I am so glad you are finding this guide useful! This game has become a real treat and just gets better as you go, but it is a lot to take in at first for sure ;D I hope you are having fun with Factorio!
@@DrIncompetent thanks. yea, i'm sure it will. but i'm a little dense. will take awhile to get it figured out, but it's potential seems awesome. anyway, like the way you are explaining things. hopefully, it will prove a good way for me to crack this walnut (Lol)
very agreeable, im new to factorio, kinda just playing it when i get high as i love the style of the game and its peaceful and relaxing, most facotorio yt videos i see are fast paced and are kinda expecting you to know the game already. your videos are well explained and well paced :))
Haha, thank you :) this series will be just the very basics, as I still have so much to learn, but I figure I can take all the knowledge I got from the awesome viewers like yourself to create a resource for new players. It's so fun helping others get into a game like this as it's so fun but a bit steep on the learning curve.
Another hint for new players: boulders like the one on the coal deposit often contain coal and aren't too hard to mine. It might take twice as long for a dozen units of coal. These rocks alone are the reason why many veteran players prefer low-humidity maps: they usually spawn in desert areas. OTOH, _high_ humidity is well suited for new players: more wood, more pollution filtering and therefore less biter issues.
Just downloaded it last night. I didn't even sleep I'm on steam powered electricity right now and trying to build a car, and your guide really helped me a lot thank you so much for this.
Seriously. This is the best video I've come across for beginners. In some other videos they talk and do mouse click so fast I cannot understand what they are doing. You go at a pace that we beginners can follow and understand and you go in enough detail explaining why and how they work that way. I am very grateful to you for the videos you created. Many thanks!
I am so glad you find this helpful! Haha, I am with you myself in that many guides move quickly because the general audience wants a fast pace, but it doesn't make for the best learning for myself. I try to go slow and explain as I go because this game is amazing but so much is going on haha. I hope you are having fun with the game!
I appreciate your slow pace. At 35 minutes in the video, other "guide" players had done that much in 60 seconds and I just can't keep up with what seemed like a fun game, but overwhelming. Inspiration to maybe try it again, thanks!!
Oh great! I am so glad you are okay with my slower approach ^_^ Yeah, I find that as an instructor, it's better to move slowly so everyone can process the information as well as see it happen in real time--the breakneck speed videos may be more entertaining, but, at least for me, I just don't learn that much from them haha
Thank you for making an actual beginners guide. A lot of others don't even touch half of this stuff and start saying you need 16x of these and 4x of that, optimal blah blah blah.
You sir, deserve a 10/10 on this instructional video. I am just starting and know nothing and now I have a good base of knowledge to build on. Very clear and understanding.
Props for the approach you put into this. Too many tutorials just tell you to copy their patterns. It's a lot more useful to know why those patterns work, and the thought process behind it. I enjoy just guessing and adjusting as I go, rather than doing perfect numbers and ratios (though ratios are an important concept, I don't stick to them perfectly at all. I find 1/s science output for example to be excessive).
Haha, I am so glad you have found this to be helpful! I am a very poor Factorio player through the prism of perfection, but I play more like you--just winging it and having fun haha ;D I know it's not perfect, but I have a great time with the game :) Others enjoy the numerical side and that's great--to each their own!
I will say; although I party agree with you when it comes to the tutorial, I think every (new) player SHOULD try it. Not only does it teach you how to play the game, it also showcases prebuilt examples of factories (speaking of the last tutorial). It helped me a lot with understanding and even expanding upon said example. In school they teach you by telling, then letting you execute (which doesn't work), in factorio they let you do it (just like your own father would), and then explain it to you, which does work!
this is the best tutorial, seriously. i recently purchased the game, space age looked great so i was like im in... after 5 mins i was ready to be out, after watching this im very very in again. thanks.
What a wonderful introduction! You got into pretty advanced stuff by the end! All the other "beginner" videos I watched got me nowhere, but after about 20 mins of this episode, I got enough basics to get started, so I paused and played a bit, and came back for some more learning :)
Doc I have to thank you for this guide. This game felt complicated coming into it blind but this guide made the basics simple to understand and build off of. I'm at 10 hrs now and hooked. Automate Everything.
thank you for this series, it has taught me to take my time in this game and enjoy it at my own pace and scale unlike other great youtubers that try to teach min maxing rioghtt off the bat haha
Oh awesome! I am so glad you are finding this series to be helpful :D Haha, yeah, I go slow and don't stress about perfect numbers and love this game. You can play it however you like, which infuriates some but I like my spaghetti haha
I had watched LPs of this game off and on over the years and finally picked this game up over the weekend. Have a few hours of gameplay. Glad i found this playthrough because its hard to remember old information and a lot of that isn't relevant anymore due to game updates.
Good explanation of the basic concepts. I still think having the burner ore miners output directly into furnaces instead of boxes is more efficient. By the time you get to automating smelting lines with belts and inserters your first furnaces will be moved anyway. Also I tip about coal miners that I have found very useful beginning game is to arrange them in a circle so that the output of each one feeds into the one beside it. That way they power each other up and keep mining till they reach 50 capacity and you can ctrl click on them to remove the coal and they will start up again. You can make the daisy chain as big as you want, I find 8 to 10 sufficient to get thru the burner phase of the game.
This video was awesome. I've bounced off this game for years because I couldn't get passed the tutorial in-game. They should include this video in the game somewhere and remove their own tutorial. You definitely deserve a sub for this one! Much appreciated.
yoooo just got my self the "factorio space age " DLC and its my first time to play its a game that i would loveee to get into but didn't get to understand how things worked and man oh man can i say for a fact i am going to watch all of your videos to know how things work lol thank so much man all love and respect goes to you
thankyou so much my man. for someone as slow as I am, I had no idea how to get started. the tutorial in this game is like a screen filter for idiots. Thanks for bringing this to my life. I've owned this game for three years and for the first time I'm finally getting somewhere. What a guy!
Cool! Worth mentioning that more active quickbars can be displayed by going to Settings->Interface and setting the 'Active quickbars' option. I like to have 4 displayed bars so I don't have to scroll through them, but it does take a little more space.
Iron is THE most important resource, it is abundant ultra strong and reliable, easy to work with and improve, so far I love this guide even though I'm not sure how much of it im using I'm already making huge iron plate lines but I am doing a lot by hand, so thanks
In theory you could use burner inserters to feed your burner mining drills as they feed themselves as well, that way you don't need to run power and they would be more than fast enough to feed the burner mining drills
Generally I build minimalist, initially hand running & hand mining materials, eventually adding with spaghetti and then I reorganize and automate as I go along....
Haha, I for some reason dislike mining by hand and try to get out as fast as possible. I'm trying to get to the point where I sit in a lawn chair and watch the factory run on its own haha
Haha, yeah this game has a lot to unpack, but it's better imo to understand the fundamentals so you can iterate on it as you like. I am so glad you are enjoying this series! I hope you are having fun with Factorio :D
I would advise that you change "research queue availability" in advanced options to "Always." I consider it QOL and you can't turn it on after you generate the world.
I agree, in a game where doing things timely is key, having a que for something like research even with beginners helps tremendously with moving things along.
@@TheREALDocRabbitEspecially for beginners, a research queue can be quite devastatingly bad. What happens is that they queue up stuff, which then gets researched and unlocks new buildings and recipes. But they are still busy building whatever they got before, so when they are done, they suddenly have a dozen new production lines they could build and are overwhelmed and miss half of it. It's not so bad in the base game, but I've seen this happen in modded games too often. And and with "seen" I mean watching experienced streamers/youtubers who try out a modpack for the first time. It's much better to unlock a thing, build it and then go to the next one.
This is the best video i've seen for beginners like me! i've had this game in my library for years but have always been put off playing it as it looks very difficult but after watching this video im going to give it a shot :)
You skipped over burner Inserters which are great for coal fueled buildings because not only do they feed coal into the destination, but they feed coal into themselves as well, so if you set one up to put coal into the burner miner from the conveyor/box, it will keep itself and the miner running so long as there is coal to be mined.
thank you so much for this video, I was looking for a true beginners guide and you think how I feel many beginners would, they want to watch a video and play alongside listening/watching it. very easy to understand and informative
Oh great! I am so glad you found this helpful :) Yes--as a beginner in this game, I was overwhelmed and just seeing tips didn't help me retain the knowledge I needed to make progress haha. I hope you are having fun with the game!
4:20 (insert _blaze it_ here): Be sure to point the end with the flames at the ground. If it ends up pointing up, you won't go to space today -- or maybe at all.
I like using burner inserters to initially automate my iron/copper production, bc the burner inserter will fuel itself. This cuts down on how much wiring i need to run at the cost of a small pittance of coal that would mostly end up going into a boiler anyway. That way you dont have to do things by hand while you wait on electricity and you dont need to bother with wiring your refinment lines until you upgrade to steel.
how have i gone from not seeing any of ur vids, to enjoying your dwarf fortress/CDDA/Terraria/and now factorio just this week, how has youtube not recommended you to me before rofl! Also would be cool to see you play La-Mulana! :3
Haha, this game is great! Overwhelming a bit at first, but there's no rush so go at your own pace. I just tear down everything when I understand more and you don't lose any materials, so you are free to experiment!
Oh no he doesn’t know the coal mining trick. Alright this trick is pretty good at automating coal. Basically in the early game burner drills take coal, technically this means the entity has a chest that holds coal. Because of this you can control click and get the contents out of the drill. Which means you can have a block of drills with the outputs flowing into each other in an unbroken line. Effectively making your only interactions being 1 coal and anything you take out of later. No need to keep putting coal into the drill.
@@DrIncompetent yep :) there’s also the undergroundy trick where you can force a split input belt with an underground belt. Basically the wall for the underground belt takes up one half of the belt and blocks that side of a regular belt if you place it perpendicularly.
if you dont know, during the very early game you can have your miners go straight into furnaces instead of putting them into containers then running and getting the materials and then putting them into the furnaces. Either way though you will be running to go get something as you would need to fuel the furnace still.
@@DrIncompetent understandable i just noticed you wernt sending iron straight into furnaces from the miners and just wanted to mention that just incase
Started playing the Switch version, and I can already tell I'm gonna need to play with KBM. Luckily, I read that the Switch supports it. Good thing because those shortcuts are going to be a godsend.
Haha, it's a habit from my teaching and I can't seem to shake it ;D I am so glad you enjoyed this and found it helpful. I hope you have fun with Factorio!
You can make 2 coal miners face eachother and output their production to feed eachother and fill their fuel inventory, and ctrl click them to loot their fuel inventory.
I'm new to this game and I'm still learning how to not make spaghetti style conveyor belts that end up clogging because I can't stop producing stuff, making it so I can't put more than two items on a single belt.
Hi i am searching this everywhere but could not find it !! Q : Is there any way to quickly build the entire ghost structures like in Mindustry if you have the resources placing the structures it will build everything automatically . Do i have to build every bit individually ? Q2: how to mass delete big area of structures also like in minddustry you can select an area and deconstruct everything of that place ? is there any hotkey or do i have to delete everything manually with right click ?
Either way is fine! I found the tutorials great at some stuff but lacking in other areas, so the guide is meant to play along-side your game or before if you like! I hope you have fun with the game and find this helpful ^_^
Hey Teach... Mrs Fabrik (the Money Boss lol) says I can buy one fairly pricy game so I'm here because I've decided between Factorio or Wartales... and your vid showed up at the top when I looked Factorio up! What do you think? I think I'll love both. I'm so confused. Do I want to build and murder bugs, or do I want to roam the lands with my wily band of mercenaries buddies murdering bandits and the like? Trains vs pet bears. I'm so confused! What a great problem to have! Hope you're having a great friday.
Haha, wow those are two great options! It is a good problem to have for sure! I think you are set either way, honestly. Factorio has insane value per hour played as it is a time sink as you build your factory. But if that isn't your jam, Wartales is good for RPG progression... decisions decisions! ;D
I don't know the other one, but I can speak about Factorio. Factorio is one of those games that will stay with you for years. It certainly is not one of the "20-hour playthrough and never touch again" ones, not even if you up the 20 to 100. Just like a box of generic non-trademark-infringing locking bricks, there's always something new to build. And once you've mastered the base game to a point where you have a base that can start a rocket every second, there are thousands of mods (in the ingame mod-menu!) that add new challenges.
ty! it's clearly a good and beloved game, but i tried it's in-game tutorial missions and.... factorio does not have a good tutorial. at all. hopefully this will give me the jump start i need to see the glory of the game!
I hope you can get into it and enjoy Factorio! The tutorials confused me as well haha. I had to be helped by many kind souls and am still learning--this game is complex but also strangely beautiful haha
MY GOD IS THIS GAME SO F ADDICTIVE i mean nahhhhh forget about Cocaine and Alcohol this is the real deal its only has been 4 days of me getting the dang thing and my did my factory grow fall and get even better each time nahhhhhhhh now i get the guys who got 5000 hours on steam and why they say don't play this game if you value your life its the real deal
@DrIncompetent just wanted to see if there was like a good reason not to do it. Factorio is one of those games ive had for years and always got frustrated with. Im on ur ep 2 so i can give this a good go at it
Another trick you can do is to put items in a wooden box and then destroy the box. It also gets rid of everything in the box. Unfortunately, vanilla does not have a way to break down items. If you use mods, there might be something. Not sure because that is not something I searched out.
@@DrIncompetent that's good to know. Question only thing I'm confused about I tried to get electric furnace early but I think I've been told that more a later game thing?
why the f does nobody else scream about the q key right at the beginning!? i watched the rest just because you told me that, even though I kinda knew the rest.
You had me till peaceful mode :( I get it, it's a tutorial, but the biters are a HUGE part of the game and learning to deal with them WHILE setting up is half the fun imo! With no aggression it's too sandboxy for my tastes

It's not so bad in the base game, but I've seen this happen in modded games too often. And and with "seen" I mean watching experienced streamers/youtubers who try out a modpack for the first time.
It's much better to unlock a thing, build it and then go to the next one.
this is a awesome job man thanks for taken time to explain it well!!! 10/10.
Oh great! I am so glad you have found it to be helpful :D I hope you are enjoying the game!
Thank you very much this was the best beginner factorio tutorial . Really appreciate the work
Oh awesome! So glad you are finding the series to be helpful :) I hope you enjoy the game!
@@DrIncompetent I am enjoying it thank you
You have already changed my life with control-left click.
Haha, it's a game changer!
This is the best video i've seen for beginners like me! i've had this game in my library for years but have always been put off playing it as it looks very difficult but after watching this video im going to give it a shot :)
I am so glad you are finding this series to be helpful! Factorio is such a great game but has a ton going on haha
@@DrIncompetent yea it is very in depth but im really enjoying it so far, its just that im not very clever and not that good at the game haha.
You skipped over burner Inserters which are great for coal fueled buildings because not only do they feed coal into the destination, but they feed coal into themselves as well, so if you set one up to put coal into the burner miner from the conveyor/box, it will keep itself and the miner running so long as there is coal to be mined.
Good point! Haha, I just move past em;)
thank you so much for this video, I was looking for a true beginners guide and you think how I feel many beginners would, they want to watch a video and play alongside listening/watching it. very easy to understand and informative
Oh great! I am so glad you found this helpful :) Yes--as a beginner in this game, I was overwhelmed and just seeing tips didn't help me retain the knowledge I needed to make progress haha. I hope you are having fun with the game!
I already know some of the basics of the game, but Imma do an entire savegame just following this series to learn it
Haha, awesome! So glad you are finding this helpful :)
Great tutorial, first video for beginners that I've understood!
Awesome! I am so glad you have found this to be helpful :D I hope you are enjoying Factorio!
Going to set my alarm for 2 am so none of the family are about so I can try to understand this? this is my sort of game thanks for the vid!
Haha, awesome! This game is fantastic--I hope you find this helpful and have fun with Factorio :)
@@DrIncompetent I'm not young, I hope this will keep my brain active !
Nice, I’ve only tested the demo so far, but definitively a game I’ve wishlisted, the scale is impressive
The scale is infinite! It's so great haha
The most important tip you might add is make sure to put research queue to always.
Very good tip!
The name is Dr Incompetent. But unlike his name, he is very competent in making me hooked on to this series. Bloody good job .........
Haha, I am so glad you are enjoying this and finding it useful! This game is so great once you get into it ^_^ Have fun with Factorio!
genuinely the press Q to clear your hand tip was worth a sub alone! It was so annoying
Haha, that was killing me when I first played! haha
Everyone do yourself a favor and just turn cliffs off. They add nothing but annoyance to the game
Haha, I will do this from now on--they do get in the way ;)
4:20 (insert _blaze it_ here): Be sure to point the end with the flames at the ground. If it ends up pointing up, you won't go to space today -- or maybe at all.
Haha, sage advice ^_^
This is a phenominal video i will definitely be following this
Awesome! So glad you are finding it to be helpful!
Clearest tutorial i’ve seen on the game. Thanks
You are so welcome! I hope you are enjoying the game :D
Such a great video. Thanks for your work.
You are so welcome! I hope you are enjoying the game!
Oh cool! Thank you for sharing this tip!
Another great learning Video, Dr. Incompetent! Great job (as usual)! Happy New Year!!
Haha, awesome! Happy New Year to you!
how have i gone from not seeing any of ur vids, to enjoying your dwarf fortress/CDDA/Terraria/and now factorio just this week, how has youtube not recommended you to me before rofl! Also would be cool to see you play La-Mulana! :3
Much like Empire Earth, you’ll be able to expand your territory, develop resources, and engage in strategic battles against rivals.
Do you mean the biters? haha ;D
Can’t wait to play! Seems overwhelming though.
Thanks for sharing this!
@@DrIncompetent yep :) there’s also the undergroundy trick where you can force a split input belt with an underground belt. Basically the wall for the underground belt takes up one half of the belt and blocks that side of a regular belt if you place it perpendicularly.
27 minutes and hes placed down his first furnace miner, finnaly someone at my own pace 😂 some of these youtubers go too quickly bro
Haha, I am quite slow indeed ;D I don't like to rush and this game requires lots of brain power, so I have to take my time haha
if you dont know, during the very early game you can have your miners go straight into furnaces instead of putting them into containers then running and getting the materials and then putting them into the furnaces. Either way though you will be running to go get something as you would need to fuel the furnace still.
just got to the point in the video where you basically explain why you don't so I get why you don't do it now
Haha, great! Yeah, I think everyone might have their own take on this, but that's why I do it that way ;)
@@DrIncompetent understandable i just noticed you wernt sending iron straight into furnaces from the miners and just wanted to mention that just incase
Started playing the Switch version, and I can already tell I'm gonna need to play with KBM. Luckily, I read that the Switch supports it. Good thing because those shortcuts are going to be a godsend.
Yeah, the shortcuts are super helpful!
Mmmmmmkay! 😂 great video, and endearing “okay”s 😁
Haha, it's a habit from my teaching and I can't seem to shake it ;D I am so glad you enjoyed this and found it helpful. I hope you have fun with Factorio!
Thank you for making this series!
You are so welcome! I hope you are enjoying the game :D
Thank you for this great beginner guide.
You are so welcome! I am glad you are enjoying the series 😀
The UI in this game is genius
We got a UI proponent here! ;D
Theres a moment playing this game where it just "clicks" and you're like..."WHOA!!! I can make a machine do that instead!!!"
Haha, yes! Such a great moment :D
You can make 2 coal miners face eachother and output their production to feed eachother and fill their fuel inventory, and ctrl click them to loot their fuel inventory.
Thanks for sharing this tip!
I'm new to this game and I'm still learning how to not make spaghetti style conveyor belts that end up clogging because I can't stop producing stuff, making it so I can't put more than two items on a single belt.
Spaghetti is a way of life! I love it haha
Yes! You can make blueprints and you can mass remove, but to do this you need advanced technology--drones! They come later haha
dig it
It's such a fun game! I hope you are having a good time with it!
I’m new to the game. Should I watch this before messing around? I did all the tutorials except the last one
Brilliant, thank yoi.
You are so welcome! I hope you are enjoying the game :D
Can I watch this if I’m playing it on the switch? Will all of the information still make sense?
Everything except the key bindings should be good!
Thank you for this
You are so welcome! I hope you enjoy the game :)
Nice Man
Haha, thanks my friend! I hope you are enjoying the game!
You are incompetently incompetent! After watching, fall in love with this game, and started playing this game with full competent.
Haha, awesome! Yeah, this game is so fun once it clicks :D
MY GOD IS THIS GAME SO F ADDICTIVE i mean nahhhhh forget about Cocaine and Alcohol this is the real deal its only has been 4 days of me getting the dang thing and my did my factory grow fall and get even better each time
nahhhhhhhh now i get the guys who got 5000 hours on steam and why they say don't play this game if you value your life its the real deal
Haha, yes! It can get its hooks into you for sure ;D
Just curious why do so many boxes instead of 4x1 config? like one box and 4 drills inserting into one box?
I'm just doing that to demonstrate! You can do whatever you like! ;D
@DrIncompetent just wanted to see if there was like a good reason not to do it. Factorio is one of those games ive had for years and always got frustrated with. Im on ur ep 2 so i can give this a good go at it
Honestly, you should have switched research queue to be available right away
Sure! But for beginners--people who have never played--I try to explain things slowly, one step at a time ^_^
Got a question. I accidentally crafted 150 offshore pumps. How do I delete them?
Good question! You can put them in your trash icons in the inventory or just drop them on the ground!
@@DrIncompetent Trash can = recycled?
Another trick you can do is to put items in a wooden box and then destroy the box. It also gets rid of everything in the box.
Unfortunately, vanilla does not have a way to break down items. If you use mods, there might be something. Not sure because that is not something I searched out.
Nice guide, you need a microphone upgrade though
Thank you for watching! So glad you found it helpful!
@@DrIncompetent Yeah, there's so much in this game, I'm watching your videos gradually as I play to learn as much as I can.
is this still a good guide to follow? as a new player I did find the tutorial hard to follow
Yup! This is still valid!
Haha, I know! When I first started it was driving me crazy. Had to get that out of the way immediately haha
Why peaceful? I also want to learn how to deal with enemies
Far out man! Thanks for watching!
👍
I hope you are having fun with Factorio ^_^
You had me till peaceful mode :( I get it, it's a tutorial, but the biters are a HUGE part of the game and learning to deal with them WHILE setting up is half the fun imo! With no aggression it's too sandboxy for my tastes
Fair enough!
ok
Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching!
Why don't you feed coal miners into eachother?
You sure can if you like!
Mmkay 😂
Thanks for watching!
