    A superbly explained and well paced tutorial video. One of the best I’ve seen, literally ever. Inspired by your overclock, I, like countless others who have commented on this video purchased a Xeon 5670 and overclocked it while watching your video. In fact it’s so well done that I still come back to it now and then to do some tweaking. Well done @michaelcooper.

    Found this very helpful as I had changed from an i7 920 to an x5650 on a P6T. Chickened out of ocing it back then, but this was a really well explained and systematic approach. I tried DRAM bus voltage on Auto and that was stable, but as the Bios help suggests the Auto range can go far higher than the max voltage you state I went back to manual 1.6 (stress testing right now - will go to 1.64 if needed). The original i7 build came from a shop and they seem to have done a good job with air cooling from back then. Running only in 60s with Prime95 and Cinebench. I’m using Twilight Render plus Prime95 for a longer stress test since that will run much longer than Cinebench.

    I'm running my Xeon X5670 @4,56Ghz stable with Mac OS X 10.14.5 (Mojave). Geekbench3 scores about 21000pts. This old 6 core CPU is still great and quite capable, it's an overclocking beast.
    My motherboard is Gigabyte X58A-UD7 rev.1 with 24Gb DDR3 1600. Also Cinebench scores over 1000, not bad for a nearly 10yo machine.....

    Hello Michael.
    Two questions: you stated at 5:28 that the UCLK should be double the RAM speed. Then at 20:38 when you raise the RAM speed you don’t change the UCLK?
    Second question: Should I set the QPI link back to auto at the end of the overclock or should I leave it at the slowest possible as you stated ?
    Thanks. And great video. Helped me a lot.

    • @paulburkey2
      @paulburkey2 2 роки тому

      Good questions if you're going for mild overclocking keep the UCLK at double the DRAM but I like the reverse approach set the QPI link to the lowest setting and set the UCLK to half the QPI link speed but first determine or set the DRAM frequency as high as it will boot with everything set to auto and manually set the appropriate DDR voltage and timings. never use auto for the ram voltage it can overvolt damaging the memory controller once you reach stable performance target you can try raising the UCLK on step up at a time for performance increase just keep an eye out for stability issues, you could try setting the QPI to auto at this point, but it will likely fail just keep it set to the lowest setting

    It's best to run the ram at 1600 and your base clock 200. Then a 21 multi will be a safe and optimal 4200mhz. The CPU rarely needs more than 1.3v for that speed so you can try and drop the vcore to also bring temps down

      If it's running in the 80'sC that is a little high. Is that when you are running your programs or while you're testing with prime95 or something similar? If it is with your programs you might try lowering the voltage to the CPU and see if is still stable at 4.01GHz. If is just when running prime95 I wouldn't worry about it. The step every tutorial skips is set your BIOS back to defaults (remember to then set your hard-drives back to the right boot priority - if, say you've updated your OS at some point) and THEN update BIOS. And be careful you have the right BIOS for your specific mobo. Just banged in a 5670 to a vanilla P6T v1. The CPU will take a 24 multiplier but the mobo has a max of 21. The UCLK seems to max at about 3200ish - but you might get higher if you clean the heatsinks on the MoBo itself (and replace the thermal paste -which, to my shame, I have not done for 13 years). Anyway, I've got it up to 3.8ghz running stably, on the third go. Cinebench did two full runs, but it was pushing 93C. Can probably push it higher if I do some maintanence to the case fans and mobo heatsinks. Probably tweak the voltages a bit, but so far so good. I hope any of that information is useful to anyone. Also if you're not satisfied - put some decent RAM in there and take advantage of the three channels - it will do much more than any CPU upgrade.

    I like the shoot for the moon approach its faster to get stable overclock, I disable the spread spectrums you can enable them later if needed for RF interference, I found you really don't need to have UCLK double the DRAM frequency I set the UCLK to half the QPI Link data rate but first set the DRAM frequency as high as it will boot at stock clock speeds 1333 then set the QPI link data rate to the lowest setting above slow mode and set the UCLK to half the QPI clock and let the BCLK raise the frequencies from there to achieve Higher DRAM clock to match CPU overclock target lower the multiplier and raise the BCLK and manually adjust memory timings to match use AIDA64 to determine which timings are appropriate for the target memory speed. when I reach the highest overclock without overheating issues, I focus on tightening the memory timings one at a time for max performance and stability. IMHO prime 95 puts an unrealistic load on the system, I use core temp, along with cinebench R15, R20, AIDA 64, games and programs to test overclock stability. 3D mark is also good to validate performance increase, your CPU voltage can go higher then 1.35v safely 1.35v is just the auto voltage limit, the first thing that needs to be set to manual is the DRAM voltage! because leaving it set to auto can cause damage to the memory controller never exceed 1.65v I set it to whatever the modules are rated at and slowly raise or lower it for stability & efficiency' that's why I like to use a minimum of DDR3 1866 for overclocking , or under clock DDR3 2133 is better. X58 has a performance increase up to 2000 DRAM frequency going higher is pointless unless you need a little extra to achieve max BCLK-CPU core target but keep an eye on performance going over 2000 on DRAM frequency I'm no expert so please feel free to add or correct my comment Happy overclocking

      Kristián Kalmár Your CPU is overclockable but it mostly depends on the motherboard and the BIOS as to whether or not it can actually be done. You have to have the proper settings in the motherboard's BIOS . If the computer came with a Xeon Processor it's most likely either a workstation or server which under most circumstances do not allow overclocking in the Bios. Also it looks like that's a 4 core 8 thread processor not a 16 core processor.

Normally most of the guys running around @ the Internet are suggesting not to use it, because it leads to more BCLK fluctuations and may therefore raise the chance of an instability occuring.

    Hello Michael.
    I'm pretty sure Spread Spectrum was a requirement to meet certain specification about interference resilience and it is usually better left Off as it can lead to instability and doesn't do anything in a home environment. There was a post about it on an OC forum where an HP engineer explained exactly the purpose but I can't find it.
    I took the exact same upgrade path as you from an i7 920 to the x5675 for 36$. I'm pretty happy about the change, it is a beast.
    But I find your voltages pretty high for a 4GHz OC, also your uncore frequency is set rather low. I believe the stock frequency for uncore is about 2.66GHz (133*20) and you have it set at 2.1 while the core is quite OCed.
    My setup is at 4.09Ghz (186*22), voltages are 1.225vcore, 1.225vtt and 1.8pll, uncore sits at 3.16GHz (186*17). It scored 940 on cinebench multi-threaded (970 at 4.2GHz)

    Why did you use such a bad cooler? (Freezer 7 Pro v2?)Wouldn't it be more stable at lower temps. Most aio or even a Noctua 14/15 would cut the temps by 20 degrees at least. Have you gone back at tried with a better cooling solution?

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  7 років тому

      Pholiage Even at the highest overclock the temperatures weren't close to the TJ Maxx. I did install a much larger air cooler which brought the temperatures down and more importantly for me the noise down. I don't recommend all in one water coolers. They do give you lower temperatures but there are more things to go wrong with all-in-one water coolers or water coolers in general. Aside from the fan failing there's also the pump and possible leaks. When you think of one leaking most people think there's going to be a bunch of liquid being spilled inside the computer and ruining components. It's more likely that a very very small leak will happen and the liquid will simply evaporate. That leaves your CPU temperatures going through the roof. I've been working with computers for 20 years and in that time I've only come across two CPUs that failed. Both were caused by overheating after a small leak developed in the all-in-one water cooler.

      Roberto Iosupescu If some programs don't work on your computer when the CPU is it 4Ghz that means it's not completely stable. I would try either raising the voltage on the CPU or backing off to 3.9 gigahertz.

    Very cool , I have a dual e5645 I need to try this on it! It’s a super micro motherboard I’m not sure if I have all the twinkle settings but I’m gonna check it out. Would be nice if I can get the 3.2 - 3.8 GHz

    I have my i7 920 for 9 years and its working @3.6ghz for an year 24/7. By now i have no problem with the cpu, but i am thinking for a little upgrade. I have the same asus p6t delux mb /bought with the cpu/ and want to try this xeon 5670 and i know it's comparable to mb, but there is a xeon 5690. Is it wise to go for 5690 with same motherboard?

    • @jordanterziev8132
      @jordanterziev8132 7 років тому

      There are people running 5690s on P6Ts on the web so it shouldn't be an issue. That chip, however, is rated at 130 watts (perhaps due to the higher stock clock) so would need better cooling, and I doubt the 200-300Mhz more clock before cpu chip/mobo limitations kick in warrants a 2x-3x price over a 5650 or a 5660, which happily reach 4Ghz in almost all cases. I'd advise you to grab a cheap one and be done with it unless you're looking to break records, and then still there are no guarantees, so its really no use paying the premium for a daily rig.

      I wouldn't recommend buying a new motherboard just to overclock one of those processors. This video on overclocking the processor really only works money-wise if you've already got the motherboard and processor capable of overclocking. Otherwise the system is about 10 years old at this point and you're better off spending money on a new system.

    Well so far I did all the settings recommended and I have been running Prime 95 for 20 minutes, Max temp is 70C average is 60C. OC to 4GHZ , 182.00 X 22 for 4004.00MHZ, I use to have it overclocked to 4GHZ lasty year but one of my 6 sticks of ram was bad So i was getting errors, kept getting worst over the last year, So I recently got 3 X 4GB ram and problem seems to be gone now.

      @jordanterziev8132 7 років тому

      Unless you've got a 250+ watt GPU, you've got plenty of juice to do it; Right now I run an older, hungrier 130w xeon @4.2 and a 270x toxic (180w+) on a 550w PSU with no issues. I've read posts that the SE is struggling with higher BCLKs (FSBs) so you might need some patience to get it stable but on this chip, 4ghz should be granted. I'll have the exact P6T SE to play with in a few days so I'll come back with my experience :)

      The settings with be a little different on the gigabyte motherboard but yes. This link is to the original set of videos and shows the settings in a Gigabyte motherboard. It still won't match to what you have but should explain the process to the point where you can make it work.
