      I have that chip,but recently upgraded to a ryzen 1700. It really shines when you overclock it. I pushed it to 4 ghz with a 980 ti. The only thing is it uses tons of power. Its sits at 11k in firestrike physics score and 14k with a 4ghz overclock.

    • @johnny_rook
      @johnny_rook 7 років тому +4

      +Chubbyemu If you overclock that X5650 to 4Ghz (can certainly do 3,8Ghz at least on that cooler at ~1.3v), it will most likely make your computer last those 3 years you were talking about. Damn, had you OC'ed that 930 to 4Ghz and you would be rocking current Core i5 CPUs stock level of performance already! I know this because, I have a 920 C0 from 2008 still kicking, as well, and I've seen the benchmark scores it produces @4Ghz. That's why Overclocking exists in the first place: to squeeze the most performance possible out of an outdated chip; I don't overclock a chip that is a brand new product. Why should I? Is the fastest already. But I do start overclocking when that chip gets replaced on the market by a new, better and faster chip

    It's crazy how a currently $20 server CPU from 2010 is faster than an originally $300 high end consumer CPU from 2010. Although I saw it for $65. Server CPUs become much cheaper than consumer CPUs over time because big companies are selling them in bulk because they upgraded to newer CPUs. Other components don't really become that much cheaper to be really useful. Often a lower end modern component is faster and uses less electricity while costing the same.

      Nothing crazy. The "currently $20" originally costed $600-$1000.
      The LGA771 platform was flawed with FBDIMM power usage (15W each FBDIMM), LGA1366 platform has 40W chipset overhead compared to the next generation chipsets. My PC can't consume less than 100W@wall while similar ivy bridge i5 idles at under 60W.

Then what you do is reset the bios (Take out the battery on the motherboard for 30 secconds and put it back in) And go to the settings right before you crashed. For your Graphics card use programns like MSI Afterburner, and its again trail and error.

    I'm fine with 1080p, and I would probably still be running 1680x1050, if that monitor had not broken down. Especially when it comes to resolution, I don't quite see how the benefit outweighs the requirements anymore. The jump from 320x200 CGA to 640x480 VGA was nice, but 4k doesn't make all that much of a difference to me compared to full HD, neither does 144Hz, neither does HDR. And don't get me wrong, those things are all nice, but I can get on just fine without them.
    And except for screen resolution, computer development has slowed down significantly. A PC bought in '96 was outdated two or three years later, but this is not the case anymore today. This computer you have there could probably last me another 3 years. Of course, I do not stream or make youtube videos for an audience that may have the bestest screens on the market at all time and expects the content to look the part. :)

      Mark M Macbooks really differ in quality. In my experience they are really durable when you handle them carefully AND they don't have discrete GPUs. Because discrete GPUs really suffer from apples bad thermal management:
      -Radeon X1600 had more fails then usual
      -Nvidia Bug
      -Radeon 6xxx had more fails then usual

I have the motherboard schematic so I can fix any logic issues if it starts to fail. I will keep this laptop for as long as possible. At this point I'm getting frustrated with Sierra and dread upgrading to the next version that I know will just include more bugs and glitches. I'm going to upgrade to lubuntu as soon as I can get access to a fast enough internet connection.

      sydmichel which can be said of life. Your cells divide and die all the time, even brain cells. With all the changes that happen in your body, when do you stop being you? Were you ever really you to begin with?
      In this, the only thing to not change is the motherboard. Maybe it's an entirely different computer if that changes. Also he changed those parts gradually over time, just like the cells in your body. So if you are you, then this is still the same computer.

      @markm0000 7 років тому

      Seriously you're spending more on electricity to keep that old rust than replacing it with a core2 based system at the very least. The 771 platform is now entirely obsolete and considered a space heater. I'm not hating on your system, it's just not economically viable to keep turned on.

    • @drunkenpumpkins7401
      @drunkenpumpkins7401 7 років тому +1

      I have still pretty great workloads. a core 2 based system can't really processes it well and a modern Pentium solution is also out of the question. At least I need a modern i5 4xxx or Ryzen 5 cpu to get the calculations afloat.

    • @rhuwyn
      @rhuwyn 7 років тому

      Mark the 771 and the 775 are more or less equivalent sockets for server and desktop respectively. There are mods for using a 771 based CPU in 775 based boards...A core2 is not an upgrade it's a lateral move or a downgrade depending on where the CPU comes in in the span of the lifespan of the socket.

    Reminds of my first new car: Acura 2006 RSX Type-S. Previously, I had owned a Chevrolet Beretta (abysmal car, to say the least) and a Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T. The Honda/Acura product was expensive for a hatchback but had a phenomenal engine that was a tiny (2.0 Liter I4) with a 6-speed manual. In the heart of the RSX-S was the might K20 engine. A tiny engine that had one metric that few car makers could boost, the magnificent 100hp+/Liter mark. Most importantly, the reliability of this engine was sky high even thou it had a redline above 8000 r.p.m.'s. For 10 years, I owned the car, I took cared of it; oil changes (every 5000 miles), radiator fluid replacement (every year), power steering fluid (changed yearly), and transmission fluids changed yearly. I drove that car like a mad man. Eight years in, I had an oil analysis done, the results were way above average. Basically the various metal deposits were low and the presence of coolant was non existent (measurements proving the engine was still in pristine condition). My RSX-S was good for another decade of driving. However, exactly ten years of ownership and I lost the car in an accident. Was planning on keeping the car, at least, another 8 years. 8 more years without a car note and driving a car that could still out perform most automobiles coming from the likes of Acura, Honda, and Toyota.
    Yes, buying quality counts. I could talk about a pair of shoes that I purchased 12 years ago that have lasted me until the present but the same underlying principle still stands: overall quality, many times, is cheaper than just buying cheap products when you understand what you're buying.

    Good shout but upgrading of PCs in a useful sense hasn't been possible for years, when I first started building my own PCs in the late 90s you could throw a new CPU into a five year old motherboard, I had motherboards which had at least three CPU upgrades that gave orders of magnitude additional performance, you just can't do that now.
    I very much doubt this is all down to new technology on the board, it's just capitalism in full flow, firmware updates could surely support at least the next generation of CPU but the board manufacturers just choose not to do it.
    On the flip side I think the lifespan of a CPU, if you buy at the high-ish end, has increased. I'm still using a 4770k with DDR3 and it doesn't feel like something I built 5 years ago, the absolute need to upgrade just isn't there, whereas in the Pentium 4/Athlon days the processor would feel out of date after maybe 2 years.

    I've built 3 PCs in my life. The first one I don't quite remember in detail. I'm pretty sure it was a pentium 4 with 512mb of ram. The second pc was an intel q6600 quad core with 4 gigs of ddr2 ram and a geforce 8800gts. At the time of building, at 2007, it cost me around $2000 which I had saved up working a temp job as a teenager during summer. That one pc lasted about 9 years with updates (8 gigs of ram and a geforce 660 to replace the dead 8800gts) and ran relatively well for my needs until finally the motherboard itself had died.
    Fast forward to today and I'm on a new pc built a year and a half ago that cost me about the same as the previous, with a core i7 8700k, 32 gigs of ddr4 ram, and a rtx 2080 with the intention that it lasts around 7-9 years. So in a matter of speaking, I agree with you on getting stuff to last.

      X58 boards can be found for under 300 bucks, let alone under 130 bucks. It doesn't help that they weren't as mass produced as other motherboard lines.

      LeoInterVir at least in germany (but in other countries as well I think) X58 boards are known to keep their value pretty good. Here you CAN'T find 1366 boards for 50$, all other old boards, hell yes, their dirt cheap, but even used "cheaper" X58s cost over 100€ here, good boards like good gigabytes or the flagship ASUS ones even more.
      But you are true by saying you can't compare the motherboard/cpu combos as the prices will differ in the used market

    Dude you can get so much more performance out of that pc by overclocking. leaving it on stock speed is such a waste of performance.

      Since we still can buy Celeron 300A's I highly doubt OC'ing can have THAT big of a deal on life span of CPU.
      Basicly : If you stay below Intel's recommended voltages for CPU, OC can't damage CPU in any way. There is no "transistor cycle limit" after which they destroy themselves.

      Yep the only thing that will really harm it if you stay within spec is heat, decent cooler takes care of that.

      Life time does not get infuenced that much my i7 4790K runs 5Ghz on all 4 cores for over 2 years now on 1.28 Volts over 1.3 volts it will degrade in life its just about the voltages and heat that degrade hardware just boosting a clock speed without touching voltages and have enough cooling will actually keep the system stable ;)

    I have a PC with an I7 3930k and 16GB of ram since 2012. Over the years it has gotten some upgrades. The upgrades were mostly adding more SSDs. and upgrading the Graphics Card from a GTX 680 to a GTX 1080 TI. The system also has a SoundBlaster Recon3D Soundcard. But I haven't upgraded the Soundcard since its been working fine for me ever since. The system has 6 cores and runs at 3.20Ghz stock. When Turbo Mode is enabled. I get 3.8Ghz clock speed since I'm using a Phanteks CPU cooler on it. However the motherboard supports PCI-E 3.0. But the 3930k only supports PCI-E 2.0. So the graphics card and everything else was running at the 2.0 specs. If I upgrade the CPU to a 4930k. That CPU supports PCI-E 3.0. So I could probably see a jump in performance when the Graphics Card is using the PCI-E 3.0 specs which it was made for. The 4930k is not cheap but I have seen the prices on them going down a bit recently.

    I have been scouring through the internet for a video to show appreciation for old beast like this and at last found yours. Youre just ascertaining people as long as your PC plays the game you wanted to play and does what you wanted do with it, it will last you for a really2 long time. Good video bruh, you get a sub from me. Wish many pc gaming channels could follow your lead into this but i guess its wishfull thinking.
