House of the Dragon S2 | Episode 8 FINALE Recap & Review

- It was Episode 8 of House of the Dragon and it was another exhausting one where we see the the beginning of an Aemond Targaryen reign as King, Larys the Clubfoot deciding the future of Aegon II, Rhaenyra finally having her army of dragons assembled, and what the hell is up with Daemon seeing Rhaenyra...Prince who was promised CONFIRMED FINALLY?
Also some other plot lines that needed attention in this Finale for House of the Dragon...let's recap and review it together for this Game of Thrones spinoff!
I loved the scene between Aemond and Helaena. Aemond always stares menacingly at everyone and doesn’t even blink. To see him unable to hold her gaze without blinking and with tears in his eyes was so telling. And he seemed so hurt when she said he’s going to die at the God’s Eye, because you could tell he knew she’d seen it and was telling the truth. Brilliant acting by both of them.
I liked it, too. The problem for me is that when Helaena mentions how she saw the Aegon/Aemond moment...I'm like come on what the f*** why do we have to make everything spooky?
The war itself is a good enough story!
I loved that moment too. From the point of her whispering to Daemon to her conversation with Aemond.

Dang, we should’ve gotten 10 episodes like they intended in the beginning, I’m sure. It seems like the story is missing something huge this season. Gullet should have been right after the sowing and with that comes a great victory for the greens. I hope this doesn’t trickle down into season 3. I’m still happy we got what we got. The showrunner admitted that he did 8 episodes because something big was to happen that felt more like a season 3 thing, probably so that they can do it justice. If it's the death of Jacaerys, I think it was better not to have it right at the end like they had it with Lucerys, as it would just feel like a repeat of season 1.
10 episodes would've been much better...I have no idea why they feel the need to shorten them. It's bugging me.
I hate that I end this season upset.

I agree, I am not sure what they are doing with her character here!
I was happy with them showing Larys and Aegon running away because it was obvious by that point, but I did NOT like the Aemond God's Eye thing.
When Aemond took over from Aegon, he told Larys to go find Otto to become the hand. They never mentioned Otto was in jail or explained why. But also wasn't it Alicent who went to get him in the last episode?
Well that's true, but I think Otto was already out of communication by that point. I would not think Larys or Alicent took Otto, but I dunno we'll see I guess.

I didn't fully understand it, hah. That's one of my main issues. The "is Helaena...Alys? Is Alys...Helaena?" and then retconning Dany as the Prince(ss) who was Promised?...then these white walkers...bah.
Helena enjoying riding her dragon for travelling somewhere or just for fun is one thing, but the point was she didn't want to go into battle and kill people, which is why Aemond was being kindof aggressive and forcing her to fight in the war.
Totally - I get that. I think where my discrepancy is where Rhaenyra said Helaena doesn't have a taste for riding her dragon. Maybe hair splitting, but that's what a main character said so ::shrug::
I think your first instinct about who imprisoned Otto might be right. Larys might have stowed him away but now that he's fleeing to Essos (or somewhere) he might have no more need to keep him imprisoned. I think the real mystery is how much of a mystery it is.
I think it could be, for sure. I mean Larys is wise enough to understand that Otto is wise enough to help install Aegon II after some refreshing...but of course, that's a major risk since Aegon II and Otto didn't exactly leave on good terms! Hah.
In the scene with Rhaenera and Helaena, I thought Helaena would bend the knee to Rhenaera. They said Aegon had to be killed, but that still leaves Aemond as a huge problem once Rhaenera comes to King's Landing. Also Aegon would not even be there. They said a son for a son, which kindof implied killing Aegon because he killed Luke. Rhaenera needs to kill both in order to remove anyone opposing her claim to the throne.
I think essentially, Alicent did bend the knee. She just has no functional purpose to Rhaenyra's camp so I guess it doesn't mean much if she sided with Rhaenyra publicly.
Well, since that little thing between his legs is gone, by all accounts Aegon should have lost the right to be king by his own standards, since that was the one and only reason he was placed upon the Iron Throne in place of Rhaenyra. Which makes all those who still support him nothing more than hypocrites.
Hah - hypothetically, yeah. I mean that is a fair point honestly. I guess the only difference is Aegon does have an heir (even tho it's a girl) so he did his duty with his peen already.

It was underwhelming, yes, but what really set me off was the character assassination. I've never seen so many character arcs butchered in a single episode. Damn, I really gaslighted myself into thinking that all those dragged out daemon scenes would somehow pay off. But no. This 'prophecy' gives mostly every character no real agency in the story. Rhaenyra, Alicent, Halaena, Alys, and now Daemon too?! Seriously? Rhaenyras entire purpose is that she is this savior due to this prophecy. Alicent has no agency. She believed Aegon should be King because of this prophecy only to betray her family wtf total character assassination, what happened to "in this world we must protect our own". Alys has no agency. Her main purpose is to push this prophecy onto Daemon so he can see that Rhaenyra is the 'true' Queen. It's just flat out boring. Helaena's supposedly tragic character devolved into a GOT bran 2.0, from "I'm scared of rats" to straight up spoiler "you'll die here at this place and at this time". How many prophets do we need in this show?! Horrible writing this season.
Daemon's visions were to give him growth and to make him believe in what he's been scoffing the entire time. He now understands why Rhaenyra was holding back and why she was trying to keep from killing everyone.
There are a bunch of characters I wouldn't say were assassinated, but I can say I'm disappointed by. For sure.
The characters I wanted a lot of, weren't given anything (Otto, Aegon II, Daemon, Rhaenys) to work with for most of the season or they died.
A bunch of characters I only sort of know were given a lot of time (Addam, Alyn, Ulf, Hugh, Rhaena)
I agree with Raina taking over the story of Nettles. But in the books, nettles flies away with sheepstealer, and Rena has the pink dragon (Morning). So I am wondering, how does that dynamic work out now?
They kinda fucked themselves cause now season 3 can’t have any build up, it just has to go straight to war. And then what!? It trickles off and fades away?? Weird flex
I mean you’re not wrong… the pacing with this Season has been off. And now we have to go straight to war. Not sure if this is what they wanted to do…
I think they can start a season with war and it go well...but it isn't how I would've done it.
thats why we only got 8 eps this season. The war will consume more than 2 eps and they didn't have time in s2

I don’t disagree with expecting a more climatic finale but I am happy they didn’t force something. I do think we got a lot of decent context with Halena which I have been wanting more of. I am personally under the belief they are tying some loose ends with the OG show to give them a way to correct it. The show could introduce what happened after the Night King was “killed”; we never got a resolution to what happened to the babies they took. We have assumptions and beliefs but a lot more uncertainty.
I hate them using this show to fix the main GOT show. Not at all into that. HOTD has a chance to be so much better than the latter episodes that ruined the GOT brand.

The poor black common girl was murdered by the fantasy princess with a special bloodline who got everything they wanted.
I mean Rhaena being black I think helps soften that blow for sure.

Do you really think Sunfire is dead or is that just Aegon assuming so? With what happened in the books I can't imagine they really killed off Sunfire. I believe they are still alive and will reappear when we least expect it.
I think Aegon just assumes the dragon is dead, but he's our only narrator on the subject at this point so ::shrug::

But I will also say: I think only show watchers do NOT remember what Joffrey told Margaery. That was a very obscure scene that most people probably don't remember, so that's why I wouldn't announce it as if it's common knowledge (just personal preference)

I liked the finale but I agree I thought it was mostly set up. I don’t know if I like how they’re explaining the seers in the show both are just straight up spoiling the books and the show though I do like how Daemons vision sequence is similar to the books.
Overall I would give the season a 7.5 where as season 1 had a 9. The pacing was off and I feel like characters like Alicent and Daemon are a step down from last season. But I like how they set up the dragon seeds. Portrayed the small folk well and Rhaenerys actress did a great job.
Yeah I mean, I just don't fully understand what they're going for with the visions and that...the greenseers is the one I don't understand the most. I don't get what's happening with Helaena and Alys. I don't understand the mechanics of it all.
The season a 7.5 is a good score I think and they took some of the best characters and neutered them. I hated that.
ALSO they made me fall in love with Aegon II and he was injured (as he was supposed to - but whatever I don't care I just want more Aegon II)

I have to agree here! They gave us One. Long. Regular. Ass. Episode! It was just so mid. Like I understand what they are setting us up for but Geez, what’s up Geeta! (Director). Respectfully. One cool take away was Sharako Lohar & Tyland Lannister! It was very entertaining knowing how Tyland is. And it’s a shame…. And Aegon I am just loving his arc, and to see him dissolve into this shell of who he used to be is attention grabbing and very worthy of the attention. Not sure what they are going to do with Halena …tho……? Daemon , this took way too long to arrive at him touching the werewood tree! This could have occurred like 2 episodes ago!

This was supposed to be episode 8 of 10! AFTER the season was fully written, HBO dropped a bomb on the showrunners: you can only film 8 episodes! This was during the writers strike and most of the writers are US-based so they couldn’t do scrambled rewrites, which would’ve been a potential disaster anyway…not to mention it would’ve delayed filming further.

If this show continues to go down the white walker path, they are f***ing up massively. All I ever wanted was to see was that Aegon the COnqueror knew of the Night King coming one day and that's why he united the realm. I want zero other showing of white walkers from here on out.
She's not doing anything to put any of her sons in danger which is why she didn't take Jace.
And I get that - but she's doing it while knowing Jacaerys resents her for it. So I personally understand it, but the character of Jacaerys probably doesn't like it very much no matter her intenion.
Imagine if Cersei went on Dragon Stone to tell Stannis, Geoffrey would bent the knee

I thought it was an okay episode. It was unconventional for a season finale but it had great parts. We final got the payoff with Daemons visions, he no longer has self ambition and is now that he needs to be committed to Rhaenrya. I do not think Sunfyre is dead, and Kevin, you and I both know he is needed for something big down the road. I like Jace, but he needs to get a grip and stop acting like a whiny child. I love the dynamics between Ulf and Hugh. I know Ulf was being a bit obnoxious in this episode, but to me his funny and a lovable character. I love Hugh, he down to earth about his new mission and he all duty. I think the reason why Rheanrya chose Addam to go to Harrenal instead of Jace was the same reason why there must always be a Stark in Winterfell. I personally cannot wait to see the look on Alicents face when returns to King's Landing to find that Aegon has left. Overall the Season was okay. I agree with giving it a 7 out of 10.
That's the thing - like I don't want to hate on it too much, I guess I just loved the ending of S1 so much that it bums me out S2 didn't compare IMO.
There's a lot of potential ahead...just let's chill out on the spooky stuff for a bit eh. No white walkers are coming any time soon so let's relax.

I actually appreciated HOTD so much more after reading the book, so thought I’d “do my homework” before the Next show comes around this time.
the finale was bittersweet for me. to get this out of the way, it seems like Ryan Condol confirmed nettles’ cut from the show…and I’m sad about it. Still, I’m open to seeing what they do with Rhaena’s new character development and not passing any judgement before I see what they do. Still, it’s strange that they didn’t show her and sheepstealer interact. Why would they leave that open ? This season so far had more good “moments” than episodes. Last season was established as a “set up” season so why would this season be one? Tbh, this season needed more political intrigue and should’ve ended with the dragon seeds. Also, if the rumors are true, they’re going to continue seasons with eight episodes and it’s gonna have four seasons total. I’m getting kind of nervous for the show.
also…I think people are being too harsh on ulf. yeah it’s true that him, addam, and Hugh are small folk, but they still have different backgrounds. Addam and his brother were raised as shipwrights and learned how to properly communicate with people. They also served under a high lord (their father). Hugh is the son of a Targaryen princess. Ulf has spent his entire life in flea bottom not knowing the ways of court. Is he going a bit overboard? Yes but he’s just being himself and enjoying his come up.
I understand your feeling about being nervous for the show. I'm a little nervous for it, too - but I have some faith that with the events of next season, they can nail it. I highly encourage people to continue to make opinions known about how 8 episodes didn't help, it was underwhelming, some of the writing wasn't proper...in hopes that the producers LISTEN.
I think the reason Aemond hasn't gone for the Velaryon fleet is because they have scorpion bolts or whatever they're called. He might be able to destroy a good portion of the fleet but he's risking losing Vhagar in the process.
Edit: Also I'm getting a little concerned that the greens are becoming too weak, and that the payoff for when they fight isn't going to be good.
I just have such a hard time believe scorpions would hurt a dragon as big as Vhagar, but I dunno maybe I'm just giving her way too much credit.
@@TheBattProductions i mean per lore, one of Aegon the Conqueror's wives died when her dragon got shot down i think. I'm also definitely trying to cope dumb decisions by the Greens lol. I hope this fight becomes a little closer next season because right now it seems like an easy Black win with any sort of large victory at a battle. Also love the content🙏
First, love the wig! For me, the word is conflicted. Maybe even confused. I would give the season 7/10 also.
Ditto on the 2 characters with dialogue, but boy, did we need a battle last night. The structure of the entire season felt off, and I really think a lot of that was the cut down to 8 episodes, and possibly the writer’s strike. I think they had the Gullet planned for the Finale. Given that scenario, HBO seriously has a lot to answer for.
Sarah Hess can write some great dialogue but I think she and Ryan have taken the patriarchy narrative to the point of obsession. Rhaenyra and Alicent have had their moments, but it feels like these women have been victims for 2 whole seasons. That’s too long. What I wouldn’t give for a Cersei right now. Even Mysaria is a goody two shoes.
That last scene 🤦🏻♀️. Waaayyy to late in the game for this. That’s why I couldn’t enjoy it. And what the heck are they doing with Alicent? She’s giving Rhaenyra permission to kill Aegon? Like what? On one hand I love it when 2 people from opposing sides get together. On the other hand, it’s like “Can we get on with this war already? I could be dead in two years.” I’m going to do a different comment on my impression of the whole episode in more context. I do have some positive things to say. But now, I have to start my day

We needed a battle of some sort and need something much cooler...there were cliffhangers that I don't really understand, like Rhaena with Sheepstealer. Just give her the dragon bro. We know it's coming.
Sarah Hess can write awesome dialogue but like...do it more ya know. Alicent can have Cersei like monologues, but she lacked that this season. We've seen it from Larys and Otto, which were wonderful, but those characters have been cast aside ya know.
What they're doing with Alicent is driving me nuts and so many other things that are bumming me out, hah. I mean there's still a ton of awesome things to say about the season
Until They were ready to take Kings Landing he had to remain in the haunted castle. The story line had to develop. Because he doesn't leave the castle until they go for king's landing.
I understand this has to happen, but Daemon didn't need to spend the whole season there. Maybe like 5 episodes, not all 8 ya know?!

@@TheBattProductions let’s rank it. I think we can all agree that HOTD Season 1 was better than Season 2. I also think we can say that GOT Seasons 1-5 were better than HOTD Season 2. I think we can also say that GOT Season 8 was the worst season out of any series. So that leaves GOT Seasons 6 and 7. I put season 6 above HOTD season 2. That leaves 7. There are arguments for season 7 to be above season 2, and I could see that, but I lump season 7 with season 8 and I just can’t put it above HOTD season 2. Although, season 7 has one of my favorite scenes where Jaime finally leaves Cersei. So that puts HOTD Season 2 the third worst season, in my opinion of course. Do you agree with my opinion?

Blacks have the North, the Riverlands, and possibly the Vale with the Velaryon fleet (best in Westeros). Greens have...not a ton after Meleys burned them.

Yeah, not a great way to end a season. A lot of interesting stuff happened, but they just left us hanging on far too much. It's like they were trying to write a cliff-hanger for every storyline. Did producers forget to tell the writers that there weren't two more episodes? I guess we'll find out more in 3 years or so. And was that throat-singing at the end?
Sticking the landing is so important and they just didn't do it this time. It's interesting but not enough ya know?

Nah - she's telling a dude who is slated TO BE KING to gain some perspective and realize that he has as much birthright as any other of the new dragonriders + formal decree of succession + a dragon. @@carastone3473 It's not really *wrong* per se. I mean there's no one who pronounces characters names "wrong" more than George himself. Stannis, Catelyn, Rhaenys, Dothraki, etc. are all victims to him saying them different ways.
I just don't take character pronounciations that seriously, especially when sometimes they have a hard C (Jacaerys) and a light C (Jace)
And the Jace/Baela stuff...she's right, he needs to suck it up. The world isn't going to do him any favors spilling his weak insecurities all over the place like that. Dude is destined to fail with mentality like that. Baela is setting him straight the best she can. It's war.

So I've been holding off on my comments all day. Didn't need that energy for a Monday. Honestly why give us a season? They couldve divided a season in 2 parts and taken more time to develop it instead of this slow motion stuff. Alot of the stuff happening in the last ep shouldve happened 2 eps ago. The pacing was just wonky. Could've given us battle of gullet atleast, but I liked tylands arc, it was funny, so it had some redeeming moments. Some of the dialogues were fast paced and rhanearya really needs to move instead of giving the same speech a 1000 times abt peace and caution. Who's writing this stuff? Daemons arc was ok the weirdwood scene was cool and the hype was great to see but honestly after how s8 ends it seems pointless to even tie it to the main show. Like we know how it ends just don't need a reminder of that. I thought they'd atleast leave KL for last but seems like theyll squish everything in s3 and 4 which is a disservice given how slow things were this season. That last convo between R and Alicent was a good tie in to their previous conversation but it just looks like the writers want to paint blacks as good and greens as bad in a very childish one dimensional way. Martins story and characters are ironic and complicated and it looks like they underestimate the audiences intelligence. Although i still like the last music score sequence, im curious where alicient will go next but seems weird for her to abandon her kids especially halaena and be like please take KL its all yours instead of giving R the chance to come to that conclusion on her own and show that venegeful vicious side they've written her as. Not sure I'm into the good queen Rhanearya rhetoric. Its too childish and frankly insulting for ppl who appreciate the lore. Overall the ep was fine it just didnt seem like a finale more like 2 more eps are due.
Bahahah okay now this was what I'd call unloading on creators...they definitely took issues that didn't need to be issues and highlight them. I think they screwed up for sure and they have so much to work on...
I liked the Alicent/Rhaenyra thing sort of, but at the same time...totally changes the Alicent character story from the book (and they acknowledge that)
@@TheBattProductions I think they're going in a different direction with her considering she and halaena end the same way. Although I think they're hesitating killing off characters unlike the earlier seasons of GOT. I don't understand the hesitation, the writing is too fluffy I get plot and character development I just don't think they have enough balance with action.
I disagree with you, for me the sneak ins and out are getting dumber by the minute and Alicent kinda forgot about her GS? really BAD scene...and diminishes the impact of their later interactions. And that "Come with me?" line... really?🤦♀The best parts of the last episode for me were Corlys and Alayn & Cole and Gwayne scenes...one of the best speeches in the series. Like GOT early seasons.

Yeah I mean I think the Alicent/Rhaenyra scenes weren't great this episode. I'm not really a fan of them. I'd rather Alicent be a bit more book-related thatn what we've been getting on the show.
Gwayne had a great scene with Colo (no doubt) and the Corlys/Alyn stuff...I'm hoping that becomes a little more important to me. I just don't care enough about them yet, but he's a newer character so it makes sense.

In the books it just says Daemon was away raising an army…. Not spending 7 episodes in The Haunting of Hill Hiuse ffs. Such wasted opportunity.
I like Tylan Lannister, but 3 separate scenes? Why? They’re of 0 consequence overall in the Dance.
If you’re going to cut out nettles (insane, she’s a massive character!) then atleast give us Sheeostealer ffs!

All they had to do was have Rhaenyra go to kings landing and sit the throne like the season 7 finale with Danny.
Then atleast something of consequence happened here.
Rhaenys is literally the only major thing that happened. As we know Sunfyre is not dead.
Could have ended your video after the 30 second mark. That's the general feeling I've seen online about the finale.

@@george3053 The thing with Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon is that there's the way the show pronounces the name, and there's the way the books/George does. Sometimes they're different. So sometimes I say them differently at times. C's can sound like S's. So Jacaerys sounding like Jasarys isn't an insane proposition or anything ya know

This whole season was soooooo bad and if that deformed thing at the end is Sheepstealer, I'm gonna just rage for days. Its also so tiny in this scene. Just ugh. I really hope they change their mind and say this is just another random dragon. Jacaerys acting like he hates the common dragon riders is so ridiculous when we know he's the biggest supporter of the dragon seeds. Daemon's whole vision quest was a giant waste of time. Rhaena's whole story arch taking over Nettles is a disappointment regarding both characters. I dunno man. This show is just... awful. 2/10 only because of all the dragons and I feel that is generous.
I don't think the whole season was really bad or anything, but they did NOT stick the landing at all. I don't know why they'd let this Sheepstealer/Rhaena thing go on so much...just give her the dragon and let it happen.
JAcaerys is being ridiculous but I actually dig it. He's a conflicted character ya know and I love that. He's imperfect and complicated and compelling to me.
Daemon's vision quest accomplished something, but it was done in such an odd way.

I agree with Raina taking over the story of Nettles. But in the books, nettles flies away with sheepstealer, and Rena has the pink dragon (Morning). So I am wondering, how does that dynamic work out now?
It's a good question. There's a chance Morning is just erased entirely and Rhaena does leave anyway.
We will see what HBO cooks up!
