    New player here, been playing with 1.0 for a few days, enjoying figuring things by myself as reviews said this was one of the great pleasure of this game. I found this 1st video extremely useful, with a lot explained, and a lot hinted at which, for me, incite discovery and self experiment. Also, lots of doc on the wiki to figure what's going on keyboard wise... Thx a lot !!

    Some thoughts:
    * you're using furnace without opening it and explaining what happens there
    * you have also different toolbar comparing to a player who just starts. AFAIR blueprints icons are not visible for new players at the start.

    Nilaus is one of the best players of Factorio. I have learned a lot from his videos about the game for over three years now, so for all you new players, listen learn and pick up the hints while he does this lets play for you guys and girls. He's an interesting guy with a wealth of tips that can help break the challenge of how to get a feel for the game as well as the intricate details of getting all the way up to a mega base. Thanks again Nilaus. Keep up the good work.

    Found a link to this playlist on the Steam forums. Gotta say, it's gone much smoother than my first two attempts at getting this going. I didn't realise we could go direct from miner to smelter, for e.g., and used belts everywhere. This is much better to get started! Will continue along with the playlist to learn then will try it out on my own. Thanks for putting the time into this, even if it was 2 years ago :)

    With the Cntrl / Shift clicking - It's Cntrl in both cases. Cntrl + left click from outside will pick up as much as it can. From inside, Cntrl + left click will pick up as much of whatever you clicked as it can (OR, if you click an empty space, pick up everything just like clicking it from the outside). Shift + left click will transfer the entire STACK of whatever you click, but not all of that particular item.

    Right, considering this series is supposed to be for newer players, it might be ideal to go over the basics of controls and shortcuts rather than just jumping right into building things. Like there are a lot of hotkeys and whatnot that not everyone remembers, but the basics of interaction should be a thing. It doesn't even need to be standalone, but rather as you go about doing it, say what you are doing. Like left click to open the inventory, right click to do this, ctrl-left click to do that as you are doing the various things would be incredibly helpful.

    It's early, but I always find that the biters are a bit overwhelming the first time you encounter them in the game. You should explain how to shoot so people can practice before they are being attacked. It's good you built the bullet assembler, but just the basics of armor/turret/pipe walls are really helpful to have in your early game tool kit especially if you don't make a giant starting area.

    Here are my notes for improving the commentary on the series to make it more beginner friendly.
    Be specific and intentional with your word choices. For example in pretty much every YT video you make, you call something by the wrong name ("red circuits" instead of "red science" for example). This is highly confusing to someone who doesn't know what circuits and science even are.
    4:15 You mentioned trees are a "pretty good" source of fuel. You know they are the worst source of fuel in the game (in MJ) but they are what is available now. You don't want a noob thinking they need to cut down trees in order to fuel their furnaces. They don't know that experienced players burn the wood because otherwise it just piles up.
    You also zoomed through the crafting menu. Missed opportunity to explain how you can build something even if you have only the raw resources by first automatically crafting the intermediates.
    8:03 you have to ctrl + Left Click to pick up inventory from the furnaces. Again, you know this so intuitively that you said you could run past and hold control, which technically won't work. Precise language is important.
    8:34 missed opportunity to explain how the miners (and other things) consume fuel (green line) and produce output (red line)
    9:20 your keyboard and mouse presses are really loud in the mic
    10:08 ooh, so close. you corrected from stone to coal, but said furnace instead of burner miner. But, good effort on trying to get the precise wording.
    11:26 GG on the half/whole thing.
    18:54 missed opportunity to talk about power pole power footprints when placing the inserters.
    Overall with the power, you didn't say what was going on the belt when you placed it, and your overall plan for why power is where it is.
    20:20 great explanation of fuel consumption based on demand
    23:43 the ore ran out. could talk about how you can see the resources underneath and what ores running out means for expansion
    24:12 why logistics next?
    26:30 really gotta explain the ins and outs of these mini assembler setups. ingredients go into a box, they are inserted into the assembler (which way do the assemblers go?) then the assembler makes something, and then the inserter puts it into a storage box for you to pick up.
    If this comment is seen as mean by someone reading it, please note that Nilaus has said in streams and other videos that he thinks he'll have a hard time making a beginner series because of the thousands of hours he has already played the game. This comment is intended to help him at his request (made in this video at 28:56). It's not intended to be mean-spirited.

    • @vholes2803
      @vholes2803 4 роки тому +19

      I much appreciate and second your detailed constructive criticism. It is SO hard for people who have played hundreds or thousands of hours of Factorio (hint: I haven't) to appreciate "why?", "why now?, "how much is enough?" and similar absolutely basic questions and concepts are what I would like to see explained in a beginner-friendly video.
      Mention core concepts like pollution and initial resource patch depletion as these things come up, the need to not waste lots of time because of biters, manufacturing time being an important part of recipes, techniques like doubling up the yellow inserters unloading coal for the boilers because yellows are so slow.
      Take a moment to highlight the raw resources information for green circuits when you put the right ratio of copper/iron in the supply chest so beginners connect the dots. Just circle your cursor around the important information.
      Mention commonly used jargon that beginners will come across like green circuits, red science as these come up. "These are officially 'Electronic Circuits' but everyone calls them 'Green Circuits'." Other non-obvious jargon and concepts will include things like multi-lane balancing, using a bus, planning expansion well before it happens...

      @tejing2001 4 роки тому +24

      Excellent feedback here. I agree with most all of this in terms of helping new players. I know it's truly difficult to keep track of what isn't obvious to a new player after thousands of hours in game yourself. (For example, I use all that ctrl/shift-left/right-clicking stuff subconsciously at this point. If you ask which combinations do what I honestly can't tell you without the game and a keyboard in front of me. It's pure muscle memory)

      What's missing from the answers so far is that coal has to be "in your hand" -- which I believe Nilaus is doing by pressing 1, because he put the coal in the 1st position in the top-line shortcut bar, and the keyboard shortcuts for selecting the top-line shortcut bar items are 1-9 and 0. So first press 1 to get coal in the hand (or press E to bring up your inventory screen, and click on a stack of coal), and then hover over a miner or furnace, and press z to place one in... I've played a bit and know the basics but always lose control of my spaghetti base ending up moving stuff manually even after getting robots. I'm mainly looking for a good playthrough that shows off the concepts of advanced base building and this feels like it would get there faster than the "this is coal. Coal is used for power. Power good" style of beginner content. Anyway, if you end up changing it later, I'll just skip ahead of the trivial stuff a bit, I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed the content.

    I see you should say and repeat more times which keys and keyboard shortcuts you use. For you are obvious but are not at all intuitive.
    Also, don't open and close the windows so fast: your mouse movements are fully automated, but new players need to see what window you open, why you do so and where you click to do what you have to do.
    I have learned a lot watching you play! Keep it up!!

    HI Nilaus, very happy with some of your playlists. Of course, it´s difficult to go back to basics when you are so familiar with a game. Don´t worry too much. Still, people who start the game have to figure some things out on their own. I appreciate things like mining coal into each other unit, etc. I am sure those little things are a great help for new players. Stay effective. :D

    I started with the demo of this game today and I played the first two parts. It took about an hour because I had to find out what to, why do it, etc. I thought I would find a beginner introduction here. I didn't find it! You do a lot of things which a beginner does not understand.

  • @fluxrebro6055

    Nice👍.
    I just think that it is important for beginners that you're explaining more why you do something. An example are the machines that you put for circuit, belts etc. You built them but you didn't explain what there is going on.
    But otherwise really great content👍! Keep up👌

      Agreed. I bought Factorio years ago on Steam sale but have dipped in and out.
      Take a look at the launch video and the 2020 trailer.

      You start with almost nothing and have to "bootstrap" yourself to glory, but the path is far from clear. There are many, many ways to do the same thing, this is a sandbox game of the highest order.
      Experienced players like Nilaus have hard-wired their years of experience into "better, best" ways of doing things, and what things need to be done when. It's hard to bridge the gap and give you a good explanation with time enough to consider things.

      As an experienced Factorio player, I was never really lost... but I definitely saw moments where things were being done without explanation. Some explanations happened, and were useful... and some things were missed. Thanks for putting this feedback in. I think this is exactly the kind of thing Nilaus wants to know.

  • @JordanYerkes

    Some topics you may want to cover for beginners: resource attributes (fuel value, mining speed, how to learn more, etc.), map gui, mods, achievements, the Factorio website, the factorio community (speedrunning, SPM, megabases)

    • @nsshurtz
      @nsshurtz 4 роки тому +1

      I think the community related things should be in a separate sort of guide. Not part of a gameplay guide. You can play the game perfectly well without knowing about what SPM is. Also, things like ratios/stats can get really complicated really fast for a beginner (even experienced players aren't perfect with them either) you can play just fine without knowing them as well. Not making enough of something? Add more stuff to make more of it? Making too much of something, either don't worry about it because it will likely eventually be consumed by something or take out some of the buildings doing that.

    I just bought Factorio after finishing Dyson Sphere Program twice... so even though it did kinda feel like you were going a bit too fast, I was not totally lost. The basic mechanics of the same seem to be the same as DSP from what I'm seeing.
    Would you make a starter HUB like DSP as well here in next episodes? Where all the buildings and machines are automated without having to manually pick up and deposit iron/copper and stuff?

    Speaking from a player that has. off and on for the past 4-5 years,put in about 350 hours put into this game. (It's unfortunate and intimidating that I feel like I need to preface my comment like this, it's a bit of waving around, but it also keeps engineers honest about their personal experience). Early on I was really impressed by the conciseness of you're explanations while still covering a lot of important ground. Side note; how many of here have felt video tutorials generally waste your time? You left just enough room to the imagination, that if your video was taken in little chunks and messed around with the controls in game, brand new players who are curious can have their own "ahah!" moments. Which honestly might not even isn't the best way to go through this particular series, but it was a really cool element to notice. But early on you lost the stamina to explain things starting at the basic level. Honestly at the end of the video I felt this was less of a tutorial on how new players should approach this beautiful game that keeps sucking me in every 6 months or so, but how you specifically play the game.
    I mean all this with the very best intentions, I love the fact that comments are being read before the next video is out, what dedication. I wish for you to guide me from the ground up and help me build rockets even though I've cracked oil only twice.
