@@dridrid2008 That's true that this game seems hard especially without "Game Genie" but, the other SNES game of "Addams Family Values" seems much harder since it doesn't give any information on where to go and what to do (you have to find out for yourself on what you are supposed to do) and you play as Fester moving up, down, left, and right. But here on this "Addams Family" game you only move left and right as Gomez.
This game was made in Europe. A 8 people team for an European game in the early 90s ... is actually a pretty large team. Very commonly games were made by a coder, a graphic artist and a musician, and that's all. Sometimes the coder would even also make the music or the graphics.... or sometimes even everything by himself. Frontier: Elite 2 was a juggernaut of a game (for its time) made by just David Braben and his musician (can't recall the name) Shadow of the Beast which is a huge classic of its era was made by Martin Edmondson and Paul Howarth both doing coding and graphics and David Whittaker doing the music. And so on.
I remember my dad picking this game up from a pawnshop for me (there was a time when every pawnshop would have just a box of snes cartridges lying around). I never came close to beating it, saw any of these secrets, or even a majority of the bosses- but I still loved the game and this is bringing back some memories!
An Ocean game that doesn't suck? Whaaaat? Seriously, The Addams Family is a pretty good Mario-style platformer, and it looks damn nice for such an early SNES game.
I absolutely LOVE the movie and the original show, so it was a nice surprise when the games that came out were actually pretty decent. While it was a rental, I still had fun with it.
So is the Fencer Sword a hidden power up you can only get secretly? Cause it destroys bosses and kinda breaks the game, but it looks like it would be way hard to beat without it.
As far as I can remember the sword is only available in two places. The hidden area and in the Library, when trying to save Fester. And to be honest, you have to be a very good player to get to a boss without taking a hit. So I guess the reward is that the sword destroys bosses super quick!
I just played it as a middle aged adult, it was still kind of tough. Didn't know about the Pugsly rooms though, would have made it a lot easier. Went in blind, just the ROM and a scan of the instruction book, the essential bought-it-in-1990 experience.
"The Addams Family is a highlight in almost 35 years of game development. The freedom allowed me by both [lead programmer] James Higgins and [game designer and artist] Warren Lancashire was amazing. My first interaction with Addams Family was in that game, Wednesday made me want to play that game again. The nostalgia is big. Today I just finished High School..
The other artwork implies this is the movie Addams Family and you're playing as the Raul Julia version of Gomez, but the sprite totally looks like the John Astin version of Gomez from the original TV series.
Surprisingly good game. The controls feel a bit slippery at first- Gomez moves a little too fast- but soon you get the hang of them. I like the fact that this blends Mario-style plattforming with the exploration and hub system of Metroid. While there’s a recommended sequence, you can play the game in any order you’d like and the challenge stays pretty much the same, making the game highly replayable. There is quite a variety of enemies to keep it fresh, and there are tons of secrets. Perhaps way too many. You could finish the game and still not find all the treasure.
I'd be very surprised if games like this didn't have an influence on 90s Rareware games. You can definitely see the foundations for such games here, particularly the Banjo Kazooie games.
The Addams Family is a great movie and has a great game too, on the SNES. Gomez is becoming like Mario, and there are ways he can attack enemies like him.
For some unknown to me reason I decided to beat this game recently. I have no prior experience with it, I never had SNES when growing up, I never even played it on emulator. But since I really like how it looks and I love everything halloween, I decided I will pick it up even though I'm not great with oldschool platformers. I'm 37 now and man... Git Gud doesn't even cut it. It's not the first time I'm playing a game aiding myself with solution/videos to get trough, but it's the first time I'm doing it for a platformer WHILE STILL grinding attempt after an attempt like some goddamn maniak. I don't know how anyone is supposed to find all those secrets on their own let alone finish the game without them. Even though I bought a cartridge, I moved to emulator bc of the ability to save. Without it - even with all the extra lives in the beginning - I wouldn't get past the deep fridge. Not that I got much further, but to hell with it. I WILL finish this game no matter what. S**t just got personal.
From the manual: Secret doors exist everywhere; of course, these doorways are usually invisible to the human eye, so exploration of walls and floors in highly recommended. Look out especially for inconsistencies in appearance. it is all very deceptive, but highly rewarding if discovered!
Does this game count as a metroidvania? It's basically one big interconnecting level, where you get upgrades (even if they're pretty much just health).
It almost feels like a combination of "hop and bop" with metroidvania, yet certain elements are also weirdly evocative of Jet Set Willy. The mansion setting, the individually named rooms, and the fixed/linear paths of certain enemies, to name a few.
@@PokemonShinyLover I can't imagine this generation of gamers would be able to handle this butt-clenching of a platformer. I tried so many times to get into this but it's pure 'Ocean' platforming, slippery controls and all, but with maze like level design thrown in. The game requires such precision that I just couldn't get into it.
Weird thing that people dont noticed its the Sprite of the Gomez character that is from the black white old series and all the Pictures are from the movie including the Raul Julia's Gomez lol
back in 1996, me and my brother were going to buy a video game on a rainy day. Our parents would let us get just one video game. I wanted to get Adams, but my brother convinced me to get Super Adventure Island. We chose SAI, and this game was left at the store for someone else to enjoy. Sigh...
I find it funny that this game was loosely based on the 1991 Addams Family movie, but Gomez's in-game portrait resembles Luis Guzmán, who did take on the role some thirty years later in Wednesday.
One of Ocean's better games, definitely. This and Fester's Quest for the NES (which is nowhere near as bad as most make it out to be) remain my favorite Addams Family video games.
I prefer this game to Fester's Quest. The soundtrack isn't *_as_* good, but at least it captures the Addams Family aesthetic well and isn't frustratingly hard.
i remember the company Ocean making really good music for their games, i.e. Addams Family and also Robocop 3. i had this game back then but i remember not liking it because it had slippery controls and was hard. i may pick it up cheap online and give it another whirl.
I don´t have the minimal idea, when was having 8 years old was can finish this game. Very hard, and tough zones. Now at my 34 is impossible to beat it!!!!
It's a hop-and-bop. Super Mario Brothers may be the king of the hop-and-bop genre but it sounds crazy to call 200+ different 8 and 16 bit games "technically Mario games".
Despite feeling like you are always running on ice (at least Genesis version), I was always very fond of this title. Addams Family Values is another good one to check out, going with a Fester's Quest style top down view and taking cues from Zelda. Puggsly's Scavenger Hunt I also kind of like for its ridiculous difficulty. Its hard as nails, but never felt difficult due to bad game-design.
This is a fun game to play which I can only beat with "Game Genie." However, it's too bad you can't choose any Addams Family member you want but can only play as Gomez since if you can choose any other (Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Granny, or Fester) the ending would be different for each character.
It's difficult to think how just eight people could make a game this nice and fun.
And hard.
Not that uncommon back then. Still impressive, through.
I thought the Flintstones (the one based on the movie) was pretty good...presentation-wise at least, it was pretty hard, though.
