Adventure Shootout: BMW F850 GSA vs KTM 790 Adventure vs Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro
Вставка

- It’s been said dozens of times, many different ways. The definition of adventure is unique to the person defining it. Like fingerprints, no two answers will be identical. Case in point: the KTM Adventure 790 R, BMW F 850 GS Adventure, and Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. These bikes make up three-quarters of the burgeoning middleweight adventure category. These motorcycles comprise a niche within a popular category, yet within a few miles of riding each bike, it’s remarkable just how differently each brand approaches the task. The core philosophy of each marque shines through in these machines and plainly portrays how its part of the world, and the people riding there, define adventure.

The acting in this video is porn-level
lol
Facts. But it was worth it to see Bostrom.
It made me go straight here, and then someplace else to look at Tiger. Burf acting
And not in a good way
Exactly 😂
As a completely satisfied owner of the KTM 790R, the best thing you can do for this bike is replace the Karoo 3 tires. They cause the vibration Eric talked about. I'm currently running the Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires and they are great on the street and have worked well in the mountains and in Death Valley. Cheers
FanOWater agree on the Karoos, good tip on the Dunlop’s, been hearing good things. I also own this bike & it is a blast, I bought it for off & am pleasantly surprised w/ it on road, will invest in some new tread, gets squirrelly coming outa corners hot
FanOWater - Just mounted the Trailmax Missions on my 2012 R1200GS and agree in overall performance. Great road tire and surprising off-road performance.
Fanowater, clearly a true motorcyclist. One of the biggest factors affecting our riding is tyres, yet the discussions on these forums hardly mention them. On road it matters, but off road they can be the difference between an adventure and a mission. Good call.
I second the merits of the Dunlop Trailmax. I’m running those on my Scrambler 1200 XE, they’re surprisingly good off road and have handled spirited road rides without issue. I highly recommend them.
🤷 I love them! They shred on gravel, clean out in mud, and have kept me upright on tar. I bought a couple Mitas (eo7 & e10) just in case
Did you try to stiffen the suspension of the Tiger to see if that would keep it from bottoming out? Do you guys generally adjust adjustable suspensions to your preference, or is that too time consuming?
I've been riding an R6 for a decade. I need to expand my horizons and that KTM is calling my name.
Wait for the Duke 890...😍
Definitely try DS/adv riding, you may fall in love
Why not pick up the Tenere 700 and stick with team Yamaha?
@@TonyGoesRiding , Tenere 700 is indeed a great off road bike...but im not sure if its a good touring bike too. The seat is very narrow and lack of any electronic rider aides makes it is an inferior product....but it will defenitely
last forever...
dbdan61 yeah mate time to upgrade to a litre bike 😂😂😂
Man what happened to the mid class bmw?! When they were launched they were fairly nimble. Now it’s hard to tell it apart from a 1250
Yea, I had 2 F800's and they were pretty good for the time. Now this F850 is just a bloated pig. They should have went the other way like KTM did.
The good old days when 650cc was midsize ...can't remember growing 4 foot taller & becoming a body builder in my life time. Not sure if I'm even a midsize human..lol
Not to mention, $17k is really close to the R1250GS. Not a bargain anymore.
The 1250 is MASSIVE compared to the 850. Way to much in my experience riding both. The 850 seems so well thought out and designed with a ton of passion.
@@nathanboeger9329 you really think its so much more Culberson then the 800? I haven't ride the 800 soo i have no reference.
17.5k for the BMW no adjustable front suspension!!? Profoundly stupid decision given better AND less expensive choices.
that's typical german tactics for the day robbery
That's BMW for ya, all the GS's are insanely overpriced
@@Juuul89 the 850 has no use, anymore. Its 20kg lighter than the 1200/1250, with bad suspension, higher center of gravity and less power.
@@joost1183 I beg to differ. My 850 (non adventure) has tackled trails that 1200/1250’s wouldn’t have stood a chance on. And the suspension is not “bad” at all. It only bottoms out occasionally on really big jumps. Also the 21” front is invaluable off-road.
I literally don’t know what the 850 GSA is for. It’s a big road bike, and for the price I’d just assume get the 1250. It’s “mid-size”, but a pig off-road. It’s engine is ok, but not particularly exciting in the twisties, and without enough suspension for the twisties. The 850 GSA is the exact same spec wet weight as the old 1200 GS. It’s just a total compromise bike that doesn’t seem to make anyone happy.
Really great having Eric on this comparison
These reviews often have very different tires. If you want to make a dirt focused review, you kinda need to match the tires a little better regardless of how the bike comes off the truck.
The "Enduro Pro" mode on my R1200GS requires you to plug a chip into a port under the seat to activate it. Might be the same on the 850.
Correct.
The 800gs adv is as heavy as the 1200 standard gs was in 2010. this has nothing to do with middleweight.
Seeing Eric Bostrom was cool. That dude knows how to wring the neck of a motorcycle. He was a beast when he raced.
How much i hate it when someone is talking about negatives or positives on suspension without having it tuned and tried again.
Agree to a point, but this is based on out-of-the-box bikes, too. Sure you can have suspension tuned and upgraded, and maybe lots of folks do, but then we're not talking stock bikes for review purposes.
@@ForeverUnknowing No one talks about upgrades. Suspension Set Up is the single most important parameter for the handling of a bike. Having it set up for the rider weight and riding style is critical for its function. Why do you have adjustable Suspension when you dont use it.
@@Keka-vg3ut Yeah, I agree with you there. I thought by tuning you meant making physical changes to the suspension, not just making use of the adjustments. In that case, they probably don't really discuss it in these comparison videos maybe due to the fact that that's a very in-depth subject and it's easier in a comparison video to just point out "x bike has adjustable suspension, but y bike doesn't", if you see what I mean. But yes, I do agree it's important to have the suspension set up properly, of course.
Thanks for this review. Based in part on this info, I sold my 790 R and picked up a Tiger 900 Rally Pro today.
really? ...and - r u happy now?
@@kloppskalli I'm always happy.
How are you finding the rally pro? Trying to decide between that and the Africa twin at the moment..seems like they both have thr same suspension issues??
Would like to see a comparo on similar tires since they are such a huge factor but cool review, thanks!
Yeah... not cool to test on different tires.
@@titaniumgear690 They're being tested as supplied from the dealer.
Who determines what the bike is designed for? Clearly the manufacturer has an opinion on what they've designed it for based on the tyres they supply.
@@epectitus4873 The GS is available with more aggressive tires as a 0 cost option from the factory.
I own the premium package 850 GSA and ride the daylights out of it on the trail. I run Karoo 3s, put it on Enduro Pro and ride hard on the road and in the dirt. Good review guys. It is good seeing you back what you guys do best.
The KTM Adventure S model would have been a closer comparison to the others. The R model is much more dirt-bike.
Great comparison of the bikes guys, the triumph looks cool, I’ve yet to ride it but having ridden the T7 back in September I can say your riders/readers are in for a treat....
I miss the old days of the guys in AMA roadracing like the Bostroms.
This was a great comparison considering the circumstances, thanks guys.
To even discuss the 850Adv as a comparison to the other two bikes is just completely unjust???Why not have the full blown spec std 850 at hand?
I was thinking exactly the same thing.
Yeah, the standard f850 is way cheaper and in general an equally capable bike for most riders
@@khakimzhanmiras not to mention looks the coolest, am I right?
@@robinroma6285 no
I love the triple brake lights on the Triumph! Is that a stock feature?
Can you test them in full adventure mode, loaded with 70kg of luggage, doing some big miles?
"The definition of adventure (bike) is unique to the person defining it"... but for the bank they are all the same.
Lol 😂
Thumbs up just for having Eric. I haven't seen him since the road racing days of AMA.
From a price point of view, the Tenere 700 is more comparable to the base versions of those bikes, not these top end versions, so be sure to use those in that comparison.
Really hard to find a base spec BMW bike. BMW sure wont give you one
Yeah, good luck getting a poorly equipped BMW for a test :) At least where I live they always are upped. The 850GS they had for test rides in the dealership had basically all the upgrades you can sensibly put into it that added close to 50% of the base price to the bike.... As for the T7 - it's a cheap bike that basically has nothing but good engine and slim body - does not mean it's bad, it's just for a different kind of adv rider.
KTM and Yamaha are coming at the middleweight adventure bike (offroad biased) from two different aproaches. One expensive and high tech and one built for a price and low tech. That to me is a great thing as it gives potential purchasers a great choice. From what I've seen though the T7 suffers from poor suspension and lacks the ultimate power delivery of the 790. If truth be told the KTM has far to much power for use offroad and you can rework the T7s suspension and still have a fantastic bike for less money than the KTM. You'll just be lacking all the high tech the KTM comes with (TC, bluetooth, TFT, QS - optional etc) but that stuff is not for everyone anyway.
I wish someone would include the triumph scrambler 1200 XE in one of these shoot outs.
I was just thinking the same. Mine can do all that these did and I dare say a bit better in some instances. And it certainly has them beat in the looks department...IMO.
I'm not so sure how it would do. The Triumph Scramblers (Street & 1200) share two shortcomings as adventure bikes. First, luggage. So far, nobody has come up with a good option for dual bags. The second problem is the stance. The high pipe routing forces a weird bow legged stance on the bike, at least for me. I always feel like my right foot is about to slip off to the side because of the pressure from the pipe. Perhaps it bugs me so much because it's asymmetrical. The right leg is pushed, the left not.
@@mojosdad68 yeah, the Scramblers definitely kick-ass on the social aspect of adventure.
I appreciate all your comparisons, but why would you compare the BMW F850 GSA to the KTM and Triumph. When the better and more equal comparison would have been the standard BMW F850 GS. What difference would that have made in weight and mind set at the size?
Thanks and keep up the good work.
Allan.
That BMW is so wide from the front. Why did they do that? I also wish that all manufacturers would carry higher rated springs available. Us, heavy guys really miss it. :) A good review anyways. Waiting for the review of these bikes on the same tires.
So, is the goal to see how fast you can do it?
So who won? Gs or tiger? I am gs owner and I want to know if tiger is better or not? For now I prefer gs because eltronic suspension and other details
Great review gents, would loved to have had the T7 in the mix, that would have made your review complete.
To be honest, the 850gs adventure isn't the true competitor of the other 2 bikes. For that BMW has the standard 850gs. Weights 15kg less, has slightly smaller trail and is equipped with a longer front travel suspension.
Ridgecrest? Hey, I live in Ridgecrest, whats with Ridgecrest being mentioned?
If a munufacturer released a 1.500cc adventure bike, the 1250gs would not become middleclass. Thus, displacement is not everything and neither of these bikes are middleclass anymore.
They made the BMW that wide in the front for wind deflection purposes (highway use) + better cooling (bigger air intakes), but I agree it's intimidating to ride after you jumped off the 790 :) I did this back to back test and the perceived weight & actual weight was more than obvious.
... I find the KTM has an intimidating 'lower chest' ;-)) ... but the low center of gravity must be awesome
KTM all the way of these three. I'll give up some road comfort for the off road prowess. I've been eyeing the 790 a lot lately and it may very well be my next bike.
You only add the weight of more gas over the base model if you fill the tank..... I ride with lots of guys with rally tanks and for short hops they just don't fill them.
Thanks nice video. I would love a comparaison review of all adventure bikes that have a 19 inches front wheel. Best regards, take care, stay safe, keep faith...
Just from the clips it's obvious the KTM is the most capable off-road
Its obvious by brand name already ;
i'm wondering why is not in every comparison or vs the ducati ms 950s...
This looks like a good time, I have never even had a motorcycle but this is exactly what I have in mind.
I hope you update this review after the T700 is available
Would a Dampner On KTM Help with Highway Speed...so close to pulling the trigger on a 790 R ...I want it for 50/50 riding....
Space Odyssey type music!! Was waiting for the plot to thicken.
When the 890 Adv hits the road would it also be equiped with the Stylema calipers..🤔🤔🤔
I’d be surprised. More like KTM branded.
Does anyone recognize what model of gloves Tom is wearing? I really like that design. I can't make out the brand, resolution is not quite high enough.
Best view starts at 13:50.
The Enduro pro from manufacturer come only when you install adv tyres on the BMW GS 850 adv.
They complain about the BMW being wide. Well it shouldn't worry me. I currently ride a Victory Cross Country .I've ridden it on moderate gravel and sand without mishap. When I sat on The BMW F850 GS, at the dealer, I was so shocked about how light it felt, I almost fell right off it!,
Still waiting for the smaller Africa Twin, but that Tiger looks good. Is there a Tiger 700?
Timothy McKean 900 cc tripple...
Will there be a KTM adventure 390r?
Don't think that is possible maybe the twin cylinder 490 Adventure R
The MY2021 490 ADV may come with spoked wheels.
They just released the Adventure.. not sure about the R designation
@@devxv why would it not be possible?
maybe after few years but atm you can buy accessories from ktm to go for offroad trails for 390
As I have ridden all of the I am surprised nobody comment on the heat direct exactly to your legs on either side of the Triumph (thanks to the split radiators and the gills). Living in Texas that was for me a concern when trying to decide which one to buy. Any comments on that are welcome. PS- I truly believe Triumph could have done a better job on the TFT screen. To me the BMW is the best.
Revisiting this video...Wonder if the 790 has had its cams replaced lol
You should've added 1050 V-Strom into the mix!
That's a road bike and a heavier catagory engine
@@Juuul89 if it fits in the same weight cat and price. Why not?
Excellent comparison. Keep it on guys!
Still blows my mind that you can't get adjustable forks on these BMW's... I mean, what the hell is the problem BMW? We gotta go drop 2000.00 on some medium spec fork cartridges just to catch up to the competition.
Waiting for that mad 890 duke r engine in ktm adventure, it'll be a hoot to ride
& also power the MY2021 Husqvarna Norden 901 :)
Great video, really liked it. I am choosing between these 3 now. How do these compare to each other in terms of brute acceleration (like a drag race). Which one would win, be second and third ?
I couldn't live with the looks of the GS or the KTM. Only the Triumph is styled properly.
Yeah... But its not like you will buy bike based in looks only right 😂 ;
Id take 790 and just fix front light/wasp head situation 🤮😂👍
@@Angry-Lynx not completely, but I'd never buy a bike I thought was ugly.
Do those bikes seem too bloated for that type of riding?
Look up Chris Birch 1190
Bmw sure LOOKS bloated 😂
Too damn big for my skills anyway!
Thanks for the video review. Selling my 701 for something more comfortable on the road sections. I have never owned a bike (Adv or trail) that didn’t need new springs and suspension work, let alone protection. Most of the trail bikes come with laughable plastic skid plates that hardly cover frame elements. I am trying to decide between the T7 and Triumph..
T7..logically 😊
What a great coincidence that Eric shows up for a ride! Though choice: I still haven't decided between the Beemer and the Tiger. KTM isn't my pick for mostly highway with occasional off-road adventures. Thanks for a nice review!
Excellent all the way around. Thanks !
Great review guys 👍
When can we get the ultimate review and comparison between he BMW F900 XR, Ducati Multistrada 950 and Triumph Tiger 900? Mainly for commuting and touring.
My dream bike is the multistrada 950 I don't think I can ever justify the money. The f900xr is a good try but falls short in many ways only a twin, down on power. suspension is nowhere near as good. And the triumph would get left behind 95hp vs 115hp and the tiger has narrow tyres vs the other two. 100 front 150 rear the xr has 120 front 180 rear. Would all come down to price in the end. I think the rally version of the tiger is a better bike than the GT. I think for what it Is the F900xr is brilliant no other bike like this has ever been offered.
Chris Redfield Thanks for a really good breakdown. I do indeed agree that the Multistrada is my dream bike as well. After doing the financial calculations for all three bike according to the specs I want, the Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro would set me back £12,800. While the BMW F900 XR TE would be £12,535 and the Ducati Multistrada 950 S will be £13,895. Based on pricing I want to know if the Ducati indeed is worth the extra £1360 more than the BMW. Also seem the BMW with the packs I’ve selected comes with more tech. The Tiger 900 is roughly£300 more expensive than the BMW, leavening me to wonder if the Triumph is to expensive for what it is or if it’s indeed justified?
Great comparison. Great job guys!
As a big fan of BMW and riding a GS1200 and want to step up a lighter bike I must admit that that triumph tiger is a beautifull bike. The BMW is also a beauty but when I have to pay 17,5 k plus several 1000 euro's to adjust the suspension to have the bike riding as I like, then it will be a nogo. The Triumph will be the one for me commuting 110 miles a day to work. Hell even the KTM wich I am not a fan of, will be in my garage. Nice review and thanks.
110 miles? is that one way or round trip. 110 mile commute 1 way is nutz. You need to move closer to work.
@@percussion44 no its vice versa.
thanks for that, appealing bikes all of them but given the complexly of that dash I will keep my old GS
Where is the 700 tenere
halfazzhomesteader, not available yet.
I had a 14 or 15 tiger 800. LOVED it but the seat was freaking awful....it was sloped in a way that would cause you to slide forward no matter what you did. OUCH! HAD to send the seat out.
You're testing two road bikes that can go ok offroad and one offroad bike that can go ok on the road. Not really a ballanced test. You should of used the KTM 790 Adv (non-R).
Gs cost more than adventure r and suspension is 240 mm. Despite prices is the weakest one
BMW f850 gs. Is the Best at all .
Really weird to have a UA-cam channel and not answer a single question from your viewers
Agree Ryan, it will be interesting if in the vid with all 3 bikes (4 if T7 included) use the same tires. I think if you call Dunlop to provide their new product Trailmax Mission for that mission, who knows they will be interested as they claim it is 50/50 type of tire, really suit to test how it performs in each bikes.
Thank's for interesting review 😁
I love these middleweight bikes.. I just go down dirt service roads & a lot of city/highway traveling so I actually got the '21 Africa twin AS w DCT transmission. I have my bike set up with full crash bars from alt-Rider & skid plate. I bet my 🏍️💨 is close to 600 lb combined with the full tank of ⛽ all the shit I've added + that automatic tranny 🤷🏼♂️ the good thing about it it's nice & protected, it's also very stable when you're out on the open road if it's windy or anything but when it's pretty windy I stay around 60-65 mph
I would probably buy a tiger 800 from last year better suspension (WP) and thicker bash plate
Garry Rhodes Just got mine 2 weeks ago. 8 month old for half the sticker price. I love the bike so far. The tripple engine is a peach!
Dan Calypso just after I posted this I purchased a used 2018 xcx and I love it. The triple sound is addictive
Two of those bikes were shod with road tyres. Bizarre comparison!
Keyboard Dancers, they were tested as they would come from the dealership.
Which bike I'll be buying?! I'll tell you which bike I'll be buying: T7 any day of the week.
would have liked to see the new strom
it has a 19 inch front tire and would have lost big time off road in comparison due to its suspension travel .. not quite in this class
Why does everyone keep comparing the Adventure R to the other bikes? The regular Adventure is more comparable.
The Tiger produces a huge amount of heat onto the rider; deal breaker here in Texas !
I know it doesn't belong here, but I am sad when I don't see the wee strom
JustThaor I hear ya. I have '12 Wee Strom that I just love! Mind you, I don't think it's really for off road other then gravel roads... Thinking of getting the V-Strom 1050 next.
I dont see point of these pseudo adv bikes... What theyre really for? They try to took like adv bikes but have street like ground clearance and suspension... They are SuVs of bike world imo.
That would fall into the "budget" category, and none of these bikes come close.
I would prefer the Strom!
Sad you have to add it but the Andreani cartridge kit will make a a big difference in the front end of the F850. The previous F800 was dogshit. I wonder how the 850 would be if BMW offered it with a real suspension...
All good bikes but... KTM first BMW then Triumph all good though! I'd be happy with any one of them for a touring.
Naahh, ktm first and triumph after. Bmws are overpriced, overweighted, have bad suspension and bad driving electronics
@@E-087 Gad to see your opinion. nice that we agree on the KTM.
The winner is the ktm 790 advr in offroad and the bmw 850 GSA the best on the asphalt.
KTM all the way
For all the kitschy but not terrible cinematography, you guys should get some better mics.
you have to be pretty daft to want the BMW over the other two. I have to go with the Tiger knowing that Im never going to ride that much off road with the KTM.
I love that the Pro Racer's Peeve are the Brakes!
Mulligan the Veteran you can only go as fast as you can comfortably brake.
Check out Steve Kamrad’s review of the Triumph on advpulse.com. His opinion is best in the segment by a large margin. I rode a Rally Pro and GSA 850 back to back and have to agree. 790R or T700 are great off road but too narrowly focused in my opinion.
Exactly. These 3 all ended up going for the bike they felt best off road, instead of all round ADV!
No Yamaha Tenere 700? I'm thinking that's the king of this segment.
Literally watched a few minutes into the video and got my answer. I think we are all asking for the T700 in the U.S.
Those I know that have ridden both are giving the Tenere the edge (they have both bought Teneres after testing). Sounding like the KTM has a slight advantage off road with the T700 better overall package, and for the price difference easy to upgrade the T700 suspension. 17k T700 compared to 24k 790 in NZ.
Yes Yamaha T7 would win big time!!!
Tenere 700 is a beginner bike with horrible suspension and full of plastics .
I think it rusted and fell apart on the way to the shootout. Have you seen the 10,000km review. The thing is made of Chinesium.
It sounds like you guys are confusing dual sport bikes with adv bikes. They are made for adventure touring, not trails...
Music? Why? Unnessessary. To mutch text. To few engine sound.
Great video. Great comparison. When does bmw make a real off-road bike? Maybe a 750gs whit all electronics (not like T700).
They need to bring back the H2 Enduro. That thing was sweet.
When getting to affordability, maintenance costs and reliability side of things (which would be a major factor for me as a buyer of any bike), which one gives the best bang for your buck? Obviously the Yamaha T7 would win hands down here, but it wasn't available for you to test yet.
Tenere 700 isn’t included coz its way too obvious what poeple would pick. My heart is on the tiger but Tenere will be the #1 spot for now. Followed by Tiger, then the KTM and this time BMW is behind of them all. #Midsize
No, the Tenere 700 isn't included because when this was made, the pre-release test bikes hadn't even made it to America, much less the bikes for sale. This was filmed in California.
Two sport tourers and a dirt bike. Got it.
👌🏻🤣🤣🤣👍🏻
The Tenere Rally Is here.. 4 way shoot out time guys
KTM versus Yami T7
I would buy all 3 if i could
The Africa Twin definitely missing here. The bmw... A step in the wrong direction. The Triumph the best looking and seems to be sweet ride! At the end, if you are really really into adventureous off road riding, the choice is no other than the ktm. I just don't understand why ktm went for a cable clutch...
