Wow, what a great idea for a show like this, giving a little backdrop and openly separating the facts from the fiction. I wish more historical media would care enough to do this.
The names of the players in Clavell's novel, the original miniseries and this series, have been altered from those of their real historical counterparts. Production values and cast are A+ and I can't wait to see this... Fun fact-- "Shogun" makes for a trifecta of shows (Apple TV's "Pachinko" and "Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters" are the other two), featuring Anna Sawai and all three, were made (in part) in and around Vancouver.
Funny thing is... its generally accurate. This is basically at the end of the Sengoku period. Oda Nobunaga was dead, and his successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi (the Taiko in the video) was also dead, leaving the Toyotomi clan in the hands of a 7 years old. A council regent is set up to rule Japan instead. One of the regent is a daimyo called Tokugawa Ieyasu (in this video Toranaga). They use almost the same name and pretty much the same clan flag.
Clavell changing the names of the historical figures works in its favor. Wikipedia-readers pretending to be historical experts will have a hard time complaining about "historical accuracy" of fictional characters.
@@KK-fi6ms Yeah, it does make the history buff in me a tiny bit sad that they didn’t at least keep the names of the more well-known daimyo, but I do understand the rationale.

Most people aren't familiar with the diacritical marks that are added onto letters to indicate changes in pronunciation, stress, tone, or other aspects of speech. So they just pronounce the word exactly how it's written. The pronunciation of Shōgun in English borrows from the Japanese "将軍". The diacritic over the "o" (the macron, ō) is supposed to indicate a long vowel sound.
Very nice reconstruction! I love Clavell’s works and I recommend everyone to read the others in timeline order rather than the date of publication: Shogun > Gai-Jin > Tai-Pan > King Rat > Noble House > Whirlwind

As an aside, Japan was isolated in the Tokugawa era and Christianity was banned, but there were still people who believed in it. One of the areas was Nagasaki, and the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki was directly above the medical school and the Catholic Church.
This is so thoughtfully put together. Loving the show so far.
Please, please let there be a season two
Production looks amazing. One of the best books of all time. Really looking forward to this.
This artfully crafted and beautifully rendered historical primer gives me a lot of hope for the quality of the show. If FX puts this much work into creating such a visually stunning presentation, just to educate people as to the historical context of the show, then it is a clear indicator that the show is probably going to be top notch in terms of its production value.
This is one of the shows I can remember vividly from the 80' I'm actually surprised it's took this long to have a remake.
i'm really excited for this serie as a Samurai's passionate
love fx from Tunisia
I have been an admirer and collector of all James Clavell and my prized possession left in my collection is the best "Shogun" which was written in the year I was born ...too bad my other novels was lost in my travels and moving residences thru the years...
Wonderful work, I am so excited for this show!
Just watched the 5th episode and can confirm this show is actually good
It´s amazing. The Story and the Pictures . I hope they will show Shogun in other Streaming Services or on Blueray. The Quality is superb.
Just finsh the first 2 episodes, so I'm so excited to see Yoshii Toranaga and John Black Thorne team up.
Wow! Thats was beautifully made edit & visual introductoin to the show! Been looking foward to this ever since i watched the 1st trailer, I watched the 1st 2 episodes last night! Amazing!
Read the book by James Clavell years ago. Still one of my top 3 novels ever!
I’ve watched 2 episodes already and l absolutely cannot wait for the coming ones
Holy COW. That was great! I’m glad they made this background video, that’s so cool. This will be a killer series!!
Great intro, cool graphic design which is just on point, great job to whoever did it
I like how she always emphasise the "gun" in Shōgun, as if telling non-Japanese that it is not SHOWGAAAAAAN.
I love the original series, watched it many times over. This modern take looks fantastic. Can't wait!
Great video! Loved this first 2 episodes but this helped me out a lot!
This was incredibly well done and deserves a ton of praise
Brilliant show! The narrative, chars, & setting are all portrayed magnificently
This was so beautifully done. Thank you for making this
Hope this show end on a single season, being brief and beautiful as mariko sama's poems.
This is a masterpiece.
This is great! I watched episode 1 today and have to keep stopping to look up different words for context 😆
When you do a Historical Show. THIS IS HOW YOU PROVIDE CONTEXT !
Legend Shogun, Great Cast, Great Clavell, Bushido.
Another Fun Fact the head gear worn by the samurai in the intro with multiple golden spikes was the real life headgear of toyotomi Hideyoshi
wow.. i wish i had watch this before seeing the series, explained a lot.
The show I’ve always dreamed of. It looks so stunning. Cannot be more hyped for this
Wow...see creativity 🎉🎉...im glued to tora nd john now..since mariko has died in ep 9😢
カッコ良すぎてもうね。
Great series so far!
Very nice reconstruction! I love Clavell’s works and I recommend everyone to read the others in timeline order rather than the date of publication: Shogun > Gai-Jin > Tai-Pan > King Rat > Noble House > Whirlwind
First 2 episodes are amazing 👏
2:49 That’s an awesome shot of the Taikō (Toyotomi Hideyoshi) and his army.
This was a great context for viewers! Love this book and Musashi.
This is absolutely brilliant . I used to watch a very well made Japanese Series called Shogun back in the 90’s. This Captivating FX series reminds me of it.
Shogun is the best show in years.
this is rly beautifully crafted like the TV show, imo masterpiece. Cant wait for more, to see more of this piece of art. Ost, the world, the visual fx, the dialog, the story and actors everything is 10/10. Thank you all so much for making this.😊🤗❤❤❤❤
