@lloydddddd I think it was more her feeling devastated for Kim. She knows better than anyone how much her daughter gave up and how much she wanted it. It's no different than being happy for and celebrating with your child when they win. She was heartbroken for her daughter.
The new life rule went into place because many teams got scoring preference due to being in later sessions, score build-up, etc. So some teams that were not great but who had one or two outstanding gymnasts were getting shafted with all the scores being lumped together. As it stood, the same countries tended to get preference in AA scoring anyhow. It did help gymnasts such as Onodi however.
I know, it was disgusting. They'd never get away with that now. The coverage of poor Kristi Phillips was the worst, they even compared her to her obese mother, predicting that she too would be obese. Apalling.
You can't look back at the early 90s through 2024 glasses. It's the way things were. No one knew any different. Sure it's disgusting now, but it just was at that time.
I think the new life rule was meant to minimize the number of perfect 10's. There were an excessive amount of 10's in the 88 team competition, which judges sometimes gave to handicap the individual events so that their favored gymnast would be in the lead heading into the finals. They also allowed the judges to take smaller deductions after 88 (.05 instead of .1 for mistakes), which also minimized the number of 10's. Amazing how there were so many perfect 10's in 88 and only 2 in 92.
Catherine H. The range of scores was too narrow and it was impossible to really differentiate the performances. And it was a bit blurry to understand. The current scoring system is complex, it has a lot of problems but at least it reflects the level of difficulties and of each routine. Back then a 9.7 was considered bad. It's like anything below 9.5 was a complete disaster.
i dont think kims mothers dissapointment was appaling, i think she was more upset for kim than anything else. and think of how much money and time they spent for this moment, and that could be one of the things to end it.
Can someone explain to me how the gymnasts were divided for the All-Around? Boginskaya had the highest totals for the unified team after the team competition, so why did she start out on FX?
I agree! Tatiana could just fly. Shannon had no amplitude whatsoever. She did have great form & technique (which allowed her to have world class difficulty).
Omg that's terrible. Remember when Christy Henrich weighed 95 pounds and a judge told her to lose weight. She became anorexic and died. Now here is Bouginskaya weighing in 110 pounds. I'm not calling her fat I just weigh a few more pounds more than her. But all I'm saying is that it's unfair.
@S.C.V. Not one of these athletes had a weight problem, not even close. They were all waifs compared to modern-day gymnasts who also have incredibly low body fat percentages.
+kamila Ford The new life rule is that scores don't carry over from one night to the next. Before it, scores that you got in a team final, both compulsory and optionals, were added to your all around score and apparatus scores to help determine a winner. As for why it was put into place, I'm not sure but I think it has something to do with trying to even out the scoring a little bit.
Yes, Boguinskaya got a 10 on her last event and Silivas was still up to perform. Entering her beam routine, she knew she had no chance to win, anymore because of the scores carrying over.
Would you prefer she screamed and cried? It looked to me as though she was trying not to look too upset. I didn't think she looked unsupportive at all.
The pressure Kim was under I cannot even start 2 imagine, luv her ❤❤❤❤
Bela "you're done to me. I go check out Betty now"
Bogi's got a pizza place in Katy, TX now. I wonder if her pizza is as fantastic as her gymnastics.

It's ironic how this competition was going to be better Boginskya and Zmeskal, but they both messed up and it ended being between Gutsu and Miller.
I think it was awful for Kim to be alone like that.
Me too! I have a few more competitions with her that I will be posting soon.

I hate how they list the gymnasts height and weight. -_- Like it's any of our business.
LOL!!!!

It's crazy how a 9.775 was a "devastating" score during this quad.

Hannah Aldrich of
Abandoned by her coach and her parents poor kim
The scoring system was ridiculous back then.
I remember feeling so sad for Kim.
I did too. It's heartbreaking seeing her do that and knowing that it cost her any kind of medal

its not standard anymore! thankfully

It was a random draw, like the starting order for event finals.
Just simply a drawing day before competition time.
Tatiana Gutsu had a much smoother swing compared to Shannon Miller.

Does anyone know why they came up with the new life rule?
Can someone please explain to me what the new life rule was? Also, why was it put into place?

1989 was the first year. This was part of why Boginskaya won over Silivas, I think.

why show their weight

no, it's ridiculous NOW
