My siblings both played soccer, baseball, and basketball and swimming. I personally liked not having my parents in the Gym and Dance studio room with me (I liked it was me and my coach). Also, the Dawes family lived a ways away from the Gym so Dominique eventually moved in with Kelly's family.
Dominique was awesome but I wish her training would have incorporated ballet to help her lines and toe point. Form deductions is what caused her to not have high scores.
Part of the problem with the toes is her muscular structure (no hate Domi, LOVE YOU!) Her legs are slightly bowed which pulls the feet muscles in different directions. I am a dance instructor and one of my students had that very problem. It can be corrected some with stretching and training the muscles to go in a different direction, but this can inhibit muscle strength and power in the legs. This is why we see extremely muscular gymnasts like Simone Biles not pointing their toes. The body can often go one of two ways: powerful or graceful. That is why power AND grace are such a rare beauty! Not that Dawes doesn't have grace, she does! It's just that her muscle/bone structure wouldn't let her have the same lines as others. :)
I think her score was a little low. There were two mistakes. One was on the landing of the front tuck and the other was on the split jump. She noticeably leaned back. Overall I think the form is what costs her. Bent knees, flexed feet, leg separation....when she has great form she qualified for EF at worlds. Amazing athlete.

After falling on her first vault she had to go again on a broken leg to win the gold for USA. she may not have landed all the way on 1 leg but as soon as she hit the ground she picked the broken leg up and basically collapsed after soluting.

Women's gymnastics is the 90s was much more impressive than it is today. It seems like on the beam they had to do more, and the passes on floor were crazy amazing!
What was the release move that Shannon did from low to high bar in the beginning of the routine? It almost looks like a bail except opposite going to low to high instead of high to low....
I don’t know. I, too thought Kelli Hill looked like an admirable coach, but after hearing Dawes reflecting back on her time with Hill, it doesn’t seem like Kelli was all that great behind closed doors. @@Janellabelle yep. She had flexed feet quite a bit throughout her career. She would be soft in her back on bars a lot too. She was good but personally, I never enjoyed watching her gymnastics as much as the ones that were much more artistic
Tim Daggett at 10:45 in the video was speaking about Kevin Brown and him coaching Amanda Borden (at that moment), and that he trained a great gymnast Brandy Johnson. Ummmm, he also coached 92 Olympic Bronze medalist Wendy Bruce which I think would be a more important stat Tim (Yes Brandy Johnson was a great gymnast, but she never won an Olympic medal like Wendy did).
+James R But Wendy won a bronze medal as part of the US team in Barcelona. Brandy Johnson was a National Champion and won a silver on VT at the 1989 Worlds, which was unheard of at that time when the Soviets and Romanians dominated everything. The US wouldn't win another medal on vault for 17 years. Not to mention that the US team (Brandy Johnson was a key member) were the winners of team bronze in Seoul, but lost it due to a technical rule enforced by Ellen Berger from East Germany. In 1988, Brandy Johnson actually had the 2nd best vault score in vaulting finals, but that was before the new life rule, so she finished 5th. Brandy also made the AA finals at the Olympics. Wendy Bruce, while an AA finalist at the 1989 Worlds, did not make any finals in Barcelona. If you are comparing the accolades of both Bruce and Johnson, Brandy comes out on top.
+mchur001 I agree with your comment; plus Tim & Brandy were contemporaries, fellow '88 Olympians. he was also a newbie as a commentator. fast forward 10 or 15 years, I'm sure he would've added something along the lines of,"...& Barcelona bronze medalist, Wendy Bruce. "
It's not really a matter of opinion. He pretty much factually showed why Brandy Johnson is more noteworthy than Wendy Bruce. I knew little about either, and don't care about one over the other, and after reading his comment I'm pretty convinced Brandy Johnson accomplished way more than Wendy Bruce. Just seems like a matter of facts to me, not opinion.
I believe it did exist, the Japanese filmed the 1994 winter Olympics in HD, you can find that here on UA-cam. The US just didn't film or broadcast in HD at that time.
They look young because sometimes, well... they are forced to not grow up..... properly. Well, you know what i mean. The same thing happened to olga korbut. If you see this vid called korbut bio, it tells you all about it, and trust me, it ain't pretty.
Why does it seem like the judges are generous with shannon? I'm not saying she isnt good but her tumbling was short on floor simple turns she was all over then she generously rewarded. Then the beam was shaky on all fronts yet big scores.
So true Shannon was damn good this night but Dominique was just as good if not better but since she was the world champ at the time they gave her big scores that whole night, they did that a lot for her through her career.
Im not gonna say that she wasnt deserving of some of the praise but her weakest event was always floor and her bars was usually basic but big scores as usual. Also as for ms dawes her difficulty was always up there and her gymnastics was exciting because she took risk which was nice but her weakness strange enough was vault but then again her degree of difficulty was always up there its the execution. Her floor and beam were the best for me personally.
As much as they should "not"..judges award for body lines, which of course are beyong the gymnasts control. Dominique, in my opinion, was a better gymnast (most of the time) yet she us slightly bo-legged which makes her look not quite as clean. Even in today's gymnastics its the same. Many do not like Biles (even though she indisputably the best in the world...if not ever) yet being very muscular many do not like her "line". Its unfair and most judges will never admit to it..
I agree wit what you said, but since 2000 i have not looked at gymnastics anymore but Biles caught my eyes last year and I had to come back to look at her vids she is really good but sadly you are right the lines and size. What people need to get is that these girls have more difficulty plus must do 4 passes now when on floor it is obvious they would be bigger than the previous girls.Sigh i really do miss the old days
Kerri's problem is that she gives up too easily and she was always injured. She could've fought to stay on the beam @13:25. I think the only reason she did a 2nd vault in 1996 was because she wanted to beat Moceanu and stop being in the shadows like she was with Miller and Zmeskal.
Yikes. After strugs routine, that forced hug from nunno cracks me up. Strugs face was like, "get away from me or else!" Or, "uh..... what.... what are you doing?"
Kim Thomas it’s like I never would have noticed the hop on landings or balance checks if he wasn’t constantly opening his mouth to hear himself talk! Thank goodness for his guidance! (Actually, he sometimes gives accurate information that isn’t all that obvious and I wish he would stick to that!)
That's proper sports commentary! In other countries we're always shocked by how bad US commentary is. We get into technical details in Australia and Europe and American commentators talk about athletes' personal lives. No wonder Americans never understand why they don't always win.
Seems to me the judges definitely showed some favoritism.. growing up Miller was definitely my favorite.. but, watching this today and seeming Dawes and Miller both on the beam and both doing a solid routine and the point difference was shocking 😮
It’s interesting to compare Steve Numno to Kelly Hill in terms of their coaching style. Steve got lucky with Shannon Miller, as she was already doing European style training and she was so determined to be perfect and to get it right. Meanwhile Kelly has had multiple elites who have had Olympic and world success, just as recently as Dicello 2021 world all around bronze medal.
That was the problem with Bela and Nunno "this is my time in the spotlight". It was about their egos not the gymnasts. You can see Shannon Miller deflating after beam routine...they just talk about the hop.....And those hideous scrunchies that Shannon and Kerri had to wear..
I LOVED scrunchies when I was a kid in the 90's and early 00's!!!! I do not see the scrunchies as hideous at all and probably was always wearing one to either gymnastics or dance when I was a kid/teenager!!!
That's bull shit. Dominic was perfection on the beam and she's given a 9.675 Shannon Miller makes 2mistakes and her score was 9.8something. Unless you were a fucking golden child back then u were screwed!!! It's suppose to be about the sport the technique of the sport but it never is it's all about racism & politics!! I haven't the slightest why anyone would want to dedicate there entire life to something they're clearly not going to have any fairness in unless they have blonde hair and blue eyes. At least some thing's have gotten better since ´93.
The way these commentators were allowed to (and most definitely took upon themselves to) talk about the gymnasts back then is DISGUSTING!! They were SO incredibly negative! Also; Their weight being displayed along with their names is gross too!!
Tim is so annoying who calls back handsprings "flip flops"?? all he does is focus on the negatives like where deductions are being taken and what they did wrong never gives good commentary whoever made him a commentator should be fired out of a cannon
Flip flop is indeed the common name for the skill (back hand spring step out, which takes longer to say). Flic flac is usually reserved for “normal” backhand springs to two feet
Very normal response to a back handspring back then. I was an elite gymnast back then before I broke my back and more coaches than not, used that term.

Matter of opinion. I totally disagree.
Agreed. Brandy was the star of USA gymnastics from 88-90-ish, winning the nationals, American Cup, et cetera. Wendy never won anything.
I think it's funny how they talk the same 😂😂😂
Who's having that awful crash the in warm up in the background at 3:01?
HD didn't exist when this was filmed. They can't show it in HD.
I believe it did exist, the Japanese filmed the 1994 winter Olympics in HD, you can find that here on UA-cam. The US just didn't film or broadcast in HD at that time.
How old were these girls? they look a lot younger than todays gymnasts.
Most of them were only 16. Since Nadia, who was only 14 at Montreal 1976, almost everything was allowed.
They look young because sometimes, well... they are forced to not grow up..... properly. Well, you know what i mean. The same thing happened to olga korbut. If you see this vid called korbut bio, it tells you all about it, and trust me, it ain't pretty.
14 or 15

Why did the beam break in that first clip geez
Dawes was robbed on beam.
Dominique was bow-legged at birth and had to wear a brace til her first birthday (which I found out from reading the Magnificent 7 Book).
That opening fluff piece on Amanda did not age well!!
Kerri's problem is that she gives up too easily and she was always injured. She could've fought to stay on the beam @13:25. I think the only reason she did a 2nd vault in 1996 was because she wanted to beat Moceanu and stop being in the shadows like she was with Miller and Zmeskal.
I think Kerri tried of being second best back in 1992 & 1993 & 1996... Kerri won the American championship all the round in 1996
Kerri never gave up! She kept on battling on chy chy, you dork!
@@lewis4ladyvols Shannon won US championship in 96. I think you're thinking of American Cup, which Kerri won in 96 (I'm pretty sure she won).
Yikes. After strugs routine, that forced hug from nunno cracks me up. Strugs face was like, "get away from me or else!" Or, "uh..... what.... what are you doing?"
Depois de qual aparelho?
Every time Kerri screwed up, she was injured after.
It’s so creepy how they made Kerri Strug look exactly like Shannon Miller who they made look exactly like Peggy. It’s disgusting.
Each club wore the same leotards and usually only had one person to help with their hair. Not so unusual back then.
I am so glad with have Dagget to point put all the mistakes
Kim Thomas it’s like I never would have noticed the hop on landings or balance checks if he wasn’t constantly opening his mouth to hear himself talk! Thank goodness for his guidance! (Actually, he sometimes gives accurate information that isn’t all that obvious and I wish he would stick to that!)
That's proper sports commentary! In other countries we're always shocked by how bad US commentary is. We get into technical details in Australia and Europe and American commentators talk about athletes' personal lives.
No wonder Americans never understand why they don't always win.
How did Shannon scored a 9.9 on bars? BS
Her form was impeccable. Straight line in handstands, legs together and toes pointed throughout the routine.
I love this...my dream was to go elite but my dad wouldn't let me
Mine too! I did but broke my back after 2 years. I still struggle with depression because of it.
21:46 The Miller!
USA Gymnastics: you wore nice leotards back then.
These hairstyles are awesome 😅
So many waterfall bangs, so little time.
Seems to me the judges definitely showed some favoritism.. growing up Miller was definitely my favorite.. but, watching this today and seeming Dawes and Miller both on the beam and both doing a solid routine and the point difference was shocking 😮
Dominique Dawes was robbed in this competition. 9.675 on beam?!? Where! 🥴
Kim Zmesko? Al....
I don't care what sport it is, winning hurts
It’s interesting to compare Steve Numno to Kelly Hill in terms of their coaching style. Steve got lucky with Shannon Miller, as she was already doing European style training and she was so determined to be perfect and to get it right. Meanwhile Kelly has had multiple elites who have had Olympic and world success, just as recently as Dicello 2021 world all around bronze medal.
9.6 FOR DAWES ON BEAN?
Yes, I agree that was a rip off too.
She was always scored unfairly!
That was the problem with Bela and Nunno "this is my time in the spotlight". It was about their egos not the gymnasts. You can see Shannon Miller deflating after beam routine...they just talk about the hop.....And those hideous scrunchies that Shannon and Kerri had to wear..
+Emmy Johnson What do the scrunchies have to do with anything? They're teenaged girls in the year 1993, those scrunchies were the epitome of cool.
I LOVED scrunchies when I was a kid in the 90's and early 00's!!!! I do not see the scrunchies as hideous at all and probably was always wearing one to either gymnastics or dance when I was a kid/teenager!!!
Emmy Johnson : I always thought of the scrunchie as a Miller trademark. It worked very well for her until she got older.
Oh come on, scrunchie apologists! They’re as big as their heads!
Emmy Johnson funny how this comment didn’t hold up! Scrunches are back! 😂
90s leos...poor kids. They were truly fugly.
Poor Bella. Not.
Why is Shannon making this sad face??
The way these commentators were allowed to (and most definitely took upon themselves to) talk about the gymnasts back then is DISGUSTING!! They were SO incredibly negative! Also; Their weight being displayed along with their names is gross too!!
Be mad about something done 30 years ago you silly unfrosted pop tart
Omg tim looks like a girl
Kerri strug acrobatic series form is just plain ugly LOL. But the mount on beam during this days is much more interesting compared to now.
She was forced to do from her coach steve nunno, and she couldn't choose whether to do them.
tim ..hehe
Show in HD atleast
Rosa Days lmao😂
😂😂
Tim Daggett 🤮
Are you sure about dominqes the true colour and gender 🤔 because something wrong with my TV
Little did they know wat Dominique Dawes was going to become..what a shame her mother wasn't supportive
... They had no idea what they all were going to become.
To me,she was still, supportive. Its a different Dynamic in gymnastics or in Dance vs. Any other sport basically IMO.
kerri strug has ugly form (her tumbling run on beam)
I think she has one of the best forms! Especially her tumbling
Umm this is so old !
Well, time is linear. So.....yeah. something from a long time ago is old.
Dominique is ovs the best there but she has a HORRIBLE leotard!
Greensmoke 2 :Matter of opinion, I like her leotard.
The 90s get ova it
Tim is so annoying who calls back handsprings "flip flops"?? all he does is focus on the negatives like where deductions are being taken and what they did wrong never gives good commentary whoever made him a commentator should be fired out of a cannon
Flic-flac is another name for it
Flip flop is indeed the common name for the skill (back hand spring step out, which takes longer to say). Flic flac is usually reserved for “normal” backhand springs to two feet
I feel somewhere you do about Tim today... He drives me crazy & I don't want to listen to Tim..
Very normal response to a back handspring back then. I was an elite gymnast back then before I broke my back and more coaches than not, used that term.
