I have updated my x58 / i7 970 with 12go or dry RAM and one gtx1060 6g this last months. My setup was purchased in 2010! And I can play with all games in ultra setting with FHD resolution 12 years after! Best setup of the computer's history!

Amazing review! Still running an X58 machine as my daily driver and not planning to change any time soon. (Asus P6T-SE, Xeon x5650@4.0Ghz, 48GB DDR3, Radeon RX Vega 64) I've been using this system since 2017, I found the motherboard in a recycling center with bent pins, I gave 10EUR for it, straightened out all the damaged pins, bought the cheapest 1366 Xeon I could find on ebay (20EUR for the X5650) and filled all the DIMM slots. It is running 24/7 since then, super stable, running Debian as default and Windows 10 for some casual gaming (mostly Doom Eternal and Snowrunner).

I love the period correct and modern GPU comparisons! I don't see that a lot, in fact, I don't think I've ever seen it done this way... at least not directly.
Still lovin' what you got going on! I knew my dual Xeon system could still hang with a newer card, and that an FX series AMD can still pull some rabbits out of the hat - but this was a chip to be reckoned with in the 2010 era world, and still stands up!

Still running X58 platforms here, on the home front. My daughters refuse to let me upgrade their platforms because they like their PCs just as they are. They've used newer PCs and they're not impressed. That's incredible considering it's 2023. One daughter uses the i7 960K chip and the other daughter is using an i7 920. These chips are built like tanks. They're hard to kill and if you're nice to them they'll last a lifetime.

*Except for video editing, my x58 has been great for gaming.* I started on an i7 920, then upgraded to a xeon w3680 & overclocked to 4.4ghz (massive improvement for modern games and multitasking).
I was sad to _downgrade_ from win7 to win10. Besides the quick boot time, once loaded, win10 was noticeably a slow laggy OS vs win7 and also killed use of my X-fi creative sound card (a big loss if you have a library of older games you want to play).
*_Do_** upgrade GPU's.* A 3060 pairs nicely with an overclocked x58, minimal bottleneck in most games for 1080p gaming (higher than 1080p becomes more _GPU_ restricted). For the rest:
If you've already got an x58, maybe don't upgrade unless you really have to for a specific game worth the experience with your friends.
But I'd also recommend not spending more than $100 modernizing an x58 either. It's gotten to the point where it would be better to either save up for a new system build or put that money into a used but newer system that isn't lacking AVX.
It's just now crossing the point where *games are starting to expect avx* (eg Starfield is currently not playable without it). It's a pity, since the x58 platform is plenty capable. AVX1 requirement has been patched away many times (officially or unofficially patched). I played through SW Squadrons with unofficially patched win7 compatibility.
But I think we are at a point where most of the people who would have done the work to patch like that have slowly migrated past that need. *Such patches are going to become more rare.*
*To build a new system that would **_noticeably_** beat my old system, I would have had to spend around $420 to $1,000+ or it's not worth the bother.* Knowing myself, I'd be inclined for the upsell nicer option each time, so it probably wouldn't be the

As long as AVX instructions is not needed, this old X58 platform still has some to give. The memory bandwidth (triple channel) and latency is actually quite good. You want (triple channel) 12 or 24 GB DDR3-1600@cl7 memory or 1866@cl9. It cn really make some difference over those "standard" 1600cl11. (you want cl9 or lower for X58). Xeons 6C/12T are also worth upgrading to. The IPC on X58 is not as bad as many think. Remember that IPC should be compared in similar clockspeed.
Today a X58(LGA1366) platform coupled with some good low cl memory, can outperform a similar clocked Sandy/Ivy Bridge (LGA1155) due to the memory bandwidth advantage. Many modern games utilize high bandwidth on RAM, way more than 10 years ago.
The most negative about the X58, is efficiency (power consumption). It that field it is outdated. (and Sandy/Ivy is way more power efficient) The Wall power is normally 100W+ @idle, and about 250W @stock if using the i7-960 @100% load. Even the 1st gen 6C/12T Ryzen 5 1600, only use around half the power, while easily outperforming the best 6C/12T LGA1366 CPUs @stock speed.

AMD R and RX cards, as well as Nvidia RTX cards often have issues posting on pre Sandybridge boards due to Legacy Bios issues. Often you will get a blank screen or an intermittent post screen. Sometimes if you're lucky there is a BIOS update for this from the motherboards manufacture. This is sort of the reverse of how UEFI has a CSM setting to allow older legacy BIOS video boards to post. I hope that this helps someone.

Surprisingly nice for a quad core in that generation there were 6 cores on the market and it makes me wonder if they'd still perform, a while back after it was already dated and cheap I used a xeon X5650 which was also LGA 1366 and an X5677, and I think your best in socket chip for X58 would be the Xeon X5690 which at least on US ebay I see for $30. Seeing the triple channel memory is such a throwback. I used 1366 pretty extensively back in 2015 ish I think it was when it was already good and cheap, but I leaned towards the outdated xeons for the cost savings, I think you could still OC them but I didn't have a board with the support.

The games list was pretty good and I believe you should keep it the same in order to perhaps build a sort of an archive of the results.
A few months ago I bought a DFI x58 motherboard with an i7 920 8gb of RAM and a decent cooler for 35€.
I didn't have much time so I just effortlessly clocked it to the levels of the 960 of so. It's quite hot during the summer in Greece so keeping the CPU temperatures low was my priority and it stays under 67° C during the prime 95 test so it's fine.
When I'll find some more time I will try to reach 4Ghz .
A nice idea would be to try and update the bios of the motherboard (if it's not already updated) in order to support 6core x58 Xeons which are quite cheap.

The question it’s what games you play and what resolution. After we answer that question then we can give an exact answer. If you want a generalized answer like:- Are modern titles playable in a system with this CPU? I would say yes. Do you have to play with this CPU? I would say no unless you have no other option or someone just gifted you such a system.

And the RAM speed just went along with the higher cpu speed.
The funny part is, that i did not have to do anything special regarding latency or ram voltage (kept it on auto)
So i did nothing in pariculair to the ram itself.
      So basically in a nutshell:
      1. increased the BLCK (also ram speed goes up simultaniously).
And increased the voltage of the CPU for stability.
So all other things (including ram settings) are all on "auto"
The ram i have in my system is: "Kingston Hyper-X Beast 1866".
It could just be plain luck, that my ram is overclocking so easily without having to adjust anything besides cpu voltage.

personally i would avoid the first gen core i chips and the X58 platform as getting a hold of a decent motherboard that isn't a chinese clone, as those chinese motherboards can be hit or miss,
lot of people should be shooting for Ivy Bridge as a lot of the 2000 chips are really cheep and motherboards are plenty plus you can always get a 3000 chip.
plus the X58 chipset runs HOT unlike a lot of the Ivy Bridge chipsets, i think of the X58 platform as a collectors platform due to the prices of the motherboards .
plus Ivy Bridge chipsetss support faster RAM in the end and more pcie lanes.

the LGA 1366 socket is, and pretty much always has been a bitch to buy for. it was expensive to start. It was also unreasonably expensive 5 years ago, when I was looking for older hardware for a "new" gaming rig. As well as still being too expensive (in my opinion) to justify a second-hand purchase for a "vintage" rig today. im in my mid 20s, and the i7 960 was the first CPU I had in my own rig (super fuckin lucky, I know), so this is fascinating content to me. But the whole time I had it, it certainly wasn't a practical decision. I got it for free, fixing a PC someone foolishly pawned off to me as trash, because they thought it was completely broken, and I spent more money trying to keep that X58 motherboard and CPU than I would have just getting a decent modern upgrade. The i3 9100f that was in my rig from 2 years ago was leagues better, and it cost me like 95 USD. The motherboard being about the same price. I have a special place in my heart for 1366, but looking back it was a rough socket to start on compared to my peers that got into building PC's with new hardware. Im thankfully part of an ecosystem now though, fairly new parts get passed down to me, then I pass down parts to my mom.

Hello mate! Yes, agreed, that is why Intel also did "mainstream" which was often as good and priced more reasonably. But then, there was, is and might always will be place for more extreme platforms. Single GPU users never needed the X58, but for those with 3 GTX 580's would argue haha! In UK, and if lucky, you can get your hands on relatively cheap boards, that being said, the price/power ratio makes no sense, it's dead.

Its had the windows 7 to 10 upgrade, but basically its the same build as it started with in 2010 and runs fine. Its got SSD's now which it didn't have when new.
