- A playthrough of Ocean's 1993 license-based platformer for the Super Nintendo, Dennis the Menace.
Played through on the hard difficulty level.
I remember my parents buying a VHS copy of the Dennis the Menace movie for my sister and I when it was first released. We had always loved the show, and we quickly came to love the film as well, so we were pretty excited when we found a copy of the brand new SNES game on the shelves of our local Hollywood Video soon after. You'd best believe that that cart came home with us for the weekend. After spending some time with it, however, we had no complaints about it being returned to the store on Sunday afternoon.
The game is a maze-based platformer. Most levels have you, as Dennis, searching for five large coins taken from Mr. Wilson's collection as you fend off bad guys with a slingshot, a water pistol, and a pea shooter. You begin in Mr. Wilson's house, and from there move on to a park, a boiler room, and some sewers before things wrap up in the woods where Dennis finally saves Joey and Margaret from Switchblade Sam.
As you'd expect from Ocean, the game looks and sounds fantastic. The backgrounds are beautifully drawn and colored, the animation is extremely smooth, and the tunes, though a bit low key, are better than you'll find in the majority of SNES games.
For some reason, though, beyond the first level, none of it feels related to the license. The only time you'll see a recognizable character after Mr. Wilson's cameo appearance in the first level is at the last boss fight. The majority of the time, Dennis will be fighting psychotic rabbits, birds, steam vents, and tedium.
And unfortunately, it turns out that tedium is Dennis's most formidable adversary.
There is an endless parade of levels that all ask the same thing of you, and beyond the stage-themed window dressing, little ever changes between them. Worse yet, most of the mazes are huge, they stretch the play time as much as possible, and they are loaded with infinitely respawning enemies that attack relentlessly. The enemy placement and constant respawns turn what would already be a dull, boring game into a game that, while still dull and boring, also ends up being a very frustrating one.
In other words, it feels like most of Ocean's games for the Super Nintendo. It looks and sounds amazing, but the gameplay is a total chore. But hey, at least the SNES game can be finished. The same can't be said for its Amiga counterpart.
If you'd like to see the same gameplay ideas implemented in an entertaining and worthwhile way, I'd suggest checking out Little Nemo: The Dream Master on NES ( • Video ). It, too, is a license-based collect-a-thon platformer with challenging gameplay, but unlike Dennis, Little Nemo is engaging and fun.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
My sister and I loved the show and the movie, but I distinctly remember renting the game when it was brand new, and we did not love it. Thirty years later, my opinion on it hasn't much changed.
I have the same exact experience although I played it on gameboy. The show and movie were awesome.
Yeah, this game is awful. Probably one of worst *_"Ocean"_* games next to *_"The Addams Family"_* for SNES.
@Joey Ford I'm glad that you like it. But, for me, the levels are not very fun to traverse, the control is *SO* slippery, and it, in *NO* way, resembles the movie it's based on.
I can see why some people like it, but I see it as just another crappy licensed game.
@Joey Ford Hard agree, man! I loathe *_"Lethal Weapon"_* SNES.
@Joey Ford I liked it too. The Puggsley game though... omfg I hate that game.
I remember playing this as a kid and never being able to get past the 1st level. I also remember Mr Wilson in the first level would scare the hell out of me because of how he seemingly came out of nowhere. I did actually manage to beat this game about 2 or so years ago. This game really needs like a password system. I think it would have made the game feel a bit less tedious what with being able to take a break from it and resume your progress later. Overall while I don't quite think this game is as bad as people have said it is, I don't really find it to be good enough to try to defend either.
I never got past the 1st level either!!
Glad I’m not the only one who was terrified of Mr. Wilson haha
Unless I’m suffering from another Nelson Mandela effect, the game does have a level skip option. You have to go in the options and play certain music tracks in a certain order and also have other options set a certain way.
I found the tip back in 1996.
The only thing is…….
I now cannot find the tip on how to do it anywhere on the Internet
And AVGN was also right, in saying that the park boss looks like someone on "Ren & Stimpy".
Ah, back in the day when nearly every remotely successful movie had to have a video game.
0:05 Dennis: Hey Mr. Wilson!
0:40 Level 1: Mr. Wilson's House 2:10 "Watch Out For Mr. Wilson!"
9:59 Level 2: The Park 30:20 "Look Out! It's That Bossy Betty Sue and She's Not Playing Nice!"
31:35 Level 3: The Boiler Room 47:00 "Uh-Oh! Here Comes The Coach and He Likes To Play Rough!"
48:00 Level 4: The Sewers 1:02:50 "Yikes! It's The Killer Mutant Fish!"
1:04:45 Last Level: The Woods 1:25:10 "Get Ready To Face The Evil, Thieving Switchblade Sam!"
Ever notice how Betty sue fights ..sort of.. like wispy woods off Kirby dream land and kirbys adventure
I miss my childhood the 90s was the best era
"Dennis the menace? More like Dennis the murderer."
"Hey Mr.Wilsooooooooon!"

"MORE LIKE DENASS THE MENASS"
avgn did a video on this game it was funny i was watching it and i saw you did a video on it
Of course, the final boss throws fruit. We all know Dennis can only eat candy, so fruit will obviously hurt him. Right????
Fair play beating this game man. AVGN couldn't even beat it.
AVGN needs to make a part 2 someday and then finally beats this game.
@@kevinbbadd na its just a very hard game, avgn is pretty good, he has beaten alot of really hard games, but this one was just another level
@@Dennan really not that hard just tedious
AVGN has beaten Ghosts and Goblins twice if that gives any perspective
Ya'll know he's a character right?
I was expecting a bad ending
I wasn't disappointed
I didn't think that last boss was ever gonna die lol. I've beat some hard games like Magician Lord and Super Ghouls and Ghost, but this one looks harder!!! Nice job!!!
Not many people played this but it's one of my fav platformers of this genre, very reminiscent of Cuphead for modern players.
What a masochist. Also, great job. The only other SNES game that gives me nightmares on how unfair it is is RoboCop 3.
Oh man, Robocop 3 sucked. It was so unfair.
@@NintendoComplete a bulletproof cyborg who takes damage by touching a person. And not just a bump damage. When he makes contact with a person his health DRAINS like rapidly. That to me was the biggest slap in the face.
Walter Matthau was an awesome mr. wilson
Agreed. The Listerine nasal spray and the Chiclet teeth still make me laugh.
When i played this game I thought the boiler pattern was going to include 5 and 6, including the sewers and the woods
AVGN was right. This game is hard for all the wrong reasons. And when you consider how he was unable to find a complete walkthrough on GameFAQs, that's how he knows this.
This game was so hard and so many levels
Man !! The last boss looks like FREDDY KRUEGER from Nightmare on Elm Street BEFORE he get burn alive by the parents of the victims. That bring this game to a whoOOOOOle new level!
Great writeup. 👍
Did a legit run through of this a couple years ago. In the mid 90s when I went to my cousins house, we used to play this and Super Ghouls & Ghosts. It was frustrating but cool to finally beat it.
The Flintstones movie game with the creepy, heavy-breathing John Goodman character sprite was the more enjoyable Ocean movie-license platformer for me. Hopefully the Genesis version gets leaked one day, love the soundtrack.
Dennis The Menace 2 Society. In theaters this summer.
Haha! Dennis just starts a gang of delinquents and they vandalize the whole neighborhood.
Don't Be A Dennis The Menace To Mr. Wilson While Drinking Apple Juice In Your Overalls
@@Krbyfan1 🤨... .... *_WHAT?_*
*_"Don't be a menace to Mr. Wilson... Drinking Juice in Your Overalls"_*
Was that a line in *_"Menace II Society"_* (Never seen it, btw).
@UCmpUIFHUqPTe1vhLiowPE_w Might've. It's a Critic reference. "The show from the 90's produced by most of the Simpsons people."
Every time I played this game, George Wilson kept on grabbing Dennis Mitchell.
Are those coins Dennis collects supposed to be Mr. Wilson's gold?
Gotta love that game!!
The horror, the horror
Happy anniversary to this kid's comic🎉
So um... why did he kill this girl on a swing again?
Nesquick bunny trying to kill Dennis at the park
I wonder if there is a game based on the other Dennis the Menace (The Beano one).

Why does Margaret look like Arthur ?
Gender dysphoria?
I can't beat Boiler 3 to this day. I can find all 4 coins, but reaching the exit without falling into death pits is impossible.
I have never seen nor played this game before. So, in the first level, it drove me crazy how you attacked all those things but didn't even bother trying to attack Mr. Wilson. Therefore, I downloaded this game specifically so I could do that and get him out of my hair.
Then I realized... you can't attack him as attacks go right through him...

Mr. Wilson shows up on screen *IMMEDIATELY* and scares the Grumps.
Very classic moment, I'll say.
That's it's Dennis, you're getting 7 across the Ass! "I lost 3 of my fingers in Korea!" That'll teach you not to play with my Butt-Ball!
This game really overstays its welcome.
This game IS HELL
I never beated
Martha! Where are the G.D. garden lanterns?
*_"Dennis the Menace"_* . A great Black-and-white comedy, with a great movie adaptation (.... never watched the cartoon as a kid). A blonde haired kid constantly causing trouble for his neighbor, *_Mr. Wilson_* . Simple premise for a comedy, but it worked out well.
It's been years since I last saw *_"Dennis the Menace"_* . The last Dennis related thing I remember (Of all things) was the *_"Game Grumps"_* one-off playthrough of this game ( 🎸 *_"DENNIS!!! DENNIS!!! DENNIS!!! DENNIS!!!"_* ).
This game reminds me of the terrible *_"Addams Family"_* SNES game. Especially with the same composer doing this game. Boring music, poor controls, uninteresting levels... the works, really. Better off passing this one out.
Classic!!
For some reason 16 bit Mr Wilson is scarier than 16 bit Christopher Lloyd
A North American Nintendo Entertainment System version of the game was planned, released at the same time as the Super NES and Game Boy, but never released.

While the 1993 film is great, the DTV sequels from 1998 and 2007 are not.
This is not 256 colours, this looks like Amiga graphics. Bad lazy port by Ocean.
You did what the angry video game nerd couldn't do.
Back when it was a lucky guess if a game based on a Movie/TV Show/Comic was gonna even close to being considered decent.
Dennis the Menace, more like Den-*SS the Men-*SS!
Who remembers the Game Grumps episode of this game?
I definitely do. My favorite part was when Mr. Wilson scared the crap out of Dan & Arin.
It's one of the best one-offs they've done.
That was good. Still remember the rap song that Dan did
Came into the comments to see if there were any Game Grumps mentions. Not disappointed.
Didn't Ocean make a version of this game that didn't have enough memory for the ending or something? They made the last area of the game feature a jump that could not be cleared, preventing anyone from being able to beat the game?
Your're thinking of the *_Amiga_* version.
Kinda funny how that is the same scenario that the *_DOS_* version of the first TMNT game had. Two bad games that you can't beat. What are the odds?
@@Dorian_Scott Apparently, it's the Amiga 500 version only. The Amiga AGA (1200) and CD32 version could be finished.
You can tell the same musician(s) made the music for the addams family
Ahh, of course. It's made by Ocean.
Looks and sounds a lot like MR NUTZ
If you're gonna make a Dennis the Menace video game, why would you base it on the live action movie and not the cartoon or comic strip?
What are those enemies on the park level branches? Severed bird heads?
The music is so loud, that even SPCplay won't play it at 400% volume or even 300%.
Also, Dennis' voice in the title screen sounds like he's screaming something like "Dennis the Willset!".
This game and bug bunny was my fav 😢❤
Mr Wilson always scared me back as kid in 1993 at first level.
Beautiful games nes & snes. Simple and practic console. Nostalgia 😥😢😭
Huh?
@@topfranluis1 maybe he meant 'practical' (???)
@@cathode6252 I think he's talking the consoles, in general. I don't think he called this game "beautiful".
@@Dorian_Scott I am referring to the "practic" in his sentence.
the logo from sewers at the title cards look like something outta Boogerman
Elements taken from Mickeys magical quest 😂
Instead of Dennis the Menace being a generic platformer:
It would've made a lot more sense if it we're a Zelda/Metal Gear-type adventure-game where Dennis Mitchell's missions are centered on annoying George Wilson, foiling Switchblade Sam's schemes, and messing with the babysitter (all without getting caught).
probably 1 of like maybe 5 ppl that have ever beat this game
Cool game
