wild. I usually get to my back-ups within half a year.

    I’ve changed the way I project pan this year for sure. In the past I would just pick whatever because I was able to be super expressive with my makeup. Now that I’m out of college in a more professional space, I honestly just dont have time to dedicate an hour everyday to doing my makeup so I really base my panning on what I wear everyday and I’m able to roll out products a lot quicker. Also on the overconsumption thing: I completely agree I’ve accumulated so much makeup from when I was watching a lot of makeup content back in 2020 and earlier and I just have so much and not everything is going to get used (most of it went bad anyway lol). I’m just much more of a mindful consumer now

    I notice when I project pan I really rip through my products and get creative. Like in an effort to use up a blush, I will crush it up and add it to some foundation or face moisturizer and use it as a cream product.
    It can be really destructive but it is oh so satisfying to see so much progress! It's helped me to look at makeup in a different way than before- as colored powders instead of just blush or eyeshadow- and b/c of that kept me from buying more stuff that I don't need! Like if I want a trendy pink bkush I will look at my eyeshadow palettes and find the same color or if I run out of a brown eyeshadow- I have a bronzer I can use! On top of that I keep my inventory organized using pinterest so of I'm hearing abt a trendy eyeshadow palette I can shop my stash as of I was shopping online and find dupes for the colors I like.

    Project panning is fun to watch but is too much pressure for me. As a mom with little kids, doing my makeup is my "me time" and I don't want to waste it stressing about what I should and shouldn't use. The way I keep my shopping in check is to give myself a budget of space to store my collection. If it fits in my basket, I can get it. If it doesn't, I can wait until I use something up.

    I really like this conversation. I have been project panning (mainly after I found your channel) for the past 3 years. I truly enjoy finishing products, so the only things in my project pans are items that naturally become close to finishing or hitting pan. For example, right now I have a concealer, under eye brightener, and a highlighter in my project pan. I just hit pan on the highlighter this morning! :) Anyways, that is how I use project panning. Otherwise, I rotate through my makeup every week. I have an Allie Glines makeup bag that I fill up every Sunday morning with makeup that is inspiring or just useful for that time of year.

    I cut way back on my makeup purchasing after I started watching project pan videos and doing some panning on my own. I have way more than I'll use before it goes bad. I didn't buy any lip products at all aside from lip balm this year because I have so much. I purchased one face palette, one bronzer, and three eyeshadow palettes, no eyeliner. I did get mascara, but only to replace what I used up, and only if I didn't have a backup. I have over 5 years of product, some unopened that I've had all year, and only one face to put it on

    I fell into beauty over consumption during the lockdowns, slow skincare and makeup was a lovely way to pass the time. But fast forward a couple years, I’ve moved out to the countryside where most people around me don’t even wear makeup, so I stick out like a sore thumb with anything more than minimal makeup, and I now spend my spare time gardening and hiking. I hardly ever wear more than skincare and tinted sunscreen most days. My makeup feels more like a space hogging reminder of a difficult time, but I spent so much money on it that I can’t bring myself to get rid of it.

    I enjoyed hearing your view on panning. I started panning back in 2019 but I feel like hard the opposite affect on me. My collection is larger than before which is so sad. I feel more pressured when panning because I need to focus on certain products and it takes away the fun of doing makeup. I also found this year that project panning STRESSED me out this year and I felt guilty for not hitting my goals, but also buying makeup 😅

    I tried project panning but I hyper focused on the chosen products WAY too much and neglected everything else and it sucked the joy right out of makeup for me!!! Now I am shopping my stash and selecting new makeup whenever I feel like I want a change. I will focus on one or two items if I am close to finishing or if I really love something. For example, right now I have a deluxe size Rare Beauty liquid blush that is close to empty so I am trying to “soft focus” on that …no tracking, no usage goal or anything…just using more than I probably would otherwise but really only when I feel like using it and I also have a L’Oréal bronzer that I’m just loving the color on me right now so I’m trying to hit pan on it. Agsin, no usage goals or anything. A “soft focus” on only two products doesn’t stifle me creatively or steal my joy from make-up so that’s working for me and I’ll still get the thrill of hitting some goals! I hope that makes sense!
    Excited to see what you do or don’t do in 2024! No matter what, will be here…just love your videos Sarah!

    I have lately wanted to start a project pan because I don't think I have ever used any product to completion other than a concealer.
    I've been watching "Best of 2023" and was being influenced to buy a few luxury bits like dior and givenchy makeup as a treat for myself, knowing well that I have plenty of makeup already!
    But after watching a few "Project pan" videos I'm not sure about it. I dont wear alot of makeup anymore and I think it would be a chore to do my makeup everyday just to use product.... I once saw a tip to keep lipstick close by while on the couch to reapply while watching TV.... I was like no thanks, that seems a bit excessive just to use a product up!
    I definitely think I should take stock of what I have and be more conscious of my spending. Its a process.
    Good luck ladies in the New Year! ❤

    I find project panning to be the most useful when I find myself near the end of a product. If I’m down to the last 10-20% of a product, I don’t see why it should stay with me another 6months-2+ years, when if i focus on that product, it could be used up in 1-2 months.

It has taught me that I prefer mini makeup where possible, it allows me to use up a product and not feel guilty about wanting to try something new! With all the amazing new formulas out there, you honestly can't find anything too unique either, so I don't get FOMO as much with new products but still enjoy what I have.

Ive learned that i can really go through lip products but ive never hit pan on an eyeshadow (despite using some definitely over 50x, maybe over 100x), while ive seen some "drill" panners hit pan on the same products in 15 uses. Not a problem but clearly we use makeup differently. I did do one nail polish project once but that was to figure out which ones expired.

    I only ever did one short-term project but I love watching any kind of project pan content. I also have a small collection, so I hit pan organically.
    Most of your thoughts made total sense to me. I kinda disagree with "not getting to know your preferences" when you're project panning. I guess it depends what panning goal you set and how many products you have. But whenever I watched project panners, they seemed to get to know the differences between the different products in their collection better (and by extension their preferences) whenever they focused on a specific product, rather than using a different one every day.
    I think the most valuable aspect of project panning is understanding how long it actually takes you to finish up a product. I wouldn't buy a backup either (or even multiple products in certain categories), because I know how long it takes me to finish makeup.
    I think whether or not any project makes us more mindful consumers really depends on why we overspend/overconsumed in the first place. Can't wait to watch Shawna's take on this, because shopping was been a coping mechanism for her in the past, which I don't think was the case for you?

    Thanks for this insight. Very thoughtful and many good points i love makeup! Especially luxury or mid to higher price point. I don’t buy a lot of drugstore because I love pretty packaging. I don’t pan. I have a lot of makeup and I love trying new things, new formulas. I do minimal base products as I generally don’t wear foundation so I only have 3 or 4 foundation and a few concealers, and a handful of powders that I use sparingly on my dry skin. I have stopped buying things I know I wont use like powder blush. But I am a cream and liquid blush crazy person! Also a lot of cream bronzers. I can’t resist the blushes especially tho. I know they expire eventually but when I love a formula I have to buy all the colors I like. I am picky about colors. So I will have 10 cream blushes in a similar color because the formulas are a bit different. I do use most of it some, because I like to rotate color families by season. I gravitate toward rosy browns all year. Pink in spring, corals and reds in summer when I’m tanner, burnt burgundy in fall and plummy pink or brighter burgundies in winter. I rotate eye shadows as well. I have a lot of those too but mostly smaller palettes and quads and quints. But I definitely have a blush problem lol.

I have finished so many products in 2023 and I’m very proud so I want to keep it up. I think I’m pretty good at not pressuring myself, if I want to use other products I won’t stop myself 😂

    I love watching and looking at other folks' panning content. I consider 2023 a year of reckoning with myself on a lot of things - my beauty habits/preferences included. I am coming to terms with what is my real/realistic daily 'lazy' way (simple skincare and five-minute face powder-brows-mascara-lip balm) versus my ~fantasy~ self of eyeshadows, a whole tray of perfumes, lipgloss and lipsticks, multiple products and tools, a ritualistic multistep routine, etc. I will never have as much free time as I did in my early 20s (and honestly, during 2020-2021). This is my next step in a long journey of figuring out what actually works for me on a daily basis -- my last big beauty breakthrough was "if it's genuinely not working, or it's breaking me out, I need to let it go and stop pressuring myself to use it up for the sake of the money spent on it and for the sake of hitting pan or emptying the product." I also have a lil bit of the collector-crow-brain, which makes it hard to pass up collections, seasonal/limited edition items, and value/mini sets of things from brands that I know I enjoy -- but I have GOT to make myself go back to a replace-only manner of spending. also, the space that beauty products take up once you have everything piled together is UNGODLY. I at least have gotten better about designating small, curated spaces for products... admittedly they're very full, but hey, I'm working on it.
    I think it's a great sign of your personal and consumer growth to know that your panning content is evolving, and you aren't boxing yourself in to something that wasn't working just right for you for the sake of content - it will be cool to compare in a year or two's time!

    Panning definitely has opened my eyes to how long it takes to use up products. I’ve been panning (terribly) since 2016 and still haven’t managed to do more than finish a handful of eyeshadows, and I’ve only ever finished 1 blush, and it was a delux sample size. I have enough makeup that I am on a replacement only no buy currently. Luckily there’s not much on the market currently that I really want, so the desire is minimal. I’m very happy playing with what I own.
    Fully agree with the backups thing. My HG mascara is no longer a HG, and I’ve managed to get through all my backups, with only one left. I’m looking forward to trying something new. Also fully agree that project panning sometimes doesn’t allow you to do your makeup the way you’d normally do it. There are many days I’ve used a product because I’ve felt I had to, and not because I want to.
    Thanks for the thought provoking video!

Usually either break makeup or get tired of it and then end up getting rid of. Still trying to downsize my collection the only thing I struggle with is eyeshadow palettes. Was able to get rid of a few palettes this last year by moving them to magnetic palette. I really just like sticking to ones I like and then repurchasing as needed.

I know personally I’m not buy makeup much this coming year..I’m just not as interested in it anymore as I was when UA-cam Covid spend makeup but season (not literally, just how it seemed) I definitely bought more than I ever had, 2020-2022 I bought so much that I don’t use. I have even decluttered a few times. I think I’m going to do a declutter again so going into the new year I have a fresh start of product to give some love and attention too, and maybe ignite my interest in makeup again. 😊

    I use up lip gloss and lip masks fairly regularly, since even when I wear no other makeup I will use those items. I use up my favorite BB cream every once in a while since I tend to hate every other foundation product. I used to use up concealer regularly, but I don't use that as often as I used to. I did fully pan a blush once, but I had owned it for at least 5 years, for most of that time it had been my only blush, and it had a large amount of pan already. At this point, I am trying to go back to my prepandemic levels of consumption, where I would usually only purchase makeup if I needed it for a show, and would usually only get rid if something if it would not work, if I used it up, or if it went bad. It is difficult now that I know how much is out there!

    I do a thing with rotating my make up between my top and bottom drawer...i just rotate whatever products whenever i feel like though, not on a set schedule.
    I like new make up content because, at least for eye shadow palettes i can examine my 10 different palettes and see if the newest thing could just be duped by a combo of what i have already.

  • @blueberrycowboy
    @blueberrycowboy 5 місяців тому

    i find that project panning makes me get bored with my collection and makes me want to get more stuff so I don't really do it anymore.
    There are a few categories I can focus on without having that problem (generally it's when I get close to the end of a powder, a a concealer, etc. but those are categories where I don't really have an excess in the first place).
    One thing I want to try is having a focus palette for this year - I'll probably have to get rid of the SophXRevolution palette by the end of 2024 and I just want to give it some more love before it goes because it's a bit too neutral for my taste nowadays but I'm very emotionally attached to it and there are a few colours I still truly love (and that are just useful to have for days when I do need to look presentable and can't go out with blue eyeshadow but those days are pretty rare atm) and just trying to combine it with other palettes.
    But in general, I prefer projects that make me go through my collection - using every blush, every palette, etc. & purchase limits (although I'm still searching my sweet spot here).
    This makes sure I don't exclusively use the same three items, helps make decisions with decluttering if needed & just really shows how much variety I truly have.
    I'm currently slightly above my sweet spot with my collection as a whole so I just really want to get to know it again after a while of not wearing a lot of creative make up because of limited time, see which products I don't love anymore and which ones I can semi organically use up without the pressure a traditional project pan gives me. I want to fall back in love with my collection as a whole.

    • @blueberrycowboy
      @blueberrycowboy 5 місяців тому

      Also, on the note of make up not being understood as a hobby -
      While I do limit myself a bit more with make up than with books (my other hobby with a bigger collection) because it expires at some point, things falling to the wayside and being completely forgotten about up to the point of loosing interest completely (basically expiring) is also the case here. Just because it doesn't technically expire doesn't mean we shouldn't be mindful consumers either (not that you're saying that; I have however noticed that a lot of people don't consider that when complaining about people having a lot of make up (not talking rooms full to the point that it's full blown wasteful but definitely more than one "needs") while having large collections of other things themselves).
      I also think that it's worth looking into from what point on one considers a product wasted. If I love and use a product regularly, I don't consider it wasted, even if I don't fully finish it. If I can rehome a product (which 90% of the time I can), it's a waste of my money but not wasted product because I carefully consider who would like a product. If it's already in your collection, loving it is worth something. For new products I have stricter considerations on what would be wasteful but things that you already have? Make up is first and foremost a hobby to me and I don't want it to feel like a chore.
