- The 790 Adventure is the latest Adventure bike to hit the scene but what's different about this machine is real adventure ability but in a much more useable sized package.
Here's my full review of this impressive machine!

So I bought the S rather than the R after doing some research. Key points: the R is not stable at high speed 70mph+ compared to the S (high mudguard maybe?). The S is as capable off-road for most riders: only those looking for extreme capability would benefit from the R. I have had 3 GSAs and I love the one I still have, but at 68 years of age I'm now struggling to pick it up (repeatedly) and it has become a confidence issue. KTM 790 Adventure, no bother (so far)!
Another great review Chops. Informative and entertaining as always.
Another great upload and review, the best channel on UA-cam just gets better
Very kind of you sir :-)
Wow lovely review, I’m really excited about mine. I just got it. I can’t wait to start riding it 😊
Good review chops 👌 I like the bike and looks. Thanks Danny 😊
Another good vid chops as always well done boy keep it up.
I just sold my 1190 Advrnture R and was in the market for a middleweight. I test rode the 850 GS and the 790 Adventure back to back. Both great bikes, but spot on with this report, the 790 is fantastic. The engine pulls amazingly and it feels so light, especially in comparison with the 850.
One correction I would say is that there are some cracking deals to be had, I bought one and got a cracking price and in comparison to the 850 thousands less.
Another good point is there is now quite a long list of extras available, which are on my xmas wish list. A real winner and pretty much agree with everything said.
Great vid as usual LCR nice everyday usable machine by the looks of it, I have to laugh tho, "Tiny engine only 800cc" 20 years ago if you had a 750cc you were the feckin man lol
Yeah, tiny 800cc engine that makes 95hp! I love it!
Dang! LC gets to have all the fun.
I dig it. The duke 790 will most likely be my next bike.
Nice one choppsy, love the all bags!!!, I like the look of this bike worth a look
I've taken my 390 Duke up steeper muddy slopes and exposed rocks than you've taken this Adv. Honestly, the 790S is designed for way rougher and technical terrain than you mention.
There's no need to buy the R or Rally models unless you want to ride really hard.
Great Review! Thank you
Great review Mr Chops, the most pertinent yet to me, as I want a bike for touring holidays that can handle the odd gravelly track in the hills, not elephantine, and still be fun to ride. I've been riding a KTM 1090 Adventure for the last couple of years, and it's a great bike, but it would be nice if it was an inch lower and a few kilos lighter. So next year when it's time to change I'll try this and the Tenere, maybe also the Guzzi TT850. The 850 GS just seems too heavy, the same weight as my 1090 KTM but a lot less power.
Actually I couldn't wait until next year, picked up my 790 a couple of weeks ago. Got a great deal on a new one at £9500. And at 5'7" it's the perfect size for me.
great review that bike sounds ken awesome
How would you compare it to the GS850 Adventure?
Another great review..Thx chops. It would take some getting used to...uhm the fuel testicles...lol. for me I'd buy the triumph tiger 800. Currently own the 1215 explorer and luv it. I'm definitely a fan of the triumph triple. Peace brother
I like how ugly it is. At first I threw up a little in my mouth. But it's so ugly, and so uniquely ugly, it's now grown on me. I'm thinking on trading my 690 in for the R model.
It's definitely ugly.
I love this bike. Been doing 120 to 150 miles a day since I bought it a week ago. Plenty of power on the steep hills in Kona. Good stability on the twisties and comfortably takes the bumps on the many crappy roads. The dirt and rocky road out to the beach is effortless. This is the only bike that the big island would ever need. One bike to rule them all. Form follows function so in a week I have gone from being skeptical of it’s looks and sound to loving both.
UGLY!!! I went to the KTM dealer and it is incredible. I hope to buy one in a couple of month's. My only problem, which one, S or R. Leaning towards R.
@@jayschmahl9206 Yeah I hear you. I lean toward R but if I am being HONEST with myself the S would cover everything I do now, and ever would do. Thought I like to pretend I'm a hardcore offroader.
Not From Concentrate it’s not ugly it’s clever, form over function & all the better for it
I actually find it quite pretty. Add higher seat if you're above 6 feet, if you want the optics and don't ride too much on highways, get the R fender kit and decent crash bars, and you're good.
Great review and someone finally took it offroad. I ride mine on/offroad just fine. Couple of things: phone integration came as standard with mine, also I get over 60mpg onroad. You are right it should be cheaper👍
Go watch mototreks review
Navillus2273 Yes, saw that. Very very good!
@@Navillus2273 Ya, right. I wonder how much BMW paid him to ride into the ground. Should have been fixed when he first noticed the rotors.
Got one coming next week 😎😎
Apprehensious! Love it.
great review!
Would an insurance claim be affected if you had an accident whilst the abs was deactivated? Or is the insurance premium on bikes with switchable abs more expensive to account for the fact that you might turn it off?
Love the fuel tank analogy!! Too funny
I do wonder who sets up your Ktm's that you borrow LCR, on my 790 duke for the lsat 12 months I've had no hot running issues, no false neutrals, no problems at all with the quickshifter or cutting out..... :s
Id get the T7 just because the bang for the buck is too good
Im American and when I saw him in the left lane i was just terrified... until i saw that van pass by then remembered you guys ride on the left side of the road.
V good review - I’m sold
Just off-road tires and 15t sprocket an my 790 Adv S became a proper off-road machine.
I love the idea of this and the R version... but seeing the dash in your close up of it beginning to show the signs of condensation under the glass that the 390 also suffers with, I can't understand why KTM have not addressed this, especially seeing as it is a bike that is nearly 3 times the price of the 390.Unless KTM fix this I can really imagine it will dent their sales sadly.
It's a beauty Chops!
Light advs make way more sense so I'm very glad KTM is taking that direction. It is proper ugly though so let's hope they sort that one out too
Dylzhaar soo much ugly plastic crap all over it!
@@henrikforsberg683 like what?
Looking forward to test riding the 890 Adventure
Was impressed with the 790
£4Grand of a difference new in 2022, old stock 'S' to new 890 'R' models...between a pipe and Rottweiler performance intakes, more power out of the 790...and £3Grand in the bank...most of the old stock about gone now...worth a phone around!
Nice to see someone actually taking an ' off road bike' off road while doing a review. A lot of reviewers just say " better not take it off road, as it's not my bike "
Yes has to be done IMO.. Its what its for :-)
Well would you risk wrecking a bike that has been lent to you? That is not good
@@everythinggaming7938 Yes, I get that. However, it's the sort of risk the manufacturers should be willing to take, as their bike is getting some decent publicity.
@@Jaffa1951 well its dealerships that lend you the bike not manufacturers
@@everythinggaming7938 Yes, I know that - in most cases, anyway - ( TMF, and others, get quite a few of their long term test bikes straight from the manufacturer ) I just feel that when an adventure/offroad bike is lent out to a motovlogger the manufacturers should be prepared to cover the risk of the bike getting a bit bent while being ridden down the lanes. After all, quite a few of the motovloggers give the bike a bit of a caning on the roads, and there's, probably, a higher risk of seriously damaging the bike then, don't you think. Both the dealership and the manufactuer benefit from more sales. Just my opinion, anyway.
Would you rather have this or the GS750 Sport?
It’s function over form which I really like
Good review....good to see it ridden off road!. Is that an Ultimate addons phone case your using...,? Steve
Thanks Stephen, and yes Ultimate Addons mount its very good!!
Great review again Chops thanks, its a nice bike but I feel that the BMW f850 GS is a better bike plus the build quality seems better. Will be good to see your review on the R and make a decision then but if you add on all the extras to the KTM price would be similar, the residual value of the GS will also be better.
Finally an adventure for the little people, (woo-hoo 😂).
Good review Chops 👍👍👍.
Thanks Chris :-)
for confident/competent little people
I recently picked up an 890 Adventure, it is a real confidence booster after a Pan Am and a 1290 SA-R.
My only concern is that I'm running out of gas at around 160m miles. I mean push the bike and go get gas kinda running out of gas. I'm gonna have to take it in and see if the tank is set up correctly.
Thanks for the review.. At highway speeds is the front tire stable? I have a R1200GSA and I was thinking of getting the KTM 790.. I would like to have the R model but im 5'5" and I believe it would be taller than my GSA, which is at my max comfort level for seat height. Thanks
watch Brett Tkacs' review to answer your question
What you like better - F850GS/GSA or 790 Adventure -- for both on and off road? Which is your winner if you were doing 50%-50% for a 20,000 km ride?
Is cruise control an option on this bike?
KTM's started working the SMT version of this engine. My money's waiting for that.
wait really????
@@JinKazama92 Yup, you can google the spy shots.
Covid killed that plan...
Thanks for this nice review
but I have a question:
Can this bike travel for long trips between countries?
Because I plan this before buying.
Why not? Who says it takes only the GS 1200 to travel long distances? Check this channel and see for yourself...ua-cam.com/video/DsO1L5VujfA/v-deo.html
Very nice review as usual sir chops. Front looks a little odd maybe but I'm sure it'll grow on you & it's obviously a decent bike regardless. I'm looking more and more at smaller bikes from all classes these days. I think it may be the way to go as you can have so much more fun rinsing a smaller bike as opposed to tickling a big one. If it was properly spec'd in terms of light weight, decent brakes & suspension with a characterful 45ish bhp engine, a 250 or 400 would be ample & I'd be first in line.
Think I prefer the reliability and looks of the Yamaha 700 Ténéré and it is nearly £3k cheaper. I love the 790 duke though. Great review as always.
Stephen Byford yeah can’t wait to try a Ténéré 700
The 790 isn't long out, how could you know the Yamaha is more reliable?
Can this bike hang with a BMW GS 1250?
Where's there a KTM dealer local to Winchester/Alton/Midhurst then? I know that A272 roundabout under the A3😝
This 790 is much better off road then it's bigger heavier brother and the GS..by far!
Yes,and the ktm is far far worse on the road! They may look the same but they are different bikes!
KTM's habit of charging extra to unlock stuff that's already installed on the bike is a large part of why I bought an S1000R instead. I got my 2017 fully loaded (QS, forged wheels, dynamic suspension) for 4k CAD less than the Super Duke R (and that's even before I paid $300 to unlock the extra modes). It's true that the S1KR is missing a bit of character compared of a big v-twin but not 4 grand less.
KTM, if you're going to put the hardware on the machine regardless, don't charge us extra for the getting to use it.
Nice bike. Wonder what it’s like going on “an adventure” with pillion and luggage though🤔 Would the bike have enough power to handle the extra weight up and down mountain passes or orbiting the M25 rush hour traffic? You’ll have to make another Spanish Pyrenees touring video fully loaded with a “Womble” as pillion😝
Everyone is saying the bmw 850 gsa is too heavy, but the chassis and everything is reinforced to accommodate luggage and passenger, this bike has been made to be the lightest off all,but it will bit a lot people in the ass when they start loading them to go round the world and break in half 300 miles later!
do you think the looks would improve with a low windscreen?
yes and and the R model's seat.
Umm...No mention that the seat has two height settings dependant on simply which notches you slot the front onto on the tank. That channel above the front of the seat shows you had it on its lowest. Being your height, with your long legs, you will have found it marginally better perhaps on the higher placement. Glad to see you took the bugger off-road.
OK nice didnt realize that thanks for pointing that out
Did you test the 790 adventurer R? I looked in your channel but couldn’t find it.
Yes I have one but got a puncture 5 mins into the ride ☹
Lamb Chop Rides thanks I just found it. Which one would you pick for off-road mainly sand dunes 70% vs 690?
@@Eastern_SA Weight is a killer in sand. I'd take the 690. The 790 adv, even though it's fantastic offroad, would be harder work than lighter bikes.
Must request Oxford Dictionary to include the new words that you create as you go along!😀😀
haha sorry :-)
Will you be testing the new Yamaha Tenere 700?
So it has a 21" front wheel?
brad turner not sure
Please test ride the steed seen at 0:12 and do a comparo with the 790
Definitely gonna be a big hit in India if priced right. Great review!
Amruthesh C £11000 (R is 12k+) in the uk. Is there a big market in India for this price of bike?
No it will not do well in India.Unless its a ktm, bajaj or RE all other bikes are overpriced according to my fellow Indians.
@@alrightdave6135 Fast forward to 2022...old stock(now the 890 is out) going for £8495...where they should have been at to start with...not great sellers compared to the 'R' which sold out in the USA
Yeah, the R version looks allot more normal with the high front fender. The standard version looks pretty goofy up front.
So it has petricles?
haha yes :-)
Where did you get your tactical style vest?
Link in the description sir :-)
Thank you
Good review, I still prefer my Tiger 800.
Heavier and a bit shorter seat height so better for 5’ 6-9”blokes
Great bike, it has the incredible technology of auto chain lube mechanism. .....
Omg, I cannot help but think about ball bags every time I run into a 790 Adventure now... LoL
I reckon ball bags are the future Husqvana have them on 710. Ball bags are on there way!
What abou the Tenere 700?
it'll be out in 2025
What about it?this is a review for the 790.......
gonna get this one for 7k second had for a guy who only did 20k kilometers in it. older guy that used it in france. first A category bike for me
Mr chops m8 if you've only got a 29" inseam it's still too tall ,that's why I got the 790 duke instead . You said 40 mpg wtf that's terrible compared to the 790 duke even if your nailing the duke it's not that bad . The motors are great and in the adv cloths I'm sure ktm have a winner to worry the opposition imho . The shifter/ blipper are extras on the adv which makes the price a bit higher than some of the competition and I agree it's way much more than the duke at 7800 quid .
I’ve a 27.7” inseam and can ride it no problem. And seeing 69 mpg.
Lightweight adventure bikes are the future! 😃✌
DODGEM SQUAD 200+kg?
@@alrightdave6135 compared to the bigger 1100+cc
I never understood why anyone would want to ride a 240kg behemoth off road, this is just what the market needs.
Everyone is saying the bmw 850 gsa is too heavy, but the chassis and everything is reinforced to accommodate luggage and passenger, this bike has been made to be the lightest off all,but it will bit a lot people in the ass when they start loading them to go round the world and the bike breaks in half.
It can carry more load than a GS1250
i'm sure the seat is 850mm how is that low ?
I'm 5'8, how tall are you?
hardly a bike for the vertically challenged with its 830/850mm seat. It's for more touring style riders who like "off-road" whenever it comes into the equation. The low weight distribution, its fuel down low, helps in off-bitumen excursions. Great seat heights for normal height guys. Anyone around 5'8" (173cms) or shorter will still only have one leg on the ground when stopped. 180/183cms (in boots) is perfect both feet down for total confidence on surfaces such as gravel. The great thing is even the S version has 233mm ground clearance, around 240mm with more off road biased tread which equals the Tenere 700. The seat, the tyre tread, bigger screen all contribute to making it the better of the two versions on road
Looks like a substantial bit of kit, and surely more practical than it's older siblings.
It's looking like manufacturers are adhering to the fact that the middle weight adventure bikes are actually more usable in reality, also taking into account the price of these things they make more sense financially.
The 1260 Ducati Multistrada, 1250 BMW GS Adventure, 1290 KTM Super Adventure are all really a thing of luxury!
790 or 1090? Which is best? 🤷🏻♂️
All u need is the £8 app and the my ride works
This or the v-strom 650 for mostly on-road touring?
The V-strom is WAY less money and you get what you pay for. This bike will DESTROY a Vstrom offroad and keep up or beat it on-road.
How tight is your budget?
@@richardscott982 Thanks for the responses. My budget is not too tight. Was planning on getting a bike in January but I could easily put up the additional $3-4k for the KTM if I wait a couple months longer. Definitely leaning towards the KTM right now.
so many that buy the R model could have bought the S model and it would have been enough! People assume this is a road bike but its more capable than the Tenere 700 for example. just switch tires for knobblies and you are good to go right where the R model goes. 99% of the riders wont make a difference! :D
I wish you would have mentioned wind protection, vibration, and mirrors.
All good!!
@@LambChopRides Is the windscreen adjustable?
If ur thinking that toro adventure's Gs's are big, maybe u should go ask the Baron if u can have a go on his GSA 😅😅
haha yes very true!!
How will the tanks do in a crash mate?
Not sure Rob didn't test them but sure KTM have 😁
If memory serves, that was a major concern in the development of the bike, but they weren't really able to puncture/break the tank. Obviously, you crash hard enough, anything will break.
Let’s see it in the green lanes
The connection feature is included and not another couple hundred pounds. Navigation costs another 8 or 9 pounds for the app.
Quickshifter is not included though
And there are side panniers available as ktm powerparts
Derp quickshifter not included? Really?
Nope its an extra, as I was told was the KTM My Ride...
@@alrightdave6135 it might be during autumn and winter sales. it is actually always included but you have to pay ~300€ to unlock it software side
@@LambChopRides yeah the app costs extra (which is called ktm my ride navigation) but the whole bt connection stuff with music and calls etc is included. you can connect your sena headset and your phone both to the bike and let the bike do its thing =)
8.45 Apprehentious?
😂😂😂 I was about to comment the exact same thing
Looks like a great bike. But as far as cornering the market goes, BMW and Triumph make a middleweight adventure bike, right?
Yes but not with low seats thats the point
@@LambChopRides Ah yes, I see.
Ah Mr chops is one getting old a civilized I didn't see any wheelies W.T.F.????🤔I will assume they where edited out I suppose KTM would think you were abusing there bike if you left them in 😂😂😂😂😂🤔🤔onece again great vid
haha, tbh its very hard to wheelie!! Should have added that as a concern :-)
So they're taking the adventure out of the adventure bike 😂
Aaron Lovett ‘their’ bike 👍
I have the Adventure, you have to turn off the anti wheelie mode ( Mtc).
Anti wheelie is active in both street and rain modes....switch it to off road if you want to pop a wee one.
It's just that front end, the headlight, how it's mounted is awful, the 1290 looks amazing, it's like this one was born and hasn't fully grown into itself yet 😅
Awesome review but to be honest I don’t think that bike is very good looking so, as good as it is, that would be a deal breaker for me.
What size is the front wheel ? 😂😂😂
Are we not going to talk about the horse and buggy that went by?
What's the obsession taking bikes off road on test? We live in a country were we get done for riding off road. These bikes are for Sweden, France Germany, Norway. Our country is crap for off road. Having now vented I would like one for TET if I go to Portugal
I rode this Saturday on a demo day and was too keen on it tbh
i thought i heard the suspension is the new WP......squirrel.
Good review, but 40MPG on an 800 - thirsty!
Mine averages 55mpg ???
Fuel tank only starts reading when the tanks are half
yes,it gives approximate range remaining after that
All cool except price
We're just going to ignore that pony cart in the background lol.
haha, wondered if anyone would spot that :-)
