Just watched episode 1. The best 1st episode to a TV show that I've watched in years. Absolutely fantastic! Going to re-watch it immediately after posting this comment. It's a show that _MUST_ be watched. An instant classic! I didn't call it the 'pilot' episode because John Blackthorne was a pilot - technically meaning all 10 episodes are 'pilot' episodes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Adams_(pilot)
I'm old enough to remember the 1980s version with Richard Chamblain & loved it, at the time. I rewatched some of it this week... Parts of it were laughable 😂
@@debchelsea Yeah. The 1980 version hasn't aged well. It's supposed to be Japan, 1600, but feels very Starsky & Hutch. TV was miles below the movies, up to HBO kickstarting the Golden age of TV, late 90's. Movie stars rarely deigned to appear in TV drama, unless they were on the downward slope and/or desperate. Alec Guinness starring in Tinker, Tailor, 1979, was one of the few exceptions, that I can think of.
There's 4 parts to this, total running time of about 5 hours 15 minutes. Audible offers Shogun in 2 parts, total running time of 53 hours 34 minutes. I think this was an abridged version, truncated to fit on a few cassette tapes, probably in the 80's when talking books became popular, mainly for car stereos. All hail the narrator, David Case, 1932 - 2005. NOT Rupert Farley and _certainly not_ Charles Hawtrey - a suggestion surely made under the influence of very powerful drugs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Frederick_Case
Very well read by the same reader of the Sharpe series. Not sure if this will be an abridged version, but the novel is actually quite long. Shogun is a fascinating action/ romance depiction of 1600s Japan through the narration of European ignorance and egocentrism.
I find the term 'arrogant' to be an issue - as if to condemn. The main issue was culture shock. Notice that the Japanese viewed anyone other than themselves as "barbarian". That's how cultures tended to be towards those who weren't very close to themselves - and even ones which were, sometimes.
@@banedon8087this is correct , the book is meant to show the Japanese and Europeans as ignorant and arrogant . The developing relationship between mariko and anjin is meant to show how with a little effort people from completely worlds can come together as one and understand each other.
Love the audiobook and narration, other than some tetchy japanese pronounciation like 'wakarimasu ka?' You dont pronounce the su like 'masu' its just pronounced like 'wakarimass ka', the 'u' is silent
Fuck it, I'm not waiting weeks for the show! Here for the story!

Same 😂😂
The 1980 series is better. Slower, yes. But more true to the original. However. I do enjoy watching the new version for the cultural input.

A new miniseries is going to be on HULU in America and FX on cable Feb 2024.
Yes I can’t wait😊
It's only 10 episodes and isn't returning 😭
Excellent. Thank you.
About the narrator . I heard recently : " The brothers Caramazov" and i think is the same voice. The name of him is Frederick Davidson...
Fantastic narration. Thank you for posting.

That is an apt description, but I find the arrogant Eurocentrism adds to the time period and makes the main character feel more realistic.

Hi John, do you know the name of the narrator? Or the edition? I’d like to find this audiobook for myself. Thanks!
@@lednimedved8 It's read by David Case

Thanks
is Charles Hawtrey reading this
The Carry On films actor who made Kenneth Williams look [and sound] masculine?
The narrator sounds nothing like Hawtrey.
💎
Who is this wonderful narrator please?
It’s AI
@@Zatherothx its not😅😅
Did you go to Lawrence Sheriff School@@rhyswilliams4893
Same voice on a couple of the Sharpe books , not a fan
: )
is this AI?
The gay-tinged Upper-U narration is a bit odd, doncha think?
It's a [faux] West Country dialect, historically associated with seafarers since Drake, Hawkins and Raleigh were all from Devon.
Why do all these audiobooks have the same nasally old English voices. It's really not tolerable
It's better than a yankie twang, I heard an American reading Jane Austen, it was horrendous!
